[nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull - Tupper Lake, NY

2017-01-26 Thread Willie D'Anna
A first basic ROSS'S GULL has been found and photographed in Tupper Lake,
NY. Birders have been viewing and photographing it today, Jan 26. I have
seen the photos and certainly agree that it is a Ross's Gull!!! Thanks to
Joan Collins for texting me some photos. The bird was discovered when it was
found feeding on discarded fish eggs left on the ice of Lake Simond Pond by
the construction workers on the property. It has been observed repeatedly
returning to the eggs to feed, then disappearing for periods of time.

I believe the bird was originally photographed by the homeowner, Jack
Delehanty, son of well-known birders, Charlcie and Jack. The address is 363
Lake Simond Pond Road in the Town of Tupper Lake. This is 1.8 miles from NY
Rt 30. This is the first house on the left that is after the second road on
the left. PLEASE NOTE: NO MORE THAN 12 BIRDERS AT A TIME ARE PERMITTED ON
THE PROPERTY SO, IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE BIRD, PLEASE MOVE ON AND GIVE OTHERS A
CHANCE. Note that it may be a bit of a walk down the driveway to see the
pond. The pond can also be seen from adjacent state land just beyond the
house. Because this bird is attracted to fish eggs and there is no open
water in the area, it will likely leave once its food source runs out. So,
consider bringing fish eggs or another possible food source. I know that
Ivory Gulls will eat meat but I have my doubts that will work for this bird.
Still, it might be worth a shot.

Good birding!

RE:[nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull - Tupper Lake, NY

2017-01-26 Thread Willie D'Anna
Just a brief addendum to my earlier post. I wanted to give a shout-out to
Larry Master and Alan Belford for recognizing the bird in the original photo
as a Ross's Gull and for getting the word out. Also, I don't have all the
particulars but I ask that birders please be respectful of the private
property. There may be concerns with construction going on there or there
could be any number of reasons why the homeowner wants the crowds to be
minimized. I realize that the bird may not stay long enough for this to
become a problem but, if it does, please try to keep your visit short and
the numbers down.

Good luck if you go for it!

Willie

Subject: NNYBirds: ROSS'S GULL - Tupper Lake

Hi folks!

I received a phone call this morning from Larry about a first cycle
Ross's Gull in Tupper Lake. Apparently someone who knows Larry had sent
him a couple images from yesterday as well as a short video - thinking
it was a Bonaparte's or maybe a Little. Larry looked at it and thought
it was a Ross's, calling a couple of us to check it out.

Unfortunately I'm in school so I can't get over there until later, but
in looking over the images Larry sent, it is indeed a First Cycle Ross's
Gull! I've also forwarded the images on to others who agree. In
addition, I just got off the phone with Joan who is looking at the bird
right now.

The directions I have are a bit sketchy as Larry and I had very little
time on the phone, but it is about a mile up Lake Simond Road -I believe
it may be off Gaze Road, but I'll have to double check that and once I
talk with Joan further I might have better directions.

Whoo-hoo! Exciting!

Good Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull in Tupper Lake (Franklin Co.)

2017-01-26 Thread Joan Collins
Hi Everyone,

A 1st winter Ross's Gull was viewed throughout the day today in the Town of
Tupper Lake. It was viewed in back of a private residence on Simon Pond.
The owner, Jack Delehanty, is fine with visitors. Birders stood on his
outside deck at the back of the house to view the gull. Conditions are very
icy and he is worried about people falling. So watch your footing if you
visit! His house is under construction so it was busy at times. Jack is
the son of Charlcie Delehanty, a famous Adirondack birder who is still
birding at age 94! (And she got to see the Ross's Gull today!) As it turns
out, Shawn Hitchens, one of the construction workers, went ice fishing
yesterday. Mike Thibodeau, another construction worker, noticed the gull
when it landed to eat the Walleye eggs Shawn left behind on the ice. Jack
(a birder like his mother) took photos of the gull and his sister Alex (also
a birder, now living in CT, but just happened to be visiting) sent the
photos to Larry Master last night. It is remarkable luck that this all
happened in front of a birder's home!

