Re: File extention problem

2004-04-29 Thread Alexandra GrĂ¼nauer
Hi Dave,
could you describe this file a bit more exactly? Where did you get it from?
What makes you think that it is an mp3-file? Does it have an mp3-extension
or does it play in an mp3-player, i.e. Winamp?

You can use Easy CD Creater 5 basic to extract cd's.

I'm not sure if you can leave both Nero and Easy CD Creater. I think
you can except for the Direct CD subprogram and Nero's equivilent.

Shane, I don't know what to tell you, as I haven't run across that
situation. I don't think I am doing anything extraordinary. BTW, there is
a new version of Napster available, 2.5.11. Although I haven't used this
version yet to download or burn, the info on the Napster site said they
have improved some interfaces, etc. Perhaps you will have better luck with
the upgraded version.

Will XP burn an MP3 to disk?

2004-04-29 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

Don't think I can do this, but would like clarification.

Usual thing, I want to burn an MP3 from my HD on to a CDR. Will XP allow me
to do this, I see it has a copy option in the file menu for my DVD/CDRW
drive, but am wondering if that's for copying standard audio disks. I have
Pinaccle DVD/CD creation software on this system, but can't get it to burn
for some reason, it just sits there, so was wondering if XP would do the
job?

RE: help converting .Ra to .mp3 in goldwave

2004-04-29 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
To the best of my knowledge and belief, to load a .ra/.rm file into
Goldwave for modification is impossible. I'd love to be proved wrong on
this, so if anyone has managed it, either with Goldwave or any other sound
editor, and has made that sound editor save in a format other than Real
Networks' format, I'd love to hear about it. It is possible to convert real
files to MP3 or wav format, though not with sound editors. I should say that
the process is somewhat cumbersome.
It can be done with three programs. The first, RM converter,
converts Real files to AVI files. For this program, go to
http://www.boilsoft.com
Then use AVIwav
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avi2wav.html
Which will convert the AVI to wav. Finally, use your favourite wav to MP3
converter, I recommend CDEX
http://cdex.n3.net
To convert the wav to mp3.
I've also heard a recommendation to use total recorder
http://www.totalrecorder.com
to record the sound from the sound card. This is good, however, only if you
have another sound card, or a system which you can dedicate to this, as it
will tie up the sound card.

New Device Allows Recording at Concerts
 Updated: Thursday, Apr. 29, 2004 - 7:42 AM

 By LUKAS I. ALPERT
 Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Oh, how far we've come from the 78, the 45, even the
 CD.
Now, minutes after your favorite band sounds its last note on stage,
 you can
load a live recording of the concert onto a cigarette-lighter-sized
 hard
 drive hanging off your keychain.

Take it home, toss the digital files onto your computer and then
 e-mail it
to all your friends with the message, Dude! These guys are awesome!

On May 21, new digital kiosks offering the tiny drives will be
 installed at
 Maxwell's, a small indie-rock club in Hoboken, N.J. At $10 a pop for
 the
recording, and $20 for the reusable, keychain drive, let the
 downloading
 begin.

This is a tool that allows fans to take home and share some of the
 best
independent music from small live venues around the country, said
 Daniel
Stein, CEO of Dimensional Associates, a private equity firm that owns
 eMusic
Live, which created the machines, as well as eMusic, a music
 file-sharing
Web site, and The Orchard, a marketing firm for independent labels.

For Scott Ambrose Reilly, president of eMusic Live, the idea is to let
 fans
have a legal copy of a live show, which gives smaller artists and
 their
labels creative control over the quality of the recording and a
 commercial
 stake in its distribution.

The understanding is also that it is not a one-time recording. Fans
 can
share the files with their friends, providing free word-of-mouth
 publicity
 for smaller bands.

For eMusic Live, the devices are just the next step for a service that
 it
and other competitors already provide: burning CDs of live
 performances
 right after a show ends.

What we were seeing is that a large number of people were taking
 their CDs
home and ripping them to MP3s, so we thought it would benefit music
 fans to
eliminate that middle step, Reilly said.

The technology is quite simple: The music fan goes up to the
 touch-screen
kiosk after the show and buys the keychain drive with a credit card
 from a
dispenser alongside the screen. Once that's done, the miniature drive
 is
inserted into a slot in the kiosk, and the recording _ stored as MP3
 files _
is loaded onto the device's 128-megabyte hard drive. That is enough
 space
 for 110 minutes of music.

A receipt for the transaction is sent to the concertgoer's e-mail
 address.

I can remember when I started the debate was whether the 45 or 33
 would be
more successful, said Richard Gottehrer, author of hits like My
Boyfriend's Back, and I Want Candy, and chairman of The Orchard.
 Now the
Napsters of the world are yesterday's news and this is the newer,
 legal,
 next step.

Whether the technology will take off remains to be seen. But its
 creators
are optimistic and hope to roll the machines into venues around the
 country
 soon.

Admittedly this won't be for everyone, Reilly said. But since the
direction of music is increasingly going digital, I don't see why this
 wouldn't find its niche.

At a demo for the device at a sound studio in Manhattan on Tuesday, a
 New
York-based band, Elysian Fields, performed three songs, which were
 quickly
loaded onto the pen drives afterward.

Later, at home, the device was inserted into the USB port of a laptop
computer and voila! singer Jennifer Charles' smoky, lilting lyrics and
 Oren
Bloedow's reverbed-out, brooding guitar lines filled the living room.

Charles called the new technology a beautiful thing.

I'm very excited to be a part of this incredible and sexy
 technology, she
said between songs. It makes us feel very James Bond. You can have
 your
little pens _ wow, beam me up Scotty.

new sound card help needed!

2004-04-29 Thread kevin and emma
hi, i've recently installed the turtle beach santa cruz card. from what i
read this card was supposed to be fantastic, sounding great! are there any
settings i can access anywhere to tweak the audio quality of the card?
because to be honest so far i'm disappointed!! and it's blanked out the
advanced option in the options menu of my volume control. which is where,
from memory i could alter tone, base etc with my old SBlive card. at the
moment this new card sounds muffled, and tinny with no base at all! i'm
using exactly the same set up as before, i have my audio running through my
hi-fi. the only thing that has changed is the sound card! i've got to be
missing something here, i can't believe a card with such good reviews can
sound so poor!! i know the santa cruz control panel isn't accessible without
sighted help, are the options i need to tweak in there?

Re: new sound card help needed!

2004-04-29 Thread Rocker
Hello,

A couple of things:

*Are you using a FM transmitter to send to your hi fi?
*What player are you using and what is the E Q set at? I think it is always
better to have the computer software player set as flat as possible and
adjust your settings with your hi fi unit.
*On the control panel of the Santa Cruz sound card there are a couple of
drop down boxes that can be accessed with the jaws cursor. One box is a
selection of preset E Q settings like concert room, heavy bass, etc. The
other one determines the setting for the speaker configuration example: 4
plus 1 6 speaker etc. Find those list boxes with the jfw cursor then hit
the left mouse button then root pc to jaws then select the pc cursor and you
should be able to scroll through them. Be careful though because some of
the choices will turn off the sound completely then you will need sighted
help to reset them.

Sorry you are having trouble with the card. I have use one for years now
and it has performed flawlessly.
