do you have any comments about the sideband reception in the synchronous to
text you on the 660 versus the 880?

Depending on whether or not your sound card had a mic boost, the volume
might be too low for a shure sm58. You can test that out. You would
definitely need phantom power for a condenser mic, unless you got a
condenser mic that could run on battery as well asphantom power.

Re: A Few Words On The Eton Satellite Radio

2016-04-27 Thread tim cumings
Dane how would you compare the synchronous detection on the satellite to
that of the techsum pl880?

On 4/27/2016 5:25 AM, Dane Trethowan wrote:

The radio arrived yesterday.

For those who wish to find out more about the new Eton Satellite note that the
Satellite in the name of the radio is spelt without the trailing E, I would never had
known this if it weren’t for my Braille Display .

List members would have read the review of the radio I posted and I agree with
pretty much every point in the review so there’s little point me going back
over old ground.

Audio out of the speaker less than 3 inches in size is nothing short of
impressive, not as good as the audio from the Tecsun PL880 but still good all
the same and of course the speaker of the PL880 is a 4 inch unit so if its
audio quality you’re looking for in a small unit then the Tecsun PL880 sets the
bar though its slightly bigger than the Eton.

The Eton is well thought out in just about every way, everything from the
double-jointed telescopic whip to the arrangement of functions.

The presets are arranged in pages, press the “Page” button and you can type in
a number of a page of presets followed by the page button to get there.

Once there just press one of the preset buttons above the keypad or tune to a
station and hold down the preset button for 3 seconds to set.

This Satellite is one of the very few radio sets around that performs well on
each and every band and I can only say its about time.

The clicks when turning the jog dial feel most satisfying so you’re not going
to accidentally turn 2 clicks instead of 1, certainly one of the best
mechanisms I’ve seen in a jog-dial.

The speed of the dial can be changed either between fast, slow or off by
repeatedly pressing the dial.

I’m extremely glad Eton chose to add an Aux-In function to the radio though
this function isn’t immediately obvious to the user, the Line-out jack can be
switched to an Aux-In jack so the user can take full advantage of the audio
powered packed into the radio through an external source.

Stereo headphones sound really nice through this radio, perhaps a little quiet
for some models of stereo but good enough for most.

so is the Satellite worth the $200 U.S. price tag? Most certainly and I have
the feeling this is the last great Shortwave radio we’re going to see for quite
some time, or perhaps this radio may well be the last we’ll see in a good line
of radios, time will tell.

Hi!

Quite some time ago I wrote to the list bemoaning the fact that a good Desktop

desktop phone had died.

Another list member suggested that I lookup the range of Polycom products, a
most useful suggestion though I found something that - whilst it wasn’t exactly
what I had in mind - it nevertheless will be of great benefit, I’m talking
about the Polycom Skype Hands Free conference speakerphone, I received it this
morning, its now set up on my desktop and is better than I ever thought
possible.

The first thing that struck me about this phone was how small it was, it could
fit easily into a jacket pocket and even comes with a carry pouch so its
completely portable.

The phone plugs into a USB port on a computer, has 2 microphones on the bottom
and a speaker at the top.

The USB stores away rolled up under the desktop stand the phone rests on.

On the front of the phone are various buttons including volume up/down, a
button to answerer/end calls and programmable buttons that can launch various
applications or tasks, you can turn your webcam on for example.

Whilst the Polycom Skype phone is at home on a desk with a desktop computer I can’t
help feeling - given the size of the device - how handy it would be for the user of a
Notebook who is in the road, often in such cases Notebook speakers and microphones
just don’t cut it when you need to use them for such things as Skype, the Polycom
Skype Conference phone will do the trick in say a hotel room, the specifications
state that the phone will pickup the voices of 4 people in a room, haven’t had the
chance to try that yet .

I'm using a Shure SM58, which I understand to be one of the most
commonly-used all-purpose vocal mics. I plug my mic into a mixer rather

mouth noises seem more evident than I expected.

Also, I wasn't aware that there were Jaws scripts for Sound Forge. I used

GoldWave works just as well. However, if you can please advise on how to

Hello everyone. I wonder if anybody can please advise.

I currently record using a broadcasting encoder and edit my content
using GoldWave. However, I'm having significant issues with the
presence of mouth clicks and the constant sounds of my Braille display
as I move from line to line (or as the cursor flashes).

I find that GoldWave's editing options are generally too weak to have
any impact or too aggressive to leave a high-quality recording. I
currently have Depopper; could this be used to remove the issues
described above (and also the hiss of room ambience)? If so, any
advice on particular settings would be appreciated. If not, can
anybody please make any other suggestions?

