Looking forward to further developments, funding are always tricky.

Can I ask what kind of funding you are applying to? Is it an Eu fund?

 Dear community,

I'd like to present Weimar as an applicant to host the Pure Data convention

[PD] pix_record problem

2011-01-20 Thread Michael Karr
Hello all,

I am still teaching myself how to get good output from GEM, I am working now
with a formant vocoder which feeds values into a video composition of 5
rectangles. It renders the rectangles as I want it to, but when I export it
via pix_record, it only saves the top rectangle, and rotated 180 degrees and
in slow-motion. So strange... I have tried several objects as an in-between,
now I have pix_dump, because I thought it might have to do with the 5
different pix_crops, and needed them to go through one device to the
rectangle. So how can I get the entire window to save properly to the disk
(I have read in the forums that many people experience problems with the
color.. this is not my problem here.) I would like to avoid using screen
capture from an external. I have attached the patch as is.. there are two
bangs which need to be activated before starting the rendering.

Thanks!
Michael

if you want to record the contents of you gemwindow, you have to first
grab the framebuffer and convert it into a pix, use [pix_snap] for that.

I don't know why you use [pix_dump] in your patch.
And i am not sure what you want to do but i guess you need send your
[pix_crop] in different rectangles. Then capture with [pix_snap] the
entire gem window, then record this capture with [pix_record].
I strongly recommend you start to see 02.advanced examples in the GEM
section to understand how render order and capture work.

Dear community,

I'd like to present Weimar as an applicant to host the Pure Data
convention 2011 to you all.

Who we are:
The Bauhaus-University and the Liszt School of Music are jointly
organizing the convention. Responsible Organizers will be Max
Neupert of the chair Design of Medial Environments in the Media Art
Design Programme of the Universitiy and {name to put here will be
official on monday after meeting} of the chair Electroacoustic
Composition and Sounddesign at the Studio for electroacoustic Music
of the Liszt School. A team of students will take responsibility for
some aspects of planning and realization.

When:
The convention is scheduled from Monday the 8th to Sunday the 14th
of August 2011.

Please highlight this in your calendars right now!

Programme:
In the tradition of the previous installments of the convention we
will feature an academic conference, workshops and master-classes,
concerts and performances and an exhibition.
The conference will be in the mornings from tuesday to friday and
will feature paper presentations of a soon to be released open call.
Workshops will be presented in conjunction with the Bauhaus Summer
School and will feature parallel sessions in the after-noons in
different levels and interests.
Concerts will take place depending on their nature either in the
exquisitely equipped Studio or in a more club like environment tba.
Exhibition space will be arranged according to the the works
selected by a committee of curators and community members.
I've met with members of the Berlin Pd community yesterday and we
discussed the possibility to feature a closing event of the
convention in Berlin.

Collaborations:
The convention seeks to collaborate with the established local
institutions as much as possible. The festival for new music will
offer opportunities for cooperation. A local community radio will
feature a platform for publicity as well as for experiments with
this medium (think of using the radio to open a feed-back channel
(literal and figurative speaking) to a program or controlling
devices in the city through audio signal over the radio). The
townhall features a porcelain carillon which can be controlled by
midi (think of procedural compositions for this instrument or
interactive works controlling the bells through phones). A soon to
be inaugurated one million euro organ will be installed in a
catholic church, owned by the Liszt School - this instrument is midi
capable as well and could be used for a concert evening. We also
seek collaboration with IOSONO a company from nearby Erfurt who
develops and produces wavefield synthesis systems for a hands-on in
sound spacialization. I have also talked to Electronic Arts and
Reality Jockey to become partners for this event.

This just to give you a few ideas on what we have in mind.

Community:
If you are eager to join us organizing this, from making coffee to
taking responsibility for a whole section of it: Great! Now is the
time to get in touch with me.

Money:
In addition to my work, the University will cover for another small
contract and select students involved will get a little expense
allowance. The Liszt School will sponsor tech equipment and the
space. The Bauhaus Summer School will promote and fund the
workshops. There is no money (yet) to promise travel and lodging for
the participants, nor any other production costs, but we have a few
applications for funding in the pipeline. The funding rally has
started, any support is welcome. Write your application to your arts
council now, we'll be happy to support you with papers, invitations
etc.

The city:
Weimar is a 65.000 inhabitants city in the state of Thuringia, in
central Germany, about half way between Frankfurt (Germany's airport
hub) and Berlin. Weimar is a cultural city and a mayor tourist
destination, offering countless places of interest. Goethe, Schiller
and and Herder have created the Weimar Classicism through their
legacy, Nietzsche and Liszt have lived here (Weimar celebrates
Liszts 200th birthday this year). The iconic movement of the
modernism - the Bauhaus - was founded in Weimar and the original
buildings still exist, hosting the University which proudly extends
the historic Bauhaus' tradition. The painful and dark side of german
history has left unrepairable scars in the cities vicinity: the
concentration camp Buchenwald stands for the systematic extinction
of the european jews. Close to this site the soviets built a
memorial in gigantic dimensions and a martial aesthetic which has an
eerie affinity with the fascist style.

