Re: Any good audiotutorials on Audasity?
I can't really follow the steps numbered below, but it looks like a rather simple project for Audacity, using the "track" menu to begin tracks at different points. You also may benefit from "auto ducking" in the effects menu. Yes, of course you can set markers in Audacity and work exclusively on that marked section. You need to make sure the track says that it is selected by, if necessary, pressing Enter on it. You then mark off the section with the left and right square brackets. Re: Choosing a Mixer Microphone
Hi Robert, thanks for your thorough response. I have now tested several microphones that I have had for some time, just to see if any worked. I tested one computer headset, one computer microphone, and one older tape-recorder microphone. I connected all of them to the channel one XLR microphone input on the Behringer by using an adapter that converted the 3.5 mm plug to a 3-pin XLR plug. The first two did not work at all. Oddly, the older tape-recorder microphone did work to some extent. If I turned up the gain and level, I could hear myself clearly with some white noise. I also have a current Audio Technica ATR 2100 USB/XLR microphone, which I have only used by USB on my computer. I have been told by Zzounds, where I bought the mixer, that this will work perfectly with the mixer, but I do not currently have an XLR cable to connect it. My next step is to purchase an XLR cable and test this Audio Technica. I believe all of these are dynamic microphones. I did my testing both with and without the phantom power. None of them seemed to need it. I wish the Behringer manual had been clearer on the types of microphones that would work with it. Rich De Steno On 3/15/2016 4:02 PM, Robert Nelson wrote: Rich, I also have a Behringer mixer so I am familiar with the mixer controls. I have Rode, MXL and $20 Dick Smith microphones with XLR connectors that work well with the Behringer. It is possible that the mixer has a faulty circuit. In that case, I hope you have the original packaging and can return it under warranty to get a replacement unit. The good thing about the Behringer mixers is that they are simple and straightforward to use. You said in your original message that you have tried several computer microphones with XLR connectors. What did you have the microphones plugged into on your computer? The only computer devices which I know to have XLR connectors are external sound cards/interfaces. If that is so, did the microphones work when plugged in there? >From the point of view of troubleshooting, do you have a microphone with a 6 millimetre jack you can plug into the unbalanced socket below the channel 1 XLR socket? The microphone would have to be a dynamic unless you have a condenser mic with a built-in battery to supply power. I am assuming here that you have done such fundamental things as turn up the master volume and the headphone volume. Now, don't sigh with frustration, even experienced users have been known to overlook such fundamentals. Going back to troubleshooting ... have you tried to plug the microphones into channel 2? On the subject of dynamic versus condenser microphones, unless you are going to record performances of live music, you should use dynamic microphones. This is particularly true if you are recording podcasts at home. Condenser microphones are great for picking up every subtle quality of live music but they are so sensitive that they will also pick up every subtle quality of the dog next door barking at the same time. With a good cardioid dynamic microphone, you will probably not even know there was a barking dog next door. Re: audacity
After you press the left bracket, press space bar to exit pause mode. Then press space bar to the end of the section to be deleted. Then press pause and right bracket and space bar again. Now you can press the delete key. However, you now have nothing within the brackets to hear, so you must move the brackets to hear anything. Rich De Steno On 9/29/2013 4:13 PM, Joe wrote: Hi. Re: Audacity or GW
Audacity is free and allows for multitracking with control over individual tracks. It also has more extensive effects and better noise reduction than Goldwave, but it is more complex than Goldwave and takes longer to master. Goldwave has a reasonable price, but cannot multitrack. The key strokes in Goldwave are easier to use. Both work well with speech. There is a free guide on using Audacity with speech which covers the main issues. Olympus LS-100 Recorder
There has been some discussion on this list about the Olympus LS-100 multi-track recorder with spoken menus. I know it has had some firmware upgrades since its release, but an old review by a user on the Musicians Friend web site has some serious criticisms of the unit. The two that If ound most problematic are quoted below. Are these still problems? I am considering buying the recorder and would like some feedback. No way to pause playback. You need to think about this...imagine an analog reel to reel tape recorder, now imagine that every time you press stop when the machine is playing or recording, the transport instantly rewinds to the beginning of the tape...that's what happens with the LS-100! So, let's say you are trying to come up with a part for the 2nd chorus of a song...say 1:50 seconds into a song (like I was), when you are done and want to hear it, you only option is to press STOP (it instantly stops and resets to zero) then press PLAY, then hold down the Fast Forward key to advance to 1:45 seconds...and that's just to hear it once. If you don't like what you hear, you press STOP. RECORD to arm the track, PLAY, FF to advance to the 2nd chorus, RECORD to begin recording again, and then STOP and repeat the 1st process to hear it, every time having to press PLAY and then holding down the FF key for 10 seconds or so to advance to 1:45 on your song. It becomes very tedious to say the least. You can't pause record either but I'm not sure why you would want to (at least in MTR mode). You can't alter, add to, or partially erase tracks in any way once they've been recorded. You either accept them or erase them entirely. -- Rich De Steno To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

