I always commute to work: by bus in winter and by bike in summer.

The question is understood to mean, Who's still commuting by bicycle?.

A hearty thank you to all those that made the SECT happen once again with
tremendous success. All the volunteers did a great job, Rosmarie seemed to
be everywhere all the time, the Finch lunch was ready before the TTT trio
arrived, the Russell lunch had plenty of food for whenever people arrived,
and baggage was well taken care of at both ends.
So is this the Summer's End?

[obc] obc Sept.5 handicap TT

2002-08-22 Thread Datars Sally

If this isn't the place to express opinions on matters relating to the Club,
I don't what is.

I think Avery should be commended for bringing back this event. It was
obviously lots of fun for the first two years. But I have to agree with
Hermann that the lack of consistency makes the event less meaningful. If
there is room for improvement fine. But as anyone can see, and as Celia has
aptly demonstrated, the new method is a step backward. Let's keep in mind
that an age handicap should level the playing field for older riders.
Clearly this is a job for a mathematician. No offence intended to Bruce who
did his best with what he was given and was merely doing as he was asked.
Kudos also to Bruce for his clear explanation of what transpired.

Nevertheless it seems strange that the complaints of one member were given
such weight. It's unfortunate that said member's comments were then
misconstrued and now fewer people are happy with the handicap method than
before the changes were made (including the person who complained)! How
should other members go about getting their voice heard and acted upon?

I suppose it would take a Board meeting to reverse all this and it is too
late for that now. If this were to happen, we could turn this back into a
fun event for all concerned.

FW: [obc] Champlain Bridge - Oh dear!

2002-08-12 Thread Datars Sally

I used the bridge last week in the morning and encountered 3 other cyclists
using the Northbound lane to go South. Normally when I encounter a person
on a bike riding toward me, I inform them in no uncertain terms where they
belong. But in this case, since there were 2 of them together and the
bridge was newly opened, I thought there might be some stupid rule allowing
2 directions in one lane. But such was not the case.

I can't figure out why people are doing this, as there are wide lanes on
both sides for cyclists. Funny you witnessed the same thing Eric. It's
beyond my comprehension. I don't think the white line is the reason for
this but I agree with Eric that perhaps confusion for motorists might be
avoided by removing the white line. Or, what about painting a bicycle
symbol in the lane and an arrow indicating one way. Or overhead light
indicators as used in the motorists lanes. As for the crud collecting along
the side, that will happen with or without bike lanes.

Still and all, a huge improvement, IMHO.

Insanity prevails.
I drove the bridge last night.
I ask why demark the bicycle/trash lane at all?
I witnessed it promote poor behaviour from both a bike rider and a car:
-Bike traveling southbound on the northbound side.
-Car using it as a right-turn lane as you exit the bridge northbound.

To a standard citizen, a white line on the right suggests a paved shoulder
(upon which traffic should not be travelling).
Save the paint, why not just a WIDE right lane?

Yes but they are standing erect when they are carrying those jugs, not

Ok guys, without sounding like I am trying to gang up on you but in this
world there are thousands and thousands of women who carry jugs of water on
their heads which weigh far greater than any cycling helmet. They do this
from a young age right up until they die. Maybe we should be seeking some
sort of relief for carrying water in other countries to make women's life a
lot easier. :)

What happens in other sports? Do people get aching necks and backs while
playing hockey or whatever?

I am not about to attribute medical advice to anyone on the reasons for the
aching back or neck, I am not qualified to do so. There are reasons for the
aching back, I used to get one before helmets came in vogue and my reason is
because the frame was too big. I have never had one as the result of a
properly fitting helmet.

I agree with Les - I think the helmet is a likely culprit. I bought a
new helmet two seasons ago and although it beathes better, is more
comfortable to wear and stays on better, it causes neck pain and
stiffness on long rides because I have to bend my neck more to see
ahead. Fortunately, it has a removable visor, which alleviates it. It
also has air holes in the visor which I sometimes look through on
downhills. Going downhill is often painful because you are going very
fast and have to hyper-extend your neck to see far enough ahead. If
your daughter is under 16 years old, you cannot use Les's solution
unless you are prepared to risk a fine.

 Sent: Monday, March 25, 2002 5:07 PM
 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [obc] Why looking for new TT course, really?

My 2 cents on this topic is why change a good thing when it's not needed?
If the NCC adds building around the area which could create more traffic
 or
add road signs and it makes it difficult for us to ride a proper TT, then
it'll be time to look for another course.but until that happens, I say
 we stay put.
This is the 4th TT course since I started riding 15k TT's in 87 and the
reasons for changing a course has always been a factor of road
changes...such as stop signs or light intersection added to the course
(which didn't give us a choice) but since this is a parkway, I don't think
that will ever happen there. So why even think of changing? What we maybe
could do is put in a word to the NCC that it would be nice to have the
 road
re-paved. I mean doesn't the OBC contributes money to the NCC for the use
of the road for our TT's? Therefore we should have a say.

