[openthinclient-user] openthinclient OS v2.0 - early announcement

2013-09-06 Thread Steffen Hönig
Hello,

my name is Steffen Hönig, and I'm developer and project manager with
openthinclient.com.

We are in the midst of a transition to a new, Debian based userland.

While our customers feedback suggests the graphical Java component - the
so-called openthinclient Manager helps people ease their
administrational everyday life, the aging client software
(openthinclient OS) needs an overhaul to say the least.

Hence we are looking for more than updating a bunch of packages, kernels
and so on.

*We ask you to be part of the new release from the very beginning!*
We look for people who'd like to volunteer for openthinclient OS on
several levels. It's kind of an experiment for us too, but if you are a(n)

  *

administrator, hunting for bugs as soon there is an installer
packages available

  *

developer, feeling at home with *bash*or *python*scripts

  *

technically interested user

*Then we'd like to invite you being a part of the new openthinclient OS
project.*

To take part you might choose one of the following actions:

  *

upload proposals for stuff that should be implemented

  *

take part as a developer sending in patches or even ready-made packages

  *

*write*articles on our*wiki *(soon tba!)*
*

  *

general community: work as a moderator on the mailing list

Our first goals in the course of the next few weeks is to rebuild the
openthinclient OS environment with the help of the LINBO building
environment build by Klaus Knopper (knopper.net). Next to a Debian 7
(Wheezy) core the userland will be made of a custom kernel/initrd
package and several python scripts to boot the clients via PXE and mount
the userland images via NFS. The main goal will be to bring as much of
functionality of our release back to be at least on par with the current
feature set as possible.

We'd be eager for people who'd like to be *early-bird testers* or
*scripters*, who are familiar with bash and squashfs alike images to
send us ideas, (or even better) code to improve the development
environment.

For that we will upload our code as soon as something is in the state of
being bootable.

So here is what you can do in a brief summary:

  *

subscribe to our mailinglists and send in ideas no matter what they
target at

  *

help to improve our bilingual wiki pages (address soon to be announced)

  *

write code!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
