The SocialEast Seminar on Networks and Sociability in East European Art will be held at the Courtauld Institute of Art on 23 October 2010. The SocialEast Seminar on *Networks and Sociability in East European Art *provides a forum for the presentation of new research into practices of informal exchange and patterns of alternative communication between experimental artists in the Eastern Bloc. This seminar explores the ways in which unauthorised artistic ideas were able to transgress national and ideological boundaries through networks of friendship and artistic collaboration that flew in the face of an official culture of isolationism, censorship and political control. It focuses on processes of artistic exchange that took shape at a grass-roots level, inventive strategies to surmount bureaucratic obstacles, and the specific meaning of networking in the context of communist Eastern Europe. The seminar also considers the degree to which state-sponsored artistic events, held for Cold War propaganda reasons, could become spaces for unofficial exchange, the roles available to exiled artists and intellectuals in facilitating international communication, collaboration and the circulation of materials, as well as the contribution of curators and intellectuals from the far side of the Iron Curtain in creating informal networks. The SocialEast Forum http://www.socialeast.org is a platform for innovative, transnational research on the art and visual culture of Eastern Europe initiated by Dr. Reuben Fowkes in 2006. Based on active collaboration with institutes of art history across Europe and the involvement of prominent academics, curators and artists, SocialEast has become an internationally-recognised generator of pioneering research into the art history of Eastern Europe during the Cold War. This second SocialEast Seminar at the Courtauld Institute follows on from the SocialEast Seminar on Art and Espionage held in February 2009 and co-organised with Dr. Sarah Wilson. Previous SocialEast Seminars have dealt with issues of Foreign Experience, Art and Ideology, Art and Documentary, Art and Revolution, Art and Memory, Art and Empire and the Legacy of 1968 and were held at Manchester Art Gallery, the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art Budapest, Krakow University, and Mimara Museum Zagreb. The SocialEast Seminar on Networks and Sociability in East European Art is organised in collaboration with Dr. Klara Kemp-Welch of the Courtauld Institute as part of a three year Leverhulme Trust funded project entitled Festivals and Friendships: Networking the Soviet Bloc, examining unofficial exchange between artists from East-Central Europe and former Yugoslavia in the 1960s and 1970s. The seminar is supported by the Leverhulme Trust and the Courtauld Institute Research Forum. To propose a paper for the SocialEast Seminar on Networks and Sociability in East European Art, please send a 200 word proposal and biographical note to i...@socialeast.org The deadline for submitting a proposal is *Monday 15 March 2010*. transversal mailing list | http://lists.t0.or.at/wwsympa.fcgi/info/transversal-list___ oberlist mailing list oberlist@idash.org http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist

The festival presents projects from artist all over the world which stand out because of their integrated tie-in of art, science and media technology. The art processes are based on modern computer technology and last but not least a work resulting from media operations. They are essentially seeking a cross-link to scientific and artistic forms of art. The non-profit association organising the CYNETART-festival named Trans-Media-akademie MA Hellerau (http://t-m-a.de) hosts an international competition of CYNETART, inviting artists and art groups to present their projects every two years. Until February 28th 2010 they can apply with projects that fully utilise digital technologies in their conceptual, creative and performing processes, thereby opening up opportunities for digital performance and their relationship to factors such as time, space, physical presence and social encounters. An international jury with representatives from well-established media culture institutions and experienced scientists with a background in media art history will decide about the winners of the CYNETART-awards, sponsored by commercial enterprises and will also decide on an sponsorship award in the amount of 10.000 Euro as well as on the artist-in-residence-scholarship both funded by the Saxon State Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Fine Arts. Working as an artist in the context of society not only requires special artistic talents and specific interests, but also high social and communicative abilities, endurance, and the desire and ability to reflect and form theories. Artists who want to develop and successfully realize their concepts, strategies, and ways of working in the framework of various living-environments or in interrelation to systems of expertise are expected to understand non-artistic questions, problems, and prejudices, to respond to these professionally, and to ground the relevance of their own work. The study program Art in Context offers four study profiles: Artistic work with social groups (cultural education) Artistic work with cultural institutions (including Artistic Museum/Curatorial Studies) Artistic work in public space Artistic work in the context of media and scientific visual production In consultation with the faculty, the students develop their own individual curricula from these offerings according to their interests. Important