Many thanks, Danny

Hi. I have done voice-over work as well and I am a Goldwave user.
I am a former Sound Forge user but SF had too many bells and whistles for me. I
do all of my editing (and other folks as well) with Goldwave.
I used SF a long time ago (before they got bought by Soni) and I saw more and
more accessibility slipping away.
Once I found out about how Goldwave was really implementing accessible
features, and the fact that they seemed to actually care... I went with
Goldwave.
Just as an example. I had a sighted co-worker at the radio station who always
made these little grunts and groans after she would read a sentence. It was
very anoying to have to sift through every sentence and cut out these little
(sometimes erotic sounding sighs and moans) So, I don't think it really matters
what program your using as long as you're good at editing and you have the ear
and the patience to do it.
I don't really know if my reply is any help, but there it is anyway!
SF and Goldwave are great products. I'm not trying to start any kind of
debate...
Just saying I was a Sound Forge user many many years ago and I have been a
proud GW user too!
And, while reading this I have one more suggestion for those editors out
there. There is such a thing as over editing. Some people get too friendly with deleting,
and lose the rhythm of natural speech.
I recall listening to a Main Menu show a few years back where someone decided
to cut out all breaths and pauses, they made the presenter sound like a robot and it was
unlistenable.
So, just a heads-up!

Danny, there's no difference in editing capabilities between sound forge and
goldwave. As someone else has said, if you are picking up mouth noises and
noise from your braille display, perhaps hyou should think about swithcing to a
different microphone which might be lsee sensitive and have a different pickup
pattern. For example, a dynamic microphone with a cardioid pattern might help
in this situation.

Anybody else's thoughts on this would also be appreciated. Of course
buying SF would be a considerable outlay, but it is in the cause of
professional work, so I guess it depends whether there's a significant
advantage to it or not.

Also, as previously mentioned, I currently record my audio via the Sam

or would it be better to simply do everything in an audio editing

The manual is very confusing to me. I prefer step by step instructions as to
how to do various tasks. Information is scattered throughout and I don't know
which items I should look at in order to accomplish my requirements.

Some of the screens in the program are not labeled so I was not able to figure

I realize it would be a time consuming project to write out all the steps, but
perhaps someone can point the way so I can figure out how to accomplish these

And finally, the MPX-100 has an Aux-in port but what doesn’t?

You've got the right idea, go into the View menu and bring up Voice

were left, press return on the desired entry in the history.

If you tab around here you'll see the usual content of the window,
chat, call and a play button, press space on this and the message will
start playing through your selected output device.

There's a delete button which you can press to delete the message.

When completed press ctrl-w to close the Window.

Hope this helps and I hope I explained it correctly.

MX-P100 puts the Jawbone Jambox to absolute shame.

Firstly, the MX-P100 is Bluetooth 3.0 compatible and - whilst not the quality
of Bluetooth 4.0 - it does mean that the Hands Free Speakerphone function can
take HD Voice calls and issue commands to SIRI if you're planning to use this
Speaker with an iPhone, iPad etc.

Bluetooth pairing is easy enough, just select the MX-P100 device from the
Bluetooth devices list or - if you have a MFC compatible phone - wipe the phone
over the top of the MX-P100 for instant bluetooth pairing, the MX-P100
remembers 8 paired devices.

The The sound of the MX-P100 is more natural sounding than that from the Jawbone Jambox
which a friend of mine described as being Too Boxy, I agree with his
description.

Separation of sound between speakers - even though the MX-P100 is only 7 inches
from left to right - is there to be heard and I suspect that Yamaha have used a
bit of DSP technology here to present the effect.

Construction is rugged, in fact this unit can be used outdoors and is weather
proof.

The MX-P100 can be used as an external sound device for a Windows or Mac
computer, just connect the MX-P100 to a USB port on your computer and select it
from the devices list to enjoy high quality sound, a perfect companion for
Notebooks and Laptops.

Your iPhone or tablet have its battery charged from the internal battery of the
MX-P100 which adds to the convenience and flexibility of the package.

The MX-P100 features a voice guidance and prompting system which is available
in multiple languages including English.

I I have advice for those who jave a Jawbone Jambox, throw the thing away as
the Yamaha MX-P100 sounds so much better and is far more functional, even built
better. For those who are considering the purchase of a Jawbone Jambox then
don't go near it, not only is the Yamaha MC-P100 better but its nearly half the
price of the Jawbone Jambox.

Here's a review I found on the MX-P100 though it does seem a little dated as
some of the features and functions I've mentioned aren't listed in the review
so perhaps a firmware update has come along since the original review linked to
here was written.

Hi,

I aggree that on-board sound systems can be pretty good.

