Attached is a patch that reliably segfaults Pd.

Message:
ad indentation: true, i really have to fix this once! are there any coding
guidelines available (preferrably within the pd/ directory) that explicits
the correct formatting?

ad confusion: hey, i just copied the original code (;-)) into a function
that can be called multiple times

anyhow, it would be good to have it fixed in _some_ way (so please do hack
on this later)

--

Comment By: Miller Puckette (millerpuckette)
Date: 2011-07-30 22:47

Message:
This is rather confusingly written (and badly indented)... I'd suggest
having makefilename_scanformat()
simply scan through the string in one pass. I can hack on this later if
necessary.

Message:

specifiers, and if so, complains and refuses to work.
this effectively prevents the crash (though it still does not enable

the patch applies to todays git master.
raised priority since it is a crasher bug.

Comment By: IOhannes m zmölnig (zmoelnig)
Date: 2011-07-28 12:46

Message:
while the docs are a bit confusion about this, [makefilename] really can
only handle a _single_ format specifier;

so using a format-string like %s-%s is illegal.

however, Pd should never segfault

Summary: iemgui lib uses 32-bit only .x%x canvas id

Initial Comment:
In order to support 64-bit environments, the canvas ID format needs to be
changed from .x%x to .x%lx. This has been done throughout Pd and in most
externals. iem/iemgui still has some use of the old 32-bit only .x%x. To fix,
just replace .x%x with .x%lx

Pd version 0.42.5 extended

rvbap crash pd if define-loudspeaker is set to 2 dimensions.

Easy to reproduce: open rvbap help, click on define_loudspeaker 2 and change a
parameter in rvbap.

Summary: tooltips part 3: the saga continues

Initial Comment:
Here's a new angle on the tooltips idea that adds three somewhat related
functions to Pd:
1) Autotips, available from the Edit menu. Parses help patches on the fly
when the mouse enters an object/xlet. (Works the same with abstractions, too.)
2) Manual tips through a tip canvas method.
3) An echo canvas method, which just passes a message to a canvas without
displaying it. (Useful in conjunction with the get method from my other
patch, and probably other contexts as well.)

It's all done with some canvas bindings in tcl and a few canvas methods, so
neither t_class nor t_widgetbehavior is touched. However, if it's desirable to
add Enter and Leave widgetbehaviors at a later date, it should be possible
without changing any of the code in this patch.

Hopefuly I diff'd correctly, against vanilla 0.43.0. (Works for me in Fedora
15...)

Message:
attached is a patch that checks whether there are multiple format
specifiers, and if so, complains and refuses to work.
this effectively prevents the crash (though it still does not enable
multiple format specifiers)

the patch applies to todays git master.
raised priority since it is a crasher bug.

Comment By: IOhannes m zmölnig (zmoelnig)
Date: 2011-07-28 12:46

Message:
while the docs are a bit confusion about this, [makefilename] really can
only handle a _single_ format specifier;

so using a format-string like %s-%s is illegal.

however, Pd should never segfault

The patch should apply cleanly against Pd 0.43 and does not affect the

is an updated netsend-help.pd with instructions regarding the new second
outlet.

This patch differs from one submitted to pd-dev mailing list in that it adjusts
changes to pd.tk to reflect additions that have been made to it since (some
chunks apply with fuzz enabled but they should all apply rather cleanly). It
should be applied against latest Pd-extended 0.42.5 svn branch. NB: I have not

Initial Comment:
Hi,
while building pd-extended rsynced from the auto-build farm, on Archlinux (gcc
4.6.1) with :
cd packages/linux_make
edit Makefile to replace -march=386 with -march=i686
make install
the gem_filmGMERLIN.so and gem_filmQT4L.so don't get copied in the extra/Gem
build dir, leading to pix_film fail. A manual copy of the files fixes that.
Cheers,
Charles

Message:
Ok, I added this to Pd-extended. Be very careful to not copy things that
are not being translated. I.e. if DSP is going to remain DSP, then it
should look like this:

msgid DSP
msgstr

NOT like this:

msgid DSP
msgstr DSP

There are a number of reasons to do this. This is the way the PO system
expects, msgstr means use the original text. Also, having the DSP,
etc. duplicated caused a weird bug where the Log menu on the Pd Window was
not showing up which took me about an hour to figure out :(. And lastly,
it will help your translation, since tools like POedit will show you which
lines have not been translated.

for Max/MSP
2. Bonk template reading/writing correctly works from Max/MSP.
3. learn was not using its argument, so every hit was being interpreted as a

Summary: [bugfix] GOP leaving zombie objects after disabling GOP

Initial Comment:
Apologies for previous post without logging in. Please disregard the previous
report and use this one instead.

