Hi, Since the subject of TV tuner cards have come up on this list I'd
like to know whether you can buy a Tv tuner card if you have a lap top
computer. Someone told me that you couldn't get one if you had a lap
top computer. I've got a friend who has a lap top and would be
interested in buying a Tv card tuner if it is possible to buy one
using a lap top. If it is possible to buy a Tv card for a lap top I'd
be interested in finding out which one would be the best to buy.
 Thanks.

i always use the default sound recorder for all my recording purposes.
surprised! people might ask how is that possible when it allows recording
 up

long as the recording you wish to do and there you are, you are ready to
 do
 your recording.
 happy trying.

 HiGang:

For some reason, I am unable to adjust the volume, balance, or mute
 options
of my Delta 66 using the DeltaPannel software.

I can, however, affect some changes using the standard windows XP Volume
 ap.

The main problem is that I am unable to rout hardware inputs to hardware
 outputs.

I am only able to use WaveOut. I did uninstall and re-install the
 DeltaPanel software.

For the Record: I am using a Duel 2 core processor and Media Center.

Any help would be appreciated all over the place.

 Thanks gang.

having it as a secondary operating system. It does pay of quite a bit to
upgrade to a newer os eh? Smile.

Hi Edwin. As far as I know, Sound Forge 8.0 cannot be installed on Vista.
You would have to upgrade to Sound Forge 9.0 to use the program on Vista.

One of my Vista concerns is that it will not run some programs that were
designed for XP. So, yes you do indeed have advantages with new Vista
 audio
alternatives, but you may also find that a necessary element of the
 upgrade
is to upgrade software as well. And in some cases, there could be
 software
packages that the developer has abandoned.

While these audio aspects are no reason to reject Vista, it seems to me
 that
they must be considered when deciding whether or not to upgrade to Vista.

Just my two cents for whatever it's worth.

 Subject: Audio on Windows Vista

 Hi All,

I recently tried playing with Windows Vista and thought of asking some
 audio
related questions as I am still in the midst of exploring. I got to say
that, if vista matures a little further as time progresses, its
 worthwhile
the upgrade just for the audio part. 1 very big bonus is that we could
 now
control indivisual volume controls through the mixer. For example, if we
 are
listening to real player streams, on xp systems, when u tune down the
volume, it utilise the wav volume and this would affect our screen
 readers
too. However, on vista, u could indivisually set the current active
application's volume level. In this case, u could have different levels
 for
your screen reader and real player. This is especially benificial for
 jaws
as eloquence of jaws on xp system uses the main level of the volume
 control
of your soundcard. But, I am just a bit puzzled. If such a powerful
 volume
mixer exists in vista, why there isn't a volume control icon on the
 startup
group like in xp? I know 1 could just go to control panel and go in to
 the
sounds item to select our sources and go in to the properties page to
 set
them, however, i find slightly of a hassel to do that. Of-course I could
just create a shortcut of the sndvol32.exe at the start menu. Any intake
 from listers on this?

Next, though not completely audio related, but someword related. I tried
installing Sound Forge 8.0D in vista. I got a msg that SF needs .frame
network 1.1. I tried installing but got some error message and my .dot
 frame
network couldn't be installed. Does listers know why is this so and is
 there
 a work around?

Finally, its regarding vista's windows media centre. I understand that
 we
could setup our tv-tuner card to work with WMC and use it to set
 schedules
and recordings etc and just use it without installing any related pvr
softwares, as in xp. Currently, I have a cable set top box attached to
 my
card. When I tried configuring it and told it that my card is attached
 to
 a
external set top box, it told me that I need a microsoft remote control
 or
something of that sort. I am a bit puzzled on this. How exactly does
 this
work? Is WMC any accessible at all? Have I done anything wrong?

Thanks all and hope to get any relevant input from listers who have
experience with vista and its audio. Thanks.

 Regards,
 Edwin.

