Trying to build master led me to another error when building extra tools
while running bloody. This error was due to the fact that the tools are
compiled using headers from master illumos-omnios, while linking agains the
system installed libc. And this got me thinking if I am running the latest
bloody.
So I went do download the latest bloody iso, and on the web site there is a
little problem: the OmniOS_Text_bloody_20140723.iso does not install
the omnios-8e364a8 as written above.
Is there a new bloody text-install iso that is not yet uploaded?
I upgraded after installing the one that's available, and now I can build
bloody. This was another part of the answer to my question :)

The thing that I find odd is that dependencies are gathered from the
build system and not from the set of packages OmniOS is currently building.
If we could find a way to do that, couldn't we have a way to build any
version of OmniOS on any other version?
Modulo flag days, illumos-omnios is built self-contained save for the
usr/src/tools portion. The rest of omnios-build isn't, and this comes from
the early bootstrapping days. One could spend time allowing this to occur,
but given we update bloody pretty much every two weeks now, I'd rather
spend time making omnios-build properly generate dependencies and build a
dependency graph to dispatch component builds in parallel. Right now, it
builds based on bash's associative-array sort... ewww.