Following applies to pd-extended and pd 0.42.5. Open attached gop_test.pd patch
and do the following:

1) right-click on [pd something] and click on properties
2) check enable gop option and apply (*do not* close properties window)
3) uncheck enable gop option and apply
4) you should see zombified GOP items that were not properly erased, in some
cases the original pd something will be impossible to open by clicking on the
object with tk errors being reported to the console

This to the best of my knowledge together with other patches I submitted before
via mailing list should take care of all GOP bugs I am currently aware of.

Summary: [bugfix] gop patch name uneditable after disabling gop

Initial Comment:
Last lingering GOP bug (after all previous GOP bugfixes that I submitted have
been applied). Namely, when:

1) open a new patch and create [pd something]
2) right-click on object's properties, enable both GOP and hide text options
and click on OK/Apply
3) the object will revert to its original object-like appearance and will be
open-able but its name (text) will not be editable
4) right-clicking on its properties shows that both hide text and GOP are
still enabled

This is because disabling GOP function does not reset hidetext variable.
Following patch fixes this.

Comment By: Jonathan Wilkes (jancsika1)
Date: 2011-07-07 12:46

Message:
There's still a problem:
5) Uncheck hide text, then uncheck Graph on parent. Now text is not
editable.

Alternatively, unchecking Graph on parent without unchecking hide text
will not revert the subpatch to an object box.

Test with Pd 0.43.0 on Maverick.

this applies (only) to 0.43.

this obsoletes ico's gop_patch_20101115 (which i leave here for

For detailed info please see my post to pd-dev list
http://www.mail-archive.com/pd-dev@iem.at/msg08015.html

This patch differs from one submitted to pd-dev mailing list in that it adjusts
changes to pd.tk to reflect additions that have been made to it since (some
chunks apply with fuzz enabled but they should all apply rather cleanly). It
should be applied against latest Pd-extended 0.42.5 svn branch. NB: I have not
had a chance to do the porting to 0.43 as I am still using 0.42.5.

Message:
These patches should be updated to apply to the HEAD of the pure-data git.
Also, its easiest to manage if all changes are in a single patch file.
git format-patch works nicely for that.

Message:
Looks worth including, but with GOP bugs, I'm currently waiting to see what
Miller is going to do with GOP restructuring before tackling this stuff. I
still don't really have a grasp of the GOP code, so I don't know what the
repercussions of GOP-related patches are. From my experience, one little
simple fix causes some weird behavior elsewhere.

Comment By: IOhannes m zmölnig (zmoelnig)
Date: 2011-02-08 05:24

Message:
the problem only applies to Pd-extended (hence i re-assign it to hans), as
with pd-vanilla, all msg- and obj-boxes are transparent (non-filled), thus
there is no real problem with the layer-depth of cords vs objects.

furthermore, i actually fail to see the problem anyhow: why do you think
it is a bug if the cord is drawn on top of the object?
isn't this what you usually get anyhow?

Since a number of users have reported that 0.43 is not yet production

is an even better version of the scrolling code and supporting features in

Summary: use FILENAME_MAX for all filenames, since its MAXPDSTRING

Initial Comment:
On Windows, FILENAME_MAX is much smaller than MAXPDSTRING, so I replaced
MAXPDSTRING with FILENAME_MAX everywhere I could find that is related to
filenames. FILENAME_MAX is a POSIX standard macro for defining the max length
of a complete filename.

The current situation could result in crashes on Windows.

