 Hi there!

I've not come up against these problems and as you know I'm sure I own a
 Zoom H1.

thankfully the battery life with the H1 is about 10 hours so I have an idea
of how much power I have left at any one time when I use the unit.

I have a set of 6 rechargeable batteries set aside for the H1 and they're of
the Sanyo type, they don't have the memory problems that the older type of
rechargeable batteries have plus you can have them fully charged and pull
them out when you need them, they're guaranteed to hold 80% of their charge
over a 12 month period which for rechargeable batteries is pretty
impressive, they take about 4 hours to charge on the charger which came with
them so I've plenty of battery power in reserve given that the Zoom H1 only
takes one battery at a time.

Now I'm looking for an external USB battery pack of some description that
can be charged and that plugs into the Zoom, that would be good as I
wouldn't have to then keep changing batteries but this solution will do for
 the moment.

Why don't you just get a Zoom H1 and use that? If you can use a cassette

A thousand percent agreeance with this technique. I used to keep a
cheap pocket AM radio on me for just these purposes. People used to
think I'd lost it! Then I actually did--lost the radio, that is,
never found another to replace it. Guess they don't make those things
much any more. You can figure out some amazing things by listening to
those noises. Like whether a PC has crashed or frozen or has just
lost speech but is otherwise operating, or even when the picture on
your TV set has gone wonky.

Hi!

Now this tip isn't going to be for everyone as not everyone wears hearing
instruments which can be used with induction loops but if you do? Well
here's a handy way to use your instruments to great effect when sorting out
one of the very few functions of the Zoom H1 which isn't accessible.

I'm talking about the Bit and Sample rate of the file you're recording, this
is changed in Standby mode by using the fast forward and rewind buttons,
rewind takes you back through the cycle whilst fast forward takes you
forward through the cycle of bit and sample rates.

When recording using Wave Broadcast format you cycle through 44.1KHZ 16 Bit,
48KHZ 24 bit and so on right the way up to 96KHZ 24 and back to 44.1KHZ 16
bit so how to tell where you are.

Well turn your instruments to pick up induction loops and put the recorder
near them. Now start recording, you'll be able to hear the recorder as it
writes to the SD card and the slower the rate of writing then the small the
sample size, 44.1KHZ 16 bit has the Zoom H1 writing to the SD card about
every half second whilst 96KHZ 24 bit has the H1 writing to the SD card
every sixth of a second or so.

Just thought others may find this helpful as I do, still haven't worked out
a way to set the date and time for date/time stamping of recordings but I
have to admit to not trying too hard, after all! one can change all that
when the files are copied from the H1 to your computer.

I've been reading about these so-called USB battery packs that charge
from the PC's USB port but have several different connectors to mate
with different appliances, and so far I haven't read a single bad
review of any of them.

I do like your comments about the Sanyo batteries, might look into
those specifically for use with the H4N, or for making an external
battery pack of my own with a double set of them. Some intriguing
possibilities present themselves here.

An AM radio can also be used to determine the distance to a nearby thunder

I have this problem and will probably end up sending the unit back.

I'm sure someone here mentioned a fault on a batch of Zoom H1 recorders that
runs
the battery down very quickly, or did I see that somewhere else?

Some More Digital Recorder Research and a Documentation Question

2010-12-06 Thread Matthew Chao
Hi, Folks! Did some more research on digital recorders and found the
Sony PCM-M10. It's a ProAudio series recorder, professional
grade. Has anyone had a chance to use this particular recorder? How
accessible is it for a blind person to use?

On an unrelated note, I have a Sony MZ-B100 minidisc recorder. Does
anyone happen to have accessible docs for this machine? Thanks in

Re: Running Out of Battery Power with Today's Digital Recorders

2010-12-06 Thread Dane Trethowan
For me its not a problem as I have plenty of batteries around, i've detailed
this so when I need the recorder? Well, I just insert a battery in other words
I don't leave batteries in the recorder.

The battery keeps the time/date stamp function going when the recorder is
powered down and I can certainly live without that function.

Re: Accessible Digital Voice Recorders, the Best ones?

2010-12-06 Thread Dane Trethowan
They can't really be compared as they're different machines and have a lot of
different functionality.

The DM4 has voice activation, Daisy functionality for playback - not recording
as far as I know - where as the 520 doesn't have those things, full reviews can
be found on Blind Cool Tech.

I thought about getting a 520 but I now agree with one of the other posters
here, the H1 would appear to be a far better recorder.

The problem with the Sony recorders, or, should I more correctly say,
the D50, is it uses that old Sony Memory Stick technology, which is
fine if you have an external USB memorystick reader.

Yes it is but really anyone who compares any of the Olympus recorders to
the Sony PCMD50 is comparing Apples to oranges, similarly comparing
Zooms to Olympus, Zooms and Sony PCMD50 machines are professional high

Yes it does but it doesn't have voice activation or Daisy playback so if
those functions are important to you then go for the DM4, if you
couldn't give a damn about speech, voice activation, Daisy playback and
just want a high quality recorder then go for the Zoom H1 and if you
want to do better than that then the Sony PCMD50.
