If it is just a single mailbox you could do this. https://thedigitalnonprofit.com/use-gmail-own-domain-free/ 1. Setup a standard gmail account yourdom...@gmail.com. 2. Configure email forwarding with your register or use CloudFlare email forwarding to forward all emails to yourdom...@gmail.com 3. Setup Gmail to "Send As" n...@yourdomain.com.au using your standard Gmail credentials. Regards Adrian Halid On Tue, 19 Apr 2022 at 16:08, Tom Rutter wrote: > Thanks for the info Adrian. There seems to be mixed messages about the no cost option. I think google stated no custom domains. But users have been chatting with google support and they have said/hinted custom domains would be available. Re: [OT] Google Workspace free edition ending soon
Hi Tom, I also have the GSuite Legacy and am trying to figure out where I move it. It depends on what your needs are. Do you use catch-all or aliases? How many email accounts do you have? How many domain names do you have? The main options I have been looking at are Microsoft 365 Family $127 per year 6 people with one custom domain. Plus you get the Microsoft Office suite, 1TB OneDrive. iCloud+ You can use up to five custom domains, with up to three personalised email addresses per domain. This might be a good option if you are already paying for iCloud+ storage as you get this included. 50 GB: $1.49 per month 200 GB: $4.49 per month 2 TB: $14.99 per month https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT212514 You can also go down the Microsoft Exchange online route which gives you 900 domains and 400 alias. $5.50 per user per month https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/microsoft-365/exchange/compare-microsoft-exchange-online-plans I have been following this Reddit group https://www.reddit.com/r/gsuitelegacymigration for information and ideas. The main suggestion for migrating emails is to just use IMAP, your mail client (Outlook/Thunderbird/etc) and copy from one service to another. I believe Exchange Online has migration tools that can do it for you if you go for that service. I have also been looking at https://imapsync.lamiral.info/ I am still waiting to see what options Google comes out with as some people believe google will provide a low cost "Family" style option like Microsoft. I have also been considering getting a Microsoft Action Pack subscription which gives me 5 Office 365 E3 licenses and Azure credits. A lot more costly but I have been thinking about trying out personal projects in the Azure stack. RE: [OT] WebApi not working
Hi Greg, I ran into the same problem before. Windows Server 2008 R2 is all ready for MVC/REST API. But Windows server 2008 Standard is not. There are a few things to do to get it to work. I can’t remember exactly what I had to do. But have a google for Windows 2008 Standard MVC https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Windows+2008+standard+MVC=1C1GGRV_enAU752AU754=Windows+2008+standard+MVC=chrome..69i57j69i60.8935j0j7=chrome=UTF-8 There is the Quick Fix for extensionless URL’s https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11342 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/980368/a-update-is-available-that-enables-certain-iis-7-0-or-iis-7-5-handlers https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12495346/asp-net-4-5-mvc-4-not-working-on-windows-server-2008-iis-7# Also you have to make sure you are using the integrated pipeline mode for the application pool. If you were to start a new Enterprise Web Project which has the potential to be continually developed and enhanced over 5 to 10 years what web technology frameworks would you choose? I also don’t mean to suggest we don’t use and play with the new stuff either but the level of acceptance, particularly from people way smarter than me, is puzzling. It is real easy to be critical (like I have here…. ) so providing feedback on progress is pretty important. Doesn’t always work as momentum can carry it through (I am looking at you Angular2). My rather rambling and opinionated point is that on a few engagements, I have recommended to not use the shiny new stuff, in favour of older but well known, and easier to maintain frameworks (after assessment of timeframes, people’s skillsets etc). Not using the latest in those cases has proven to be a boon, rather than an impediment. Sure it is lower on the coolness scale, and could be replaced with newer stuff later (obviously with a little rework) but it is working very well. It kind of suggests we perhaps invented part of the problem to solve in the first place. So I think play and assess the new stuff (like Greg has), but don’t blindly accept. Then engage and provide some form of influence or feedback so we don’t re-introduce the same mess in another 10 years. - Glav From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com <mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com> [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Scott Barnes Sent: Sunday, 27 November 2016 9:40 PM To: ozDotNet <ozdotnet@ozdotnet.com <mailto:ozdotnet@ozdotnet.com> > Subject: Re: [OT] node.js and express So Paul, you're basically saying "The standard we walk past, is the standard we accept" hehe :) --- Regards, Scott Barnes http://www.riagenic.com On Sun, Nov 27, 2016 at 8:31 PM, Paul Glavich <subscripti...@theglavs.com <mailto:subscripti...