I'm not sure but I don't think Windows should have trouble trying to open

Summary: fix Windows non-starting

Initial Comment:
Removed bizarre 'k' character in 'package' command, causing Windows to not
start. This was in the proc get_config_win in tcl/pd_guiprefs.tcl. My
smallest patch ever, literally changing one character ;)

Summary: make slipdec reassemble arbitrary packages

Initial Comment:
current slipdec doesn't work if the SLIP encoded package is not presented as a
single list
(which kind of defeats the idea of SLIP, which is to paketize a _stream_ of
data)

with the attached patch, [slipdec] is able to decode a stream even if it was
[1, 192 2, 3 4, 5 192, 6, 192(

before applying and committing the patch, please have a close look at it.
for now, i just disabled the valid output (because it doesn't make so much
sense anyhow, a SLIP stream is almost always valid)
i know think that the flag could indicate whether there is still data waiting
in the queue (and is updated after each message received)

Maybe it should output the size of the queue, so zero would mean a complete

Valid was supposed to mean that all the input was equivalent to bytes,
i.e. no floating point, symbols, etc.

Summary: make clocks thread safe

Initial Comment:
when writing threaded externals, i often find myself wanting Pd to call a
callback from the main thread, depending on the other thread's state.

e.g. when doing asynchronous data acquisition, i want to notify Pd when new
data has arrived, so it can be delivered in the main thread.

the obvious way is to use t_clock, and registers a new clock_delay() event from
within the helper-thread; Pd will then callback in the next tick.
unfortunately the clock_set(),... methods are not thread safe, possibly leading
to corruption of the clock_setlist when accessing them simultaneously.

one workaround is to use the global sys_lock(), but i find this to terribly
slow down the entire Pd process, esp. when i have to call sys_lock() multiple
times before ticks. that's most likely because sys_lock() locks about
everything.
an alternative i used in the past, is to have a special (mutex-protected) flag,
indicating whether i already have a clock running that is waiting to be called
back from the main thread.

however, i find this quite complicated

therefore, i propose to make the clock_delay/clock_set/clock_unset methods
threadsafe, by internally maintaining a separate mutex that solely protects the
clock_setlist.

Message:
just a few final words:

the problem i describe can well be solved with sys_lock()
however this creates a Big Kernel Lock, potentially affecting
performance.

my proposal is to use finer grained locking, to avoid problems with the
BIG syslock.

Comment By: IOhannes m zmölnig (zmoelnig)
Date: 2011-06-20 13:19

Message:
i have also written a small external that illustrates the problem.
find it in the threadclock.tgz archive, and compile it.

the object will create a number of threads (use the argument to specify
how many threads you want);
each thread will sleep for a short time (100ms or so), and then call
clock_delay() to wake up the object from the main thread.

sooner or later, this will crash Pd; using my path it won't

Summary: Big system lock won't be released in some circumstances

Initial Comment:
i'm currently working on some threading support in Gem, where i use
sys_lock()/sys_unlock() to protect my calls to clock_delay().

while testing i noticed that the syslock was never unlocked by Pd in certain
circumstances:
- i was using no audio (SCHED_AUDIO_NONE)
- my patch used up quite a lot of CPU (rendering a teapot without openGL
acceleration)

in my worker-thread i called sys_lock(), and i never got beyond this point.

after a lot of searching i found the reason:
in the mainloop, Pd will call sys_unlock() ONLY if it has a valid
audio-backend OR it has idletime (unlock while we are idle)

in my case, neither was true (the latter, because one of the cores was busy
rendering a teapot)

this is unexpected behaviour since:
- i'm using multiple threads to get more performance out of my multicore
system; if i moved all the work done by the helper thread into the main thread
(to avoid the use of syslock) performance would be dramatically worse
- when i chose an(y) audio-backend, my helper threads will be unlocked, even
though using audio could be expected to take even more time to calculate (hence
an additional thread can be seen as even more undesireable when running under
full load)

suggested solutions:
- when no audio-backend is used, the syslock should be unlocked/locked, so
waiting threads have a chance to get scheduled
AND/OR
- get rid of the big system lock; in my special case it would be enough to have
a thread-safe version of clock_delay() see [1] for a patch that implements this

attached is a patch (against current git) that unlocks the syslock for a tiny
period (and immediately locks it again) when using no audio backend, so waiting
threads get a chance to be scheduled by the OS.

