Jerry, the Iriver unit retails for almost $400.00 and had I not found a
better deal from Ebay I would have paid it anyway. IMHO it's the best
player around.

Gary, I do not listen to Audible but I would still write them and try to
support the community anyway because some day I might become a member.

Mp3/cd Player Batteries question

2004-05-27 Thread Scott Meyer
Hi Group
Looking for a Mp3/cd Player that has rechargeable batteries in unit, also would
like a player that remembers where you left off,so you don't have to start from the
beginning of a file or fast forward to the place you left off. Getting tired of
putting rechargeable batteries in unit and having them die in a few minutes because
Batteries recharger is not blind friendly.

Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, there is no device called the Jukebox

Sarai,

Below, I have pasted in a message that Aman posted to the list quite
some
time ago outlining the instructions for enabling a full set of talking
menus, and folder and file navigation. I just did this myself, and it
worked great. I now have an Archos with talking menus.

---snip snip---

Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few
requests
to send this info, so I'll send it to the list.
To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the
daily
build of RockBox. This is not the stable version 2.2, but a later
build, and
is available at
 http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would
any
other version of RockBox. Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos,
expand
the zip file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod
file
(player), or ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Now
download the english.voice file from

http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english
.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your
archos
and put the english.voice file into that. That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be
 j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect
your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking
menus.
Stay tuned to the rockbox list, subscription information for which is
on the
Rockbox site, for future improvements.
 Aman

Hi.
If you purchased it about three years ago, and it's from Archos,

Where is the headphone plug on it? Is it on the left side or on top?
Further, what does the USB port on the unit look like? Is it like the port

Copying a CD

2004-05-27 Thread Cynthia Handel
I'm going to copy a CD, using Real 10. My friend's computer won't play MP4,
the default for Real 10, so I'd like to know what I should change it to, so
she can play the CD on her computer, or another CD player. I know there are
a couple Real Player options available, MP3, wav, and, I think, a Windows
Media option. Which would be the most universal choice?

Thanks.

Yeah, this is exactly the problem I had been having.

Find one of your Audible titles (do not use the Audible manager to do this
but just find it in the folder where it resides), and press shift+F10, and
choose Open with. Then, select Realplayer. Once it opens the file, press
Alt+P to get in to the play menu, then K to find the Seek. Make sure all
position numbers are set to 0, and then close real player. Try the goldwave
again, and see if the file plays from the beginning. This has worked
for me.

RE: Rock Box again

2004-05-27 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
It is imperative to have a .rockbox directory on your archos drive. It is
not, however, necessary to make such a directory with mkdir, as unzipping
the rockbox archive to your archos will put the needed .rockbox directory on
the drive. Note that if you don't want to, or can't, unzip the rockbox
archive to the archos, you must create the directory with mkdir or md from a
command prompt, as Windows Explorer will not allow the making of directories
whose names are preceded by a period.

I think there is a place marker in the file. If you highlight the file and
hit enter it will probably open with real player, if you have it.
Then you can use seek to move to the beginning of the file. Once there,
close real player and try opening the file again with gold wave. It should
 begin at the beginning.

This has worked
for me.

the
original its just starting somewhere in the middle.

I think I have the same player. I'm having problems with it, but its

 Hi,

It is called Archos 20 GB jukebox. It is a recordeing unit. I purchased it
about 3 years ago. Does any one know if this unit is compatible with the
 Rockbox software?

  Hi.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no device called the

Jukebox Recorder 20, which records, and I believe the recorder with an FM
radio is called the Jukebox FM recorder, though I'm not sure of this.
There
may be a series I'm not aware of, but this is all I know as to the term

  Sarai,

Below, I have pasted in a message that Aman posted to the list quite
  some
time ago outlining the instructions for enabling a full set of talking
menus, and folder and file navigation. I just did this myself, and it
worked great. I now have an Archos with talking menus.

  ---snip snip---

  Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few
 requests
to send this info, so I'll send it to the list.
To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the
 daily
build of RockBox. This is not the stable version 2.2, but a later
  build, and
  is available at
   http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would
  any
other version of RockBox. Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos,
  expand
the zip file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod
  file
(player), or ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Now
  download the english.voice file from

  http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english
  .voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your
 archos
and put the english.voice file into that. That is, the path to the
  english.voice file should be
   j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now
disconnect
 your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking
  menus.
Stay tuned to the rockbox list, subscription information for which is
  on the
  Rockbox site, for future improvements.

Yep, I wasn't aware of that, either. But, my realplayer opens my Audible

If we could just trick Winamp in to playing them using, I don't know, the

still cant split tracks with goldwave

Hi folks, After having problems splitting files with gold wave I thought I'd buy it
thinking my total keystroke command count was up and buying the license would make
that feature work again. Well, I did just that, and I still can't split files. I'm not
saying its the program, I think its me. I read the manual but still cant get that
feature to work. Do any of you have unlimited calling? If you do, I would greatly

I'd b pulling my hair out with this now, but I don't have enough to spare. Thanks
again, any help would b greatly appreciated. By the way, what exactly does happen to

RE: archos usb cable?

2004-05-27 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
First, Rockbox will work on this unit if it is as you describe it.
Secondly, you can get an USB cable for the unit from RadioShack. All
you need is an A male to A male USB cable. That is, the large flat
rectangular plug to the large flat rectangular plug. In most cases, you need
a cable that has a flat rectangular plug at one end and a squarish plug at
the other. However, in the case of the Archos (excluding the Recorder V2 and
FM recorder, they use mini A cables), you'll need a cable that has the same
type of plug at both ends, and that plug is rectangular, large, and flat.

 Hi.
First, Rockbox will work on this unit if it is as you describe it.
Secondly, you can get an USB cable for the unit from RadioShack. All
you need is an A male to A male USB cable. That is, the large flat
rectangular plug to the large flat rectangular plug. In most cases, you
need
a cable that has a flat rectangular plug at one end and a squarish plug at
the other. However, in the case of the Archos (excluding the Recorder V2
and
FM recorder, they use mini A cables), you'll need a cable that has the
same
type of plug at both ends, and that plug is rectangular, large, and flat.

I found a hole bunch of other ones with scratches and minor dings for like
5
 bucks as the start bid.
 how durable are these things?
the reason why I am asking is because some of the ones with minor
scratches
actually work. and wasn't sure how durable these units are.
I found another one that is in working order and has been tested its a 6
gig
 one
it all ready has rock box installed on it if i were to go with this one
should it come talking if I get it?
 thanks

RE: archos usb cable?

2004-05-27 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
The players are going relatively cheaply, and they're quite durable
as these things go. Keep in mind, though, that a machine that has been
banged up will not necessarily last much longer in your hands if it's
already been used for a while. The main problem with Archos units is not
durability so much as quality control from the factory. Were I you, I'd ask
the age of the unit and make sure buyer protection is offered on the unit.
Units that are sold as is should probably be avoided. BTW, when you get
the unit, run a scandisk and see if there are any bad sectors on the drive.
I've seen units which seemed to work but with their drives so riddled with
bad sectors that if you try to put more than a few hundred meg on them, they
won't read. Note also that you can replace the drive, but this, of course,
requires buying a new laptop drive.
As for any unit with rockbox, it probably won't talk, since the
voice UI functionality has not yet been officially released. You'll have to
install the voice, which isn't at all difficult.
Aman

Unfortunately the letter has now been removed. What did goldwave say? They
must have complied.

I just converted a audible file to mp3 but for some reason its not
starting
at the beginning of the file. it shows that it is the correct length as
the
original its just starting somewhere in the middle.