You might want to try the Edmonton distributer in Canada, otherwise,
 their's
a distributer in Ontario that sells it, or you can get it from online

 Hi

A member of this list wanted the jaws scripts for Sound Taxi to be able
 to
verify the percentage status of converted files on the press of a
 keystroke.
This is now included within the scripts if you go and get them again.
 This
can be verified with F8 at any time.

In addition, there is an automatic percentage count feature. This can
 be
enabled or disabled with F9. The setting is remembered across windows
sessions. If enabled, periodically you will hear a percentage count as
 the
file is being converted and you are advised when the conversion is
 complete.
If you switch to another application, and return to Sound Taxi, the
 percentage count is resumed.

 Hi Again Larry
Have you considered Adobe Audition 1.5 (the latest is pretty
 inaccessible)
It works on all fronts including multitrack recording and playback, up
 till
jaws 7.0 or 7.1 Even selecting is fairly easy. Its noise reduction
andpop/click remover, and its clip restoration if over recorded are
 good -
each of these and of course the other filters and exciters, etc. are
accessible and fairly flexible as to adjustment. Probably DC6 has the
 edge
on cleaning, but if you happen to hit upon the right combination in
 Audition
it can sometimes work better than the opposition. It's also pretty
 navigable
 when it comes to files.
Apologies if you know it already.

Hi Gordon. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions to offer in that
regard. This is why I'm looking at adding something else to my system.
 I'd
like to continue using DC6, of course, but I'm also looking for
 something
that will allow me a bit more flexibility, both in adjusting filters
 and
 in
automating certain restoration aspects. I considered Sound Forge, but
 aside
from the filters added in with Noise reduction 2.0, I see no advantages
 for
someone who works with records of all types as well as cassettes. I do
 use
GoldWave a lot, but fI would like to see if there is something out
 there
that will offer that sort of accessibility with a bit more speed.

Hi Larry
It's not the most intuitive but you have to use the Jaws Cursor. I
 don't
 use
it much but when I have it's been easy to clean up and excite a file.
 If
you're used to DC6 you may just prefer using this and your experience
 of
which filter is good at which point. Mentor is just trying to automate
 the
process. You click with the jaws cursor on the start button (sighted
 help
may be necessary at first to label them) - once you're in the program
instructions are on screen and you click on the appropriate buttons.
 After
 a
few minutes of experimenting and understanding the logic of the
 buttons
 you
can choose to clean with different recommended filters and to excite
 or
enhance with appropriate filters. If you like to tweak that's possible
 too.
It's a good resource for bringing in files from external sources and
cleaning them fairly easily. Sometimes it's just better to use DC6
 itself.
Can I ask you how you navigate long files in DC6. I tend to cut them
 in
Audition before loading them into DC6. I haven't found an easy way to
 select
 areas in DC6. Have you?
While working through the dialog boxes of filters is easy I also have
difficulty in using the multi filter option. It seemsto involve a bit
 of
dragging and dropping. I usually settle for using the presets which in
themselves are pretty good. Have you a way of using the multitab
 filter?
 Regards.

There are numerous ways to control volume even if you cannot get at the
volume controls within the gameday player.

 (1) Get a keyboard that includes extra keys for raising and lowering
 volume
 as well as muting.

 (2) Autohotkey from autohotkey.com
has among numerous scripts available a volume control one where you can
 define keys to do this.

On the programs page of JFWlite

 www.jfwlite.com

you will find a link to a program called Volume Tray.
This too gives you control over your volume.

 Another handy utility called

 Wizmo

 available from

 www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

allows you to do all sorts of neat tricks. I have set up hotkeys to set 5
different volume levels and another that makes certain that the soundcard
 is
 active.
A couple other neat functions of Wizmo is that it can force shutdowns and
reboots of your pc in those times when all else fails and normal
 shutdowns/reboots just hang.

With all of the above, why worry if you can happen to locate a particular
 player's volume controls.

 Hi,

Has anyone gotten Game Day Audio to work inside of Windows Media Player?
 If
so, how did you do it? I sure wish Replay AV would work with MLB.

