Hi, I suggest you update total recorder to the latest version, then
you choose software recording and you just switch off jaws speech
buy pressing insert plus space (before recording) and the same

you would need to use insert plus v, press the end key and then
spacebar to turn speech off and then enter.

2013-07-19 Thread Robert Logue
Yes.A usb sound card for speech is a good idea. You can even get usb
digital speakers that are fine with Jaws such as the Palo Alto Audio
Design Musik Digital Multimedia Speakers for arounf $50. Or a usb
sound bar for laptops. Be sure it acts as a sound card as well as
drawing power from usb. This is the simplest solution I've found. I
did have a problem with Jaws not responding or speaking quickly if it
hadn't been talking for a while but somehow that is fixed.

They are not good for music having no bass or treble but pretty good
with speech.

Re: Problem With Winamp Playlist Editor

2013-07-12 Thread Robert Logue
Hi. This thread is a bit old but I somehow didn't send the message when
I wrote it.

Control+tab cycles through any open Winamp Windows. If you start
playing with the library and seem to be stuck on a web page, the old
thing to do was close the mini-browser but that doesn't work any more.
So I found f6 sometimes takes me out of a explorer type window. That
doesn't always work either so I set Jaws to not wrap to top or bottom of
web pages and I simply move to the last link in the page and press tab
again to move to an accessible Winamp library control.

I wish this part of Winamp was easier.

Subject: Problem With Winamp Playlist Editor

Hello. I am primarily a Mac user, but GoldWave is still the audio editor
that I like best, so I loaded it onto a Windows 7 PC. I also loaded Winamp,
as WMP and I have never gotten along that well. With all that in mind,
here's my problem.

Whenever I play anything in My Music something called Winamp Play List
editor opens as well and pretty much takes over. I can't close the editor or
do anything with the file except to pause or play it by pressing space when
the editor has focus. Even when the file finishes playing, I can't close
Winamp's playlist editor. I don't recall this problem from when I used
Winamp in XP. Can anyone tell me how to keep Winamp's playlist editor out of
the way? ? I only want Winamp to play the file in question and close when
i'm finished playing the file. Sorry of this question seems simplistic, but
I haven't done much with Windows since XP. Guess I should have kept up with
the changes.

Thanks for any suggestions.

success was: missing Winamp keyboard eq controls

2013-01-26 Thread Robert Logue
I now have the Winamp EQ controls working. They are even announcing
their values as I change them. I just tried disabling the Winamp
scripts in Jaws manage application settings. So, either the latest
version of Jaws already has full support for Winamp and I didn't need
the older scripts from Jim Grimsby or Winamp is sending text to the
screen reader.

Maybe it is built in Jaws support because I just tested with NVDA and
the values aren't being announced.

It was actually NVDA that made me realize the controls are working and
to try turnong off Jim's scripts in Jaws. I'd tried NVDA with Winamp a
few days ago and was able to change the EQ. Although I couldn't read the
values, I could hear the difference.

Don't know why Jim's scripts blocked the EQ controls. At least they had
the value of providing Jaws help for some of the functions and commands
that I'd forgotton.

I just got my Jambox. I almost love it.

Only 1 big disappointment. Liveaudio supposedly only works with
bluetooth and not auxiliary. I don't have a bluetooth device to try it
on and don't have anyone handy to try with.

Also, am having real problems navigating the mytalk sight. How do you
initiate an app installation? How do I know if my Jambox was actually
updated?

Thanks.

Hope you can get yours working right Donald.

I really enjoy using my small Jambox. Recently, I inadvertently let
the battery completely discharge. Now it won't give the usual turn-on
message jambox ready. I did get it to say jambox is in pairing
mode. Once I got it to say the battery status. What is the
likelihood that reinstalling the software from the web site will
resolve this issue? It is no longer under warranty. Fortunately, it
plays both through blue tooth and via the stereo jack just fine.

Re: adjusting microphone setings on the Astro Wireless A50

2013-01-15 Thread Robert Logue

i have not heard of that microphone.
Some microphones are sensitive to placement.

Can you set listen to this device in recording settings? That will let
you listen to your voice as you use the headset. Make sure you have
headphones on and that it is playing through the sound card that your
headset is attached to.

Skype and some other programs have automatic volume controle. It works
well in Skype to level out those changes.