Cause finding a new course is not easy, there are a lot of factors
 involved,
having it central enough for all 4 corners of the city. You need a lot of
parking space, facilities, look at the security aspect of the course and
easy access by bicycle for those that don't drive. When you look at all
this, this course is the best, we have a free parking lot, it's easy
 access
by bicycle along a picturesque route, the road offers a good shoulder
 where
riders should ride (that's another subject) and we have the museum that
always welcomes us to use their facilities, what more can we ask for?

I'm over my 2 cents but I'd like to add that instead of commenting on
changing a course because of a few bumps on the road, why not volunteer
 for
the event and you'll get the idea that this course is well situated for
running such an event when you have 80 plus riders to look after. I for
 one
would like to see one year where volunteers come forward instead of always
having to ask. So having said that...let's kick off the season on Good
Friday with the wind at our backs and plenty of volunteers :-)

PS: I have to say that I have volunteered on Good Friday for well over 13
years and this year I'm moving on that weekend and I really should be
finishing my packing but chances are I'll still be there.

 Cheers,
 Monique M.

That's the $64 000 question alright. The Aviation Parkway gets worse each
year and I'm not surprised that this winter has been particularly hard on
it, considering the yo-yoing temperatures we've had. Expect to go slower
than you did a few years ago because of the rough road surface.

I've been away from the TT series for a few years, but the past couple of
weeks I've been out on the Aviation Parkway a few times, and it's making
 me wonder a few things:

When is a road surface bad enough that the powers that be decide to
 resurface it?

Anyone have a full suspension TT bike they'd like to sell? ;-)

I suspect it's a combination of my absence, the time of year and my crappy
spring training bike, but man the Aviation parkway seems like it's falling
apart! I'm looking forward to a return to racing this year, but I'm going
to have to add a bit of extra padding to my TT bars!

 Cheers,

I cannot speak for the Board of OBC but as a member (2 years now) I

Until recent both organizations viewed the each other as being

I think the OBC is somewhat important to cycling in Ottawa but I have no
idea about the CfSC other than the numerous complaints about non-co

militant way.

but CFSC and the OBC have now become to cycling what the CAW and
the
Canadian Labour Congress have become to labour and working families. Two
organizations that are working for the same goals but who cannot work
 together. At
a recent Canadian Labour Congress meeting a board member mentioned that
 alot of
what the CAW and Canadian Labour Congress are trying to accomplish is
 being
undermined by infighting between the two Organizations. It was stated that
 so much
more could be accomplished to advance the rights of working families if
 the two

 Another
board member got up and said yes that would be ideal but it would never
 happen.

Yes, it is 16%. I have an inclinometer on my bike and that is what I
measured it to be last year on the Animalathon.

I wish it worked out that way my friend! If it did, I'd be trying to break
the 24 minute barrier instead of the 25 (not to mention buying the beer and
pizza!).

This morning while doing ABC 40 km time trial, I was thinking of the
discussion
regarding handicaps. It was when a Cervélo passed at a speed that made
me feel
that I was standing still that I thought of the following system. It is
based on
equipment and technology.

If your bike/equipment is in the $1,000 to $2,000 range you are at
par
In the $2-3k range you get 20 seconds added to your time
In the $3-4k range you get 40 seconds added to your time
In the $4-5k range, you get 1 minute added to your time
In the $5k plus, you buy the pizza and beer for everyone at Mug's
after the TT.

RE: [obc] Fixing Cut Tires

2001-09-24 Thread Datars Sally

I have successfully repaired, on the side of the road, a tire cut by glass
by inserting a boot made from an old tire. The boot is essentially an
inch-long section of tire that I keep in my saddle bag for just such
purposes. It's the simplest method I know of; no glue is required. I rode
on that tire for the rest of the season (the flat occurred in the Spring).

I hate posting this when the list is so busy, but I need
some advice.
As luck would have it, I hit some glass last week...you know
the sound - pss-pss-pss-pss - on each revolution (some punk
dunderhead threw a beer bottle on Strandherd Rd). I changed
tubes and road home. I went out again yesterday and had
another flat just west of Stittsville - I found a cut in the
tire (which I did not notice when I changed the tube). It is
not a huge hole, but evidently big enough for my tube to
squeeze through and cause a second flat. It is a Specialized
tire and there is still substantial tread left on it. I had
one of those clear vinyl pads with adhesive on it that I
used to get me home, but it is marked for temporary use
only. Is there a way to repair the tire, or should I just
cut my losses and replace it?

-Rod P

PS - I wish car repairs were as cheap as bike repairs.
