The cloud to me is utility computing. Like they say everyone used to generate their own power to run their factories. Once utility power came along they had to use it to remain competitive. Those that didn't trust their businesses on the reliability of the power stations found it very difficult. Running your own substation is also costly, you need staff, maintenance, upgrades etc. Now with utility power you can simply dial up as much as you need.
The parallels are there with cloud computing, utility / economies of scale mean a) they can offer it cheaper than you can do it yourself and b) you can scale up based on demand and c) you don't have to keep "engineers" around to maintain the system... when something dies, a buzzer goes off half way around the world - you don't need to worry about it.