I think you can re install Winamp and have the chance to make those

Winamp will start up with the shell options but you would loose all

Shell integration is available in my setup. I just opened preferences

To achieve this:

Add 'Enqueue Play' to Winamp's associated file types
Insert enqueued files after the currently playing file
Leave playback on the currently playing file

4. Open a playlist in Winamp and start playing.

5. Open Windows Explorer and arrow to a file you wish to insert.

6. Press alt+f for the File Menu.

7. Arrow to Enqueue Play in Winamp and press enter. This will insert the

I am not aware of any cart machine type plugins for Winamp.

Hello fellow pc-audio listers:
I hope that you all have had a nice Christmas and that 2013 will be
good to you.
I wanted to ask you guys about Winamp. I recently downloaded version
5.63, which I've heard is very accessible with Windows xp and Windows
7. However, after listening to a discussion about Winamp on an old
episode of Mainn Menu from the ACB Radio archive, one of the
broadcasters said, that Winamp has a weird querkyness about it. They
said, that When you're playing a long playlist of items, and try to
insert a track into the list, instead of placing the track below the
one that's currently playing, Winamp will instead place the track at
the bottom of the playlist, which may not be where you want it to go.
Being that the episode of Main Menu I listened to goes way back to
April 17 2000, the information I heard might no longer be relevant. For
any of you who use Winamp for either broadcasting and/or personal
listening, is there any way to fix Winamp, so that it will place newly
inserted tracks into their proper place in a playlist? Also, is there a
cart machine plug-in for Winamp, that allows users to play sound
effects and radio station jingles? I know that Station Playlist Studio
can do all of this, but in case I'm not able to get my hands on a copy
of Playlist Studio, I might end up having to use Winamp for
broadcasting. I'm not giving up on getting Studio just yet, but if I
should need to, I'll have to use Winamp as an alternative. Thanks.

You don't need Jaws scripts for Total Recorder. However, it is helpful
to create a few Jaws frames to provide some status information.

there is a page with a table that explains all the differences at a

way to make it show up?

http://www.totalrecorder.com/features.htm

I did it by changing graphics to show all and graphics recognize by

img/unch is not included and
img/ch is included.

Now, from playing around based on what the manual said re your question, you

hit the middle of the top three buttons to get into the menus, and look for
the display and sound menu. Hit the round button in the middle of the

Hi,

Does anyone use an Olympus dm-620? Someone is asking me how to change the
speed on the thing because it sounds very very slow right now, and she wants
it back on normal speed. I thought I could figure it out, but it's not
intuitive.

Thanks.

Re: Recorder question

2012-10-15 Thread Robert Logue
This might not work but is worth a try. Pressing the play button while
playing, My dm520 cycles through slow, fast, and normal.

It might not work if noise cancellation or Euphony is turned on in the
playback menu. Hold down the centre OK button till you get to the
talking menu. Hopefully, speech guidance is turned on.

first off, to the best of my knowledge, a single stereo jack, or 2 RCA
plugs, are not going to carry a full 5.1 signal, as you would then be
asking

a stereo connection, normally for 2 speakers, to carry a 6 speaker signal,
which is what 5.1 is. it needs either 3 stereo jacks, 6 RCA plugs, or a
digital connection.

the only thing I can think of that comes reasonably close to what you are
looking for, is the logitech z-5500 speaker system.
it doesn't have all the ins and outs of a full home cinema amp, but does
have 2 digital inputs, an analog input on 3 stereo jacks, and it does have
a
single stereo jack input, which you could try using, but I personally
doubt

that you will get full 5.1 through it.
a few other points of this system are:
1. the controls and connections, are mounted on a remote wired pod, which
is

ideal if not a lot of space is available.
2. apart from the sub, the speakers are quite small, but still give a very
good sound.
and 3. apart from the sub, all other speakers can be stand or wall mounted
super easily, thanks to there swiveling stands.
it also has a remote control.
the only thing I had to say against the system, being a bit of an
audiophile, is that it could have been supplied with better quality
speaker

cable.
apart from that, it is a very good system for those who haven't got room
for, or who just don't want all the bells and whistles of a full home
cinema

amp.
for example, I got mine after a move gone wrong, when I had to downsize a
bit, but still wanted a decent 5.1 sound system for my tv. and like I
said,
apart from the not very good speaker cable supplied, which I changed, I
have

got no complaints.

hope this helps.