News on Olympus LS-100
I was reading about the Olympus LS-100 multitrack recorder on the Olympus web site and came across the below information regarding a firmware update, which may be of interest: Olympus America Inc. recently released firmware update 1.10 in August, 2012 for the LS-100 which addressed the following: 1. Improves the latency of the Record Monitor. 2. Adds the capability that allows the recorder to start recording and playing back simultaneously when the REC or PLAY button is pressed during Recording pause while in the Multi-Track mode. 3. Adds the capability to pause playback in Multi-Track mode. 4. Fixes the problem with the recorder displaying the wrong remaining time when it continues recording for a period of time. 5. Fixes the Solo function issue: You may now set it properly in Multi-Track mode. 6. Fixes the problem with the recorder saving an incorrect create date and time when a 64GB SDXC card is used. 7. Adds the capability to start recording by pressing once on the REC button on the remote controller when used. 8. Changes the setting to not turn off the LCD when the recorder runs in Metronome mode, Tuner mode, Lissajous mode, Menu mode, or when it is connected to PC. 9. Improves stability of the recorder. Re: Question about burning a CD
It depends on your burning software. Some software allows for burning with no gaps between tracks. Check the burning options and checkboxes when you begin the burning process. I put all of the q's in, and split it all up in separate files. When I burn a CD that way, it leaves gaps between the songs. I am not sure how to make that not happen. I would like to make the CD sound live, as it was originally recorded, but still be able to skip through to a certain song. When you buy a CD that is recorded live, you can do that, I mean you can skip to song number 10 if you want to, but listening to the CD straight through will let you hear it seamless. I am not sure how to do that. I hope someone can help. I am stumped. Re: CC EP radio was Re: Looking for a table radio
A very good pocket radio is the Sony ICF-S10MK2 Pocket AM/FM Radio, Silver, which is sold by Amazon for only $10. I have used it for years and it is surprisingly sensitive with decent selectivity. It also seems to run forever on the two AA batteries. Rich De Steno On 5/29/2011 2:02 AM, Steve Jacobson wrote: Dane, I just wouldn't expect this to be a problem with a double-tuned loop. It has been pretty common for medium wave radios to only have single conversion even when the short wave bands have double conversion. If the loop tunes too broadly, a strong medium wave station can theoretically overload even the front end of a dual conversion radio. Some of the older Sony's suffered from this, for example. Therefore, I'm disappointed to here this is the case. Does anyone have recommendations for a sensitive AM and FM pocket radio? I've been really frustrated with how pocket radios seem to overload badly on FM in high-level input areas. I have a Grundig Yachtboy which I like, but it is a little bigger than I want to carry around and I just don't listen to shortwave much any more. Since the CC EP radio got a mention in a roundabout way I'd like to say a few words regard this set. Yep, its very sensitive no doubt about that but it does have some problems and this is understandable given the price, after all $70.00 is a very small price to pay for a radio. If you're living near a very strong medium wave transmitter as I do then it may be that your CC EP won't perform at its best due to interference from that transmitter, this I'm told is due to the Single Conversion circuitry used in the CC EP. To Illustrate the point, suppose you're tuning through the medium wave band, you think you're hearing signals from far away when actually you're hearing what appear to be ghosts or shadows of the local high powered transmitter instead. The Solution? Well there are several you can try, the most obvious is to spend say $50.00 more and purchase the CC SW which has a Dual Conversion circuit and you notice the difference straight away. The CC SW is not perhaps exactly as sensitive as the CC EP but its far more selective for one thing and you certainly don't get the ghosting or shadowing I spoke about for another, I've several CC Radios and I reckon the CC SW would have to be the best CC Radio set I own. I reviewed the CCSW on Blind Cool Tech a little while ago so you'll find the review there. Blind Cool Tech also has a review of the CC EP from last year and I've just done a review of the CC II radio which is more sensitive than the CC EP however it suffers from the same problems due to its single conversion receiving circuit, this review is still awaiting approval to the blind cool tech site. You can usually get the name and artist of a song by typing a line from the song in quotation marks in the Google search edit box followed by the word song outside the quotes. No, because you cannot do anything outside the markers. You must move the markers. If you just want to move them a limited distance, you can go into the Set Markers option in the EDIT menu and set their times. Also, you can press SHIFT+Left Arrow to move the Start Marker earlier in the file, SHIFT+Right Arrow to move the Start Marker later in the file, SHIFT+CTRL+Left Arrow to move the Finish Marker earlier in the file, or SHIFT+CTRL+Right Arrow to move the Finish Marker later in the file. You will be able to play only the section