[osol-discuss] Re: Add devicealias while installing Solaris 10

2006-09-25 Thread Jürgen Keil
I have a network card that needs a driveralias added
to Solaris before it will work successfully - the
drivers are bundled with Solaris 10. Is there any way
that I can add a driver alias while I'm installing
Solaris, so that I can complete the installer as if
the driveralias were present on the install CD?

Yes, this is possible, if you have an ITU (install time update ?)
floppy or cd media. Such an ITU can add additional drivers or
driver binding entries.

http://www.tools.de/solaris/itu/
has an example. Both the elxl and iprb driver on that ITU
contain a package that just adds a few additional driver alias
entries to the elxl / iprb driver so that the rest of the installation
should be able to find the newly supported NIC.

[osol-discuss] Announcement : LiveUSB scripts for Belenix released

2006-09-25 Thread Anil verve
Hello all,

I've been working on creating a liveUSB for a few weeks and now have a script ready :)

This makes it really easy to get a bootable USB with OpenSolaris on it
by installing Belenix 0.5.0 on a USB pen drive. Belenix is now the
first
OpenSolaris distribution able to run off a USB drive, and one of the
few *nix distributions that boot and run off a thumb drive.

Steps:
-

1.Download the file http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/binfiles/usbdump1.0.tar.gz

2.Extract
the contents to a temporary directory and cd into it.

3.Run the script as : ./usbdump path to belenix 0.5.0 iso

 ex: ./usbdump /home/belenix-0.5.0.iso

4.Now follow the instructions on the screen.

Note:

* currently you need a minimum 1 gb Thumb drive (as the script basically dumps the entire live CD contents onto the usb).

* A smaller iso is being worked on, one that will fit onto a 512 mb pen drive.

* Version 0.5.1 onwards the script will be incorporated into the LiveCD

* I'd also get these changes into the OpenSolaris LiveMedia project so
a USB bootable Solaris express is possible. This would require
stripping down the default install, to enable the OS to fit into a 1 gb
drive.

A whole bunch of new possibilities open up with a LiveUSB, which is the stuff of future work.

Regards,

Anil

Quite cool achievement!

Also, I'd like to note here that installation of Nexenta on removable
media like USB was there starting from Alpha 2 or so.

The problem we didn't resolve at that time is that when after
installation you move USB pen to different HW configuration it will not
boot without prior tweaking of root partition path.

Did you resolve it on Belenix yet?

That's probably a similar issue you need to solve when booting from

[osol-discuss] This Thurs, Sept. 28th (Silicon Valley) Trusted Solaris, when hardening up Solaris matters!

2006-09-25 Thread Alan DuBoff
This Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, we're glad to have a couple nice presentations
for folks.

First off, we'll be having a short presentation on the Sun Studio tools. Find
out what new features have been added recentely, what new features are being
worked on, and how you can use Sun Studio to create programs that run on
Linux as well as Solaris. This enables our community to develop applications
that will compile for either Solaris x64, Solaris SPARC, and Linux. Luan Yin,
one of the leads from the tools group will be at SVOSUG to share this
information with you.

The main presentation will feature Glenn Faden giving you the nuts and bolts
on Trusted Solaris. How many folks know that Sun has putback trusted
extentions to OpenSolaris? Did you know those changes are coming to S10 via
the update channel (Glenn should have more info on that). To some this might
not seem very important, but consider that knowing the source our data is
coming from, who sent it, and where that data has been routed might be more
valuable to you than you might suspect as we move forward in the future. This
is truely technology that makes you wonder how security will be on our
computers in the future. Knowing that people can access your computer from
anywhere in the world once connected can certainly fuel the thought process
on keeping unwanted traffic off of them.

OpenSolaris has had role based access included with it for quite some time,
and this lends to helping create a trusted environment. Glenn will be able to
explain to you how labels and other security features can be used in a full
trusted environment.

Hear it straight from the folks that work in Sun's security department within
Solaris engineering, and learn how these ideas will play a big role in the
future of computing.

[osol-discuss] Pentium D Dual Core 64-bit kernel problem

2006-09-25 Thread Ron Halstead
I have just installed nv47 on a new Asus P5WD2-E M/B with Pentium D Dual Core
cpu and 975x chipset. The machine boots a 64 bit kernel, which is not as stable
as the same OS version on a Intel 32-bit single core machine.

Is there a way to 1) force the installation of the 32-bit OS or 2) force the
machine to boot the 32-bit kernel? Apparently, the CPU has EM64T support and
Solaris sees a 64-bit cpu.

I've tried Solaris 10 u2 and Solris 10 9/06 on the new machine with the same,
unstable, 64-bit results.

Any help is appreciated. At this rate, my older machine is better than the new
one.

You can pass kernel/unix as an argument to multiboot in grub, which
will cause the 32-bit kernel to boot.
It would also be good to know why the 64-bit kernel doesn't seem as
stable, as that's something that should
be fixed. :) Any information you can provide in a bug report filed at
bugs.opensolaris.org would be greatly

appreciated.

The 32 bit kernel is always installed; it can be booted by adding
kernel/unix to the multiboot command in the grub menu.

What do you mean by being unstable? What are the problems you
are seeing?

Why do you expect this to be a property of the 64 bit kernel?

The 32 bit and 64 bit kernel are basically same, just compiled with
different options.

interface names are different in solaris, they depend on the actual
nic you have, for example, realtek cards are named rtls0, check in the
hcl [0] to see if your nick is supported at all. you can list the
available interfaces using ifconfig -a
the same thing can be said about the sound card, you must check if
there is support for your sound card in the hcl, there are some third
party free sound card modules in [1]
also on [2] there is a link to the page of a company that makes oss
drivers for solaris, there is a trial version that works for 30 days
or you can pay to have a full working version.

on a side note, there are great solaris manuals at sun.com, you should
give them a go when you have some free time
hope it helps

Both the 32-bit and 64-bit kernels are installed on x86 systems; systems
that are 64-bit capable will boot the 64-bit kernel by default after
installation.
You can override this; have a look at section 4.2 of:

How exactly is the 64-bit kernel unstable?

[osol-discuss] [Announcement] SUNWlibC is Now Available

2006-09-25 Thread Kuldip Oberoi

Howdy,

I'd like to announce the immediate availability of the SUNWlibC package:

  http://opensolaris.org/os/downloads/devpro/

This package contains important shared libraries that many C++
applications, such as the Java VM, are dependent on:

  libC.so.*
  libCrun.so.*
  libCstd.so.*
  libiostream.so.*
  libdemangle.so.*

This package is available under the OpenSolaris Binary License:

  http://opensolaris.org/os/licensing/opensolaris_binary_license/

Solaris Express builds previously included these libraries ( still do),
but other OpenSolaris-based distributions or builds have not been able
to include and redistribute them until now.

Thanks!

Hello all,

I've been trying to get my Dlink (3com) card w/ Marvell Yukon to come up on

the device strings. The driver will come up if I force it to 100fdx, but will
not work with autoneg on or if I try to force it 1000fdx.

The switch and cables work perfectly with 2 other gige cards (windoze, linux),
so that is not the likely problem.

I've installed the skgesol_x64v8.12.1.3 driver, as the 32 bit card syskonnect
driver only has 32 bit drivers.

My output from port props (i turned off autoneg, otherwise it doesn't work)