goals of the program are not only to engage with the particular characteristics of certain professional fields, but also to learn to set achievable goals, to realize larger tasks in teamwork, to explore new fields of work, and, not least, how to build up and secure an economic livelihood. To achieve these goals, strong emphasis is set on developing the ability to write texts, as well as to conceive, organize, document, and carry out independent research. The Institute for Art in Context participates in numerous cooperation programs with cultural institutions in Berlin and throughout Germany. The participants have full access to the facilities and resources of the University of the Arts, Berlin, as well as other academic institutions in Berlin. The advanced study program (120 ETCS) can be taken full-time over four semesters or part-time over six semesters. It is free of tuition and without any age restrictions. Note: All courses are held in German; the master thesis is written in German. Requirements for admission to the program are: a degree from a recognized Academy (Fine Art, Design, Architecture and alike), at least one year of professional practice, the ability to speak and write in German fluently (Mittelstufe 2/ DSH 2), the submission of a portfolio (pdf-files are accepted) reflecting previous work and achievements, and a statement of the interest to attend the program including a project proposal. They receive a $4,000 stipend, a $500 digital printing credit, an apartment to stay in, a private digital studio, a private darkroom, and 24-hour access to our facility. Our color-managed digital imaging lab features Macintosh workstations equipped with flatbed and film scanners. Output options include Epson 9900, 9800, and 4880 printers that can render continuous gray-scale and color prints onto a broad variety of materials. Artists use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Macromedia Director Studio, Flash, Dreamweaver, Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro software packages, iLife, and more programs. In addition, our traditional lab facility can accommodate just about any black and white process from alternative processes to mural printing. Participants in the residency program are expected to use their month to pursue their own projects: photographing in the area, printing for a specific project or book, and so on. Artists are not obligated to teach at our facility, though we hope that the artists are friendly and accessible to local artists. Work produced by the Artists-in-Residence will also be published in Light Work's publication Contact Sheet. All artists working in photography and related media are eligible to apply to Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program. There is no application form or deadline. All the same, an ever-widening gulf is opening up between the mere desire for theory and an actual relationship of exchange between cultural practices and knowledge production. Unique in Europe, the courses offered by the Theory major address these gaps and fractures by establishing an interplay between advanced theory and the free space of the art school. Surpassing the boundaries of academic convention, the systematic course structure provides students with a substantiated overview and opportunities to try out new forms of text and theory production, of aesthetic and political intervention. The specialisation offers an introduction to the topical drift of aesthetic, political and cultural studies, and aims to lay the foundations for critical and theoretically versed authorship. Specific to this major is the focus on artistic practice and popular and everyday culture, as well as the examination of their social and political dimensions. In the course of this preoccupation withcontemporary discourses, students develop textual, conceptual, and organizational skills enabling them to analyze, shape and reinvent cultural practices. Nearly 71% of the Earth constitutes water. Recently water has been found on other celestial bodies (Moon, Mars). Yet, the world faces serious issues related to water: not only its general availability and management, but also in the context of global warming as well as in the pollution of rivers, lakes and oceans. Space systems are employed in monitoring such aspects as ocean currents and salinity, the decline of the Arctic ice coverage, and the location and size of shoals of fish. Water management often relies on the use of space systems for scientific study as well as for remote operation of pump stations. Water and its resources management affects societies that depend on it for a living as well as for survival, not to mention the destruction of other life forms. Access to water is often a matter of serious political and economic implications. Water associated disasters such as floods and tsunamis are coming to rely heavily on space systems for time critical response and management. Climate change modelling requires a good understanding of hydrological science and this too is helped by the data provided by space systems. [Oberlist] SI* evnt: NEW TIMES NEW MODELS - International conference on governance models of independent cultural centres
