[Openstack-doc-core] Core review stats for January

Dear core team,

Unless there are objections, I'll skip this month's openstack-manual stats
review as the stats would be heavily influenced by most people taking time
off in December. Let's continue with the reviews next month.

[Openstack-doc-core] I18n core proposal

2017-09-19 Thread Alexandra Settle
Hi team,

I know this is a little unorthodox based off our current process, but after the
PTG I was looking at our reviews/commits and the openstack-manuals repo now has
a *lot* of i18n patches that are highly relevant to Frank Kloeker (eumel8), the
new i18n PTL.

I wonder how you would all feel about proposing Frank to be a core for the
openstack-manuals team, representative of i18n?

Thoughts?

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] [openstack-docs] Core review stats

2017-08-07 Thread Alexandra Settle
Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your input regarding core reviews last week. For the month of
August we have sadly lost Olena and Olga – two of our strong contributors who
have done a lot to improve documentation. Also, sadly, I have not heard from
Tom Fifield regarding his position as OpenStack manuals core. I have emailed
him twice in two months regarding his interest in the position to receive no
response.

I assume that Tom is busy at the moment, and has other commitments that take
higher priority – which is completely understandable. As of today, I will
remove Tom from the core list, unless he reaches out to me in which case I am
more than happy to chat :)

I thank Tom, Olga, and Olena for their hard work and dedication to the team
over the last few years, and am sure our team will continue to work with them
in the wider community.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Team,

Cosidering my current loading level at work, I am sorry to say that I would
like to step down from the openstack-manuals cores. And of course I would be
happy to return back one day when I get some time to contribute to the project.
I really enjoyed being a part of the Docs team! Thanks everyone for your
support and hard work in the project!

Cheers,
Olena

Hello, team!

This is with a heavy heart I should admit that I am not able to spend much time
on reviewing at the moment due to having too much on my plate.

Thank you, Lana, Andreas, Anne, Alexandra, Brian, and all the team members!
Learning from you was a great honor for me!

I'll try to continue keeping an eye on what's happening in the team. Please, go
ahead and remove me from the core-reviewers list, for now.
Thanks,

[Openstack-doc-core] [openstack-doc-core] Core team review - July

2017-07-03 Thread Alexandra Settle
Hi core team,

Due to last month’s change to using Stackalytics for the review stats, I am
choosing to continue this trend so we have some consistency. However, I will
send out an email shortly to decide on what review stats we use in the future.

Here's the core reviewer stats for this month[1]:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:

  *   Lana Brindley
  *   Brian Moss
  *   Joseph Robinson
  *   Darren Chan
  *   Maria Zlatkova
  *   Olena Logvinova
  *   Olga Gusarenko
  *   Tom Fifield

This is a first-time appearance for most. However, I have spoken to Joseph and
Darren regarding their contributions and I believe they are choosing to step
down. Lana and Brian however intend to continue with their reviews. I will
email and discuss the potential for staying core. I will also email Maria,
Olena, Olga, and Tom about their interest on staying on. Right now, we need all
the core(s) we can get, and we truly need people to step up if they can provide
the time and expertise.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:

  * Petr Kovar (All 3 columns)
  * Bruce Benjamin (All 3 columns)
  *   Melissaml (All 3 columns)
  * Ian Choi (All 3 columns)
  * Akihiro Motoki (30 days and contributions)
  * Ildiko Vancsa (30 days and contributions)

I have reached out to Bruce and Melissa on several occasions. Melissa has
contacted me back and is interested in becoming core. I have advised her to
introduce herself on the ML, as she is not a strong presence on IRC, and read
up on the responsibilities of being a core. I still have not heard from Bruce.

I would like to promote Petr to becoming core. Petr has been around since the
Mitaka[2] release, and has recently stepped up with his reviews and commits to
help us out with our migration. He is also intending to step forward to become
our release manager for the Ocata cycle.

This month’s big thanks go to Doug Hellmann who has been tirelessly helping
orchestrate the documentation migration. Thank you, Doug!

My recommendation for April is:

Drop: Joseph Robinson, and Darren Chan
Add: Petr Kovar

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi core team,

Since the Dawn Of Time (I dunno when, sometime around July 2016) we’ve been
using the Russell Bryant statistics to keep an eye on our core reviews.
However, today I was simply unable to access the site and nobody else can
either.

Bummer, that generated results from the reviewstats tool that I want to use to
automate reports on cross-repo stats. Have you investigated any further on the
plan there?

