Re: [PD] fast cam

2009-10-23 Thread Dario Pedrioli
In linux with a ps3 eye camera i've reached (thanks to kaswy - ps3 eye linux
driver http://kaswy.free.fr/?q=node/38#ps3)
75 fps @ 640*480
125 fps @ 320*240

You can use more than one camera at a time - only tried with two cameras
succesfully (i've only two of this:-) - 60 fps @ 1280*480 (used form motion
tracking purpose)
(OT: the only problem I have is: how to compose the two images into one
single image to feed a single pix_blob? If someone can help...)

The video quality is excellent (compared to other webcams) - a little noisy
in low light but very good in normal light.

You can choose Exposure, color balance etc... (auto or manual)

The lenses have 2 zoom factor 56 and 75 degrees.
There is the possibility to hack the hardware and have a M12 lens mount on
it to have a wide range of lenses.

Last, but not least: the price is very very low compared to other solutions
(40 euros each).

ciao!

I used a IEEE 1394 point grey flea2 some month ago, on os X, wondows
and linux, but with linux I had difficulty to make it work and in
particular with pd (I don't remember exactly as I also tried ps3 and
others and several other things including acquisition with openCV true
some externals that I made). On os X it was working natively for sure
(try quicktime I suppose ...), on windows with a special driver. I
must say that as I'm not a pure linux guy, so I maybe missed something.
I used also another one quit similar from another brand, but more
expensive, with additional optic (I still try to remember her name...)

I just see that point grey has new products, maybe you should have a

Hi,

I'm trying to overlay an image on a video in [pdp_imageloader], this all
works fine, but I can't scale the images dynamically. offset works and
rotate, but no scale?
pdp_imgloader has a fit to video screen option, so scaling seems to be in
there somewhere?

are there other objects in pdp that do this? I don't want to mix with gem if
not absolutely necessary.

[PD] Firmata 2.1beta7 and Pduino 0.5beta6 released!

2009-10-23 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

We have a new beta release we a major feature and minor fix:

- Shigeru Kobayashi added support running servos on almost all the pins!
- Hernando Barragán added some fixes for building for the Wiring board.

http://at.or.at/hans/pd/objects.html#pduino

I tested this on a Diecimila and original Arduino. These are the only
Arduinos I have, so testing and bug reports on those are very
helpful. There are no outstanding bugs that I know of, if I hear of
no other bugs, I think this one will be the final release!

[PD] PDuino example update frequency

Hi!

Thanks to PDuino I just managed to get analogue data from my Arduino Mega
using PDuino example patch arduino-test.pd, with virtually no effort at
all. Fantastic! Now, as I am comparatively new to PD, I have been looking
all over the patch for a metronome or something that determines the
(1-second?) analogue readout period. I am using the SimpleAnalogFirmata
firmware, but if I assume correctly, this rate is set somewhere in the PD
patch?

Best regards,

Hey Daniel,

If i remember correctly, there are [speedlim 100] objects used in the

So the speed is limited to one read every 100 ms.
It's somewhere in the analog input subpatch (i don't have it here so i can't
verify now)

hope this helps,

[PD] [PD-announce] PD installation in Sewanee, Tennessee

2009-10-23 Thread Greg Pond
There is currently a PD installation in our university's gallery in
Sewanee Tennessee ( hometown of Miller Puckette)

http://art.sewanee.edu/art/2009/10/21/nowcasting-reception-and-talk/

the press release is below.

Greg

Sewanee’s University Art Gallery presents Nowcasting, an installation
created by the collaborative group TEH. It will be on view in the
University Gallery from October 9 – November 22, 2009. There will be
an artists’ talk and reception on Friday, October 23rd at 4:30 pm in
Convocation Hall, immediately adjacent to the University Art Gallery.

Visitors to Nowcasting will experience the building of a digitized
storm in the confines of the gallery. Like TEH’s other works, this
installation is intended to “challenge the senses through the use of
simulation, and present weather/environment through mediated, virtual
and physical processes.” Entering a gallery space transformed by
sound, visitors will question the reality of what their senses tell
them about the surrounding environment.

TEH includes the artists Phillip Andrew Lewis, Adam Trowbridge and
Jessica Westbrook. They named their collaboration TEH after a mistake
commonly made when using a keyboard – typing “teh” instead of “the.”
This name represents the group’s interest in how an actively
participating audience can be a factor in the meaning of an artwork.
Individuals have unintended and surprising effects on the messages
they create and receive. This name also represents the group’s
interest in the difficulties of communication. Messages are often
scrambled, or mean different things to different people.
Representations intended to simulate reality can never be exactly the
same thing.

