I haven’t physically seen the newer models either and I don’t think I really
want to see them, would make me physically ill.

Bare in mind too that an iMac an’t cheap these days, I love my Mac but how the
hell Apple expects to sell these machines by lowering Specifications and
charging like wounded bulls I just don’t know or perhaps Apple just don’t care.

I’m not sure I agree with that statement now.

Certainly the late 2012 Mac Mini is a truly outstanding machine, I have one of
corus but the later models have been cheapened and are far less powerful, this
could be an issue if you’re doing any heavy audio work.

Sorry I should have explained things better, the Samsung is a good
performing all round external portable DVD/CD/Blueray drive.

Not the most speedy drive around no but results are reliable.

Perhaps but you must understand that learning about Mac OS and VoiceOver is
only the beginning.

If you had no experience with windows, you would accept that the awkward
way things are done in MAC OS is normal but with a little experience of
windows you will find yourself trying to work out the mind set of those who
devised the OS and VoiceOver.

However, given your experience in windows you may find that something like
audio editing has a steep learning curve. Yes, I know that Garage Band,
Amadeus Pro and Twisted Wave are very good audio editing programs for
sighted people but for a blind person they can be very frustrating.

The question you should be asking yourself is: is there anything that I
would want to do that can only be done on a Mac and, if so, is it important
enough for you to justify the outlay, considering that most of the things
you might want to do are possible through your I Phone.

Anyhow, excuse me while I duck around the back to avoid the arrows and
flames of the Apple fans!

school still. So who knows how usefull it could have been. Next and
this 1 still persists, the Mac can't play Blu-Ray. That's a no go. I
don't bother with DVD any more. I'm a Blu-Ray guy all the way.

Hi Devon and Hamit.

I've always wanted to check out a mac computer but because ive been
so brainwashed in Microsoft, I didn't have the self confidence to
try it out for myself.

What I was thinking was to keep my old Windows machine active for my
mail and so on, but the Mac could sit alone in another room and if I
spend some time each day, then I should be able to grasp the basic?
eh? Especially if I joined a blind mac list.

One thing I have already found out that my Imac Store, which is in
glasgow, will spend up to an hour with a new customer in the shop.
Perhaps they may be interessted in offering me a little more start-up
time, given my blindness? Worth checking out eh?

Thanks for your ideas guys. For the meantime, I'm going to check out
everything I can on the Imac Retina on the webpage.

Thanks again.
Andy.

Apple has a getting started guide, right when you turn on a new Mac.
Just wait a minute or two then follow the spoken instructions.

Hi all.

I love everything audio concerning my computer. I've music,
described movies and talking books and I use programmes such as
Goldwave to record streaming music. I also love burning the odd CD
for a friend and recently, I've purchased a Zoom H6 digital recorder
for even more interesting audio work.

Many of my friends, who are not blind are telling me to buy the new
Imac Retina and plug that into my AV and sound system.

Any members use Imac for this sort ofstuff and is there any support
for a new comer like myself about.

Any advice would be very much appriciated.

Very best wishes.
Andy.

Sorry I should have explained things better, the Samsung is a good performing

Not the most speedy drive around no but results are reliable.

RE: Thinking seriously on an Imac rather than a new Windows 10

2016-03-21 Thread Robert Nelson

Bob Nelson

still. So who knows how usefull it could have been. Next and this 1 still
persists, the Mac can't play Blu-Ray. That's a no go. I don't bother with
DVD any more. I'm a Blu-Ray guy all the way.

Hi Devon and Hamit.

I've always wanted to check out a mac computer but because ive been so
brainwashed in Microsoft, I didn't have the self confidence to try it out
for myself.

What I was thinking was to keep my old Windows machine active for my mail
and so on, but the Mac could sit alone in another room and if I spend some
time each day, then I should be able to grasp the basic? eh? Especially if
I joined a blind mac list.

One thing I have already found out that my Imac Store, which is in glasgow,
will spend up to an hour with a new customer in the shop. Perhaps they may
be interessted in offering me a little more start-up time, given my
blindness? Worth checking out eh?

Thanks for your ideas guys. For the meantime, I'm going to check out
everything I can on the Imac Retina on the webpage.

Thanks again.
Andy.

Apple has a getting started guide, right when you turn on a new Mac. Just
wait a minute or two then follow the spoken instructions.

Hi all.

I love everything audio concerning my computer. I've music, described
movies and talking books and I use programmes such as Goldwave to record
streaming music. I also love burning the odd CD for a friend and
recently,
I've purchased a Zoom H6 digital recorder for even more interesting audio
work.

Many of my friends, who are not blind are telling me to buy the new Imac
Retina and plug that into my AV and sound system.

Any members use Imac for this sort ofstuff and is there any support for a
new comer like myself about.

Any advice would be very much appriciated.

Very best wishes.
Andy.

2016-03-21 Thread Dane Trethowan
I use my Mac Mini for audio work pretty much all of the time and there's
no doubt about it, the Mac is far more flexible than a Windows machine
when it comes to audio work.

That's not the fault of Windows by the way, its just the way things
are. To put it bluntly when you're dealing with Windows then you're
dealing with hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of
hardware/software configurations whereas with a Mac everything is of a
standard so configuration problems are illiminated which means a
smoother flow in the way audio is handled and customised by the user.

You use Goldware to record you say on the Windows PC? Well you'll find
plenty of accessible Apps out there to suit your needs, my favourite is
Audio Hijack 3 and that's just one.

You might find it of benefit to follow the mac-update Twitter feed which
posts updates to Mac Apps when they appear. You can then follow the
updated App on the App store, download it and test it.

SV: Thinking seriously on an Imac rather than a new Windows 10

2016-03-21 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi,
Honestly Mac computers are pretty cool and often relatively more stable then
windows pcs.
But VoiceOver is far from being as complex as for example Jaws, so it relies
more on apps being VoiceOver compatible.
And it took quite a lot of time before a reasonable scanner application got
available for the blind. Also advanced spretsheets stil lacks in terms of
speech, so for a job computer I'd still go the windows route.

But programs like audacity works fine on mac, many other music apps are
working good as well and so on.
Microsoft Word used on a windows machine stil is the very best and most
powerful advanced word processor around for the blind. Pages is sweet, but
doesn't come close in functionality.

Just passed easter I get a new Windows 10 machine with ssds disks, which I'm
looking forward to.
I've used all the other windows versions uptil now, so I'm very curious to
try this one out as all my friends tells me that it's super stable and
extremely fast compared to earlier Windows editions.

Best regards
Brian

I don't know if they'll give you any actual special treatment because
you're blind but there are plenty of resources out there such as Applevis,
and there is an email list called Mac visionaries. I use Windows 7 and will
soon upgrade to 10 so I've no plans to switch o a mac. Far far far too
expensive for me especially when I can get a kick-ass windows machine at
half the price, and NVDA is free.

time each day, then I should be able to grasp the basic? eh? Especially
if I joined a blind mac list.

Just
wait a minute or two then follow the spoken instructions.

Andy.

Hi Devon and Hamit.

I've always wanted to check out a mac computer but because ive been so
brainwashed in Microsoft, I didn't have the self confidence to try it out
for myself.