Re: [PD] linking libs in extern development

2011-01-20 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner
Have you tried the library template:

On Thu, 20 Jan 2011 19:34 -0800, david medine dmed...@ucsd.edu
wrote:
Sorry to have cluttered the list with all this nonsense, but I solved my
problem all by my lonesome. It is all kludge, but it works. The elegant
solution (I think) is to write a nice .configure script that will
generate exactly the right makefile regardless of os and configuration,
but I don't know how to do that.

So, in the meantime one way to link libraries when building Pd externs
(this is for Mac, but it should be pretty much the same on any Unix
 outfit) is like this:
 modify the file

 '/'whatever'/Pd.etc/Contents/Resources/extra/makefile'

so that the first line reads:

 'current: pd_darwin'

then in the section that sets the rules and recipes for building on make
 it looks so:

 'pd_darwin: $(NAME).pd_darwin

 .SUFFIXES: .pd_darwin

 DARWINCFLAGS = -DPD -O2 -Wall -W -Wshadow -Wstrict-prototypes \
  -Wno-unused -Wno-parentheses -Wno-switch

 .c.pd_darwin:
  $(CC) -arch i386 $(DARWINCFLAGS) $(LINUXINCLUDE) -o $*.o -c $*.c
  $(CC) -arch i386 $(LIBS) -bundle -undefined suppress -flat_namespace
  \
  -o $*.pd_darwin $*.o
  rm -f $*.o'

I took out all the '.d_ppc' and '-arch ppc' stuff that's in the makefile
that comes with Pd (vanilla) because I have an intel core so ppc junk is
irrelevant. I changed .d_fat to .pd_darwin, because somebody who
actually knows stuff (unlike me) told me that .pd_darwin is the current
convention. The variable 'LINUXINCLUDE' is simply '-I../../src' and is
here recycled from a previous definition in the makefile. It has nothing
to do with linux whatsoever. It just tells the compiler to look at the
Pd source code when you hit make on your external. The other big change
I made is inserting the 'LIBS' variable in the second build phase
instruction which I shall explain below. It is a simple matter to
implement analogous modifications in the other unix-ish portions of the
makefile, but I haven't tested it yet. I don't know anything about
 Windows...

Now that the pd makefile is ready to go, go into your extern project
directory and make a makefile there that looks like so:

 'NAME=awesomeExtern
 CSYM=awesomeExtern

 include /'whatever'/Pd.etc/Contents/Resources/extra/makefile

 DARWINCFLAGS += -I/path/to/awesome-library/headers etc.
 LIBS = -L/path/to/awesome-library -lawesomelibrary etc.'

I put 'etc.' in there because there may be more than one header file or
library that you want to use. You can discover what you need by putting

 'pkg-config --cflags awesomelibraryA awesomelibraryB etc.'

into the command line. These return values are what you want to /add/
(note the '+=') to the 'DARWINCFLAGS' variable. Likewise the return of

 'pkg-config --libs awesomelibraryA awesomelibraryB etc.'

is what you want to be associated with the 'LIBS' variable. On Mac osx 5
(don't know about 6), the path is usually /opt/local/include and
/opt/local/lib. On Unix/Linux I believe it is typically
/usr/local/include and /usr/local/lib where libraries get installed.

Sorry if this is old-hat to all the C honchos out there and irrelevant
to everyone else (as I suspect is the case). I'm sure it is about a
million times easier if you use Xcode to develop your externs, but then
you would have to use Xcode. If this is helpful/relevant to people I'd
be happy to clean up this little tutorial and post it to the Pd wiki.

 Best,
 David

OK, nuts to that. First, I must correct myself, the makefile I am
referring to is in the Pd.etc.app/Contents/Resources/extra folder. (By
the way, I am at home working on my Mac right now, I haven't tried
this on my beastly linux box at all yet and so I am not sure what all
the details of this issue are there off the top of my head.)

Also, I went ahead and dropped the -c flag from the makefile (this
flag stops linking altogether when make is run) and apparently when
you do this, the extern won't build at all! I think this has something
to do with the fact that in this mode, gcc needs to link with all the
Pd objects also, (because terminal tells me so...) but this
explanation doesn't really make sense to me.

Does anyone know how to tweak the makefile (or any clean method, for
that matter) so that one can link libraries to externals?
  Thanks again,
  David