Comparisons between different sound cards, if supported by
specifications are invaluable. If not, then an element of subjectivity
takes us in to an area where opinions are only really valuable to the
holder of these opinions. So here are some of my opinions.

I used to be happy with my audiofile 24/96. There were occasional
problems with crackle on one channel, this would go away if the system
were rebooted. I suspect that this was a driver issue, but never really
got behind the problem.

I used this card with XP, and more recently windows 7. The control
pannel, delivered with the latest
revision of the drivers became unusable with a screen reader, However
when set up, the card behaved well enough, considering that the price
also has dropped from the time when I first bought mine, some 8 years
ago. Still a good card, and gave good latency when used with Reeper.

Then I changed the computer, and bought a Dell optiplex, I5 processor, 8
GB ram, and 1 TB HD.

The onboard audio device, a real tek High definition audio system, is
quite frankly, the worst audio device I have ever worked with.

Dell's control pannel, is partly accessible, but it is hit and miss when
changing settings. There are settings in the control pannel, that are
not exposed to the windows mixer, so you have to use it.

I couldn't use the audiofile 24/96 because the optiplex uses PCIE slots
only. The audiofile, is available only as a PCI board, and although
there are converters from PCIe to PCI, the profile of the 24/96 excludes
it from this adaption so this sound card is now in an older dell, which
will run only as long as the capacitors hold out on the board, and they
are blowing so life is limited.

This is why I am now looking to use the audio interfaces from tascam.

I already have a US-122-A B but this device has no windows 7 drivers.
shame.

So I am looking at the current tascam range, similar to the device I
already own, and this replacement should cost about 80 UK pounds.

Then we should be good to go as they say.

Thanks,

Joe

I've worked out how to Mix tracks I think as the below sample will show,
interested in comments.

Before I give you the link to the MP3 file however, let's take a basic tour of
BossJock.

When Bossjock is opened you're presented with a series of cart players - how
many appear are entirely up to you - next to each on the right is a series of
faders and so on.

At the bottom of the screen are various different elements, an area for taking notes, microphone trigger/lock
buttons, a record button to either record your broadcast or send it live to the Internet/Network and then a
series of tabs which are labeled Studio, Recordings and Settings, all 3
are obvious.

In the Recordings tab is where you import your music/jingles from Dropbox, your iTunes
music library, iCloud or other Wi-Fi device on your network, these can then be loaded into your

Hi!

My Zoom H1 should be here any day now, my original recorder developed a
fault and it probably wasn't worth the money to get repaired so I
ordered a

replacement.

I also read a review of the Zoom H2N which has been around for a little

Does anyone on list have experience with one of these recorders?

Okay, I can help you with the 9 key, that's the control for the muting
threshold so here's what you do assuming you want to turn that off which I'd
imagine you do.

Hold down the 9 key for 4 seconds and then rotate any of the tuning knobs
anti clockwise for say half a turn. Then press the 9 key again and that
should do the trick.

You also may wish to turn off noise reduction, this is done by holding down
the 6 key for 4 seconds.

activate some of the hidden features, however -- holding down the 9
key had no effect whatsoever.

One nice feature is if you are using ssb the band controls cycle through
the ham bands, if you switch to normal the band selector cycles through
the broadcast ones.

Dane Trethowan grtd...@internode.on.net wrote:

I've had the radio for 8 hours and I'm utterly delighted with my
purchase, here are a few observations I've made about the radio.

Firstly this set is not a killer set when it comes to Medium wave
sensitivity though its far from dreadful so if you're looking for a good
performing AM set and not bothered with Short Wave, SSB and CW then your
money would be perhaps better spent on the CCrane 2E AM/FM radio. The
Pl880 is squarely aimed at the traveller and AM reception through this
radio should be good enough in 99% of cases but its on the Short Wave,
SSB/CW and on FM that this receiver shines.

Having said all that however the audio quality on the AM broadcast band
is far better than a lot of similar sized portables on the market thanks
to the selectible Band width filter which can be adjusted between 2.4 and
9KHZ thus giving superb quality for audio on AM stations which permit
it - most in Australia do smile.

Short Wave reception his hot on the built-in telescopic whip which is
reasonably long and very thin at the top end so be careful with it.

The PL880 charges from a USB socket and takes around 3 hours to charge
the lythium-ion battery.

Sound from the internal speaker is something which puts similar portable
radios of the same size to absolute shame, in particular the Sony
ICF-sw7600G and GR sets sound like paper compared to the PL880.

2 tuning knobs are presented, one for fast and one for slow tuning, they
have a nice thick smooth feel to them, just like tuning an older 60s
style analogue radio.

More notes to come as I play and explore.