2012-07-01 Thread Robert Logue
I bet you are trying to use your computer as a surround audio system. I've
been checking out the options and haven't found reasonably priced surround
amps. They tend to cost more than recievers even though they are simpler.
I think it's because they aren't so popular.

I've chosen to look for real good powered speakers instead but again, the
industry doesn't produce many high end speakers for general listening. They
are either, cheep pc speakers, pc gamer speakers with lots of bass and
sparckle, or near field studio monitors.

Hi Tom and all. Not sure what to tell you. I had a cd that i ripped that
had 17 tracks out of 20. I found the 3 tracks in a different folder called
unknown.
I organize my ripping method by artists directory, then album directory. I
have found a few stray tracks in other places in these folders.
WMP also moved things around when i had the option to find missing
information. For example, I had a song that was on a compilation. WMP took
the song and made a new directory and put that one track in there. When I
saw the directory of the album name, and I knew I didn't own that album.
Sure enough when I went to see what was inside the directory it was my
missing track sitting there by itself with a totally different album name
in the tag.
So my advice, not the greatest, is too look around your music directory
that all your wmp stuff goes in to. If it's a big mess try sorting your
files by last date modified. This will tel lyou what folders have had
changes made to them in the most recent to the oldest.

Again not sure if i'm helping here or just making you pull out your hair.
good luck

In my case, I also use Windows Media only to rip music; I then go to My

ripped music to my computer. Once I find it, I then move it to wherever
I want it; typically to my external drive. But I still don't know why
that CD I ripped last night doesn't have all the tracks! Will have to
investigate further!

The problem is that I very seldom boot my Windows PC anymore, but going
from memory, I think you should be able to click on the library view
and

then view by artist or album to look for those stray tracks. Note that
you can also use other media players like Winamp or FooBar to look
through your library, if those interfaces are easier to use. Even
Windows Explorer should do the trick.

I need to do some ripping on my Windows PC anyway, so I'll take a look
and see if I can offer up any better tips than that.

tracks right out of the box (CDEX doesn't do this) as I understand it,

Hi. I agree with Chris. A good place to check is the unknown folder

that or the various, or the unknown artist.
When i rip a cd through wmp I actually search to see if there are
multiple entries for the cd sometimes I'll find more than 2 or 3
versions. I can usually tell which is the correct version because
track lists are different or the number of tracks are different.
One more thing, IMO, winamp is a much better autotagger than wmp.

Here are the details on this Olympus LS-100, although there is no mention
here of speech output:

Olympus has announced the latest addition to its popular LS series of
digital recorders with the addition of the LS-100 linear PCM audio
recorder. Aimed at musicians and audio enthusiasts, it comes with a
combination of professional interconnects, high quality sound recording,
multitracking and extra features in a convenient pocket size.

Olympus LS-100 Audio Recorder
It’s an impressive little device with a matching list of features
- two internal 90-degree directional stereo condenser microphones with a
frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and capable of capturing sound
pressure levels up to 140 dB (which is about as loud as you’d really want
to get).
- uncompressed 24 bit/96 kHz Linear PCM digital recording saved to the
internal 4GB memory or on SD (up to 2GB) / SDHC (up to 32GB) / SDXC (up
to 64GB) cards.

- separate audio and system circuitry to keep the signal clean.
- low cut filter at either 100 Hz or 300 Hz to eliminate low frequency
background noise.
- two quarter-inch XLR / standard phone combo jacks, supporting phantom
power at 48/24 volts to power high-quality external microphones.

- 8 track multitracking, with independent volume and pan control.
- tuner and metronome.
- Lissajous measurement which shows the phase difference betweenthe left
and right mics.

- direct CD mastering.
- 2″ LCD screen and all-metal body.
“The Olympus LS series has been a favourite of musicians, artists and
music lovers, and the LS-100 is an evolution in this series designed with
the working musician, specifically, in mind,” said Amy Leslie, Sr.

Marketing Business Development Manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.
“For songwriting sessions, band rehearsals, live performances,
broadcasting, or really anything that requires the highest quality of
audio recording, the LS-100 is an ideal, all-encompassing recording
solution.”
Nevermind all that, it just looks cool. Full details on the LS-100 are
here and it will be available from all good stores in February 2012 for
$399.