between the markers. The Fast forward and Rewind do not move the markers, they only control the speed of play within the markers. - Original Message - From: Vinny Samarco [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2007 4:21 PM Subject: Re: A Goldwave question. Hi, I am a very new user of Goldwave. I have a lengthy file I want to go through and edit. It is actually a radio broadcast from which I want to learn how to delete the comnmercials. So, for instance, I will use ctrl A to put my start and finish markers at the default position. At the beginning of the file, I advance 10 minutes to the first commercial. Then I place a start marker at the beginning of the commercial, and the finish marker at the end of the commercial and hit delete. At that point, most of the time, I can't press pause again to move on in the file at the cursor position, but everything is locked up, the file won't fast rewind or forward, nor will it play when I release pause. The only thing that gets it to work again is if I hit space or f4, and then it jumps back to beginning of the file. Is there any way to keep going forward in the file, deleting things as I go forward? Thanks for your help. Express Burn
The free Express Burn program CD burner gives me strange numbers for total time used and free time when I load files to burn a CD. For example, it keeps saying 1:19 free time for every CD, and today it said over an hour was used up for some WAV files I set up, when I know it was not close to that. Is this a known bug in this program? I like to use it because it is very speech friendly with great hot keys, but this is a major problem. FreeverbX should then be available to your favourite DirectX enabled audio applications. Do not move the FreeverbX folder after installation. Re: mp3 bit rates
effect on the quality, but will take up more space. The table below gives you some perspective on quality to size ratio. table with 4 columns and 6 rows Format Bit Rate Compression Ratio Compression Ratio Approx. File Size/Per Minute of Music WAV Uncompressed 1:1 10 Megabytes (MB) MP3 160 kbps 9:1 1.5 MB MP3 128 kbps 11:1 1 MB MP3 96kbs 15:1 700K MP3 64kbs 22:1 400K table end There are roughly 1,000 kilobytes (kB) in 1 megabyte (MB), and 1,000 megabytes in 1 gigabyte (GB). Assuming a fixed bit rate of 128 kbps and 4 minutes per song, 250 songs would take up about 1 gigabyte of space. This is a good equation to use when taking a look at your entire music collection to determine changing your bit rates or upgrading your music player. There are hundreds of MP3 software players out there. If you search in the preferences or options section, you'll most likely come across converting or an importing tab. In Apple's iTunesÓ on a PC it is located In Edit/Preferences/Advanced Tab/Importing Tab, and in iTunes Preferences Advanced Importing on the Mac. Now choose your encoder. If you choose MP3 encoder in the Import Using Field, it will let you choose a fixed rate from 16kbps to 320kbps by clicking the Custom option in the Setting Field. Your file will then be converted to the popular MP3 format. In the custom screen you can also choose your fixed bit rate or check the VBR box to make it a variable bit rate converter. If you choose VBR you can then change the spectrum of quality that the VBR converter will use from Lowest to Highest. Please note that these conversion settings do not apply to music downloaded from Apple's iTunesÓ, just music that you import from your own CD collection. You may also notice other converter options in the encoder tab like Apple Lossless, AAC MP4 and AIFF. These are just more options for converting your music to an MP3 like file. A format other than MP3 may not play on your player. Apple lossless, AAC, MP4 and AIFF formats are supported by Apple products but may not be supported by other manufacturers' players or software. If you are not sure if your player supports these file formats, stick with converting to MP3 files. For more info on AAC and AIFF files please click here. Hear for Yourself The test is to convert a few songs at different bit rates. Then listen carefully, and see what differences you notice between the different versions of the same song. Your ears will tell you what really matters. Of course, the type of earphones you use can also make a huge difference in the way you hear your music. Shure's goal is to create products that accurately capture or reproduce the sounds the way the artists intend them to sound. Many people who make the move to using higher quality earphones, such as the Shure E Series line , begin to download their music at higher bit rates because you will notice the defects and nuances that were not apparent before. Re: Olympus WS-320M digital voice recorder,
There is information on it at www.blindcooltech.com. You have to look through the podcasts up there; maybe do a word search for it. The best price is probably at www.amazon.com. It records in a highly compressed, lossy MP3 format, something like 64 KBPS, so you will not get high fidelity. It is okay for speech, but nothing critical. - Original Message - From: Charles Reichardt [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, December 07, 2006 8:58 PM Subject: Olympus WS-320M digital voice recorder, Hello all. The screen is on, and you can see a list of songs. But nothing happens when you push any of the buttons. I tried recharging it but nothing happens. Can anyone help? CDR Capacity with Nero
When I check a blank CDR's capacity in Nero with CTRL+I, it shows 79 minutes and 703 MB. However, when I make an audio compilation of wav files and check the compilations size , the size exceeds the 703 MB while being less than 79 minutes. Do I need to keep the MB below 703 even though the total length of the wav files is less than 79 minutes? ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
