RE: [nysbirds-l] 3,000 Gulls on the Hudson in Newburgh
Guess I will add my two cents... Each day since Sunday, there has been at least one Iceland gull. All birds have been first year birds, with the exceptions being on Sunday, when a "darker" adult was seen with Tom and Gail and later a second bird, this time a "lighter" adult seen by myself and my father(Ken). These are the first and second adult birds that we are aware of being seen in Orange County in at least the past 40 years. Annually, we get first year birds, but adults have evaded us. Gull numbers this week have ranged from 1,000 - 5,000 birds. In years past, we have had numbers climb to approx. 10,000 birds (Hi Corey), so I am still anticipating a boom. Today, the Hudson at Newburgh was totally lacking Eagles. From all reports, they may have headed a little further south. Hope to see some of you in Orange and Dutchess this weekend. The more eyes the better. There may be something great out there. Today the rewards were an estimated 3,000 assorted gulls of the Greater Black-backed, Herring and Ring-billed variety and a single immature ICELAND GULL of that warm cafe-au-lait color that I love so much. Great things have been found here before and so we keep looking.