Message:
Ok, I added this to Pd-extended. Be very careful to not copy things that
are not being translated. I.e. if DSP is going to remain DSP, then it
should look like this:

msgid DSP
msgstr

NOT like this:

msgid DSP
msgstr DSP

There are a number of reasons to do this. This is the way the PO system
expects, msgstr means use the original text. Also, having the DSP,

Initial Comment:
After a long research about this error: : no such object I found that
apparently it is due to accented characters in the file path. I mean, when you
open a patch that is located in a folder that has accented characters in its
name, the puredata console says error: : no such object. It doesn't help
debugging other bugs. the Find last error menu didn't help on this one.
this error doesn't appear when there is accented characters in the patch file
name itself.
I use PC - WIndows 7.

Summary: (Mac OS): discard changes? dialog not shown, can't close

Initial Comment:
On Mac OS, steps to reproduce:

1. Open a patch that uses some abstraction
2. Click on an instance of an abstraction to open it (or right-click, open)
3. Change something in the abstraction and don't save.
4. Close the abstraction's window
5. Close Pd

Expected: the abstraction's window should open and the dialog saying Discard
changes in ...? should be shown. You should be able to click on Yes to
continue and close Pd

Observed: the abstraction's window does show up but the dialog is not shown. Pd
waits for your answer but you cannot say either yes or not because the dialog
with the button is not shown.

Maybe it's hidden somewhere and you may be able to force it to show up but I
haven't found any way and I don't have much experience with Mac OS.

This does not happen 100% of the times, but quite often.

This means you cannot close Pd without saving changes (unless you kill it),
which is pretty critical.

The issue has existed for years. I thought I had reported it but I can't find
any bug report about it. I don't know if it's fixed in 0.43. It's 0.42.6 here.

Summary: console scroll bar broken on Mac OS

Initial Comment:
The scroll bar of Pd's console doesn't work properly on Mac OS:

1. On the bottom. where usually the up and down-arrow buttons are located,
there is only the up-arrow button
2. If you click on the scrollbar's cursor and drag it, the scroll bar cursor's
movement are out of sync with the mouse cursor's movement. The bar's cursor
tends to drift upwards compared to the mouse, and the offset is accumulated.

Summary: pd-extended: magic glass not 64 bit clean

Initial Comment:
The magicGlass_new and magicGlass_setCanvas functions in g_magicglass.c both
take an int parameter c which gets assigned to the x_c member of the
t_magicGlass struct. However, in g_canvas.c a t_canvas* is being passed for
this parameter, cast to int. This doesn't work on 64 bit systems (or if it
does, you're just lucky) because an int is 32 bit and a pointer 64 bit.

Suggested fix: Make x_c a t_glist* and fix up the uses of this member in
g_magicglass.c accordingly. Make the c parameter of magicGlass_new and
magicGlass_setCanvas a t_glist* as well, and fix up the invocation of
magicGlass_new in g_canvas.c accordingly.

I'd also suggest to move the declaration of the t_magicGlass struct into
g_magicglass.h. Currently it is replicated in g_magicglass.c and g_canvas.c
which is error-prone.

Summary: discard changes message messed up

Initial Comment:
Sometimes, when I run a patch with a few abstractions, and I edit the main
patch and I open and edit some of the abstractions and don't save, when I try
to close the main patch, I get inconsistent discard changes on XXX? messages.
For example:

1) Let's have a patch Main.pd which contains instances of an abstraction A.pd
and an abstraction B.pd.
2) I open only Main.pd. I modify it without saving. I right-click on [A] and
select open, I edit the A abstraction, close it and don't save. Same for B
3) I close the main patch by clicking the X button of its window

Result:
- i get a dialog Discard changes on Main.pd? (Main.pd's window is brought to
front) I say Yes
- I get a dialog Discard changes on A.pd? (A-pd's window is brought to
front)I say Yes
- I get a dialog Discard changes on Main.pd? (again!!) but B.pd's windos is
actually broght to front.

This is just an example. I can't provide a patch that sistematically reproduces
the issue, it's intermittent. I guess it depends in which order you open,
close, save, etc.

Pd Vanilla 0.42.5 on Ubuntu here.

Summary: Pd clases with windows explorer?

Initial Comment:
Hi,

My current system is XP, Pd-ext 0.42, Pd-van 0.43.
I think this issue always happened a bit for many years, but now I'm putting in
a report. I think Pd clashes with windows explorer, making it behave a bit
weird at some points. I can't give a concrete cause-effect list, but here are
some of the symptoms that happen only when Pd is on.