Ah, iTunes is a way of life! Seriously, I'm not an iTunes user, but I
went to itunes.com, clicked on the What is iTunes link and saw the
following:

   Overview

All your digital media, all in one place.
   iTunes Player

Where you organize, listen, watch, and play.
   iTunes Store

The world's #1 music store. And more.
   iTunes Everywhere

On your Mac or PC, iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Apple TV.

Play, buy, and enjoy your music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more.
Everywhere.

I'd suggest going to http://www.apple.com/itunes/what-is/ to check it
out. If you're still interested then you can download the program for
the Mac or Windows and start organizing your music, playlists and
podcasts and visiting the iTunes Store. Obviously, if you're going to
get an iPhone, iPod or iPad then iTunes is what you would use to
synchronize your content between the different devices.

I'll throw a forth player into the discussion, I like Itunes, the
people at GW Micro have - at long last - done a great job with the

the software can be a little challenging for beginners but there are
plenty of help guides and tutorials around.

I mainly like iTunes I have to admit for the Smart Playlist feature
where you can create aplaylist and literally programme it to play what

many times, if a song was added on a particular date and so on.

Re: Clarifying My Problem With Laptop's Not Recording Sound CardOutput

2011-10-27 Thread Robert Logue
Jaws has a way to change sound cards. Jaws utilities sound cards sub menu.
Maybe Jaws is getting confused. It does on my xp machine. When I change
default cards from sounds and audio devices, Jaws gets mixed up as to which
card I selected in Jaws utilities. Even when I choose a specific cad
instead of default, Jaws changes my selection when I change default audio
device in control panel. This has been happening since Jaws introduced the
sound cards menu and still happens with Jaws 13.

Haven't had a chance to try this in Windows 7 yet.

Steve, you have it pegged correctly. Yes, my previous experiences
have involved Windows XP Professional, while all of the issues I am
trying to overcome here are with a Windows 7 notebook. Yes, I too
have had that funny separation occur involving JAWS coming out of a
different output channel from the one where multimedia content is
playing. I've not figured that one out, either.

I've not tried direct sound recording yet with a Windows 7 desktop
that has a separate, dedicated sound card. So far I've used only this
notebook with built-in, integrated sound. Regardless of the cause, a
third-party software solution is logical to try; but the one which
appears to work, according to testimonials I have read, seems to be
inaccessible.

Ultimately, my solution might look like keeping an older XP PC or
netbook around just to make and process simple sound recordings, as
well as other functions that don't necessarily require a lot of
memory-intensive multitasking. My Windows 7 notebook is fast, and its
function above all is to perform tasks related to profitable work.
For this, I am satisfied it will do just fine.

Re: Need a good TTS program!

2011-10-11 Thread Robert Logue

Michael. Do you get this message when you try to change voice synthesizers

DSpeech
The voice you have selected isn't working.
This can be a general SAPI trouble.
Try to check the SAPI functionality on control panel.
OK
I just tried DSpeech after quite a long time of not using it so I'd
forgotten how to make changes. I tried to do the conversion and got no
sound at all. So I tried to change voice synthesizers and got an error
message like the one above. The solution was to go to the folder where
DSpeech is and delete the D speech INI file. Try that and see if it helps.
You can make a copy of your DSpeech INI file first.

Hey Brian. Well, this is a gigabyte motherboard recommended for audio use.
the computer is from studio cat, which is highly recommended by many blind

It is highly likely that some of my other issues are being caused by a

don't have some of the problems.

which Olympus recorder is the best to handle? Re: comparison between the LS-7 and DM-620

2011-07-13 Thread Robert Logue
I wonder which of the Olympus recorders is easiest to hold in the hand and
has the least amount of handling noise and wind noise. I have a DM5 20 and
cannot get anywhere near the kind of recordings Neil gets with his. I get so
much handling noise when I'm holding it. And, so much wind noise. Even the
slightest breeze makes a loud noise. the smallest twitch of my hand gets
picked up by the internal microphones. I really would like a handheld
recorder that records as well as my DM5 20 but has better handling and wind
noise isolation.

I wouldn't mind the recording button being on the front. Sometimes I don't
like pushing the buttons on the side of the recorder when it's in the palm
of my hand. It be nice to have my thumb land on the record button. Instead
of having to stretch a finger or thumb up on the side of the machine.