I can only hope that this headset is better constructed than the Logitech

cable, poor quality ear pads and so on, the set literally fell to bits and
towards the end it was held together with packing tape.

Anyway as most of you will probably know, the H800 can either work with your

Hi!

I'm sending this in a separate reply to the original eMail on this
subject,
in my original reply I sent a link to the tutorial which describes how
Total

Recorder can be set up to record Skype and other Internet/VOIP Telephony.

In this eMail I'd like to refer to another way of recording Skype calls,
if
you have a Mac you can use Audio Hijack Pro, all you need do is run the
App
and select the Record From Skype template and tweak to your
requirements.

When the Hijack mode from Record To Skype is enabled a Skype call will
be

recorded whenever Audio Hijack Pro detects any audio activity from Skype.

Further to this Audio Hijack Pro is fully compatible with Apple Automator
Scripts and workflows therefore offering further enhancement and
automation

of the Skype recording process, you could for example have a Skype call
recorded an automatically put into an iTunes playlist, have the call
logged

or archived etc, its all down to your imagination.

Automator Scripts and workflows are easily put together through the Apple
Automator Application which forms part of OSX Mavericks and earlier OSX
Operating Systems.

Joe i'd recommend total recorder with gw connect, because the nice thing
is you can set it up so that you and the person you are talking to are
recorded in separate channels, so if you have to do any level matching later

One more thing which can help is a mic shock mount, which should isolate

Hope some of that helps.

hello I am a blind pc user, I own a blue yetti pro, I use it on the
stand
that it came with, and it is a very good mic. my problem is that I have
a

tower under my pc, with a five inch fan that is on top of the pc and it
blows air up. when my mic is on I hear the fan of the tower, but that
is not

the problem.
like I said because my tower is under my desk and the mic sits on top
of the

desk I hear a humming coming from my desk, I think it's the fan that is
blowing under the desk. now when I take the mic off the desk the
humming
goes away, so I think that the humming is coming from air hitting
bottom of
desk. now I bought a shock mount, but the hummming is still there with
the
shock mount. and again once I lift the mic off the desk the humming
goes

away.
is there anything I could do for this. some one suggested a boom arm,
but if
I get one will I have to take the mic off the stand to attach it to
boom

arm. any suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks so much.

Tim,

You could end the task in task manager.

control-alt-delete should bring up the task manager, use the tab key to
get to the applications tab, then find the application totalrec.exe or
what ever it is called, then end task.

Shouldn't need to do this, but it will unload total rec.

Hi!

Sampling all my tapes before they're finally thrown into the recycle bin,
need to make room smile.

The following is a NPR production of the War Of The Worlds play, a cover
of

the original broadcast in 1938.

The broadcast was played on ABC FM here in Australia.

Managed to record it though conditions in those days weren't like anything
we know today, was using a cassette deck with Dolby C though I do think
the

results are perfectly acceptable.

1. set your player's output to line 1
2. turn on the VAC control pannal
3. open audio repeater MME
3a. under wave in choose line 1
3b. under wave-out choose the sound card you want to listen from
3c. set priority to real time
3d. click start
4. open skype options alt t in the skype window
5. arrow to audio
6. use pagedown to locate line 1
Now you are set.
Note: when I set the microphone in skype I pagedown then arrow down so
that

my main microphone is still in the mix in case you wish to talk you will
only need to arrow between microphones.

Sorry for those who are already in the know regarding to the Switch Sound
File Converter application, I've been using it on the Windows PC for a
while so decided to try the Mac version. I was impressed with what I
found so decided to buy it.

The converter is totally accessible though in parts I had to route the
mouse to various buttons and use Vo-Shift-Space to press them but not a
huge problem.

You can use Switch to extract audio from video files which some on the
list may find extremely useful.

NCH Software are offering bundles of Applications and Utilities on sale
right now so its your big chance to make some huge savings.

One of the other Applications I recommend from this company is the
excellent Prism video File Converter, its the most stable I've seen and
offers more format and settings choices than any other video converter
I've used both for Mac and Windows.

Hello. Which editor provides not only equalizer functions but also speed

faster like an algorithm for speed reading, but one which will change
the pitch as in the case of old cassettes running a shade too slow, etc.
Also, equalizer functions to brighten up old tapes as well is needed.
Does wave pad, and the cheaper version of Sound forge, (is that sound

Tim

I tried to install it by removing the original screw that holds the yeti in
place. Thisis what I understand from what you are saying.

But that iron bracket only has a hole on one side. Also the bracket is just
a few millimetres too small so that you cannot fit it inside the bracket to
turn the screw through the bracet into the microphone itself.

Am I doing something wrong?

Tim

I have it screwed to the back of the flat stand but it seems not to be very
sturdy?