Both Pd versions
- If pd is on, the task bar and explorer in general (opening folders, ...)
behaves slower. Sometimes is necessary to wait up to a minute for a new window
to open.
This happens more often with Pd is on + a file menu within pd (open, save, ...)
is also showing

Pd-vanilla
Sometimes (for sure after a fresh installation), when I start Pd vanilla some
system settings get overwritten. So far I noticed:
- the window open/close animation gets activated (this one has been happening
for years)
- my tablet's settings get mixed up: velocity, position, ... (this one is
recent)

I imagine this should be a Tcl/Tk problem?

Best,

Joo Pais

pix_image causes a cpu load of ~4% per instance when thread loading is enabled.

Debian Squeeze

Pd-extended 0.42.5

Since thread loading is enabled by default, patches with multiple pix_image
created on other systems (where this issue does not exist) can not be used
without modification. If the pix_image cpu load issue is common for Linux, the
object should initialize with threadMess(0) as long as the issue is not solved.

t_magicGlass struct.

[PD-dev] [ pure-data-Feature Requests-3312805 ] Add pd-extended GUI improvements to pd-vanilla

Summary: Add pd-extended GUI improvements to pd-vanilla

Initial Comment:
It would be nice to have the following GUI improvements from pd-extended in
vanilla:

- The pd-extended color scheme for objects, inlets, outlets and wires. IMHO
these give important visual cues which make it easier to work with Pd,
especially for beginners.

- An option in the Edit menu to toggle autopatching. It's very convenient if
the user can change this on the fly while running Pd.

- jsarlo's magic glass. In edit mode this allows you to point the mouse at a
wire to peek at the data passing through the wire. This is toggled with a
corresponding option in the Edit menu. This is also very convenient, and IMHO a
great tool for learning Pd.

I've compiled a patch from the corresponding 3 changesets in the patch_series
branch of the pd-extended git repository, which applies cleanly on top of the
pure-data git repository (as of 2011-04-19). I've also fixed some 64 bit
related issues with magic glass, this is included in the patch.

If you open an instance of an abstraction, then Save

Strange, I looked into this. It seems that just the title bar isn't being
updated, but the patch does think of itself in the new location. [getdir]
will show the new location. It seems that when canvas_rename() is called
inside of canvas_savetofile(), the directory is not yet updated, when
things get to canvas_reflecttitle(), and therefore canvas_getdir() returns
the old location rather than the new one. Since this is now cosmetic, I'll
leave it for another day.

Save As... means write out a new file. A new file means a
new class. The instance that started this process remains
the old class, therefore is no longer related to this new class.

This means its inconsistent to have this instance remain as
the original class.

Also, from a usability perspective, it makes things much
more coherent. In every other app that I use, when I do
Save As..., that current view changes to the new file. It
does not remain on the old file.

I'm note sure if that's a bug, though I agree, that it's
confusing. But if you open an instance of an abstraction and
save that under a different name, this action doesn't affect
the name of the abstraction's instance as it is used in the
parent patch: This one will stay the same. If you want to
use your newly saved abstraction you need to rename the
instance to the new name as well first.

if this file is opened as a toplevel patch (via File-Open) and you then turn

if [outlet~] is missing, Pd will give an error about DSP-loop detected and

Date: 2011-05-25 15:36

Message:
hunting down the bug i found that it crashes in the fill borrowed outputs
loop around d_ugen.c:1064.
the crash happens because dc_iosigs==NULL (due to the patch being run as
toplevel ) and dc_noutlets==dc_ninlets==1 (because there is inlet~ and
outlet~).

this combination leads to an access of (*dc_iosigs)-s_borrowedFrom which
is invalid (dc_iosigs==NULL)

the attached patch tries to fix the underlying problem, by forcing
dc_noutlets=dc_ninlets=0 if the toplevel flag is set.

if Pd starts the jackd automatically (which is the case if no jackd is running

is sufficient to start e.g. qjackctrl), quitting Pd becomes weird:
- the pd process terminates
- pd-gui still hangs around
- pd-watchdog starts signalling (as the non-existant pd process doesn't reply
anymore)

Summary: trigonometric functions lack method for bang on left inlet

Initial Comment:
Trigonometric functions, or at least [atan2] and [sin], lack a method for bang
on the left inlet. I would expect them to follow the universal convention for
binary math functions, that is, bang on left inlet recomputes the operation
with the last value received.

