At the moment I have mainly worked with it on devstack with the
developments. I am in the process of testing it with the fedora packages.
If you want to work with the flat networking then I suggest that you look
 at: http://wiki.openstack.org/ConfigureOpenvswitch
This will show you want to configure to enable flat networks with the
 private network.
 Thanks

 Great, thanks Logan.

Also, for anyone on the list that aren't aware of it; last night I
discovered the Openstack Operations Guide at:

It contains lots of answers to questions that I'd not found anywhere

[Openstack] Openstack Metadata Service

2013-03-18 Thread Bruno Parreira
Hi,

We have deployed OpenStack using the guide provided at the OpenStack
webpage:

Host A : controller node

Host B : network node

Host C : compute node

Everything went fine during the installation process, but when we try to
instantiate a VM, the logs show that the VMs are unable to connect to the
metadata service (169.254.169.254).

We've tried this with the Ubuntu image and the Cirros image, but the result
is the same.

From what I understood, without the retrieval of the metadata from the
server, the keys are not downloaded to the VM, is this correct?

Because we can ping the IP address assigned to the VM from the network node,
and if we assign a floating IP to the VM, the public IP also responds to
ping replys.

But we are unable to ssh into the VMs, with the error: Read from socket
failed: Connection reset by peer

If we try to telnet into the public IP this is the result:

controller@controller:~$ telnet x.x.x.x 22

Trying x.x.x.x...

Connected to x.x.x.x.

Escape character is '^]'.

SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1

Protocol mismatch.

Connection closed by foreign host.

Questions:

In which node is the metadata service supposed to be running (compute,
network or controller)?

Should the IP address 169.254.169.254 be reachable outside the VM?

Is there an alternative to the metadata service?

Kind regards,

Bruno Parreira

Re: [Openstack] Allocating dynamic IP to the VMs

2013-03-18 Thread Sylvain Bauza

Hi,

I don't understand your business. Should you have a 192.168.1.0/24
network for management, you could also assign an external network with
Quantum based on the same subnet (ie. 192.168.1.0/24).

When creating a floating IP pool, Quantum does require at least 3 things :
 - the CIDR
 - the beginning and ending IPs
 - the external gateway

So, based on what I previously said, you only need to create a
192.168.1.0/24 in Quantum with .1-.100 (for example) as the range, .254
being the external gateway.

Thanks,
-Sylvain

Re: [Openstack] Allocating dynamic IP to the VMs

2013-03-18 Thread Sylvain Bauza

Could you please tell me your physical network CIDR ?
Anyway, what you need is not requiring having a floating IP pool inside
the same network, you can also play with static routing : if your
physical host does have a default gw, you can create a static route from
this gw to the VM network gateway. And on the VM network gateway, do the
same...

2013-03-18 Thread Guilherme Russi
Hello Chathura, I'm getting error when allocating floating IPs, can you
allocate them? I'm creating my networking following this script:

https://raw.github.com/EmilienM/openstack-folsom-guide/master/scripts/quantum-networking.sh

Thank you.

Guilherme.

 Thanks Sylvain,

There must be a way of doing this without having to do anything with my
default gateway of my physical network? . Even if I have to I do not wan to
do anything to the physical gateway. All I need is a way to let the VMs get
a dynamic IP from the physical network. How can I do this. For example this
can be done on virtual box using a bridge adapter which maps the VM in to
 the physical network.

Could you please tell me your physical network CIDR ?
Anyway, what you need is not requiring having a floating IP pool inside
the same network, you can also play with static routing : if your physical
host does have a default gw, you can create a static route from this gw to
the VM network gateway. And on the VM network gateway, do the same...

  Hi,

I don't understand your business. Should you have a 192.168.1.0/24network
for management, you could also assign an external network with
Quantum based on the same subnet (ie. 192.168.1.0/24).
When creating a floating IP pool, Quantum does require at least 3 things
 :
  - the CIDR
  - the beginning and ending IPs
  - the external gateway

So, based on what I previously said, you only need to create a
192.168.1.0/24 in Quantum with .1-.100 (for example) as the range, .254
 being the external gateway.

 Thanks,

From what I understand floating IP's are used when you have a public

that causes nova to reject quota update requests that have unrecognized
quotas. The problem is that older versions of nova had two quota

because of the nova/cinder split. Thus, all clients that operate

also the case that novaclient and probably horizon have not been updated

The correct fix will probably be to revert the nova merge that causes

Re: [Openstack] Grizzly Dashboard Quota Problem...

2013-03-18 Thread Gabriel Hurley
We landed a fix in Horizon yesterday ( tracked in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/horizon/+bug/1155876 ) that addresses this problem
for the Grizzly RC.

Nova should have followed a proper deprecation path here and accepted the
parameters in this release and reject them (if they really must) in Havana.
Stripping them out in novaclient and logging a deprecation warning would also
have been an acceptable solution.

In general, any backwards-incompatible change in an API needs to be versioned
and/or properly deprecated.