I find I do a lot of recording taking voice notes and just yakking away
since I got the dm520 recorder. But, the handling and wind noise are
probably gonna make it very difficult to do speech to text transcription
with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I haven't gotten around to trying DNS out
yet on my recordings. I hope it works okay. Still getting my computer
sorted out before I can do this.

In the meantime, looking for a better recorder,

I don't think it would be a good idea to buy the Wal-Mart headset for the
PC, because Bluetooth audio can be very poor, especially for voice
recognition. At least, that is what I've been told many many times.

Thank you.

I have a wireless USB microphone headset. The Plantronics audio 995 stereo
headset with boom microphone. I don't know what wireless technology it
uses, but it is 2.4 GHz. and not BlueTooth.

The difference between Bluetooth wireless and USB wireless Bluetooth pairs
to any compatible device that has Bluetoothin it. USB wireless can be two
things USB data general standard for transmitting and receiving data
wirelessly. Or, wireless audio that uses a USB dongle, which acts as a sound
card, with wireless transmitter and receiver.

Didn't even know USB wireless headphones exist. Very interesting. The last
pair of wireless headphones I tried used FM as its type and relied on a
transmitter that plugged into the mains. So glad I upgraded to bluetooth
as no configuration is really necessary apart from the usual bluetooth

Re: Sennheiser PC 160 Microphone headset

2011-07-06 Thread Robert Logue

I wonder if there's a five V plug-in power adapter that would work with your
microphone. Some sort of little preamp. Why not just use your voice
recorder? As

you say, you can plug the microphone into the voice recorder and the output
goes to your mixer. You like the headset and you like the microphone. So
some kind of little preamp that provides 5v plug in power. It's what you
need, if such a thing exists.

Hi Tim
Thanks for this.
I'm in a peculiar position with headsets. I keep buying them and then
finding they don't work well with my mixers. I have an Alesis multimix and
a Behringer xnix.
I bought 2 Bayer DT109s a while back and they were not loud enough. Even
with a mike preamp as they were so quiet the preamp just made them hissy.
They were not cheap and so when I heard how good the Sennheiser ones were
I bought them with the results mentioned previously. They need a 5v
current from what they are plugged into, usually a computer or voice
recorder, something missing from a mixer which will only give phantom
power.
I need something that will give me a good loud clear signal - someone else
has suggested that I could try the Sennheiser HMD 280 pro as it has a
lower impedance. Someone else says I need a mixer with a higher gain
option for mikes. It's beginning to get expensive without any real
certainty that it will work.
Thanks again.
There's boudn to be a mixer and headset combination which will give
professional recording possibilities.

I don't know if that is compatible with computers, but the fact that they
make that sort of headset is a very reasonable price is encouraging. I know

That does sound like a nice microphone. I imagine that with the

good for a desktop dictation microphone. But, I was looking for a headset

You could be right about that Gary. It doesn't seem like there are very
many headset microphones recommended for voice recognition.

I'm doing lots of research, but want to narrow the possibilities down before
I go to a store. Also, most of the stores carry microphones for musicians

OK John, you've succeeded in the whack-me-over-the-head part, now
let's get on to the tell-me-about-it part (LOL).

If you set the recording option in TR to Software, it load Winamp,
which actually plays the stream in question right through your sound
card. The audio is captured from the sound card, not from the stream
packets themselves. I know this is true by two proofs. 1. If you use
Winamp's down- and up-arrow volume buttons while recording a stream in
Total Recorder, when you play the stream back that you just recorded
while manipulating those buttons, the volume of the stream will, in
fact, go down, then up again. 2. If you record a short stream with
WGet (or, in my case, WinWGet, because I like wrappers), and then
compare that recording with another short stream from the same source
using TR+Winamp methodology, if your ears are good, which mine are not
but I've been told this by more than one person with far, far better
ears than my broken ones, you'll notice that the TR+Winamp version of
the recorded stream has artifacts that the WGet stream does not. I
suspect these artifacts are from digital audio being converted to
analog, played through the sound card, then re-encoded by TR. Like I
said, personally I cannot hear these artifacts any more, but I believe
they are there and I believe the reason for their existence is as
explained. If TR has a way of getting around this, I'd dearly love to
know how it's done. That would make my weekly captures of various
radio programs sound so-o much better.