That’s unfortunate! ☹ No, I think using stackalytics is a fine option for all
intent and purpose here.

So, this month I have adjusted and used Stackalytics, please note that this may
cause some discrepancies between previous core reviews. Here's the core
reviewer stats for this month[1]:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:
· Anne Gentle
· Olga Gusarenko

This is the second appearance for Anne, however I know she is working hard at
our theme consistencies, and has other patches in the works[2]. I am also aware
that Olga has been travelling, and has otherwise been unable to contribute as
often as possible. I will reach out to them both to ensure that there are no
other issues.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:

· Bruce Benjamin (30 and 90 days)
· Nicolas Bock (30 days)
· KATO Tomoyuki (All 3 columns)
· Mario Pranjic (30 days)
· Akihiro Motoki (30 days)
· Melissaml (30 and 90 days)
· John Davidge (90 days)
· Stephen Finucane (Contributions only)
· Jay Bryant (Contributions only)

Melissa (ma.lei) and Bruce Benjamin have been appearing in two or more columns
since the beginning of this year, and various times last year too. I reached
out to them last month to see if either of them were interested in learning how
to become core based off our recommendations, however I still have heard
nothing back. If anyone knows how I can contact them, please let me know ☺

This month’s big thanks go to Nicolas Bock and Akihiro Motoki who have both
stepped up from the Nova and Neutron teams respectively to help us out with any
reviews and issues. Thanks guys!

My recommendation for April is:

Drop: No one
Add: No one

I'm fine with this, and I'm also fine with dropping me as core since I'll keep
doing the same work either way.

Are you suggesting you would like to be removed as core? I admit, I would be
loath to lose you as one of our cores ☹ You have been so instrumental to the
project for such a long time!

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi everyone,

Before I send out my summary email to the greater mailing lists, I felt I
should reach out to you all first as the gate keepers of the documentation
project.

As we all know, we are rapidly losing key contributors and core reviewers. We
are not alone, this is happening across the board. It is making things harder,
but not impossible. Since our inception in 2010, we’ve been climbing higher and
higher trying to achieve the best documentation we could, and uphold our high
standards. This is something to be incredibly proud of.

However, we now need to take a step back and realise that the amount of work we
are attempting to maintain is now out of reach for the team size that we have.
At the moment we have 13 cores, of which none are full time contributors or
reviewers. This includes myself.

That being said! I have spent the last week at the summit talking to some of
our leaders, including Doug Hellmann (cc’d), Jonathan Bryce and Mike Perez
regarding the future of the project. Between myself and other community
members, we have been drafting plans and coming up with a new direction that
will hopefully be sustainable in the long-term.

I am interested to hear your thoughts. I want to make sure that everyone feels
that we’re headed in the right direction first and foremost. All of these
action items are documented in this WIP etherpad:
https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/doc-planning

Here’s a few action items I’d like to highlight:

1. We have a detailed outline in the above
etherpad on the action items
going forward with the Installation Guide.
a. Send email to the openstack-dev mailing list requesting input with
regards to the project-specific installation guide move:
i. Request
solutions from the remaining teams that are pushing back against in-tree
content.
   ii. Agree
upon long-term maintenance solution for Installation Guide.
2. In the Administration and Operations Guide
session we asked operators
what they wanted and how they wanted to go forward. Through a vote in the room,
operators agreed that they would like to see the Operations Guide moved out of
the openstack-manuals repo, and placed into the OpenStack
wiki for their own maintenance. We lose ownership,
but we also empower the operators to maintain their own guide.

Sounds fine, though who will do the migration? I'd also make sure it's not only
the people in the room who traveled that get a vote.

One of the things we mentioned in the room is that there would be a message to
the operations mailing list and that this would be a final decision.
Admittedly, I am trying to avoid going in circles a thousand times. If you all
think another vote would be best, I can do that.

I think I will probably do this migration. But other migrations we are going to
need help. We will do our best to appeal and use project liaisons to help ☺

3. Work on improving the config ref auto-generation files using sphinx
extensions:
a. Move away from using the flagmapping files (reduce manual labour)
b. See: https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/config-ref-spec
Yay.
4. Ensure the CLI ref is documenting the unified client (move to the OSC
repo).
Does this mean stop creating the nova CLI ref and so on? Sounds good to me.

I would say so, yes. Doug?

5. Implement the archiving solution for the Pike release.

Do we have someone assigned now?

Yes, Brian and Lana still believe they can help out, and Petra Sargent put up
her hand too.

