RE: reagan cortege
Whenever I was losing a fight, say to 3 or more guys, I always ended up hightailing it before I got seriously hurt actually. Yes, I have run from fights I probably couldn't win... I once was walking down the street on Saint Patty's, fairly intoxicated, but not falling down drunk, and the unique thing is about this situation, in this town, Savannah, Saint Patty is chaos. Anyhow, 2 guys sitting on top of their SUV call me a name or something and I tell him to get stuffed. So they both jump down and say they want to fight. And me being me, I figure, what the hell, you know, lets do it. So I walk up to the first guy and he kind of runs away then the other comes at me and he belts me right across the face, and some people watching, gasp and say holy shit etc. But being a dumbshit, he stands there and watches to see what his punch did, I turn to him and say, "You hit like a woman," really loud too, so everybody can hear it. Then I walk towards him and he pretends to have a knife, so in the interest of not getting stabbed I hightail it out of there. The moral is, I'm dumb enough to fight, but not to get maimed. -Shawn -Original Message- From: William Robb [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 11, 2004 1:28 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: reagan cortege - Original Message - From: "Treena" Subject: Re: reagan cortege Though I think P. Re: *istD Raw Converter
Hello Mark, I just started playing with it a bit yesterday. I ended up downloading the middle version, but would probably buy the LE version. I haven't done any extensive tests yet, but the first look is promising. It seems to be less harsh in it's sharpening and seems to preserve subtle tones better. I was just comparing 16 bit tiffs, though. As I gain more impressions, I'll try to post them. The Pentax converter is just fine, although a bit of a nasty interface, providing you want to make prints, rather than look at pixels at 72 DPI. I can't comment on the one you are looking at though. I am not even going to read this thread. I am deleting it completely unread. I couldn't stand Reagan's politics. I really couldn't. OTOH, I feel it's perfectly appropriate for some mourning of a former president. At least by those that admired him. I expect the same thing will happen when Clinton dies. There will be detractors then as well, while others will assess his record saying he was great. But I suspect this thread is getting into political debates and I prefer to do my political venting elsewhere. Marnie aka Doe

Hi Kostas, We did discuss the AF TC. The reason the manual warns against use with the 15mm (and I assume the 18mm as I don't have one to check) is that the rear elements of this lens protrudes to the point that they would have a clash of glass should they be paired. Not a good thing to do. > Has anybody used the AF adapter F with the F or FA50/1.7 (I have the > latter but I think they are the same)? I am quite tempted by a semi-AF > 85/2.9. at half the length of the Tamron 90SP. How much of a hit in > resolution should I expect? I would like to use it for portraits. I haven't used the AF TC in conjunction with the lenses you cite above however I have used it with the several other 50mm lenses and it worked OK. Of course most TCs are designed to work best with lenses of short tele length or longer. So YMMV using it with relatively short lenses. What I can say though is that if the lens is good enough you will loose very little resolution at mid range apertures and suffer very little loss of contrast. IOW it's a pretty good TC overall, you should find it pretty handy, I have mine. Shawn, I have to say that is the most pathetic attempt at trolling that I've ever seen. You called a fellow list member a "bigot" without any shred of evidence or any reason. And what makes you think that he is a "right-wing bigot?" Should I call you a "Stalinist" or a "Nazi" because of your overblown rhetoric. The photos presented here are of documentary nature, they are not here to spread the agenda. People have strong feelings both anti and pro-Reagan, there is no reason to stir up a pot here. I suggest that if you have a chip on your shoulder and in need of a good venting there are many places to do it, this is not it however. Please do it somewhere else, stop wasting our time and bandwidth. PAW: Politics of the Young
I took this picture in Birmingham, Michigan, which is a notoriously liberal town. Obviously, these young people are all mindless left wingers ,vbg>). But they're having fun. Seriously, this is a hard crop from an *ist D photo shot at ISO 400. This was a carnival ride that moved very fast and unpredictably. The crop has left some "digital grain," but I don't find it objectionable. I had the camera set on continuous autofocus, and it kept up on almost all the frames I shot. The lens was the FA 28-105/3.2-4.5, and inexpensive consumer zoom that I have grown rather fond of for walkarounds. BTW, until I owned the *ist D I had only one zoom on the shelf and never used it. But I've found that for snapshot walks, they are quite convenient. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2431077&size=lg Paul
Re: Giving up on the FA 28-70/4
Hello Rob, This is something that I am very interested in - basically trying to nail down a great lens for group portraits (weddings/families) that really holds the details as well as the *istD can. I currently have an FA *24/2.0 and am not entirely happy with it. The focal length is about right, but just doesn't seem as sharp as I thought it would be - I'll need to do some more tests myself, but certainly any other tests with lenses around that focal length are more than welcome. I've seen wider shots which give more of the total atmosphere; Tom's is too tight a shot for my preferences.
RE: Next body after P30?
I own a Super A as well as a P30 and P50. It's true that the (earlier) Super A is superior to the other two (TTL flash and shutter priority). One thing I like ablut both P30 and P50 is the very soft release. The P50 has a beautiful design as well. Hi Peter I'd agree with Joe. The Super A / Super Program is a great manual camera. Apart from the LX, it was the most sophisticated manual camera that Pentax produced and it picked up a swag of well deserved awards. I've seen good examples offered on ebay so you could probably pick one up at a reasonable cost. It features program, aperture priority, shutter priority and metered manual exposure modes as well as TTL flash (program and shutter priority only available with 'A' series manual lenses). Also has depth of field preview, exposure compensation and a PC flash connector socket. I've been using one for many years and I still use it regularly even though I have more recent models. The P50/P5 is also good as a step up from the P30. Although not as full featured as the Super A, it is (in my opinion anyway), one of the best handling models that Pentax produced - it really feels good to use. It has 'landscape' and 'speed' program modes as well as aperture priority and metered manual. No TTL flash. It doesn't provide for manual setting of film speed - DX only (like the P30) but if you feel the need to change the rated film speed, you can get around this by using the exposure compensation facility (unlike the P30). I've never used the MZ-M so I can't comment on that one. I have repaired several of what I deem lesser brands too over the years. Pretty much every shot that could be construed as heroic is balanced by one that could be considered mundane or even irreverent. Half the shots are of people smiling, laughing or talking on the phone. Compare that to the typical Kennedy shot. I really had no agenda except to take some shots of something that doesn't happen very often and is a huge spectacle. tv

And one of the most unpopular to the rest of the world, particularly Latin America (remember Honduras and Nicaragua?) and Iraq (where he setup Sadam Hussein with a nice set of weapons to kill his own people), or perhaps Afghanistan (where his policies left Bin Laden and co. setup and nice little training camp after supporting him and the Taleban with weapons and cash to kick out the Russians). Sure he helped put and end to the cold war, but he also played an important role in sewing the seeds of todays problems. Toms pics were nice, pro-reagan patriotic pics - particularly the one of the horse. OK this isn't exactly scientific our impression was that there are visible differences in color reproduction (no judgment here which on is "better"). Sure shooting newspapers, brick walls, roof tops and filigree branches in bright back light gives important insights into the properties of the optics.