Summary: type-punned pointers break strict aliasing rules

Initial Comment:
the current development version of Pd (well, assuming the gui-rewrite 0.43
branch is it) stiill suffers from a lot type-punned pointers that break strict
aliasing rules (and would better be replaced by unions).

See here for some rationale
http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-dev/2007-10/009677.html

Some command line hackery to print out some stats:
8
claude@zebimus:~/code/pure-data_branches_pd-gui-rewrite_0-43$ make
CFLAGS=-fstrict-aliasing -Wall 21 | grep warning.*strict | sort | sed s|:
warning.*|| | uniq | sed s|:| | | sort -V | ( oldsrc=none ; while read src
lineno ; do if [ $src = $oldsrc ] ; then echo $lineno ; else echo $src $lineno
; fi ; oldsrc=$src ; done ) | sed s|\(._.*\)|;\1| | tr \n; \n | tail
-n+2 echo
d_array.c 61 727
d_ctl.c 110 145 327
d_delay.c 88
d_filter.c 72 174 305 307 390 577 810 812
d_math.c 87 101 109

998 1095 1106
8
(That's a table of files with line numbers that exhibit the problem)

While replacing (*(inttype *)floatvalue) with a (union {inttype i; floattype
f; } u;) is almost trivial, it's slightly less trivial to do it the right way.

The right way involves taking into account that Pd can be now be compiled to
use double instead of float, so you need a different sized inttype for each
case

The later 32bit bit-twiddling will probably break in that case anyway, so maybe
better to have a compile-time check if it will work, and if not then do it the
naive way...).

Message:
i just stumbled upon the type-punning problem, as [tabwrite~] would not
write the data i expected.

so i tried to fix the problem, with the following patches:
0001-implement-PD_BIGORSMALL-with-unions.patch
   re-implemented PD_BIGORSMALL and PD_BADFLOAT using static inline
functions that use unions rather than typecasts; the performance is
slightly worse (about 16%), but then i prefer slow code to broken code

0002-replace-float-int-casts-with-unions.patch
replaces the remaining typecasts in d_math.c and d_soundfiler.c with
unions

0003-cleanup-soundfile-parsers-reduce-number-of-casts.patch
claude's script also showed up some warnings in the soundfile parsers
where it complained about things like ((t_wavechunk *)buf)-wc_id[0]
which i have now replaced by a single cast from char[] to (e.g.)
t_wavechunk; i believe that this makes the code more readable (no need to
do the typecast in my head), and shuts up compiler warnings which are
usually indicators of problematic code anyhow.

it would be great if these could get included in 0.43.1;
i will definitely include them in the debian packages, as those are
currently broken due to the type-punning problem.

might be that 0002 and 0003 should be applied in the right order (as both
modify d_soundfiler.c)

Summary: comport hangs Pd and eats 100% CPU when port disconnected

Initial Comment:
Steps to reproduce:

1) Connect a serial over USB device, such as an Arduino
2) Create a [comport] and send it the appropriate open message to connect to
the device:

[open N(
 |
[comport]

3) When the connection is established, unplug the USB device.

Pd will start eating 100% CPU and will hang. You won't even be able to close
it, you have to kill the process.

This happens systematically here.

Pd Extended 0.42.5, Ununtu 10.04

I know you're not supposed to unplug a com port without closing, but Pd
shouldn't hang.

Summary: make sure patches get written to disk

Initial Comment:
there is a very long standing (reported for pd-0.36cvs!) bug-report in debian
(debian-bug#203288), claiming:
snip
pd: no error given when saving to a filesystem that is full

When trying to save to a filesystem that is full, a 0 byte file is
written and no error is given.
/snip

with Pd-0.43, i get an error when saving too big patches on the filsystem in
most cases (great), but some (e.g. creating a new empty patch, save that on the
full fileystem) still reports everything as correct, even though only a 0 byte
file gets written.

a simple solution (attached) is to call fflush() at the end of binbuf_write()
and check it's return value for success.

Initial Comment:
The following abstractions:

rev1~, rev2~, rev3~, hilbert~

are included in Pd Vanilla for Windows; they are located in the extra folder.
However they are missing (or maybe they are not where they are expected to be)
in the Linux version, or at least in the package for Ubuntu.

