Mobile Camp Oz call for Presenters
Note: This is a cross-post from the OzSilverlight/OzDotNet mailing lists. Whilst I know it's less relevant to Azure I thought I'd share it on this list because I'm particularly interested in having someone present on consuming the cloud from a mobile application. If anyone on this list has experiences connecting mobile applications to Azure services we'd love you to submit a session (or 2). Hi everyone, Over the last couple of weeks we've been in the early planning phase for Mobile Camp Oz, a camp in the same format as Code Camp Oz (http://codecampoz.com/) in late April. Running over the ANZAC long weekend (23-24th April) the camp will cover topics on both designing and developing for mobile devices across the three main smartphone platforms, iOS, Android and of course Windows Phone 7. Here's a brief summary of the event so that you can pencil it into your calendar (see attached for an appointment to add to your calendar!): Dates: April 23rd/24th (ANZAC Long Weekend) Venue: Charles Sturt University (Bathurst Campus) Cost: FREE Now the important bit - we're looking for presenters for the event. If you've been designing or developing for any of the mobile platforms and you think you have a unique angle, we'd love to hear from you. The call for presenters is now open and I'd encourage you to put forward your session. We'll be reviewing the sessions as they're submitted with the intent of preparing an agenda for the event by mid-February. This means that if you're interested in presenting we need your session abstract as soon as possible. Call for Presenters: http://mobilecampoz.com/Presenters.aspx (deadline - 1st February) If you can't think what you'd like to present on, here is a list of potential topics. If you already have an idea but it's not in this list, please submit the idea anyhow! * Performance * Security * MCommerce/Mobile Payments * Advertising * Economics of Apps * Cross Platform * Mobile Web * HTML5 on a device * Location * Device Features * Data * Connectivity * Designing for Mobile We're also taking registrations at this point (http://mobilecampoz2011.eventbrite.com/?ref=ebtn). Numbers will be limited so it may be worth getting in early. RE: Upgrading from Azure CTP
I want to reiterate this warning. If you don't plan to upgrade your CTP account and don't want them, make sure you remove them prior to signing up for a subscription. When you sign up for a subscription if you use the same Live ID you will start accruing charges immediately on any CTP projects you still have lying around. Important to note that if you're using the same Windows Live ID any active CTP projects will move over and start accruing charges so please consider the options below before you complete your upgrade. Greg Willis Initial Upgrade Invitation on April 9, 2010 SUBJECT: IMPORTANT NOTICE - Upgrade your Windows Azure platform CTP account Greetings from the Windows Azure Platform Team! We are pleased to announce that starting today, Community Technology Preview (CTP) participants of the Windows(r) Azure(tm) platform from the following additional countries can upgrade to a paid and fully SLA-supportedhttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/sla/ commercial subscription: * Australia * Brazil * Chile * Colombia * Costa Rica * Cyprus * Czech Republic * Greece * Hong Kong * Hungary * Israel * Luxemburg * Malaysia * Mexico * Peru * Philippines * Poland * Puerto Rico * Romania * Trinidad and Tobago You will have until May 9, 2010 to upgrade your CTP account(s). To upgrade your CTP account(s), you will need to go to our offers pagehttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/offers/ and select the offer of your choice. When you purchase the selected offer, you will need to sign in with the same Windows Live ID as that associated with your CTP account(s) and enter this same Windows Live ID as the Service Administrator when prompted to do so. Your CTP account(s) automatically will be associated with the first offer you purchase with that Windows Live ID. If you upgrade your CTP account(s), you will begin to accrue usage charges as of the time you upgrade. Please note that Windows Azure hosted services incur compute charges for each hour that your application is deployed. This includes both stopped and running applications for both the staging and production slots. Please delete any applications you are not running if you desire to avoid charges. If you wish to purchase a new commercial subscription but NOT upgrade your existing CTP projects, please use a different Windows Live ID than your CTP account(s) when ordering or remove all of your applications and data associated with your CTP account(s) prior to sign up. If you elect not to upgrade, on May 10, 2010 your CTP account(s) will be disabled and any Windows Azure Storage will be made read-only. SQL Azure CTP accounts will be able to keep using their existing databases but will no longer be able to create new databases. On June 10, 2010, any non-upgraded CTP accounts will be fully de-provisioned. It is important to export your data if you do not plan to upgrade to a commercial subscription prior to June 10, 2010. If you have any questions regarding the upgrade process, please contact customer supporthttps://mocp.microsoftonline.com/Site/Support.aspx. If you are participating in the Microsoft Codename Dallas CTP, your service remains in CTP and is not impacted by this announcement. Azure Pricing
As a follow up on my previous show of hands, I was wondering how many people had taken a close look at the pricing model for Windows Azure. Does anyone have any opinions on the proposed pricing? Does it suit the way you would charge for your application/service? One of the questions that come to mind for me is the choice between Windows Azure table storage and SQL Azure. Has anyone done the pricing comparison and prepared to provide a commentary on their findings? During TechEd I spent a bit of time investigating Azure pricing and have a rough calculation spreadsheet I put together. I'd be happy to share this with anyone who'd be prepared to provide feedback on it. RE: Azure Pricing
Ah yes, the .NET Services message/bandwidth charge can be quite high. You need to make sure that if you are transferring large quantities of data you ensure you establish a direct connection (using the Hybrid mode of the relay bindings), rather than piping stuff through the service bus. Early adopters will likely be project builders with small apps, and some of these prices will drive these types of applications away. At the enterprise level though, I think these are okay. I'd still suggest making them cheaper to entice take-up; developers (for the most part) are still going to have to sell the benefits to their business in order to get projects off the ground and businesses are loathe to take risks with pricing models that are new to them (especially since the GFC). My personal gripe is the .Net Services messages charge - that seems pretty steep to me. Carl. RE: [OT?] Mesh
Stephen My understanding is that the consumer product know as Live Mesh will not be retired. However, the developer/application platform Live Framework has been withdrawn in order to be surfaced again at a later date, presumably with closer integration into the whole Windows Azure platform. Note that .NET Services is not related in functionality to Live Framework, although we may see that some of the services that were part of Live FX surface in components of .NET Services. Specifically I'm guessing that the authentication mechanism will probably be aligned with the Access control service that is part of .NET Services. I use Mesh a fair bit and was wondering if anyone can point me to some concrete info, or knows first hand? Will there be a replacement service or will Mesh be moved to the new services? seems odd that they would drop something given the amount of hype when it was first put out in beta. thx, Stephen ___ ozazure mailing list ozazure@lists.codify.com http://prdlxvm0001.codify.net/mailman/listinfo/ozazure