NEW TIMES NEW MODELS International conference on governance models of independent cultural centres MARIBOR, Slovenia 28/29/30 January 2010 http://www.pekarna.org/ntnm/?p=32lang=en NEW TIMES NEW MODELS is a conference that will look at the role independent culture plays in the development of society, both on a global and a local level. The conference will focus on inventive, dynamic and sustainable models of governance of independent cultural centres and the relationship between these and public authorities. Over three days, it will provide a space for expert insights, for comparisons between Europe, East and West, and for the sharing of best practice in the area of cultural development. A core issue of New Times New Models is how relations can be improved between public authorities, the private sector and independent cultural centres. The conference will therefore explore the obstacles to these relations: how coordinating legislation and other policy challenges might be addressed; presenting and sharing knowledge on good as well as bad practices and investigating innovative approaches. CONFERENCE THEMES An opening Key Note address by PHIL WOOD (Comedia): »A NEW CREATIVE ECOLOGY« Day 1: WHY INDEPENDENCE? What does independence mean, what is it? What does it mean for society (local community)? What are the responsibilities of both, public authorities and non-profit actors? Why and how those two sectors should/could collaborate and how to protect independence from compromise in such relations? Why public support should be given to independent groups/organisations etc. Day 2: HOW INDEPENDENCE? The conference will take advantage of the unique experiences other countries and centres have to offer in shaping and solving the structural issues arising from the status of being an independent cultural actor. Review of governance models of independent cultural centres in the West Balkans and in the EU should present succeding as well as missed approaches to sustainable models of public-private cultural partnerships. Day 3: NEW MODELS OF PRACTICE Participants will have the opportunity to work together to examine how policies and strategies can be formulated and implemented to establish sustainable participatory models of governance, while maintaining different kinds of independence of cultural centres. The themes will be approached and presented through case-studies, speaker presentations by experts and experienced practitioners, panel debates and by working in smaller breakout groups in order to reach informed conclusions, which will hopefully set guidelines for future models of practice. You are kindly invited to view the draft programme and details at http://www.pekarna.org/ntnm. PARTICIPATION Participation is open to all who have a professional interest in the themes of the conference, and may include members of authorities responsible for culture at national, regional or local levels, as well as workers and professionals, experts and experienced practitioners engaged in the cultural field and cultural policy advisors and researchers. Registration deadline: 15th January 2010 Early bird deadline (-50% conference fee): 31st December 2009 You are encouraged to register early. The new PhD in Practice program is intended to give participants an opportunity to realize their individual research projects in a cooperative environment with a decidedly transdisciplinary and international bent. In societies increasingly based on economies of knowledge, it is crucial for contemporary visual artists to discuss and transform their own respective positions as producers, agents, designers, archivists, and conveyors of knowledge. The PhD in Practice program of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is coordinated by Tom Holert, Silvia Kolbowski, and Johanna Schaffer. It focuses on the consequences of the shifting social status of art and artists by allowing artists in knowledge-based societies to engage in research into these issues. A deliberate emphasis on the epistemological and methodological foundations of the fine arts, its practitioners, and its audiences is a distinguishing feature of the PhD in Practice program. The study program is designed for a duration of four years (240 ECTS credits). During this time the participants will develop and implement their projects analytically and experimentally in coordination with the academic and artistic team of co-participants and faculty. Transdisciplinary modes of working in artistic production will be fostered. Importantly, the ability to write texts, and to conceive, organize, document, and carry out independent research will be developed by supporting program participants in a networked, international and transdisciplinary environment (The Center for Art/Knowledge/CAK). The participants have access to the facilities and resources of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and to the institutions and people that form the broader and expanding network of the Center for Art/Knowledge and the future Doctorate School of the Academy. Participants will be given the means to pursue and develop dissertation work resulting in an artistic project displaying a strong emphasis on methodological reflexivity and documentation. Moreover, participants are expected to take an active part in organizing the program (coordinating workshops, guest lectures, conferences, exhibitions, screenings, etc.). Entry requirements Requirements for admission to the PhD in Practice programare: a degree (Magister, MA or diploma) from a recognized University, and the submission of a portfolio and a written project proposal. Applicants who are already engaged in an artistic or academic career are encouraged to apply. The start of the PhD in Practice program is scheduled for October 2010. further informations: http://emp.akbild.ac.at/portal_en/phd-in-practice Best, Vasilena Gankovska ___ oberlist mailing list oberlist@idash.org http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist

The project is a collaboration between the CAC, Vilnius (Lithuania); Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund (Germany); Muzeum Sztuki, Lodz (Poland); Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Herzliya (Israel); and the Goethe Institut, Warsaw (Poland). The artworks in Building Memory explore different aspects of 60 years of Europe's most problematic and contested history from a focus on architecture, monuments, and community and geo-political perspectives in Poland, the former-DDR (East Germany), and with reference to the foundation of the state ofIsrael. Three of the works are haunted by the specter of the Holocaust and all of them are conceptually sited within post-communist space â so are especially relevant to current cultural debates in Lithuania. (And will be equally engaging and discursive when exhibited at the partner institutions inGermany, Poland, and Israel). Much has been written in the field of the comparative social sciences and humanities about the competing narratives of historical trauma â and the dialectical compass assessing human tragedies animated by Nazism and Soviet Stalinism plus a range of Imperialist and colonialist projects in a host of territories (from Africa, to America, to Ireland, to the Levant). The four works in Building Memory touch on aspects of these debates and furnish their audiences with human â in some instances positive, humorous, and ironical â dramas on the theme that allow for personal reminiscence and reflections. Acknowledging the personal and individuated dimensions of larger, and collective, history is an important characteristic of contemporary art and one of the ways that it can contribute to what is often called memory work. This exhibition hopes to make an important contribution to this process and lend a perspective to the unraveling of memory associated with this psycho-geographical territory in the future. In addition to the exhibition partners the artists' works have been generously assisted by a number of leading institutions. Yael Bartana's Wall and Tower(2009) received support from Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej (MSN) Warsaw and the Museum of the History of the Polish Jews (Warsaw). And Deimantas Narkevicius' Into the Unknown (2009) is a commission by the British Film Institute (BFI), London, and the Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) Dortmund â and was first screened at the BFI Southbank Gallery in September. The Building Memory curatorium is made-up of: Inke Arns, Dortmund; Elisabetta Fabrizi, London; Maria Morzuch and JarosÅaw Suchan, Lodz; Marcel Odenbach, Cologne; Simon Rees, Vilnius; Diana Shoef, Herzliya; and Martin Waelde, Warsaw The exhibition will travel to the partner institutions throughout 2010 and will be accompanied by a scholarly publication to be published in May 2010. [Oberlist] NL* book: Imagine There's No Copyright and No Cultural Conglomerates Too ... by Joost Smiers and Marieke van Schijndel#8232;
Imagine There's No Copyright and No Cultural Conglomerates Too ... By Joost Smiers and Marieke van Schijndel#8232; Theory on Demand no. 4, Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam 2009, 80 pp., ISBN: 978-90-78146-09-4 Brazenly abolishing copyright. That's what Joost Smiers and Marieke van Schijndel do in this essay. But not without reason. Why should we continue offering cultural conglomerates protection for their investments in blockbuster films, bestseller books and pop stars? After all, that's what copyright does. Let's stop dreaming that copyright will enable most artists to earn a comfortable living. It's just not true. And what about those blockbusters, bestsellers and stars? Either you like them or you don't, but that's not the point. Have you ever thought about the damage they do to our cultural democracy and how they undermine cultural diversity and variety? Isn't the essence of democracy that many different opinions can be heard and contested? And so it is with films, novels, theatre, music, design and the visual arts, in particular. One therefore leads to the other. Not only do we have to liberate ourselves from copyright - and with the floodtide breakthrough of digitalisation this legal tool is already succumbing - we also have to stop tolerating a few cultural conglomerates controlling our cultural communication. We are therefore going to cut them into numerous slices by means of strict application of competition law. The result is a normal cultural market: a level playing field for the many artists who are now still being pushed out of the pubic eye and ear by the cultural conglomerate' aggressive marketing. The good news is therefore: for the first time all those artists will be able to earn a decent living from their work. If these fundamental reforms of cultural markets are not already explosive enough, then wait for the bombshells in the concluding chapter of Imagine there's no Copyright and no Cultural Conglomerates too . It turns out to be hard to justify other intellectual property rights, too. Do we, for example, need to patent medicines? The authors have good grounds to assume this is harmful to public health. leading to an MFA degree. It is located in the heart of Manhattan, just blocks from the Chelsea gallery district. For students who want to improve their writing and advance their knowledge of contemporary art, theory, and history, this program offers specialized instruction from practitioner-teachers led by the Chair of the program, writer David Levi Strauss. Current faculty include philosophers Robert Hullot-Kentor and Tom Huhn, poet and critic Raphael Rubinstein, New York Times critics Ken Johnson and Claudia