6. After the Pike release, include a note on the Architecture Guide and
cease edits after that point in time.
Can this also go to the wiki or no? Not sure why this one stays for Pike?

It’s still being worked on in the Pike release, and because we have had a
considerable amount of work done to this guide while being in a draft state. I
do not wish to pull this one down to simply be tucked away. I think it is
beneficial has a stateless guide with the promise of no further working
material.
7. After a period of time, any documents that are not being maintained,
or groups have not taken ownership (Examples: Security, HA, and Networking
Guides), they will be moved out of the openstack-manuals repo and onto the
Legacy list.

These action

Yeah, let's make sure we're covering the repos that we expect our cores to act
in. I'm not sure which module works best here.

We have Brian appearing in stats as well - 30 and 90 days reviews, as
well as commits.

He's not listed in colum F of your spreadsheet.

You’re completely correct – thank you for pointing that out.

Let's look again at the data including Brian - and then tell me your
proposal, please,

My proposal still stands. With Brian included:

Drop: no one
Add: Chen Xing (Chason), Caoyuan, and Brian Moss

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] Core team review - February 2017

2017-02-16 Thread Joseph Robinson
For new cores, and for English Second Language contributors, one idea I¹ve
thought about before is having a section in the contributor guide that has
a short list of questions a contributor can send to the mailing list to
introduce themselves. The questions could be published in a few different
languages. As an example:

New contributors are welcome

If you are new to the OpenStack Docs team, you can contact the mailing
list any time for support. If you want to write a short introduction, you
could write to us about:

#. What interests you most about the docs project?
#. What Do you like about Documentation?
#. Etc.

Although I knew this was here, I would not say this is easy to find if you were
looking for this type of information. The contributor guide continuously grows
and grows. I wonder if it’s worth separating it into two contributor guides?
One for how to contribute, and one for conventions and guidelines? Perhaps even
as simple revisiting of the contributor guide structure might help.

I am happy to make this a goal for my first cycle as PTL. I have reached out to
the 99cloud contributors only the other day to find out what they would be
interested in working on.
But this is also a community effort, it would be nice to see people coming to
me (for Pike) and asking what they can help with. I see lots of cores floating
around without much direction (this has been me in the past, for sure).

I did some inline editing to strikethrough inaccuracies -- your columns
don't seem to match with what the 30-day 90-day links show. Maybe the tab
is mislabeled?

I'd like some discussion about how best to onboard new cores - Andreas is
onto something with an introduction to the mailing list. Do they want to be
cores? Do they know their stats are being watched for this?

She is in the list, just not in the top 12.

[Openstack-doc-core] Core team review - February 2017

2017-01-31 Thread Lana Brindley
Hi core team,

Alex and I just did the core team review together for February.

Here's the core reviewer stats for this month[1]:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:
Anne Gentle
Maria Zlatkova
Olena Logvinova
Olga Gusarenko
Shilla Saebi

This is the first appearance for all five on this list, and I think we can
safely assume that's because of various leave around this time of year for
Anne, Maria, Olena, and Olga. I understand that Shilla has been drawn to other
projects recently, so her attention has been diverted. I will reach out to
these people individually, and we can reassess next month.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:

melissaml/ma.lei (all three columns)
chenxing/chason (all three columns)
caoyuan (90 days & contributions)
cyrichardson (30 & 90 days)
bmoss (30 days only)
bruce-benjamin (30 days only)
qiaomin032 (Contributions only)
Ankur Gupta (Contributions only)
Emma Foley (Contributions only)
Thomas Goirand (Contributions only)

Melissa (ma.lei) and Chen Xing (Chason) are hitting all three columns. Caoyuan
is is hitting 90 days and Contributions. Given that it's currently Lunar New
Year, and Caoyuan is often in the top 12 on 30 days, I think we should consider
both Chason and Caoyuan. They are both regular appearances, and both have
vastly improved their quality of reviews and contributions recently. Melissa,
while she is prolific, might need a little more time and coaching to improve
her review quality, although that's open for discussion in this group. I'd also
like to call out Catherine Richardson (cyrichardson) as being a relative
newcomer who is putting a lot of effort in (although we would need to see some
quality contributions before making her core, I think).

After some discussion, our recommendation for February is:
Drop: no one
Add: Chen Xing (Chason) and Caoyuan

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Lana

I think we have to balance. Looking for example at
https://review.openstack.org/398309 . Here's my reasoning:

+1 It's a completely new change, so better than what we have before
+0 It does not build, we could fix it easily
-1 But it's soo inconsistent that bringing it up to the quality level
would requite
-2 Not taking it yet since no contact is added to third-party vendor
list. We agreed to not take these.