of WinWGet. Except WinWGet isn't as fancy as TR in that there's no
scheduling function, and, to be honest, since WinWGet doesn't use
external programs to connect to and capture the stream, it actually
make a better, purer, recording because it just captures the raw
packets from the stream, doesn't re-encode anything another program is
playing. I sure wish TR worked this way, and if it doesn, somebody
needs to whack me over the head and tell me about it.

clicking mp3 links was: Reaper Multi Track recording software

2011-04-20 Thread Robert Logue
I think when you click on a link to an mp3 file like that one, that IE tries
to open the file but downloads it in the background instead. When I click
it, I get what appears to be a blank page. I am guessing that if I wait
long enough, the mp3 will load in to my player, which is Windows Media
Player. Somehow, I think having several different media players messes up
the IE settings on weather you get a prompt to download the file. This has
been happening to me more often recently. I've had trouble listening to mp3
files linked to on web pages as well. I end up right clicking and save as.

Hi Barry. I just heard about a new totally digital streeming speaker that
isusb powered. They claim they can get more volume without distortion by
keeping the signal digital right to the amp. They are sold through Apple
stores online so probably will be in stores to check out. I'm hoping our
local dealer will have some so I can chec them out.

Palo Alto Audio Design Musik Digital
http://store.apple.com/us/product/H4752ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0MAmco=MjEzMDM4OTY

Palo Alto Audio has 2 models; Musik M u s i k
and
Cubik C u b i k. The latter use external power and should be more powerful.

There web page is hard to use but here it is:
www.paloaltoaudio.com

I started out looking for those Rock speakers. It appears only sites that
have them are in Australia.

Yamaha also used to make a usb power speaker that was claimed to have
greater volume because it was an all digital design but I don't have info on
them now.

The point you are missing here is that I have heard a pair of speakers

amount of output volume and a sufficient amount of base. Unfortunately,
they don't appear to be available still. They are a little
more expensive than others I have seen (around $35) but that is not an
issue for me. I have heard 3 other sets of USB speakers and

Having said all that though it may be that some new speaker models out

may suffice but I'd imagine they'd be quite expensive.

If its the pair I'm thinking of then they are Power Assisted meaning
that they plug into an AC outlet, as I recall Barry wanted something which
was powered entirely from the USB port, the Logitech LS150 speakers are
such a kind, not much amplification but then again! not much power can be
had from a USB port.

The speakers you refer to at the Apple store are very good and I'll be
purchasing a pair myself shortly.

Yamaha also used to make a usb power speaker that was claimed to have

Dane,

The point you are missing here is that I have heard a pair of speakers
which meet my requirements in full. They have an adequate
amount of output volume and a sufficient amount of base. Unfortunately,
they don't appear to be available still. They are a little
more expensive than others I have seen (around $35) but that is not an
issue for me. I have heard 3 other sets of USB speakers and
the Rock 302g are streets ahead of the rest. If anyone can tell me
where I can still buy them, I would be most grateful.

Unfortunately I can't demonstrate them so you can judge for yourself.

Yep, thank you for underscoring the point I've been trying to make, any
good USB speakers - I think the one's I spoke of earlier are

Bose - need that extra power from the wall.

Having said all that though it may be that some new speaker models out
there use digital amps, that being the case then USB power

may suffice but I'd imagine they'd be quite expensive.

1. Must be powered via USB.

2. The sound source must be via USB, that is, not a separate lead into
the

audio output jack of the computer.

3. The sound quality must be good with a reasonable amount of base.

I have one set which satisfy my requirements, but am wanting to buy

but they apparently have been discontinued.

I purchased a different set on spec over the Internet, the Gigabyte

Apart from this, to adequately describe what I think of the

This question deals with recorders such as, but not limited to, the
Plextalk Pocket, the Zoom H1, the Booksense XT, and the new Bookport
Plus. Do any of the above recorders have a timer which can be set to
start and stop the recorder at user designated times? If none of the
above have such a timer, can anyone suggest an accessible recorder which
does? I am of course referring to hand held units as opposed to
computer based units.

Thanks for any info.

Is the Olympus connected to the pc when you attempt to edit the files? Are

It sounds like someting is trying to sync files but I don't know how that

Subject: Olypus DM550: Unknown Device error - unable to edit files

I wonder if anyone here has an answer, even more a solution to this?

I loned my Olypus DM550 out to someone to record some voice clips along
with a

dynamic microphone to improve recording quality.