Summary: some abstractions are missing in Vanilla for Ubuntu

Initial Comment:
The following abstractions:

rev1~, rev2~, rev3~, hilbert~

are included in Pd Vanilla for Windows; they are located in the extra folder.
However they are missing (or maybe they are not where they are expected to be)
in the Linux version, or at least in the package for Ubuntu.

Pd Vanilla 0.42.5 on Ubuntu.

Initial Comment:
Pd 0.43 Ubuntu Maverick

1. Create a msg box.
2. Turn caps lock on.
3. Type FOO
4. Select FOO by click dragging with the mouse.
5. Type ctrl-c

Bug: FOO gets cut instead of copied.

(Note: Steps 2 and 3 are actually interchangeable.)

Summary: find last error doesn't show the error if it is inside GOP

Initial Comment:
When you do find last error and the error _is_ trackable but it is inside
some (possibly nested) GOP-enabled subpatch or abstraction, you get this on the
console:

Last trackable error:

but the canvas containing the object that caused the error is not opened and
nothing is highlighted anywhere, that is, nothing gives any clue of where the
error is.

Tested on Windows and Linux, Pd Vanilla 0.42.5.

I reported this 3 years ago, but my description of the issue was confusing and
misleading, and the description seems to be the only thing you cannot edit; so
I'm creating this new artifact and I'll mark the other one as duplicate of this
one.

I will raise the priority because this makes serious development impossible.

Summary: GUI gets frozen

Initial Comment:
From time to time (I haven't been able to isolate a set of steps that
reproduces this), an error message like the following appears on the console:

(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name .c
   while executing
.c coords a7e9d8RCOVER 869 255 877 333
   (uplevel body line 1)
   invoked from within
uplevel #0 $cmd_from_pd

and suddenly ALL the gui elements of a certain type or of several types (e.g.
all sliders and/or all toggles and/or all number boxes) stop working, meaning
that they will stop responding to mouse interaction and stop being updated.

Here's another example of the error message:

(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name .x1814f00.c
   while executing
.x1814f00.c itemconfigure .x17a9308.t1809158R -fill blue
   (uplevel body line 9287)
   invoked from within
uplevel #0 $cmd_from_pd

This happens to me from time to time with very complex patches with a lot of
GOP-enabled abstractions.
I'm sorry I can't provide a simple test patch but i think this was worth
reporting as it is a complete show stopper.

Summary: PureData writing beyond t_object struct on Windows.

Initial Comment:
This very simple external provides a responder to a single message, test.
The object's data structure extends t_object by a single integer, pad. I set
pad to zero immediately after pd_new(). Later, when it receives test, it
prints pad again. On Linux, the log contains the following:

hello_new, x-pad: 0
hello_test, x-pad: 0

However, on Windows, the log contains this:

hello_new, x-pad: 0
hello_test, x-pad: 0x1

This means somewhere between initializing my object and receiving test, the
t_object structure is written to beyond its length.

This was noticed because in a real object I had a pointer in that location,
which was invalidated by this effect, and dereferencing it caused PureData to
crash. My temporary solution is to put a padding int there, but it would be
nice to find the problem. I haven't yet managed to compile Pd from scratch for
Windows yet, so I can't debug it until I get that working, but I thought I
should report it in case anyone knows more.

Summary: focus on properties window

Initial Comment:
When opening the properties window for a canvas object, the window doesn't
appear on focus. This is a small detail, but it bothers the workflow, because
instead of just editing the fields with the keyboard only, it's necessary to
make an extra action to get the focus of the properties window.

In previous versions, new windows (properties included) always had
automatically the focus.

Summary: Pd-0.43 crash with GOP enabled abstraction inside subpatch

Initial Comment:
I keep getting a serious crash if I'm ever using [soundoutput] inside a
subpatch.

I can reproduce it by:

 Opening test.pd in Pd-0.43
 Open [pd SUBVIEW]
 Close [pd SUBVIEW]
 (Try to) close test.pd

Then I get the following error:

(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name .x321860.c
  white executing
.x321860.c delete l323af0
(uplevel body line 2)
invoked from with
uplevel #0 $cmd_from_pd

Then if I move the mouse on the test.pd window I get this error constantly:

.x191a6b0: no such object

I can still edit and save other patches but it's not really workable so it
requires a restart of Pd.