All the property in the neighborhood is private. As long as fish eggs can
be found outside Jack's house on the edge of Simon Pond, the gull will
likely continue to be viewed at this location. There are lots of ice
fisherpeople on Simon Pond, so it may range. Two adult Bald Eagles and 2
Common Ravens were frightening it off, but it always returned. Stacy
Robinson and I heard the gull vocalize as it flew away when an adult Bald
Eagle flew over it. Mathew Kessler brought a bag of Perch eggs to Jack for
the gull! The Ross's Gull continued to eat the Walleye eggs, but did switch
to the Perch eggs. (It ignored venison that Jack put out!) Of course the
eagles and ravens also noticed the food, so the gull kept an eye on the sky
(which you can see in a couple photos I took).

Visitors were parking along the road at the beginning of the driveway and
walking in. Lake Simond Road is a backroad and it was very icy.

Everyone who visited was able to see the Ross's Gull at close range! Jack
Delehanty said it was more exciting for him to see so many happy birders at
his house today than to see the gull!

I had to type this quickly - no power in Long Lake (bad weather) and we have
a tenuous internet connection that keeps dropping.

[nysbirds-l] Extralimital: State Line Lookout Gyrfalcon

2017-01-26 Thread Sean Sime
A second hand report came in today that the Gyrfalcon paid a visit to the
State Line Lookout along the Palisades in NJ this afternoon. When the bird
departed it flew east across the river over Yonkers.
Gyrfalcons cover a tremendous area and it is well worth checking areas
along the Hudson on the NY side as well as areas of concentrated gulls and
waterfowl in the western corner of the LI Sound.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull, Tupper Lake, NY

2017-01-26 Thread Nick Bonomo
Hi all,

I apologize for the vagueness of this post. A first cycle Ross's Gull
was photographed and video'd somewhere in Tupper Lake, NY. This was a
cell phone photo that was forwarded a few times and eventually got
around to friend John Marshall. Unsure of exact date, but perhaps that
can be pulled from photo data. Figured it was best to get this out
with incomplete info anyway. I will post more if I hear it. Hopefully
locals can check it out.

I'll post the pic to my blog in a few so others can view it.

I am told that the bird was videoed yesterday, January 25. Again, this is
approx fourth hand information but I am posting anyway. I am still not aware of
an exact location in Tupper Lake.

[nysbirds-l] Fw: NNYBirds: ROSS'S GULL - Tupper Lake

Willie

[nysbirds-l] eBird.org: Recent Additions to County Checklists

2017-01-26 Thread Ben Cacace
When working on the NYS eBird Hotspots wiki I'll compare the previous bar
chart list of species with the current one picking up any additions or
deletions. By going to each county's 'Overview' page you can determine the
date the species was added by county. Some are from newly submitted
checklists from several months/years ago.

It isn't possible to spot these additions from old checklists. On the
'Overview' page you can sort on 'First Seen' but if the species wasn't
added recently it won't appear at the top of the list.

For each county on the wiki click the 'Overview' link on the 'Explore a
Location' line:

Yellow highlights a species added for the first time over the past few
months.

*Yates County:*
Olive-sided Flycatcher (23-May-2009)
Cerulean Warbler (4-Jun-1905)

Re: NNYBirds: Re: [nysbirds-l] Fwd: Tupper Lake Ross's Gull (not sure when...)

2017-01-26 Thread Scott Varney
In our quest for rare birds to add to our lists, are we pushing too hard? Is
this what has become of our use of social media? This single post has found
its way to the personal address of a homeowner. I am so regretful for the
lengths that some of us have gone to capture the unusual bird in the unusual
setting. This practice just doesn't feel morally considerate of both the bird
populations and the human code of conduct. A single photo and observations of
this fascinating find would have sufficed.

I hope someone else is feeling this concern,

Sean Sime
