Re: Question about the accessibility of the Kindle DX?
Hi The kindle is amazing. As a braille reader and somebody who doesn't particularly like conventional audio books it has revolutionised my reading. About 95 per cent of all the books I have looked are enabled for speech. When you first get it some sighted help might be an advantage as you have to turn on the speech function. Although I was able to do this with the help of the excellent customer service people telling me how many times to move down or up and when to press stuff. The only thing that is totally not accessible is to search for books and download them via the kindle so a 3g version isn't worth it. You should go for the wi-fi version instead. You just go to amazon on you laptop or pc and select your book you can then download it wirelessly which is free straight to your kindle. You can also put other files on there such as pdf but I don't know if these are spoken and audio books from audible.com or audible.co.uk. hope all this isn't too much waffle for you. From: Hrvoje Katic hrvojeka...@gmail.com To: skypetalk...@googlegroups.com Dear friends, Proud to release exciting new version 0.8 of SkypeTalking. This is the fourth release, and contains lots of new features and some bug fixes and improvements as well. Comparing to first release from February (SkypeTalking 0.5), this is a big step forward! Some highlights of this new release are chat monitoring, easy way for changing a mood text on the fly, improved support for file transfers, better reporting of call duration, contacts manager and SMS support. I would like to thank again to all of the contributors, as well as our second developer Gianluca who has also made a lot of work on V0.8. Now regarding the translations. The following translations still have to be updated. They will unfortunately be outdated in 0.8. These are as follows: czech, spanish, japanese, polish, portuguese and chinese. All others are updated, including the documentation. I am just unsure for russian and ukranian readme but whatsnew is translated. We also simplified the installer, and jfwapi.dll is now automatically registered, so users running 64-bit JAWS should no longer have problems with SkypeTalking not detecting JAWS. SkypeTalking can now also be launched with Alt+Ctrl+Shift+T hot key, which I didn't mentione in whatsnew, so this will be updated for the next version under 0.8 section. Everyone here on SkypeTalking mailing list was able to follow how much work we've made on this new version, and thus every feedback is welcome. We fixed some bugs, and some may be still present. The one problem that we are aware of is slower performance with some commands e.g. slow loading of contacts manager, slow reactions with end call command (alt+ctrl+shift+end) etc. Another bug is where SkypeTalking will say New SMS when that's in fact a new file transfer. I also experienced some interesting problems where some events are not spoken sometimes for some reason, so I ask myself, if they are spoken in general, then why they are sometimes ignored for no reason, even if ignoring is off. I hope that we will be able to address these bugs, but in general the program should work quite well. Here comes the complete list of new features copied from what's new document as well as the download link for both portable and installer versions of SkypeTalking 0.8. New: Added the ability to monitor active chats, in other words, opened chat windows. Use keystrokes Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Function keys F1 through F10 to set monitor on one of the last 10 active chats (press twice to bring focus to that chat window). You can then use Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Numbers for reading last 10 messages in currently monitored chat. Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+C will announce currently monitored chat, and pressing it twice will bring focus to that chat window. New: Added the ability to read and/or change your Skype mood text. Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+M will speak your current mood text, and pressing it twice will open a dialog box that lets you change your mood text. New: Alt+Ctrl+Shift+O command reports the current user online status, and when pressed twice, will report the user's current balance on a Skype credit. New: Added command for speaking the current call duration, Alt+Ctrl+Shift+D. New: Added contacts Manager, accessed with Alt+Ctrl+Shift+F11, which is the alternative to Skype contact list. It will display your contacts in a multi-select list box allowing you to select them with a spacebar and perform various actions on them such as Call, Chat or View Profile. It will also display the Last Seen information for offline contacts, which is inaccessible with some Skype versions and to some screen readers such as NVDA. The View Profile action will open a profile viewer that will allow you to review the selected contact's details by using the Tab and Shift+Tab and the arrow keys. The Call and Chat actions are self-describing. Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+F11 twice will focus the original Skype contact list. If multiple contacts are selected, then you will have options for creating a conference or a multi-chat. New: Added commands for answering and ending a call, Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Home and Alt+Ctrl+Shift+End (not on the NumPad). Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Home during a call will toggle between hold and resume for the current call. Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Home twice quickly will answer and join the incoming call to a conference. Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+End twice quickly will toggle microphone mute or unmute. New: Added support for sending SMS with SkypeTalking. The command Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S will now open an SMS wizard which will allow you to send SMS to any phone number. There are two

