Unknown errors with people and groups

2009-04-16 Thread Paul Noone
Hi guys,

I've recently migrated some sites to a new collection and everything seems to
have worked with the exception of people and group management on one site.

Whenever I try to access the Site Permissions (/_layouts/user.aspx) or Group
Settings (_layouts/editgrp.aspx) page for this site I receive the Unknown error
screen. I receive the same error when trying to apply changes in the Set Up
Groups for this Site page (_layouts/permsetup.aspx).

Has anyone experienced this or have any idea what's going on?

Kind regards,

Helpful those 'Unknown Error' messages, aren't they? J

Only one site of the multiple sites you mention has this problem? Any
differences between the problem site and the others you can think of?
How did you migrate the sites?

Only difference is this one and it's children don't have publishing
enabled. Also, these were migrated using the Content Deployment Wizard
and I reparented the parent site after import. Maybe it'll be easier to
just try again. :\

Anything in the 12 hive or Windows event logs? If you can't find
anything perhaps hit the page again, get the unknown error and check the
logs at that point, then it should be at the top of the page.

Have you tried logging into a SPUser rather than your logon and see if the

Thanks all I got it sorted.

The cause of the “Unknown error” was that the site owner and visitor groups

RE: Unknown errors with people and groups [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Hmm, I've had a similar problem when I created a blank site using the
stsadm command.

Thanks all I got it sorted.

The cause of the Unknown error was that the site owner and visitor
groups didn't exist in the destination collection, which prevented me
accessing the pages. Nice!

Have you tried logging into a SPUser rather than your logon and see if
the errors occur, sounds like permission specific errors, jump on
another Admin logon and see if you can browse to those pages.

Hi mate

What made my spider senses single here is the fact that you said
reparented after import. Although I did not experience your error, I
had weird side effects in doing this too and the legendary Gary lapointe
saved my butt :-)

d-has-good-music-taste-too/

I may be miles off, but that word reparenting and publishing feature
makes me think it smells similar..

Hi guys,

I've recently migrated some sites to a new collection and
everything seems to have worked with the exception of people and group
management on one site.

Whenever I try to access the Site Permissions
(/_layouts/user.aspx) or Group Settings (_layouts/editgrp.aspx) page for
this site I receive the Unknown error screen. I receive the same error
when trying to apply changes in the Set Up Groups for this Site page
(_layouts/permsetup.aspx).

Has anyone experienced this or have any idea what's going on?

Kind regards,