 Hi Friends,

I am working for National Association for the Blind, India and we have a
talking book facility which we are about to modernize. Till now we are
recording analog and now we are planning to shift to digital format.

We are given 2 options: One based on PC's whereby we record on Hard Disks
and use sophisticated software. The other option--and cheaper one at
that--is using CD/DVD recorders to record and use PC for editing. We have
3 studios so we will need 3 PC's and all the other things. They are much
more costly than 3 recorders. But which is a better option? Please help.

card set to the appropriate channel like in the old Vcr days would act

Ok! For what likely is the stupid question for the month of March on
 this
 list:

I would like to run the signal of our tv cable into a desktop pc.
I am guessing that I need a tv tuner usb card into which I plug the
 cable.
That is probably the simple part.
I am also guessing that I also need a piece of software to select the
channels that are playing at any given moment, and this could have some
accessability issues as the wrong software might make channel hopping
 difficult.

I am using Window-Eyes 6.0 on a machine operating with XP home with 512
 mb
 of ram.
There is plentyof free disk space.

Can you folks give me some direction as to what I need to look for.
 While
I rather spend more than less, my ultimate goal is simplicity of us
preferably with the simplicity I can get now of tapping a few keys or
numbers and getting to the desired channel.

Here's an item which was posted to the blind Cool Tech list which
   should
  be
   very interesting.
   Matthew

   Hello all,
I have written a new sound-editing application called Audio Magic. It
   is
  an
alternative to Sound Forge 8, but it is in the public domain and it
is
freeware. It does not yet have all of Sound Forge's features, but we
   are
only on the very first beta release at this point, and I would like
all
  of
your feedback on how I could improve the interface. I am a JAWS user
  myself,
so I have tried to make the interface to the application as
accessible
  as
possible. You will not need JAWS scripts to make use of the program's
features; the program will communicate it's information to JAWS
without
  any
other files needing to be installed. This program is also a lot
faster
  than
Sound Forge in terms of saving files, etc. It includes features such
as
changing pitch, reverb, noise reduction (coming in next beta), etc.
It
  can
currently save in MP3, WMA, OGG and Real Media formats. More support
is
coming soon and people will be able to write plug-ins to support
other
formats if they wish. If you would like to try it out, you can go to
   http://audiomagic.roachhost.com
and download the latest beta version from there. You can read the
   user's
guide and other documentation after you've got the program installed.
Documentation will also be available online by the time the final
  product
  is
released. If you feel any changes need to be made to the
documentation,
  let
me know that as well. Hope you all enjoy the program.
   Thanks,
   Daniel

Subject: Sound Forge 8, JAWS 7, and repetitive Speech

I'm just getting truly immersed into JAWS, so please forgive my incredibly
 inept question.

I'm using Sound Forge 8 with JAWS 7, as the subject line indicates. When
 I
save a file in Sound Forge, JAWS repeatedly speaks the name of the file
 and
gives the percentage saved. I've turned off the progress announcements
 for
this particular application. Not only do I hear the progress bar, I hear
 it
in the most annoying way. It begins by saying s s s s s several times,
 then
sa sa sa sa sa sa then it adds the v and so on. I've no doubt that there
are scores of you who are using JFW 7 with Sound Forge 8. I suspect
 you've
all long ago solved this, and again I ask your forgiveness in advance for
such a truly off the wall question.

Is there some kind of view I need to change in Sound Forge to end the
repetitive speaking of the progress bar? I'd love to get a percentage
 every
few seconds, but I doubt seriously turning on the progress bar would
 change
the fact that the screen reader just continues to add letters and numbers
until it speaks the entire progress bar.

It seems to behave that way whether I'm using the PC cursor or the JAWS
cursor. I've no doubt this is a simple fix--probably embarrassingly
 simple.
So please, by all means, embarrass me with the right answer. smile

 Kindest Regards,

 Nolan Crabb

For those of you who sit there and complain about not getting something

 Hi everyone,

I am currently using Soundforge to edit for a radio program which at
 times
involves the need for multitracking work and the mixing of tracks. I
 have
been able to do a limited amount of this with Soundforge but it is time
consuming (at least for me so far).