All you do is connect the player to a USB port on a computer that has the mp3's you want on the player. You just select them and do a ctrl-c then alt tab to your player (it should just appear as a removable disk drive) and do a ctrl-v to paste the songs onto the player. Just that easy! When you tire of what's on it, just delete them and repeat the process to put on new material anytime you wish. Using your default system voice, say RealSpeak Daniel in SAPI 5 as an example, files are generated for every artist, song and album. These are then copied to your Nano so that as you move through the menus, albums and tracks, you can hear what these tracks are. So this is quite different from having real text to speech on the device itself, and emulates what the guys at Rockbox gave us quite some time ago, but is still commendable nonetheless. In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). Because of this, JAWS will be able to work well out of the box with iTunes once we enable MSAA support for iTunes in the next public beta of JAWS 10. I have just been testing this today and am able to use the iTunes Music Store, the Radio feature and many others. Apple have done a good job here. Very good mic, and I believe Paul McCartney is a fan of it. Just one slight caution though: its a pretty low output mic and, unless you've a low noise pre-amp with plenty of gain, you're gonna have to get nice up-n-close. Then again, that's another of the virtues of the RE20; it can stand a lot of close work without poppping and thumping, but within limits. Very nice natural tone or voicing to this mic. I like a bit of acoustic or ambiance to my voice recordingand when used further away, then the RE20 needs a good 60Db of gain or more in the pre amps. Lower end mixers don't cut it in this respect. I've bought a couple off eBay where you can get them for quite a nice price. HTH. What would be the best software program to use to make this recording, and then burn a cd for shopping my demo? I'm going to assume you've invested heavily in a good--no, a very good--microphone and front-end mixer or pre-amp. Neuman not necessary, but a good Electro-Voice microphone like the RE20 is what you *really* want, especially if you *really* mean it about making good recordings. It's all about the microphone. The Schure SM57's or '58's are good, too, but ya know what? After being a confirmed Schure fan for nearly 30 years, and loving my SM57's, I tried the Re20 and was totally blown away by its very lifelike reproduction. It gave my Internet radio shows a whole new and much more likable sound, in my unhumble opinion. Audiotechnica makes nice microphones, too, but I've also been an E-V fan for probably close to 40 years, since the old 676's were popular, and they've never let me down. Cost a bit more, but if you're real serious about this, that's where you should spend your $$$. Now, as for recordingware, if you're only interested in making short voice-over-type recordings, look no further than good old Windows Sound Recorder (Programs / Acessories / Entertainment). No frills--no features,either--just start it up, and start talking. It also has a time limit of either 30 or 60 seconds, I forget which. The point is, for what you want to do, it's perfect in every way--captures your voice, costs you nothing. Of course, if you're going to have to edit and produce your own things, then we're talkin' several knotches up the scale. Goldwave, Sound Forge, CoolEdit, all good. They all do essentially the same things, but with different looks and feels. To burn your CD, there are also lots of choices, all of which do the same thing, but with different looks and feels. Easy CDDA Extractor is my personal fave, but lots of folks like CD Mate or Easy CD Creator, or even Nero Burning ROM, which, at its current version and level of sophistication, I think is way over the top for what you want to do and what you need. But it's something to graduate to. In the end, it doesn't do anything to a CD that any of the aforementioned programs do, it just offers other options (like DVD production) that you haven't mentioned you need. I'm a firm believer in focusing more on useability and functionality (which aren't the same thing at all) rather than bells and whistles I might (or might not) need down the road. OK, a little expandability is a good thing, sure, but why buy a 20-room house if I'm probably never going to have a large family? OK, so down the road you may wind up having wasted a little money on having to buy the same thing twice, once with one set of extra features and once with another, but sometimes that's the price one is required to pay when one is feeling one's way into a new line. Good luck, and let us know where we can download some samples. From what I gleaned from Brian's website, I'm not even sure whether he is still working on the scripts. He indicated that it should be possible to import podcast feeds to Juice, and since the itunes store sounds to be only partially accessible I see little reason to fight with a program that is likely to be more frustrating than not, see other message. Having said that though, I'm aware of many users who use Windows who access the software without (it seems) too much trouble, I guess its the old saying, if you want to access something and you sit down for 3 minutes to have a look at what you're trying to access then its likely that you'll find some way around the problem. How will I know if a cetain Ipod will work with rockbox? - Original Message - From: Christopher Chaltain [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2007 7:40 PM Subject: Re: Ipod and rockbox I don't want to scare you off, but it isn't going to be quite that simple. You have to make sure you buy an iPod that will work with Rockbox. When you're putting Rockbox on an MP3 player, you're replacing that MP3 players firmware. Right now those instructions are manual, and my experience, is that if you follow them scrupulously, you shouldn't have any problems. The instructions are specific to each player. Once you have Rockbox installed, you can copy a voice file over that will give you talking menus. The files and directories on your MP3 player will be spelled out or you'll just hear things like File 1, Folder 1, ..., unless you run a tool that will place files on your MP3 player recording the name of the files and folders you want spoken. Rockbox doesn't put a TTS on your MP3 player, but rather it allows the firmware to play pre-recorded sound bytes for menu entries, file names and so on. Like I said, I don't want to scare anyone off, but this isn't a plug and play solution. You'll have to be willing to do some research, some reading and ask some questions. It may take a little while. IMHO, it's worth it, and I love my iRiver H20 with Rockbox, but if people don't want to be disappointed they need to know what they're getting into. mark bishop wrote: Am I understanding this right?
