[PD] Meet up in London?

2012-06-08 Thread Dominic Pflaum
As far as I can see there are no meet ups in London. I would be keen to
hook up with other PDers.

I just wanted to see if there were other people out there who wanted to do
the same?

Many thanks,

Re: [PD] Balloon Project

2011-09-03 Thread Dominic Pflaum
I'd be interested in the results if you put the camera on the ceiling,
having it film from a bird's eye view. Although the use of gravity is
interesting, it makes it difficult for you to have multiple balloons in the
air. Another idea may be to counteract gravity by filling the balloons with
a certain amount of helium.

I like the idea a lot though - would be interested to see its future
developments :)

That's really cool, you've chosen some nice melodies to illustrate it too.

Makes me think of the South Indian counting system, Konnakol. I could
imagine doing a lot of different things with your patch, such as having a
bang sent at the end of each sequence to retrigger a new one.

Very nice,

Re: [PD] Am I alone?

2011-02-01 Thread Dominic Pflaum

Composers tend to do a terrible job articulating what's relevant in their
own work. I'd take what a composer professes to be interested in with a
 grain of salt.

Perhaps in some cases but I certainly wouldn't make that a prescriptive
approach. Without understand that's Steve Reich was influenced heavily by
tape machinery, West African music, and Indonesian music, you can enjoy the
music, but you cannot fully understand the man. There are many other
examples I could give.

randomly-arranged noises until I get to the beginning of the «real stuff»,
and eventually I can't fast-forward anymore because I'm already at the end.
What do you call this ? When is one allowed to generalise ?

(btw obviously I'm not talking about pd-list !)

Can we even define what music is?

Depends on the level on which you expect to define it. You'd have more
chances if you try to define it on a sociological/psychological level.

I think it's ok to have a personal moral view of what music should or
should not be. For me, when you have a sense of what is right and wrong
in music, that is a sort of morality.

That's usually called beauty, ugliness and æsthetics, though otoh lyrics
could be subjected to the same judgements of morality as books do.

In my experience, basing your music on rational moralic standpoints can be
restrictive to the point that you are choked. Maybe for someone else, that
is a way to get organized?

What do you mean by rational ?