La Rocco, artist/writers Suzanne Anker, Susan Bee, and Bill Beckley, and writer and theorist Thyrza Nichols Goodeve. The faculty is joined by visiting critics and scholars who come into the program in various capacities on a frequent basis. Recent guests have included writers and theorists Susan Buck-Morss (on "Visual Empire"), Avital Ronell (on Nietzsche's defense of art), W.J.T. Mitchell (on "The Lives and Loves of Images"), Michael Taussig (on drawings in anthropological fieldwork journals), and Sylvère Lotringer (on Paul Virilio and "The Itinerary of Catastrophe"); poe t/critics Ann Lauterbach, Bill Berkson, and John Yau; and critics Arthur Danto, Michael Brenson, Dave Hickey, Katy Siegel, Nancy Princenthal, and Eleanor Heartney. Last year, legendary art historian Leo Steinberg taught a special seminar for our students. In addition to the required foundation courses in the historical and philosophical bases of criticism, students participate in three levels of writing practicums, leading to the completion of their thesis in the final term. The small class size allows a great deal of one-on-one time with the faculty and extensive dialogue with other students. We concentrate on the essay as form, as well as on shorter forms of review, and learn criticism by doing it. Students' writing and reviews are published regularly on our online magazine Degree Critical, and art magazine editors are involved in the program in various capacities. The thesis that students write at the end of their course of study is intended to be a substantial work of criticism. We want students to come out of this program able to write in the world. >From its inception, this program has had a special emphasis on the history and current transformations of the image. We live in an age when images have an inordinate power over usâthe power to create and direct desire, to influence public opinion, to comfort and inflame. The critics of tomorrow must study images, in all of their manifestations, in order to better understand how we are subject to them. To apply online, go to http://artcriticism.sva.edu/admissions.html. Generous departmental scholarships are available on a competitive basis. -- Moldova Young Artists Association Oberliht http://www.oberliht.org.md . . . . . . . . . . . http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist portal informational pentru arta si cultura din Moldova information gateway for arts and culture from Moldova Original Message Subject: [balkans] CfP: Cities in turmoil From:pavlos hatzopoulos phatzopou...@re-public.gr Date:Tue, November 10, 2009 13:26 To: balk...@yahoogroups.com -- ** http://www.re-public.gr/en/?p=1853 Online journal Re-public http://www.re-public.gr/en invites contributions for a special issue dedicated to *Cities in Turmoil*. Cities matter politically, not merely as sites where the political occurs, but as part of the political itself, participating in the reconfiguration of citizenship. This is the space in which local topographies are interconnected and re-divided, the container and stage of political conflict, where formal institutions and non-state movements develop agendas, often aimed at releasing and mobilizing affect, such as ridicule, anger, apathy and indifference. Within this context, urban turmoil is at the same time perceived as a threat and as an opportunity and its legacy equally demonised and mythologized. Inhabitants of Athens are as familiar with the poetics of paralysis as they are accustomed to the violence that often accompanies it; inertia and upheaval seem to take turns as protagonists in the urban life, feeding into the collective imagination. Reactions to paralysis range from voices of confusion to resignation, to protest and anger. Such was the case last December, when residents of Athens, Greeks and immigrants alike, with diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds took to the streets to protest against state violence after the murder of a teenager by a policeman in the centre of Athens. In the following weeks, the city was shaken by a wave of violent rallies, during which agents and symbols of government, nationalism and capitalism were targeted and public space reclaimed by those previously excluded from it. The events were preceded by a long period of silence, when inhabitants of the capital were portrayed by the mainstream media as disaffected with formal politics, refusing to engage with the state and retrieving instead to their own private spheres. The interchangeable discourses of apathy and anger employed by the media became prevalent and were subsequently adopted and reformulated by a large part of the citizens themselves, but also state institutions and representatives. The conditions and processes that led to the December events, may have brought Athens to the fore, but are not specific to Greece. Indeed, rapid urbanisation across the world has forced new relationships between citizen and state, mediated and articulated by rapidly growing and changing cities. The city acts both as the seat of government and as site of resistance but rapid growth and a changing population reconfigures the very notion of citizenship, challenges what is the public and the private and calls for other modes of participation in its political affairs. Submissions may deal with the theme from various disciplinary perspectives and may be about (but not restricted to) the following: - The contestation of urban public space; - Negotiation between the urban margins and the centre, between the formal and the informal, between local residents with recognised rights and those excluded from the right to the city; - Politics of apathy and anger in the city: processes of radicalisation and the generation of multiple articulations of violence; - The inscription of memory, the traces of uprisings on the city. Essays should be approximately *1,500 1,800 words *. Please submit contributions in any electronic format to guest editors of the special issue Gia Galati and Kostantis Kastrissianakis e-mail: giagalati AT hotmail.com andkostak7 AT gmail.com Deadline for submissions: *Friday, 15 January 2010* [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] __ Balkan Academic News ___ oberlist mailing list oberlist@idash.org http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist

[Oberlist] DE* call/res: 16th International Studio Program of the ACC Galerie Weimar
Weimar, Germany ACC Gallery 16th International Studio Program of the ACC Galerie Weimar and the City of Weimar Beyond Desire http://www.acc-weimar.de/studio The non-profit organization ACC (Autonomous Cultural Center) originated in 1987, before the fall of the Berlin wall, when students occupied a derelict Renaissance building in the center of the town where Goethe (inevitably) had had his first residence in Weimar (1776/77). Shortly before the reunification, ACC protagonists were able to secure the house with the aid of private sponsors. The institution now consists of a gallery and a café and offers a cultural program that includes theater, literature, and lecture series. The studio is located in the historical Städtisches Atelierhaus (Municipal studio building), about ten minutes walk to the ACC Galerie Weimar in the town center. In addition to the visiting international artists, the well-lit studio building accommodates ten other Weimar artists. ROOM AND BOARD: Rent-free furnished apartment in the Weimar Atelierhaus with telephone/answering machine and DSL internet; meals are available at ACC Café-Restaurant at reduced prices (70%). PARTICIPATION: Artists who would like to produce works of art in accordance with the outlined theme can apply. The jury will select three artists, each of whom will spend four months living and working in Weimar. Students applications cannot be accepted. DISPLAY AND EXHIBITION: The ACC Galerie Weimar employs a curator who develops a conception and a publication together with the artists. During the residency the curator will decide together with the artists whether and how the selected work(s) will be presented at the ACC Galerie Weimar in 2010. Where appropriate, works of art will be displayed in public spaces in Weimar for time periods to be agreed upon with the artists. In case of a group exhibition of all Studio Program participants a small catalogue will be produced. It is intended that the artists are present during the preparation and for the opening of the exhibition. ACC COLLECTION: The former participants of the program left one or two important works of art completed during their stay in Weimar to become part of the ACC Galerie Collection. It is up to the future participants to follow this tradition. The gallery and the artist(s) will select the works together. WORK PERIODS: February 1st May 31st, 2010; June 1st September 30th, 2010; October 1st, 2009 January 31st, 2011 STIPEND: The selected artists will receive a monthly stipend of 1.000. In order to receive the stipend the artists have to live in Weimar during the work period. The artists are also expected to hold a lecture/talk at the ACC Galerie Weimar at the end of his/her stay in Weimar. In addition we offer free entry to public municipal institutions, such as the Museum of the History of Weimar, and to the museums of the Weimar Classic Foundation, such as the Weimar Art Collection, the Goethe National Museum, the Bauhaus Museum, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Dutchess Anna Amalia Library. Participants are responsible for their own telephone bills and have to arrange for their own medical insurance. LANGUAGES: English and German are official languages of the International Studio Program. Participants should have a solid grasp of either English or German. TRAVEL: The participants must cover their own travel costs, although the program attempts to find additional funding in cooperation with the artists. The application rules are enclosed in the entry form. data limita: 07/12/09 - receiving date Kontakt: ACC GALERIE WEIMAR International Studio Program Burgplatz 1+2 D-99423 Weimar Germany studioprog...@acc-weimar.de http://www.acc-weimar.de sursa:artservis -- Moldova Young Artists Association Oberliht http://www.oberliht.org.md . . . . . . . . . . . http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist portal informational pentru arta si cultura din Moldova information gateway for arts and culture from Moldova ___ oberlist mailing list oberlist@idash.org http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist

To: gcomp...@chass.utoronto.ca CALL FOR PAPERS: Transverse 2009-2010: Censorship I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. (Voltaire) The dirtiest book of all is the expurgated book. (Walt Whitman) Transverse, the graduate journal of the University of Torontos Centre for Comparative Literature, welcomes academic papers, literary reviews, creative writing, and art on the topic of Censorship. The journal will be published online in the spring of 2010 at chass.utoronto.ca/complitstudents/transverse For as long as people have been speaking and writing, there have been authorities vested with the power to determine what could be spoken and by whom. The censor was an officer of Rome who, from the 4th century BC, was responsible for the honourable task of upholding good governance. Although censorship was for the Romans a positive thing in that it guaranteed the success of the state, the connotations of censorship today are, at least in the West, undeniably negative. What has censorship meant at different historical moments? What is the status of censorship today? How has it evolved? In order to mark Transverses shift to a web-based journal, we are devoting this issue to exploring all issues related to censorship, a topic whose dimensions are complicated by the rapid transformation of communication technology. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: Ancient Censorship Early Roman conceptions of censorship The death of Socrates Censorship in ancient Greek drama Early Modern Censorship Miltons Areopagitica Dramatic versus print censorship in Elizabethan and Jacobean England Ancien Regime permission and privilege Women and self/familial/societal censorship Government versus inquisition censorship in Golden Age Spain and the evolution of censorship in Spain from 1558-1631 Censorship and Conquest of the New World Parody, satire, irony: rhetoric and censorship Letters and the Art of the Unsaid Nineteenth-Century Censorship Sexology and Censorship Imagined Communities and Censorship Revolution and Censorship New World Independence, Birth of Nations, Censors Twentieth-Century Censorship McCarthyism Censorship in the USSR, Cuba Censorship under fascism/totalitarian regimes Feminism and censorship Banned books Contemporary Censorship Censorship and Queer studies Censorship and money or social status Literary representations of censorship Censorship and surveillance Is the Google hegemony a form of censorship? Censorship in the age of Wikipedia, open source software and media, blogs, Facebook Is the prohibitive pricing of books and other media a form of censorship? Artistic responses to censorship Etc. Guidelines: Critical essays should be between 3000 and 4000 words, in Microsoft Word, MLA format with appropriate citations. Literary reviews can be on any work relating to the topic. We are looking for submissions 500-800 words in length, with publication information attached. Creative writings we accept poems and short stories (1500 word max.) Deadline for application is 10 November 2009 Open to single channel video works. Exhibition dates: 14 November till 12 December 2009, Amsterdam, Netherlands. OPEN CALL: Europa Neurotisch # 2 Europa Neurotisch is the second part of the Petersburg Project Space excursion into Europe. The first part was held in November 2008, and was based on the question how do artist react to, and deal with the concept Europe. For the second part we would like to raise the question: what is the image of Europe? How does it look? How do artists visually deal with the continent they live in, or look at from the outside? What almost first comes to mind when thinking of images representing Europe are maps and charts; a google image search for Europe seems to confirm this. However in a search for America or Asia the results of images that in some way visually represent those continents come up quite quickly. But is there a something like a European consciousness? In a speech delivered by German filmmaker Wim Wenders in 2006 he addressed this quite strongly; he argued that the American dream is a dream built up by images, and that ?a vision has to be attached to feelings, to places, to memories?. So what then you could wonder is the European dream? Maybe Mr Wenders is right when he says: ?Europe, now you see it, now you don?t? Since the show is not intended as a political argument or statement in any way, but more as an exploration of a European image or maybe even the European dream or nightmare the works we are looking for are diverse, from personal political to audiovisual snippets: as long as it deals in some way with the European heart and soul we are interested. Every week a new series of works will be screened in the exhibition space in the evening: Bar Europa. The idea behind this is to deformalize the exhibition space, and to deconstruct any static presence of the subject itself: Europa. This call is open to individual artists, as well as collectives. There is no restriction to length of the works or date created, however we only accept single channel videoworks. -- Moldova Young Artists Association Oberliht http://www.oberliht.org.md . . . . . . . . . . . http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist portal informational pentru arta si cultura din Moldova information gateway for arts and culture from Moldova Original Message Subject: [transversal] Call for Proposal - Digital, Electronic and Media Arts Symposium From:Oudeis info.oud...@gmail.com Date:Wed, October 7, 2009 12:55 To: transversal-l...@eipcp.net -- CALL FOR PROPOSAL Digital, Electronic and Media Art Symposium Trapped in Freedom From 5^th to 12^th december 09 Oudeis Le Vigan / France It is by chance, in a dead street's far end that we faced a white padded door, opaque windows secured by bars and a turned off neon. Trapped in Freedom, the inscritpion was unlit, we could imagine it shining in the night a deep red and evocative light. This sentence questionned us all the more we didn't know this place's nature. A one evening peculiar cabaret drawn from a David Lynch imagination, a libertine meeting place, rare liquors and cigars club... Anyway, this place seemed contained in its wording an entire paradox, one of a sensual pleasure, assumed, shown and restrained to this area, condensed behind the walls and hidden from prying eyes. This paradox was for the more obvious that