@theglavs.com> > wrote: Ahh the recurring thread about how immature the JS/Web dev community is and how hard it is to do anything “right”. People want to be able to access everything they need no matter where they are. And thick clients are simply not transportable. These days I use OutSystems to generate my line of business reactive web-applications quickly and easily (it's very reminiscent of old style RAD tools - with similar limitations). However it doesn't come cheap (I'm lucky in that my company pays for it), and isn't perfect. But never-the-less, we re-developed an old thick client application (which has continually grown to mammoth proportions over a decade), and re-developed it (including new features) as a reactive mobile-friendly web-application in under 8 months. I find it's ideal for data driven line-of-business applications; but it's not something I'd reach for, for complex process heavy operations where every millisecond counts (although you can call .Net assemblies natively, or consume REST web-services that you can build yourself to get around this). I still keep my eyes somewhat on traditional web-development (OutSystems is not a heavy solution). I wanted to add a word of caution with regard to the Surface Display Dock. I purchased the Surface Display Dock in the hopes of running 2 x 2560x1440 monitors via the two mini display ports in the dock. Something the device should well be able to do. I am using a Surface Pro 4 with the display dock and have applied all the latest firmware and driver updates I can find. I am using two mini-DP to full size DP cables so no adapters. At the moment I am struggling to get reliable connection to just ONE of my BENQ BL2420PT monitors. Given up on two for now. After trying every possible solution I can think of and find online, this is what I end up doing just to get it displaying on one of the external monitors about 90% of the time. 1. Unplug the power from the display dock. (I also remove the connection from the Surface but I'm not sure I need to) 2. Wait for 45-60seconds. 3. Plug the power cables back into the dock and connect the dock to the SP4 4. Turn the SP4 on. This is the ONLY way I can get the device to display on my external monitor and even then it's only 90% of the time. I've also changed the power settings to ensure the SP4 doesn't go into sleep mode as it never comes back with the external display working. I have also used the same Display Dock and SP4 in another office using a DELL monitor at 1920x1080 and it seems to work far more reliably. Can't easily confirm if the issue is more related to the BENQ monitor or the Display Dock at this time. It really shouldn't be too much to expect these things just work surely. RE: TraceSource and config
Trace switches can be used in determine what to output to the log. So in my libraries I will log different things at different levels. Error, Warning, Info. Then when I need to debug something I can decide if I am just interested in one of these or all of these. You can also have logic in your code based on trace switches. if (traceDetails.Switch.Level == SourceLevels.Information){ //do this } This can be useful if you are calling another web service and want to indicate to the web service to pass back debug information. For example in my WebService Methods I can have a parameter called DebugLevel. If tracing has been enabled then I pass the tracelevel value to the web service and have the web service return more debug information. How on earth did the Microsoft developers get the apps to run on all those platforms?! It's inconceivable that there could be much of a common code base, so it must be a mind-boggling technical and logistical challenge to support all those platforms. Anyone have inside info on this? Note that the Office 365 installer doesn't let you chose components, so I have Outlook, OneNote and Publisher despite that fact that I will never ever open them. Also note that Visio is not included. I was forced to uninstall my Visio 2013 32-bit version before installing Office 365, and now I would be forced to pay $21/month to add it to the suite (which is twice the cost of the suite). I'll have to install Visio 2013 in a VM. Greg

Over the last week or more since I expressed my dismay, I've been reading more and more about the zoo of frameworks that decorate JavaScript and attempt to hoist it up into the world of real languages. It's getting so stupid that the AngularJS seems to have decided to completely rewrite it for v2 using TypeScript, and someone got upset and split off to make Aurelia because it was more pure, but apparently they're friends again now, I think. It's worse than a zoo, it's like a steaming compost bin. I got all excited about TypeScript last weekend and I spent an afternoon reading about it and fiddling to see if it has promise. So I create a new HTML project and I get one small source file that shows the time. The sample code is raw JS from the 90s and I have to go looking for a way to integrate jQuery and/or AngularJS into the project. So dozens of opinionated pages later I discover I just about have to reinvent the steam engine to try an integrate them, and there are literally dozens of experts all claiming they know they best way to do it, with all sorts of cryptic pseudo-functional coding tricks. I simply want to know how to structure a large TS project, but there is no reliable guidance anywhere, it's just a dogs breakfast. This is what happens when a script becomes accidentally promoted to become the new fangled language to drive LOB apps in the web without proper planning by industry experts and academics. There are no conventions for code or project structure, references, dependencies, building, testing ... anything! ... it's just a bottomless kludge of more tools made in JavaScript to try and make itself look and behave sensibly. I am now overwhelmed by despair at what damage JavaScript has done to software development in the 21st century. I know there are lots of younger developers out there who shrug and think what's so bad, it's working, but I think they're just used to suffering and take it for granted. The 2 main reasons I use unRaid are the ease of decommissioning and the ease of upgrading my hardware (although I haven't needed to do either). unRaid is not a version of Raid. Instead it constantly maintains a parity drive so that any drive that goes down can be kept alive virtually. The actual drives that store the data are not striped, or modified in any other way, so could be pulled out of the server and stuck into another machine seamlessly. Upgrading the capacity is also seamless. Swapping a drive: Say I have 2 x 2TB data drives and 1x2TB parity drive. I can swap the 2TB parity drive for a 3TB drive without bringing the system down (the parity gets rebuilt in situ). I can then replace one of the 2TB data drives with a 3TB drive (again without bringing the system down). Easy. Plus, I can have any combination of drive sizes, as long as the parity drive is the biggest. Adding