RE: [nysbirds-l] more Caspian terns

Having heard of the Tern sightings at Kingston Point, I stopped in on my way 
south last night.  I arrived at approx. 6:15PM and was able to immediately see 
11 of the reported 13 Caspian Terns.  Additionally, I had  10 Common Terns, of 
which 8 were mid river flying northward in a loose group and 2 Bonapartes 
Gulls.  It was a nice end to the day.  I believe that the Caspians and possibly 
1 or 2 Commons spent the night.

There was a great showing of Caspian Terns along the Hudson River upstate. 
There were 13 at Kingston Point (Ulster County), 1 at New Baltimore (Greene 
Co.); 2 at Coeymans Landing (Albany County); 1 at Cohoes Flats (Albany/Saratoga 
Co.) and 1 at Collins Lake (Saratoga County).
Also, two Black Terns were at Coeymans Landing, and 1 at Crescent ( Mohawk 
River - Albany Co.).
And keeping with the tern theme: 12 Common Terns at Cohoes Flats as well. 
Let's see if this lingers into tomorrow or if these migrants move on (with an 
interesting ternover to follow).

wet area behind croton Harmon train station. Seem to be a (sometimes) annual

Doing a quick records search, shows this may be one of the best days, in 
decades for Common Tern in the Albany area.  While both Caspian and Black Terns 
are seen, at least a few each migration, Common Tern can go years without a 
single sighting, so the report of 12 at Cohoes Flats (on the Albany/Saratoga 
line) is truly remarkable.
I also saw an alert from the Hoffman Bird Club in Western Massachusetts who had 
similar experiences, including Forster's Tern.
These numbers are not remarkable for other parts of the state, but in this 
relatively land locked region, these are big numbers of Terns!