I'm running Pd-0.43-0 on a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.7

Thanks,
Joe

Summary: make helpbrowser separate directories and patches

Initial Comment:
starting Pd(0.43) with custom search paths (e.g. -path /path/to/Gem), results
in a not-so-nice help-browser experience:
basically the left column (the one that is crucial for navigating the various
directories) is filled with all help-patches found in all search-paths, sorted
alphabetically (so directories are lost somewhere between files), and
upper-case before lower-case.

if a search-path is a child of another search path (e.g. /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem
is child of /usr/lib/pd), then both the directory (Gem/) and it's content
(too many to list here) are listed, making the information accessible several
times (adding more confusion)

i don't know exactly where to fix the problem, but a simple solution would be
to only allow directories on the left side (and add an entry for
searchpaths (probably an entry for all searchpaths and separate entries
for each searchpath), rather than throwing everything together.

Message:
I'm guessing this is related to your problem with the Gem abstractions
showing up in the root of the help browser. I think the problem is
elsewhere since its not happening with gridflow or other Gem builds, so
this patch is pre-mature. As for the relative merits of sorting files and
directories, that is a bigger, more annoying question. Windows sorts
directories at the top then files after, other OS file browsers that I
have seen (mostly GNOME and Mac OS X) sort files and dirs together.
Therefore, I think this patch would only make sense if that behavior was
Windows only.

Message:
you are right that the problem first occured to me when dealing with Gem;
however there is nothing Gem specific to it.
however, i don't know why this makes the patch pre-mature.

as for sorting files and directories: here on xfce4, the Pd filebrowser
will sort directories before files.
however, i don't see how this would matter, as the helpbrowser does not
behave like an ordinary file browser on most systems anyhow; e.g. the
Pure-data and --- entries are quite uncommon.

i'm only suggesting to add sections for the various libraries/libdirs
before displaying all the help-patches.

Pd-0.43.1-extended-debian-squeeze-i386.deb (as downloaded today from

it would be nice, if PdX would install as /usr/bin/pdextended and use
update-alternatives to point /usr/bin/pd to this file

Message:
Looking into GNOME, it has a preference to put folders on top of files in
the listing, but I am pretty sure that this is off by default, and things
are mixed. At least in Ubuntu. Windows 2000 sorted folder first, then
files. Who knows, this might have changed in Windows, my Windows knowledge
stops really at Windows 2000.

I'm fine with doing folder first by default, i.e. accepting this patch, as
long as:

a) this line is removed from the patch, that line separates the
static from the auto generated, there should be only one line like that,
not a second separating folders and files.
+$current_listbox insert end ---

b) the old, commented out code is removed. It just clutters things up
being in there. git has the history.

Message:
you are right that the problem first occured to me when dealing with Gem;
however there is nothing Gem specific to it.
however, i don't know why this makes the patch pre-mature.

as for sorting files and directories: here on xfce4, the Pd filebrowser
will sort directories before files.
however, i don't see how this would matter, as the helpbrowser does not
behave like an ordinary file browser on most systems anyhow; e.g. the
Pure-data and --- entries are quite uncommon.

i'm only suggesting to add sections for the various libraries/libdirs
before displaying all the help-patches.

Message:
an alternative is to separate directories from files in the root-column,
rather than mixing them together, which makes the browser somewhat
navigable (and was way easier to implement :-))

see attached patch.

great

i have no special feelings for -- (though i only saw it as a
separator between sections, rather than static and dynamic content), and
the dead code was there because of the first draft.

i'll replace the patch with an updated version

[PD-dev] [ pure-data-Patches-3297657 ] build-system fixes for kFreeBSD HURD

Summary: build-system fixes for kFreeBSD HURD

Initial Comment:
while packaging puredata for debian, we noticed that the new build system does
not detect and handle debian/kFreeBSD and GNU/hurd correctly.

attached patch (for configure.ac and src/Makefile.am) fixes the problems with
these platforms

LATER: configure checks for pthread and libdl, but never uses the values; the
attached patch hardcodes linker-flags to use those libraries on hurd, but on
the long run, the configure results should be used regardless of the platform
