In an attempt to keep high quality in mind, this is the most affordable
phono stage preamp I could find on the net.

This is the Eastern Electric MANY MAX phono stage vacuum tube preamp.
You will find more information about it at:

I have one of these, but this is before prices got out of hands when you

Hope this helps.

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Sunshine,
There is a company call Peavey.
In 1999, they made a box that they called, a tube sweetener.
It had 2 knobs per channel on it.
One was for sugar, the other one was for spice.
I used it as an equalizer.
It made my mixer sound like it had tubes in it, when it really didn't.
That box had a pare of 12AX7 tubes for the inputs, and a pare of 12AT7 tubes
for the outputs.
I still have my mike preamp, and I still use it.
But the only thing though, is you have to turn the gain just about all the
way

down in order to put a line level in to it without it clipping it.
The kind of tubes it has in it are, 4-X 12AX7/ECC83, 2-x12AT7/ECC81.
The controls are, from left to right: power stand by channel 1 gain low
frequency

high frequency.
Channel 2 gain low frequency high frequency and master volume.
This thing, makes a good equalizer too.
Also in 1959, Bogen made an equalizer that had vacuum tubes in it.
I saw an old Bogen equalizer on eBay, but the asking price was to much.
They wanted $4500 for it.
My best regards.

High Garry,
Those were the mixers that had built in power amps in them.
There were some mixers that were only preamps, no power amps on board
at all!
But you had to have a really good power amp like the Bogen DS-265.
Or else, the RCA Victor DB-2130.
I have both of those amps.
I also have an RCA Victor stereo powered mixer that puts out 150 watts
per channel.
That one came out of an old church.
They were going to throw it out because it didn't work anymore.
I asked the pastor of that church what was wrong with it.
He told me, it just didn't work anymore.
I asked him if I could take it home with me, I mite be able to get it
to work again.
He said, sure, if you want it, then take it.
The only thing that I found wrong with it was, all 8 of the 6550 tubes
were burned out.
And some resisters and caps needed to be replaced.
Once I done that, it was like a new one all over again.
I still use it every now and then.
The record out jacks on that mixer, are connected to a pare of ECC82
tubes.
That really sweetens my recordings!
My best regards.

Hello Tom and Hank,
Finding a mixer with phono inputs these days, is just like looking for
a sonic needle in a sonic hay stack.
Your best bet, is to buy a phono preamp from a hi phi stereo store and
plug it in to 1 of the sets of line ins on the mixer.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.

High Garry,
Those phono preamps are for computer use, you'd have to have some kind of
an adapter in order to put that in to a line in.

You would need a phono preamp for hi phi use.
Hope this clarifies it.

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Hank,
I had the same issue with an Eastern Electric integrated vacuum tube
amplifier and my computer.
I guess it's the way the power supply in my computer and the amplifier are
grounded.

I couldn't do this with the computer, so I done it with the amp.
I lifted the ground wire from the chassis to get red of that humming noise.
When you have an amplifier that uses a pare of 5AR4 tubes or any kind of a
tube for a rectifier, you'll run in to that problem, especially if the power
cord is earth grounded.

Let the truth be told, that earth ground wire is not needed.
The thing can work without it.
But don't do this unless you really know what you're doing.
Because if you don't, you can get 1 nasty electric shock!
Hope this helps.
My best regards.

NLS CARTRIDGES

2010-04-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
Hello all list members,
For anyone that wants to know, you can put up to 4 books on a 2 GB NLS
cartridge that was especially made for the digital talking book player.
But the people at your library, will tell you that you can only put 1 book on
them.
I found that, not to be true.
I just discovered this, and I wanted to pass it along to everyone on this list.
My best regards.

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Hank,
You have a number of things that could be happening there.
The problem could be in the preamp itself.
If the power supply is built in to the preamp, you could be picking up noise
from the power transformer.
Or else, the problem could be in your cartridge, or the wiring in your tone
arm.

Or, it could be, just your old audio cables.
If you have the money to do this, try changing out your old cartridge for a
new one.

If the problem still grossest, then try changing out the audio cables.
Your best bet, would be shielded cables to eliminate the unwanted humming
noise.
If that doesn't work, then maybe the wires in your tone arm may need to be
replaced, or you need a new phono stage preamp altogether.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

I lifted the ground wire from the chassis to get red of that humming
noise.
When you have an amplifier that uses a pare of 5AR4 tubes or any kind of
a tube for a rectifier, you'll run in to that problem, especially if the
power cord is earth grounded.

Let the truth be told, that earth ground wire is not needed.
The thing can work without it.
But don't do this unless you really know what you're doing.
Because if you don't, you can get 1 nasty electric shock!
Hope this helps.
My best regards.
John.

High Garry,
Those phono preamps are for computer use, you'd have to have some kind
of an adapter in order to put that in to a line in.

You would need a phono preamp for hi phi use.
Hope this clarifies it.
My best regards.
 John.

go to the tracertech site and you will find a couple of inexpensive
phono preamps. a valve is what the British used to call vacuum tubes.
a valve EQ would be huge.

Hello Tom and Hank,
Finding a mixer with phono inputs these days, is just like looking
for a sonic needle in a sonic hay stack.
Your best bet, is to buy a phono preamp from a hi phi stereo store
and plug it in to 1 of the sets of line ins on the mixer.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

Hello all list members,
For anyone that wants to know, you can put up to 4 books on a 2 GB NLS
cartridge that was especially made for the digital talking book player.
But the people at your library, will tell you that you can only put 1 book
on them.

I found that, not to be true.
I just discovered this, and I wanted to pass it along to everyone on this
list.

My best regards.
 John.