a new drive is even easier - just add it. For a freshly prepared drive, it just goes straight in without needing to rebuild the parity. Hi Ian, Best to double check what disks your HP Proliant Microserver N36L supports. I have a N40L which uses the same storage controller as the N36L as per the spec sheet below. http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/getpdf.aspx/c04111079.pdf?ver=17 It says a maximum of 8TB = (4 x 2 TB). I just recently purchased the HP Proliant Gen8 Microserver as it was a great price. Hopefully delivered next week. Now I too am trying to figure out how to upgrade and repurpose my N40L. Currently it is running vmware esxi 5.1 with a windows 8.1 and Ubunut guest OS. I am not using RAID either at the moment. I am thinking of updating the disks 4 x 2TB and configuring it to use the inbuilt hardware RAID1 to get 4 GB of storage mirrored. Then either run FreeNAS or esxi with FreeNAS as a guest. Or maybe retire the N40L and just run everything on the new Gen8. I have used TeamViewer to download to it remotely (I can use my personal data quotas at cheaper rates than when at a remote location, in Australia or overseas – and it’s Windows, necessary for the special-purpose downloader). I don’t have a great number of complaints about WHS 2011. I bought DriveBender, when initially released (Oct 2011), and never got to install any of the many versions (v1310 was the last I downloaded), as it seemed that it was never out of beta. Can you comment on its effectiveness? I have just had a look at Division-M’s support page and see that it supports Windows 8 and Server 2012, so I have downloaded v2380 and will contact the developers/publishers if I need to ‘renew’ my license. With my setup, I’ve used a regular Windows Server 2012 R2 and added the WSE role – that allows you to join the server to my existing AD domain, and gives you all the related goodness (e.g. centralised account management etc.) I then have a CrashPlan subscription that allows me to backup critical information offsite (Crashplan also supports backups locally, and to friends you might have). I use DriveBender to give me folder-by-folder RAID1, rather than relying on hardware RAID. There’s various other software RAID systems out there you could also use. I like WSE because it’s a regular Windows Server under the covers, so you can do a lot more than just serve files (run whatever services you want, it can act as a reverse proxy etc.). However if your primary use case is to serve/backup files, then a NAS is probably going to be simpler to manage and consume less power. All I get is 404. I'm guessing now that it's not the config, but some environmental or IIS setting. I'm just wondering if anyone else has stumbled over this problem and can advise. Many people suggest that WCF service code will work on both http and https so long as you have a pair of config bindings. I think my config is prepared for this, but I hope someone can confirm it will work that way. Greg K

RE: Protecting video content
IIS streaming media server Are you hosting the video or using a 3rd party such as Vimeo or You Tube? I have used Vimeo Pro membership $199 per year and they allow you to embed video and restrict it by domain names so that they are not visible on vimeo.com or any other site that tries to view/embed it. I have then created web pages that restrict access to content based on the Vimeo video id. A user will login with forms based authentication and we restrict access to the video content they are allowed to view. Some of the video is publicly available, some of it is subscriber content. There are different levels of subscriber (so higher levels get more video than lower levels). We want to be able to protect the subscriber content somehow. All video is going to be linked to via a HTML 5 video / tag. We want to stop subscribers from copying the URL of subscriber content from the page source and sharing it around over the internet. I thought about writing a HTTP Handler that intercepts the requests and deals with authorisation. This would take the form of something like http://mysite.com/getvideo.ashx?ID=xx;. If they're not authenticated and authorised it would bounce them to some sort of not authorised page. This would stop link theft, but I am not sure if we'd get the benefits of the streaming media server by doing this. Would love to hear your thoughts if you've been down this road. Cheers Grant

Hi list! This is a bit of an odd request, but I'm yet to find the right incantation of search phrases that will yield results from the Internet - hopefully you can help! There is a certain subset of computer users who, when reading text on the screen, compulsively click or highlight text that they are reading on the screen (I am one of them!). I didn't even know I was doing it until someone pointed it out to me whilst I was pairing with them a few years ago. One of our in-house products recently shipped a new milestone version internally with a new feature when viewing issues that allows you to instantly edit the content of the fields on the screen simply by simply clicking on them (turning the plain HTML into editable form controls on-the-fly). This is pretty neat, but as a serial text-clicker, this feature is downright infuriating. I was happy to put this down as either a little personality quirk of my own, or merely some indication that I may be insane, but a quick straw poll of those nearby finds at least 3 other people who have the same behaviour, or some variant (one guy says he clicks on browser windows a lot as a muscle-memory thing to ensure the right browser window has focus). I'm trying to describe to the other team why this new feature sucks for some people, but I have no idea if that some people is one in ten users, or one in one million. Have searched a bit online for information about this, but I don't really know what to search for. Does this user behaviour have a name? Are there other people like me out there (hello? hello?)? Any literature around on whether or not its a great idea to bind functionality to an innocuous user-action like text-selection or clicking in an apparently non-clickable area? Cheers! Joe.