TEH uses modern interactive technologies to create their
installations, but is also interested in examining the impact and
meaning of those technologies for their users. In a world where we are
surrounded by televisions, wii games, computers and cell phones, how
is our experience of that world changed? The group’s current focus is
on the intersection of technology with weather and specific physical
sites. In today’s world, we experience even something as essential as
the weather mediated through technology. What are the implications if
technology can fool our senses and convincingly simulate real physical
experience?

Phillip Andrew Lewis often explores the viewer’s navigation of mental
and physical environments in his work. He received his Bachelor of
Arts in Psychology from the University of Memphis, and his MFA from
the Memphis College of Art. In 2005 Lewis established Medicine
Factory, a contemporary art space in downtown Memphis, and has
exhibited nationally and internationally. His professional awards
include a 2009 Digital Art Commission from the Austin Peay State
University New Media Program, a 2008 Tennessee Arts Commission
Individual Artist Fellowship, and a 2008 Public Art Grant from the
Urban Art Commission, Memphis. Lewis teaches Photography and Media
Arts at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.

Adam Trowbridge uses a variety of approaches and media, including
performance, video and computer-driven installations, to explore the
connections, and the gaps, between what we experience and what we
understand. Trowbridge received his MFA in Electronic Visualization /
Responsive Art from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and his
work has been featured nationally and internationally, including at
the Anthology Film Archives in New York, and at the Square Eyes
Festival in the Netherlands.

Jessica Westbrook works with photography, video, language, and
information design. In her work she explores subjective and often
contradictory responses to anything from cultural artifacts to extreme
situations. Westbrook received her MFA from the Tyler School of Art.
In 2005 she established the artist’s collective SEED in Chattanooga,
and has exhibited nationally and internationally. She has recently
been featured in Static, the Journal of the London Consortium, and in
Chicago’s artstorage.org. She teaches Photography and Graphic Design
at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.

Sewanee’s University Art Gallery is located on Georgia Avenue on the
campus of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. The

Most of them can run MSW or linux.

Hi!

Thanks to PDuino I just managed to get analogue data from my Arduino
Mega
using PDuino example patch arduino-test.pd, with virtually no effort
at
all. Fantastic! Now, as I am comparatively new to PD, I have been
looking

all over the patch for a metronome or something that determines the
(1-second?) analogue readout period. I am using the
SimpleAnalogFirmata
firmware, but if I assume correctly, this rate is set somewhere in
the PD

patch?

Best regards,

Yeah, I second that. Beware of trying this on
very small 'minimal' boards. The reliable solution
I have used time and again is mini ITX, VIA or Intel
with a stock Debian net install.

For video, you can put X on, along with ssh, and
then use ssh -X to open a remote display, and then
use the board as a headless sound engine.

[PD] introducing l2ork

2009-10-23 Thread Ivica Ico Bukvic
Greetings all,

I wanted to share with you my latest Linux-based and Linuxaudio.org-related
project that has been sucking up most of my time over the past year or so to
the point it seemed as if I have disappeared off the face of the Earth.
Needless to mention it continues to alter my sleeping/eating patterns with
unprecedented aptitude and with no end in sight ;-).

The project in question is to the best of my knowledge World's first Linux
Laptop Orchestra or simply L2Ork. Its software infrastructure currently
revolves mainly around Pd. As a result, there have been various enhancements
to Pd-extended, Linux gui enhancement (pd.tk posted a while ago) being one
of them. We are hoping to release final versions soon.

readanysf~ for Mac/Intel

tried placing them there in my ~/Library/Pd, but this is where i
got:

/Users/dspstv/Library/Pd/readanysf~/readanysf~.pd_darwin: dlopen(/
Users/dspstv/Library/Pd/readanysf~/readanysf~.pd_darwin, 10):
Library not loaded: /sw/lib/libgavl.1.dylib
Referenced from: /Users/dspstv/Library/Pd/readanysf~/
readanysf~.pd_darwin

Reason: image not found
readanysf~ 2 12 1024
... couldn't create

error: [import]: can't load library in 'readanysf~'
... you might be able to track this down from the Find menu.

seems the path to the libs differs, should i place them elsewhere?

gracias y un saludo,

[PD] comment object

2009-10-23 Thread Andres Ferrari
the comment object is not visible inside of a subpatch(with graph on
parent)...why?

when I create acomment by ctrl-5 this one is visible, but creating a comment
object with options for size, font and color...this one is visible only in a
main patch but invisible in a subpatch with graph on parent...any idea?

It needs to be in /Library/Pd, not ~/Library/Pd. So remove
anything readanysf~ from ~/Library/Pd i.e. Users/dspstv/Library/Pd)

Created new readanysf~ with 2 channels and internal buffer of 12 *
1024 = 12288