Re: [Openstack] Openstack Metadata Service

2013-03-18 Thread Gui Maluf
From what I understood, without the retrieval of the metadata from the
server, the keys are not downloaded to the VM, is this correct?

Yes. This is correct.

AFAIK in Essex, the metadata service was pointed out through iptables.
So there was a rule that DNAT the metadata service to the CC machine.

I had this metadata problem too, but I couldn't find out a proper solution.
My guess is that this problem is related to the Gateway/Router in
Folsom+Quantum installation. Or maybe in the metadata_host in the
nova.conf file.

I hope someone could clarify this things for us.

From what I understood, without the retrieval of the metadata from the

Because we can ping the IP address assigned to the VM from the network node,

 ping replys.

But we are unable to ssh into the VMs, with the error: Read from socket

 Questions:

In which node is the metadata service supposed to be running (compute,

Should the IP address 169.254.169.254 be reachable outside the VM?

Is there an alternative to the metadata service?

We have some additional checks on the names of instances such as

- Maximum length (to be compatible with Active Directory)

- Restrict characters which are usable

Is there a configurable set of parameters for these checks (or a user exit
to define a functional check) ?

If there is not something like this, are there examples of similar exits
which we could model a patch on ?

[Openstack] TC candidacy

2013-03-18 Thread Eric Windisch
Hello,

I'd like to run for a seat on the Technical Committee. I am a Principal
Engineer at Cloudscaling, but I am running as an individual.

For over two years, beginning with Bexar, I have been working to bring working
OpenStack solutions to customers. My first code contributions landed in Cactus,
but my contributions have not been limited to code alone. I propose and drive
summit and mailing list discussions, contribute to those discussions led by
others, have begun contributing to packaging efforts, and soon intend to land
documentation changes.

The code I do write and review tends to be in Oslo. Working with Oslo, and with
OpenStack deployments, I have the perspective to work across projects.

Before my involvement with OpenStack, in my former role as the owner and
technical director of a VPS hosting company, I was already building open source
cloud infrastructure as early as 2007. For years preceding the existence of
OpenStack, I've worked on many of the technical problems and challenges facing
a cloud, not only those related to virtualization, networking, and storage, but
also billing, metering, and user interfaces.

The number of companies and contributors involved in OpenStack is exploding.
Each conference has been shockingly larger than the last. We have new projects
being added in each 6-month release. These are problems that the TC must be
prepared to deal with. We need technical leadership that understands the
problems of these projects, can help them succeed, and especially for those
individually elected seats -- can bring them to together.

I am deeply committed to the success of OpenStack and to open source cloud. I
thank you for your consideration and ask that you please vote for me.

Regards,
Eric Windisch

Re: [Openstack] Openstack Metadata Service

2013-03-18 Thread Anne Gentle
Hi all,

I've got a doc bug against the Basic Install guide that I've been trying to
understand. [1]

The first issue is that the Basic Install guide doesn't tell the user to
install the nova-api-metadata service. But there's more to it than just
that, I believe. Two doc comments have noted that there's a routing issue
as well:

there seems to be a step left out of this guide on the controller setup
...once you create the tenant subnets you need to add the route from the
internal ips in this case route add -n 10.5.5.0/24 gw (the external router
project IP ) once i did this on the controller node it pulls the metadata
perfectly

Does this routing sound like the solution in your cases?

Anne

From what I understood, without the retrieval of the metadata from the
server, the keys are not downloaded to the VM, is this correct?

Because we can ping the IP address assigned to the VM from the network node,
and if we assign a floating IP to the VM, the public IP also responds to
 ping replys.

But we are unable to ssh into the VMs, with the error: Read from socket
 failed: Connection reset by peer

If we try to telnet into the public IP this is the result:

 controller@controller:~$ telnet x.x.x.x 22

 Trying x.x.x.x...

 Connected to x.x.x.x.

 Escape character is '^]'.

 SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1

 Protocol mismatch.

 Connection closed by foreign host.

 Questions:

In which node is the metadata service supposed to be running (compute,
 network or controller)?

Should the IP address 169.254.169.254 be reachable outside the VM?

Is there an alternative to the metadata service?

 Kind regards,

 Bruno Parreira

[Openstack] new horizon settings panel not recognized

2013-03-18 Thread Wyllys Ingersoll

I'm trying to add a new panel to the 'settings' dashboard and am having no luck
at all. I've read the docs and verified that things are placed and named
correctly, but no matter what, the error is always the same: 'Panel with slug
ec2list is not registered with Dashboard settings.

Basically, I copied the entire 'ec2' tree to 'ec2list' and renamed the relevant
classes in panels.py, the templates directory, and so on, so that its a
complete copy of the (working) ec2 panel, but with unique class names and
slugs. However, even after adding it to the list of panels in
settings/dashboard.py and restarting apache the Settings dashboard registers
and logs an error about the new panel not being registered with the settings
panel.