RE: COM problems in Visual Studio 2010
I am not sure if this is your issue but I have had issues with Com Interop when upgrading from VS2005 to VS2010. It relates to Aximp not working via the IDE. We got around it by performing the Aximp via cmd line. https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/557722/errors-utilizing-activex-controls-in-vs-2010 We have a VB6 based ActiveX Control compiled into a .ocx file that we have used in one of our .net projects under Visual Studio 2008. However with Visual Studio 2010 we found that when we try to create an instance of our object on our control surface by double clicking it from the tool box Visual Studio 2010 throws an error indicating that it doesn't think the ActiveX was registered correctly. We dug into this a bit and I narrowed it down to 2 public interfaces in the ActiveX control that Visual Studio 2010 doesn't like. Oddly the behavior is different if the target framework is set to 4.0 or if it's set to an earlier framework. When your target framework is .net 4.0, if you have a public interface that exposes EITHER the VBRUN.EventInfo class -OR- exposes the VBA.CallType class you will have this problem. When your target framework is set to .net 3.5, if you have a public interface that exposes BOTH the VBRUN.EventInfo class -AND- exposes the VBA.CallType class you will have this problem. Curiously if one or the other is exposed (but not both) the problem doesn't occur. It is very important that we get this fixed if we are to migrate our project, used in 30,000 workstations around the globe, updated to Visual Studio 2010. It is supposed to get fixed in .NET 4.0 SP1 if resources and scheduling allows them Regards Adrian Halid Senior Analyst/Programmer IT Vision Australia Pty Ltd (ABN: 34 309 336 904) PO Box 881, Canning Bridge WA 6153 Level 3, Kirin Centre, 15 Ogilvie Road, Applecross, WA, 6153 P: (08) 9315 7000 F: (08) 9315 7088 E: adrian.ha...@itvision.com.aumailto:adrian.ha...@itvision.com.auW: http://www.itvision.com.auhttp://www.itvision.com.au/ ___ NOTICE : This e-mail and any attachments are intended for the addressee(s) only and may contain confidential or privileged material. RE: [OT] Free Forum Software and Mailing list software.
Sorry - just to reiterate in case it was lost in the thread: You can run all of the above on Windows fine (including Apache if you assist - but not sure why you'd choose that over IIS7). Yeah was just reading about that on http://www.microsoft.com/web/. It’s been a while since I been working with web servers. I now need to look at what is involved in upgrading our server 2003 web server IIS 6.0 to IIS7 and how it could affect some of our existing apps. Or maybe see if we can upgrade to server 2008. RE: [OT] Free Forum Software and Mailing list software.
The main reason is that I would need to manage another server. I would need a Unix box with Apache, PHP and MySQL on it. I guess I could put PHP and MySQL on windows but I have never done that before. I wasn’t sure if that was really a good idea. I thought there may be a lot of configuration and workarounds I would need to do. We also currently have website in ASP http://www.mysite.com.au and I just wanted to add forum to the url http://www.mysite.com.au/forum If I have my website and forum running under two different types of web servers how can I use the same domain on both web servers? I have setup YAF.NEThttp://YAF.NET (Yet Another Forum) as that seems the most popular on search results but have not found it as complete or crisp as PHPBB. There seems to be a lot more configuration options for PHPBB and feels more natural to use and what I am used to.