The recordings play fine on the recorder itself, and on transfering the
file to my
PC the files played in Winamp. the problems began when I tried to edit
the files
in Sound Forge 7. the file will not play at all in SF7; a message pops
up
unknown device. Editing is impossible too. I then loaded the files
into
Goldwave. No message but no ability to highlight the file to copy and
paste into
another program. Converting the file to .wav in Goldwave has made no
difference.

The Olypus recorder in question was set to .mp3 192kbs. The transfer was
via USB,

of course.

So, any ideas what gives here? It is perplexing to say the least. I did
copy the
file by kplaying it in Winamp and recording into Sound Forge, but just as
well the
recordings were very short. Would hate to have to do that with a long
recording,

not to mention degredation of sound quality.

Any answers or pointers very welcome.

Thanks.
Ray

Play menu, playback mode setting, playback area setting, all files playback.

I transfer with WMP10. But sometimes just copy and paste using Windows if
I'm sure the file is in a compatible format.

Something I find difficult is if I set WMP to create folder hierarchy on
device, (the default action), it is harder to find the music I want to play.
You use the up or down arrows to move to a folder which will be the artist,
then the right arrow to move the album list. Then right arrow again to get
to the list of files in that folder.

The intro playback setting is under display and sound menu.

There are so many laptop speakers out now. The problem is actually getting

Some are USB powered. Others run on batteries, either replaceable or

like small speakers. I've read reviews for some that make big claims and
have bought on recommendations to be totally disappointed. I suggest to buy
locally if possible from a store that will let you return if not satisfied.
If you go online or mail order, you could spend a lot of money returning

I

have another version. Keep tabbing till you hear the mute and volume
controls. They are independent of the Windows mixer.

Also check tools, options, devices tab, speakers, properties,; to set

I agree, it's strange that rewind is disabled in WMP and we have to use a
seek bar that has no direct hot keys or even a quick way to bring the
slider

Re: what speech device to use on a laptop when playing music question

2010-05-27 Thread Robert Logue
Ok. With Jaws 10 and later, there is a sound card manager. Main Jaws
window, utilities, sound cards sub menu. It is normally set to the windows
default sound card but you can set it to the exact device you like. So, if
you have built in sound and a USB audio device, you can set jaws to the
internal sound card and use sound and audio devices to set the default sound
to the external card. This is with XP. Don't know about Vista and 7.

If you only want the music from your media player to go to the external
sound card, you would leave the internal sound card as your default and
change the output in your media player.

One thing about USB audio devices. They automatically become the default
audio device when plugged in. I forget if there is a way to stop that.

You know. After all that, you might be better off with a hardware external
speech synthesizer. Only one I know about is the Triple Talk but don't know
if is even available.

You could use an external sound card instead and use the internal sound
for speech. It would cost less and may sound better. One possible
disadvantage is not having hardware speech. I can't suggest any sound

Hello List: Have had something strange happen recently..and it's happened
twice: there was a station I wanted to hear that uses Windows Media to
stream their audio. When I decided I had listened as long as I wanted, I
hit my alt-F4 to stop the stream and close out Windows Media. Well
now..while Windows Media seemed to go away, the stream did not! I was
back on my desk top..and found myself looking around to find how to get to
the stream to stop it..but could not! This happened again with a
different station that also uses Windows Media to stream their audio;
same experience: when I went to close it out, the stream kept on
going..although Windows Media was gone! The only way to stop it (as far
as I could tell)..is to restart the computer! Can somebody please tell me
what is happening here? I'm using Jaws 11, running Windows XP Home with
Service pack 3; the sound card is an Audigy 2 (think I'm right on
this)..hopefully I have provided enough information to you so you
can figure out what is going on here! It's very strange when you know
(or at least you _think_ you know that you have closed out the player..but
the stream plays on..with no way to stop it!

Re: sampling rate information

2010-05-11 Thread Robert Logue
In WMP for the currently playing track; Go to the file menu and choose
properties. For tracks in playlists,; press the context key and choose
properties from the new menu. Note: you may need to press the spacebar
first as sometimes the item is not selected and you won't get a menu.

I know this works for WMP 10 but have not tested on other versions.

Re: access to cakewalk sonar's many plug-ins for Window-Eyes Users

2010-05-11 Thread Robert Logue
I got to say that if I was using WindowEyes now, I'd go for Chris Bell's $10
per set offer.