I am told that Cooledit is capable of doing this task better, but I do
k\now know how accessible Cooledit is to blind users.

I am also loooking at Studio Recorder, and so far it is my impression
 that
this does not do multitracking and mixing.

If anyone has any information about these specific software products or
 any
additional ones in regard to multitracking, I would very much appreciate
your feedback. Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to
 offer.

 Jan Santos

It's been a very interesting experience, but managing a list of this

Yes. it is very accessible with Jaws. I do have a question. When you take
out some editing faulters such as the beginning silence, when you use noise
reduction, how come you get the audio to sound squelchy? What I do is edit a
little bit of my keyboard click if i'm speaking in a mike if i'm testing,
then it works fine. any of you expeerenced this ishew?

I personally use Gold Wave to to all my recording and editing. Since I
despise what noise reduction does to a recording, the fact that Gold
Wave's is weak is of little consequence to me. All of my radio shows plus
any other recording I do are put together exclusively with Gold Wave. For
me personally it's a great program.

When it was first released, I purchased Sound Forge 6 with noise
 reduction
and Jim Snowbarger's scripts. I have since decided that Sound Forge was
probably a lot more program than I really needed. I also purchased
 Studio
Recorder which I really like for certain projects that I have worked on
 over
the past couple or three years. As those of you who have used it know,
Studio Recorder will never be the only sound editor anyone will ever
 use;
 it
has some very specialized features that are quite unique to it.

On my 800MHz Pentium III computer, I found Sound Forge to be a real
 resource
hog, and Jim's scripts didn't always behave as expected. No disrespect
intended, Jim, if you're reading this. My old computer's sound card was
 a
 bit ornery anyway.

I have recently purchased a Pentium 4 2.66GHz computer and have
 installed
Studio Recorder. Now for my decision, hence my request for feedback
 from
 the
list. I am looking at three options.

 1. Install Sound Forge 6 with noise reduction.
 2. Evaluate Sound Forge 8 and pay for the upgrade, approximately $150
 if I
 read it correctly.
 3. Download and evaluate Goldwave, and possibly pay $48 for yet another
 audio program.

From the standpoint of accessibility and footprint, which sound editor
 would
the majority of respondents suggest and why? Let's pretend that money
 is
 no
object, which is certainly not the case. I have just promised myself
 that
I'm not going to install and uninstall a myriad of software on this
 machine,
so I want to plan my moves carefully. Thanks for all thoughtful
 responses.

audition. I use both soundforge and goldwave as audio editors.

I agree. DC6 is indeed the best for noise reduction. I use it every
day. And to find out whether or not it's over kill in your situation,
you could have a look at the demo which they offer. It works great
with speech, no scripts required. On the down side, it does cost
around $300 US, but for my money it's still a good value for the price.

If Sound Forge is too much then perhaps Adobe Audition is too. But over
the
years I've found it (and its precursor, Cool Edit) to be excellent
especially with the scripts in Multitrack mode. It also has pretty good
Noise reduction, but for the best noise reduction with hundreds of options
and presets for various equipment then Tracertek's Diamond Cut 6 is
difficult to beat. It's fairly accessible and can clean up most things
fairly well. Again this may be overkill for you, but the choice it offers
is
staggering.

As those of you who have used it know,
Studio Recorder will never be the only sound editor anyone will ever
  use;
  it
has some very specialized features that are quite unique to it.

Thanks for all thoughtful
  responses.

 Hi Jamie,
Sounds like you have pretty much made your decision.
You felt SoundForge was a resource hog, and probably more program than you
 need.
And Studio Recorder is not the only sound editor one will ever need,
so, it sounds like you're are left with GoldWave.
The price is right, and it is probably as much sound editor as you will
 ever
need, unless you plan to do some really specialized professional
 recordings.

Yeah, Golddwave certainly isn't a bad program. I've never actually
 learned
how to edit with it, but what i do is record with Goldwave and edit
everything in sound forge. It just works best for me to have both on my
 system.
