Re: Good digital recorder for recording confreences and lectures

2007-09-15 Thread Darrell Shandrow
Hi Albert,

I actually have three recorders: iRiver IFP 899, Olympus DS-50 and Edirol
R-1. I very rarely use the iRiver these days. Each of these recorders has
characteristics that are different enough to make them most useful in
different scenarios.

If one were going to be able to get only one of these, I'd have to vote for
the Olympus DS-50 due to its overall accessibility.

problem with sound taxi

2007-09-15 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi

I have a problem with sound taxi and I wonder if anyone has experienced
this.

When converting an Audible book, the conversion progresses relatively quick
as I would expect. However, when the progress indicator reaches 100 per
cent, it takes at least an hour to show that the file is converted, it could
be much more than that time. Sound taxi leaves at least an hour of blank
space at the end of the converted book as well and I suspect this is what it
is doing when the progress indicator reaches 100 per cent and stays visible.

If anyone has any suggestions I would like to hear about them please. I
wonder how often the software is updated, or how you can tell if you have
the latest release?

Thanks.

Re: problem with sound taxi

2007-09-15 Thread Keith Gillard
Hi Brian,

I have not noted this error in particular however,

I have had problems converting DRM files into .wav format.

The process will take the usual several hours or so but in the end the wav
file will not play or allow for conversion into MP3 format. I don't seem to
have this issue if I go straight to MP3.

Have you opened your book in windows Media player prior to conversion?
Sometimes the imbedded marks in audible files can cause havoc with the
conversion process. I like to open them in WMP, start the book, then stop
the book to reset the file.

There are updated versions of sound taxi which claim to batch process more
then two files at once, and claim to convert up to 40x.

I contacted the vender in the Ukraine but was advised that there is no
update policy. In other words, you would need to pay full price for the
latest version.

Good luck and let us know if you actually find a fix.

hth...Keith

Very pleased with the way Audasity is coming on

2007-09-15 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi Everyone!
Thanks to those on this list who recommended the tutorial on Audasity
with JAWS, even though I don't use JAWS all that much, (I prefer the
more powerful Mac and using Window-Eyes under such with the help of
Fusion), it has helped me quite a bit with the command structure and
I'd like to make the following observations.
Like the writers of the tutorial say, Audasity has both come a long
way in terms of accessability but still needs to come a long way
further, will it? ONly time will tell I guess but if people keep
contributing to the project as they have been doing up till now then
I'm happy to say that Audasity seems to have a very bright future
indeed.
The current Beta version is 1.33 (both for PC and Mac) and several
features shine here, including 2 definable cue/review periods for
want of a better description. For example, pressing play plys a
selection in your file, press the right cursor key to scroll through
the file or shift-right cursor key for a speedy scroll, audio is not
muted.
Are their problems? Heaps particularly with the Mac version I've
found so far, its extremely unstable but again we're talking of Beta
products so instability is not unexpected and will I'm sure be fixed
before the final release and finally on this point, for those who
believe that I could never see wrong with an Apple Mac or the
applications it runs? Well I've shown you up now have I not? smile.
I encourage you to try Audasity, I'm going against my grain here
because I usually advise people to try stable releases of software
but the Beta 1.33 is definately worth a spin and read the tutorial
which is extremely well written, you'll find the url to this in the
PC-Audio archives but I'll publish it again (or someone may beat me
to it) if people are interested.
Audasity is a multi track recorder and editor, if it keeps going the
way it has gone thus far then it should prove a very nice choice for
those who deal with audio.

Audasity is a multi track recorder and editor, if it keeps going the
way it has gone thus far then it should prove a very nice choice for
 those who deal with audio.

sound taxi problem seems to be resolved

2007-09-15 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi

Thanks to Keith for responding to the sound taxi query I had. For a reason
I cannot understand the third time I tried creating the file it converted
OK, after which I was able to make a daisy book out of it which I am very
pleased about as my daisy player will be the best vehicle for navigating it
if I want it as well as bookmarking. There is not as far as I know an
Audible player which lets you navigate by phrase, by small or large time
increments and allows you to set multiple bookmarks etc like a daisy player
can as well as giving you variable speed. So this will be good.

Thanks again.

I have an older Delta sound card that is similar to this one

The interface can be used but it takes a lot of mouse usage.
It does not have a Microphone input incase that might be
 something you need.

cutting audio and video from an .avi

2007-09-15 Thread Dave
Hi,
This might be skating the topic of this list even though my primary
concern is audio so replies privately please.
I've got a *large* .avi file that was a recording a friend gave me he
did via the internet. I have converted this .avi in to ntsc dvd video
format, converting the video to mp2, and multiplexing the audio out from
44000 khz to 48000 khz and multiplexing it from stereo in to 5.1 surround
sound, so basic concept works fine, and according to assistance i got it
does not only play but looks right. That was the easy part, the hard issue
is i don't need about 90 to 95% of the content, i would like to know if it's
possible to use some software package to remove the extraneous audio and
video. I know Goldwave can do audio, but not video. Winamp can play both the
audio and video of the original .avi so i thought that would be my best bet,
but i'm not sure if this is doable.
Thanks.
Dave.

Re: How does one Cross-fade in Winamp 5.x

2007-09-15 Thread Dave McLean
Rick, When I started using Winamp back in the 90s I tried using its

Subject: How does one Cross-fade in Winamp 5.x

Ok folks sorry for the lack of knowledge here, but I am starting to use
Winamp to pipe music to me setup in the living room via an FM transmitter
and have some great play lists put together. Now I would like to have the
next song in the play list fade in before the current song is finished
playing. I may even have the current song fade out a bit as well while
 the
next song fades in, but I can't seem to figure out how to accomplish this
 in
Winamp 5.35. I remember there used to be a cross-fade option in Winamp
preferences back in the 2.x days, but it doesn't seem to be there any
 more.
Can someone that knows what they are doing point me in the right
 direction?
I only want to use one copy of Winamp and would rather not have to run 2
instances of Winamp to do this. I know this used to be possible with one
copy of Winamp, within the current play list. Thanks in advance for any
hints on this. If there is a Winamp plug-in that will do this, that would
 be fine as well.

Rick, When I started using Winamp back in the 90s I tried using its
crossfading capabilities (so-called) but never got satisfactory results. So

I started using the SQR Advanced Crossfading plug-in and am still using it.
If you're interested I can send you a link to it.

2007-09-15 Thread Rick Alfaro
Dave,

Definitely, very interested as long as I don't have to use 2 running copies
of Winamp to do the cross fading. I would appreciate the link. Thanks
much.