The only reason I use Jaws now was to get more access to Sonar. I haven't
updated WindowEyes for years. Not even sure what version it was. I
actually felt like it was a let down moving to Jaws in some ways. I don't
want to get into a Jaws vs. WindoEyes war. I'm just really happy that Chris
is doing this. And, someday maybe I'll update my WindowEyes.

directly at cb1...@sbcglobal.net. Also all prices are in US dollars.

From:Chris Belle cb1...@sbcglobal.net

Hey you all,

I'd like to put my humble services before you and test the waters as
to possible interest and viability.

Some of you know me, my name is Chris Belle and I've been causing
trouble, errr, I mean being helpful and productive and working with
people in and around and about the recording arena and computer
technology for more years than I'd like to think about 'grin'.

Well, for those of you who might be using cakewalk sonar, which is my
daw of choice, what we've always lacked in the window-eyes world is
easy access to the plug-ins.
We have basic access to the main app, but not the vst or dxi stuff
natively.

That's where the true power of sonar is.

Many of these are very graphical, with no way to easily get to
sliders and buttons, and this is something that jaws users enjoy with
caketalk and jsonar with custom scripting with hotspot clicker.
Hotspot clicker has it's limitations too.
I have been working with gwmicro to perfect it's own hotspot and it's
coming along nicely, but in the mean time,
I've been using another third party tool and
my knowledge of sonar to script very easily portable scripts for the
various plug-ins in sonar, such as the sonitus compressor, equalizer,
sessiondrummer3, etc.

So far, I've done sessiondrummer 3, which has a 12th channel mixer,
and a graphical drum kit, it's completely and easily accessible for a
blind person with window-eyes now.

Display resolution doesn't matter, this tool I'm using seems to very
gracefully handle this.

Now what I'm getting at is that I want to offer these scripts for
others not for free, but for a very low price.

But I don't want to get in to a lot of hand holding, and support issues,
I want to reasonably support these products, but I want to offer the
benefit of my hard work to others to help bridge the gap for us, and
do it so anyone can afford it.

I was thinking something like $10 a plug-in.

Well, my plug-ins will have custom help, menus, and hot keys and hot
strings.

Hotstring are cool, because you can type a word or part of a word,
followed by an ending character such as period or enter and then
trigger the action.

Say you want to go to the 10th pan pot on sessiondrummer3 you type
p10. and there you are, you have focus and you can move the slider
with the arrow keys.

Imagine having to do that for about 150 controls finding them manually.

Same for playing midi patterns, or routing to the different pads to
load different samples.

How about hitting ts. for threshold slider and being right there, and
then rs. for ratio slider for a compressor, and then jumping over to
your output meters or makeup gain to see how the compressor is
affecting the signal.

The nice thing is that these scripts will watch for the window your
in and sit quietly and not do anything till your in the right window.

It couldn't be easier to install these scripts, just run the
executable and it's working.

Completely screen-reader independant, but they make a beautiful
companion for our fine screen-reader we all love.

And it doesn't matter which version of we you are running or whether
scripting is on or off.

Anyway, what I have to offer so far is
sessiondrummer 3, the sfz soundfont and sample player, both the
internal and stand alone versions for sonar 6 and beyond,
the sonitus compressor, and just for fun and testing, I did malware
bytes to do a few actions
that require multiple mouse clicks quickly.

Oh yeh, and antares autotune evo has a basic script too.

Anyway, I was approached by someone privately off this list who
expressed interest and said it was worth something to him, and so not
a programmer by nature, I've taken on the challenge of making those
of us who love to work with audio
and love to use we a little easier.

If I get enough interest, I'll start making this available, if not,
I'll shut up and go away, and do it for myself.

Blessing from us here at
Affordable Studio Services.

Chris Belle

Spark is a very interesting program on CBC Radio. Check out the links on the

The latest version of skype that works fully with Jaws 11 and windows XP.
is 4.1.0.179. I found this by starting with the newest version and going
back one version at a time until I got all keyboard features to work with
the Jaws scripts. Take care. Joe.

Wireless PC Audio USB Sound Card

2010-04-29 Thread Robert Logue
Interesting new fm transmitter. It's USB powered but is not a sound card. I
wonder how good it will be. They claim a Range Up to 160 Feet.

Would be cool for my laptop.