the street was isolated, empty, but close to a wide and passing road. As if the answer or possibility for an emancipated freedom was actually just before our eyes. An obvious fact so strong that it cannot be assumed or seen as real. It is this exact feeling which this place was emiting, an unrealistic atmosphere, a suspended time, a breach given to the onlooker in an innocent way, still tantalizing. No way between an assumed freedom, the idealized one, the return to nature, the emancipation from the powerful, the ethical, racial, social and political conflicts anihilation... Live freedom as a release of burdens due to our environment. To focus on a will, a space peculiar to oneself, to individualities... To adopt freedom, take it fully, means to seize new spaces, to make new choices... And yet the idea is not that simple. Freedom is a delicate notion and value, fascinating, unpredictable. As for who takes some liberty may take it off others, who enjoys freedom may loose a secured framework, a set of references and foundings, who wants to be free may be put in danger because of his/her own choices. Trapped in Freedom synthesizes the paradox of a dear and desired state at the same time feared and mostly let in an utopic idea condition. Any social project is based on consensus and thereof asks for new definitions of individual liberties while arising new ones relative to a global, general and becoming homogenic corps. Oudeis, a cultural organization in Le Vigan (France), has decided to dedicate its coming Digital, Electronic and Media Art Symposium on this issue. Thus, several exhibits will take place in town in different places from the 5^th to 13^th december 2009. There are two types of call for proposal for thwo specific projects. First, a video exhibition. Oudeis invites all artists interested in the issue Trapped in Freedom to send us a proposal and short bio by the 7^th november. The second project open to participants is a temporary and free editing workshop. Temporary because it will last only the time of the Symposium, free because it will be nomad and will be moved from place to place to mix contents. A silkscreen printing workshop will be set and an edition will be publish, with critical contents, poems, analysis and esthetics statements, drawings, photographies, collages... All produced in real time, in the manner of performance, in front of the public. [Oberlist] FI* cfp: The 6th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research
The 6th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research https://www.jyu.fi/en/congress/iccpr2010 Welcome to the 6th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research, Jyväskylä, Finland, 24 - 27 August 2010. The Conference will be organized by The Cultural Policy unit of Jyväskylä University in collaboration with the International Journal of Cultural Policy. ICCPR2010 aims to provide a space for explorations on cultural policies, their meanings, roles and impact in an interdisciplinary and international environment. The explorations at the ICCPR2010 in cultural policy are not restricted to the contemporary period, or geographical area. The conference neither assumes a fixed understanding of the concept of culture or the concept of policy. ICCPR2010 generally sees cultural policies as regularization, promotion and discouragement of practices and values by institutions and individuals, public and private. The concept of policy can also be regarded as a regularizing aspect of politics. Furthermore, ICCPR2010 maintains that cultural policies and their effects can be explicit and implicit, or latent. In the Nordic countries, where the ICCPR2010 takes place, the state has had a strong role in promoting and financing culture. However, economic and cultural developments, such as globalization, enforce the need to investigate semi-public, non-governmental and private, voluntary and commercial efforts as policy processes with wide effects. Therefore, the ICCPR2010 expects to host a whole variety of papers. ICCPR2010 theme Truths, Taboos and Myths of Cultural Policy refers to the ways in the field of cultural policy takes place and positions itself in praxis and research. This is not a forced topic on any paper proposals, but the organisers seek to motivate prospective paper-givers to be reflective about cultural policy and self-reflective about research. ICCPR2010 warmly welcomes participants to Jyväskylä, the city of design and education in the heart of Finland. -- Moldova Young Artists Association Oberliht http://www.oberliht.org.md . . . . . . . . . . . http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist portal informational pentru arta si cultura din Moldova information gateway for arts and culture from Moldova ___ oberlist mailing list oberlist@idash.org http://idash.org/mailman/listinfo/oberlist

Peripheries, outskirts, fringe suggest, that someone is working away from the center, but not outside, or in abruption. Do we have to move toward the center- toward the interior? Fiskars, Finland perioada: 2010 Onoma FISKARS ARTIST RESIDENCY Call for artists http://www.onoma.org/en/residency Fiskars village is situated approximately 90 km west of Helsinki, in the municipality of Pohja/Pojo. The Artisans, Designers and Artists Cooperative of Fiskars has been active from 1996, and today the community has 104 members, representing over 20 different arts, design and crafts professions. The larger apartment, with accomodation for 1-4 persons, has a large fully equipped kitchen, living room, bathroom, workroom and bedroom. Neither pets nor smoking are permitted inside the building.