So, gave a -1 with links to the above - and wait.

If it were two or three small edits, I would have done it,

Andreas

I like these guidelines!

What about relaxing our requirements on the number of votes required? Is a +1

Just bumping this thread. Do people really not have an opinion here?

I'll give it another couple of days then open it up to the docs list for more

[Openstack-doc-core] Stepping down from openstack-manuals core

2016-10-18 Thread Steve Gordon
Hi folks,

I think the time has come for me to step down from the core team. I still
intend to review changes related to my subject areas of interest going forward
but in addition to my review velocity slowing I am increasingly finding I do
not have the full context required to wield a +2/-2 with the right level of
consideration.

Thanks all,

Steve

I've communicated with both Atsushi-san and Gauvain, and made the change. This

Thank you for commenting.

#1 x-openstack-request-id
May be you can guess by my bug reporting.
I am now looking into trouble shooting method for cross-module one.
   => Currently Annoying me.
Some ID's are different on modules, I hope this should be unified
(=> See Ref for example, this issue is not completed yet)
Like x-openstack-request-id etc from server logging and CLI response.

This is purposes for shorten the trouble shooting time.
I would like to reflect the operation guide for this issue.

  Ref. PS

#2 typo related issue (now in under investigation)

I would like to add spell checking functions by using sphenixcontrib.spell
By seeing Chanier (one of Machine Learning OSS), I found it can spell checking

https://github.com/pfnet/chainer/blob/master/docs/source/spelling_wordlist.txt

Of course, some modules in openstack have already included this module. But
it does not have wordlist.

For the record, I never add or drop anyone without first having that discussion
with them.

Also: the way this process is designed is so that people can come and go from
the core list relatively quickly, so there's nothing stopping anyone from
making core several times.

Pretty sure Gauvain communicated a while ago he wasn't going to be able to
work on upstream very much, but have we heard from Atsushi at all? I'd like
to hear from him before moving him off of core. He may be our first loss
from distributing API work across projects.

I agree with these suggestions - we should discuss with them beforehand.

Also, Akhiro Motoki has been doing an awesome job. Probably not suitable
for this round, but would keep an eye out for next round.

[Openstack-doc-core] Core team Review - September 2016

2016-09-01 Thread Lana Brindley
Hi core team,

Here's the core reviewer stats for this month[1]:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:
Atsushi SAKAI
Gauvain Pocentek

This is the second appearance in a row for both Atsushi-san and Gauvain.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:
Chen Xing (90 days only)
Mahesh (Contributions only)
Chen Qiaomin (Contributions only)
Cao Yuan (30 & 90 days only)
wangqi (30 days only)[2]
malei (30 days only)[3]
Akihiro Motoki
Stephen Finucane

No one in this list is hitting all three columns, however if you feel strongly
that any of them should be considered for core, now would be the time to yell
about it.

My recommendation for July is:
Drop: Atsushi-san, and Gauvain
Add: no one

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Lana

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] Extra ATCs for Newton

2016-08-24 Thread Anne Gentle
It's your judgement call - and certainly Cathy and Neela also are in this group.

My personal judgement call is that the contributions are not as significant as
what we have used for extra-ATC status in the past.

My sense it that the communication would be an explanation that we found they
were marked as a co-author on a docs patch, and while you did not submit their
name for extra-ATC status for docs specifically, we appreciate their help. It's
an outreach mechanism, rather than for recognition or reward.

Thanks,
Anne

In the past, docs have given extra ATC status to people who participated in
docs sprints, as an example. If you know of anyone, let's shop the idea on this

FWIW - Co-Authored-By is not included in ATC unless requested by the

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] Extra ATCs for Newton

2016-08-14 Thread Lana Brindley
I'm inclined to agree with you, Anne. My main concern is that, while I think
what Hugh does is valuable, I'm unsure how to give him the recognition
(especially in light of the fact that the "Active User Contributor" status is
still non-existent).

I'll give this thread another 24 hours or so, then report back to Hugh with the
findings. At this stage, I think there's not enough support to grant him extra
ATC status, so if you disagree now would be the time to yell about it.

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] Extra ATCs for Newton

2016-08-12 Thread Anne Gentle
It's a great newsletter; I highly recommend subscribing.

I write blog posts for my TC work and so on, yet I've never thought of it
as a technical patch. So I lean towards not granting extra-ATC status for
newsletter/summary work in particular. It's not documentation in the sense
of what this team produces.