I know this is supposed to be auto discovered since it lives in the same tree
as the other settings panels and the permissions are all the same, etc etc.

I have no idea whats wrong, even with debug logging enabled for horizon, there
is precious little information about what's wrong or why it is failing to
register or get discovered.

Any suggestions ?

Wyllys Ingersoll

The settings dashboard.py Settings class looks like this:

class Settings(horizon.Dashboard):
name = _(Settings)
slug = settings
try:
juju_panel = getattr(settings, 'ENABLE_JUJU_PANEL')
if juju_panel == True:
panels = ('user', 'project', 'ec2', 'ec2list', 'juju')
else:
panels = ('user', 'project', 'ec2list', 'ec2')
except Exception as exc:
panels = ('user', 'project', 'ec2', 'ec2list')

default_panel = 'ec2'
nav = False

horizon.register(Settings)

I think this should solve the metadata issue, but there is one more issue,
the instances do not seem to get IP address and also it is not so clear
weather to use L2 with L3.

 Hi all,

I've got a doc bug against the Basic Install guide that I've been trying
 to understand. [1]

The first issue is that the Basic Install guide doesn't tell the user to
install the nova-api-metadata service. But there's more to it than just
that, I believe. Two doc comments have noted that there's a routing issue
 as well:

there seems to be a step left out of this guide on the controller setup
...once you create the tenant subnets you need to add the route from the
internal ips in this case route add -n 10.5.5.0/24 gw (the external
router project IP ) once i did this on the controller node it pulls the
 metadata perfectly

Does this routing sound like the solution in your cases?

 Yes. This is correct.

AFAIK in Essex, the metadata service was pointed out through iptables. So
there was a rule that DNAT the metadata service to the CC machine.

I had this metadata problem too, but I couldn't find out a proper solution.
My guess is that this problem is related to the Gateway/Router in
Folsom+Quantum installation. Or maybe in the metadata_host in the nova.conf
 file.

I hope someone could clarify this things for us.

[Openstack] TC candidacy

2013-03-18 Thread Chris Behrens

Hi all,

I'd like to announce my candidacy for a seat on the OpenStack
Technical Committee.

- General background -

I have over 15 years of experience designing and building distributed
systems. I am currently a Senior Software Developer at Rackspace,
where I have been for a 2 and a half years now. Most of my time
at Rackspace has been spent working on OpenStack as both a developer and
a technical leader. My first week at Rackspace was spent at the very first
OpenStack Design Summit in Austin where the project was announced.

Prior to working at Rackspace, I held various roles over 14 years
at Concentric Network Corporation/XO Communications including Senior
Software Architect and eventually Director of Engineering. My main
focus there was on an award winning web/email hosting platform which
we'd built to be extremely scalable and fault tolerant. While my
name is not on this patent, I was heavily involved with the development
and design that led to US6611861.

- Why am I interested? -

I have strong feelings for OpenStack and I want to help take it to
the next level. I have a lot of technical knowledge and experience
building scalable distributed systems.

During most of my past experience, I haven't had the luxury of having
access to a lot extremely fast hardware, so it's been important to
make software as performant as possible. I've also had to put lots of
effort into having 0 downtime, meaning code can be updated seamlessly
without dropping clients. I've also been one to lead host and software
security efforts so I have a lot of strong feelings in this area.

I am extremely interested in using this experience to make OpenStack
perform well, be secure, be more easily pluggable, and easy to use!

- OpenStack contributions -

As I mentioned above, I was at the very first design summit, so
I've been involved with the project from the beginning. I started
the initial work for nova-scheduler shortly after the project was
opened. I also implemented the RPC support for kombu, making sure
to properly support reconnecting and so forth which didn't work
quite so well with the carrot code. I've contributed a number of
improvements designed to make nova-api more performant. I've worked on
the filter scheduler as well as designing and implementing the
first version of the Zones replacement that we named 'Cells'.

I'm currently looking forward to restructuring our use of DB API to better
support upgrades w/ schema changes as well as committing an alternative
DB backend implementation for mysql that significantly reduces how long
we block on DB API calls compared to sqlalchemy.

- Summary -

I feel my years of experience contributing to and leading large scale
technical projects along with my knowledge of the OpenStack projects
will provide a good foundation for technical leadership.

Thanks,

- Chris

 hello folks,

we all push to improve how we interact with the OpenStack users, help
newcomers find answers to their questions and ease their path to
adoption. That's why we kickstarted the project Ask OpenStack. We're
installing an instance of Askbot under the openstack.org domain, with
the help of Askbot developers. It will have a custom skin and
authentication based on Launchpad like the rest of our services.

In the first phase it will support English and once we decide that we
like it, we will start adding other languages so users will be able to
ask questions and get answers in their own language.

While the technical part of Ask is being done, I'd like to start talking
about the organization of the content of the site, the static pages,
etc. We'll probably also need moderators and OpenStack experts that can
help answer questions on the site. If you want to help with these tasks
please join the Community mailing list