There should be another way to recognize the efforts, and I could see it
fitting into one of the "Active User Contributor" recognition efforts. In
case you haven't heard of it, they are working on a status similar to ATC.
See
http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/user-committee/2016-June/001067.html
for ideas on what they're adding there. Timing might be late for Hugh but
this is the category in my mind.

Following on from this: some of you may know Hugh Blemings, who writes the
'Last Week on OpenStack-Dev' newsletter
(http://hugh.blemings.id.au/openstack/lwood/).

I believe Hugh provides a valuable service for the community, and I think this
is probably worthy of a vote (which is the main benefit of ATC status after
Barcelona). Do you think we should offer him extra-ATC status in docs because
of his work with making sense of the dev list?

Interested in your thoughts.

I know Olga has just returned from vacation, so even though this is her second
appearance, we can discount her.

This is the first appearance for the others, so no action required here, I
believe.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:
Chen Xing (30 & 90 days only)
Mahesh (90 days only)
Chen Qiaomin (Contributions only)

No one in this list is hitting all three columns, however if you feel strongly
that any of them should be considered for core, now would be the time to yell
about it.

My recommendation for July is:
Drop: no one
Add: no one

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Lana

[Openstack-doc-core] Core Team Review - August 2016

2016-08-01 Thread Lana Brindley
Hi core team,

I was all set to do the core team review today, but it seems the Russell Bryant
stats have gone offline. I'll try again tomorrow, and if they're still down
then I'll use gerrit stats instead.

How about adding Chen as an intern for group mentoring.

I have heard back from Chen, he is interested in working on the HA Guide. Is
anyone willing to fulfill a mentor-type role for this? I think it's great to
have people interested in improving this guide, so we should definitely

is taking some time to consider the offer. He will get back to me before

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] Core Team Review - July 2016

2016-07-04 Thread Lana Brindley
OK, that changes things slightly:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:
Diane Fleming
Olga Gusarenko

Current non-cores appearing in stats:
Joseph Robinson (30 & 90 day reviews only)
Chen Xing (30 & 90 day reviews & contributions)
Cao Yuan (30 day reviews only)
Mahesh (90 day reviews only)

This definitely puts Chen on the Add list, so my official recommendation
becomes:

Drop: no one
Add: Chen Xing

Given the rest of the conversation, I'm happy to drop Diane and add Joseph if
we have enough support from this group.

So: yay or nay?

Anne makes a good point about Joseph, I’d like to see him on the core list
sometime - especially seeing as he has core experience on the docs-specs
team.

Perhaps reach out to Joseph and see if he feels up to the task/wants to be
core? :)

Yeah, if she's on next month's list as well, then I think we can discuss it
then.

[Openstack-doc-core] Core Team Review - July 2016

2016-07-03 Thread Lana Brindley
Hi core team,

Here's the core reviewer stats for this month[1]:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:
Anne Gentle
Diane Fleming
Olga Gusarenko

This is highly irregular, and I suspect we can probably blame a combination of
work being done on the api-site that isn't accurately tracked through gerrit
and launchpad, and the northern hemisphere summer holidays.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:
Joseph Robinson (30 & 90 day reviews only)
Chen Xing (30 & 90 day reviews only)
Cao Yuan (30 day reviews only)
Mahesh (90 day reviews only)
Brian Moss (Contributions only)
Chen Qiaomin (Contributions only)

No one in this list is hitting all three columns, however if you feel strongly
that any of them should be considered for core, now would be the time to yell
about it.

My recommendation for July is:
Drop: no one
Add: no one

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Lana

 Hi everyone,

The training guides and labs core teams had become out of date, so working
with the training teams, along with the docs core team, we've decided to
 adjust them as follows:

 1. Speciality team leads are core in their own repos
 2. Docs core are an 'included group' in both repos

This is intended to stop the core teams for these groups drifting out of
 date too quickly.

Note that it is expected that docs cores will not be the primary
reviewers/mergers for training repos, but are there as backup in case
extra eyes are needed. That responsibility will continue to lie with the
training teams themselves, as they know the codebase the best.

You can see the updated core team lists here:

 Lana

It would be great to have docs team as fallback but I don't expect me to
review either of these with the exception of infrastructure changes -
and for some of these it would have been helpful in the past ;)

Looking at stackalytics reviews for Mitaka and Newton, I agree to remove
everybody except Matjaz. What about adding Ian Y. Choi?
