Haven't used this specific model, but in the pivoting joint, look for a

the leg to move past the first locking point. And there should be two

RE: The DA 50~200

2007-03-15 Thread Henk Terhell
If on digital, a new DA 50-200 is far more value for your money, I
think, than any used 70-210 lens. Also my AF 80-320 appears to be very
soft on digital (and I never liked it for film either). I use the DA
50-200 now a lot at the wide range not covered by a 70-210 or 80-320
lens. The only other AF zoom I have in the 50-70 range is a FA 28-70/4
but, how much I liked this lens for film, is for me now a bit
disappointing on digital.

RE: The Perfect Bag

2007-03-15 Thread Bob W

For me, I've never had an occasion where I wanted a bag that my
Domke
F-2 did a bad job. Even when I don't want to carry much
 camera gear, I
usually want to carry other stuff, and the F-2 gobbles it up. It
also
 gobbles up the K10D, *ist D, 16-45, 50-200, 200/2.8, and
 300/4.5 all at
the same time, and that's just in the main compartment. Of
 course, I'm
pretty lazy, so I pretty much keep the bag set up with the
 full kit and
 just grab it and go.

I don't know how old mine is, but I'd guess at least ten years.
It's
weathering and aging very well. Even though it's black and canvas,
it
still doesn't show signs of all of the Georgia red clay it's
 absorbed at
 Road Atlanta. :-)

My F-2 is about 10 years old too. When it was new I took it to
Ethiopia and the strap turned a reddish colour, which I attribute to
the red colour of the earth in the northern highlands. I consider it a
badge of honour.

Sometimes the F-2 is too big for my purposes - eg when I using one
camera and one or 2 lenses on a day trip - which is why I would like a
F-803 or similar. Since they're so difficult to find here now I
compromised on a LowePro Reporter something-or-other. It's a good
size, but there are some usability problems which the Domke doesn't
have. For example, the LowePro uses 2 straps for closure, which is one
too many for the size of bag. The clips require 2 hands to close, or
some very awkward single-handed contortions, whereas the Domke clips
are fantastically easy to open close with one hand. Also, I don't
like the anatomically-curved shoulder strap. On the other hand, it is
quite easy to clip onto my bike's handlebars to use as a bike bag.

At an antique/flea market I stumbled upon last sunday, I found a box of six
rolls of panchromatic Hit film. Here's a box just like it on eBay, for
 illustrative purposes: http://tinyurl.com/2vedp3

Hit cameras are tiny little novelty items from just after the end of WWII
(http://www.subclub.org/shop/175mm.htm). I'm assuming this means the film
is very old, but the box does not have a date on it where it says Develop
before. Apparently some companies still make this stuff, but there's no
way to tell the age of this film.

I'm considering loading a roll in my little HIT camera and trying it out.
Only problem is, I have no idea how to develop film like this.

Does anyone have any info on developing very old film like this (chemistry,
temps, etc)? I realize I may get nothing but a fogged blob in my photos,
but I think it'll be a fun experiment.

 Thanks,
 John

Make more sense to respool some modern film?

PESO:Starling - with the K10D Tamron SP 500 F8 mirror lens

Hi Pentaxians

and the Pentax AF400-FTZ flash for a ride on the bicycle this early morning
to the allotment to take some photos of the breeding starling.

It's far away from an ideal setup for birding (but it's what I have ;-) but
luckily starling are quite big and I could go as near as 10 meters after
some very patient waiting.

K10D, Tamron SP 500mm mirror lens ISO 200, F8 1/125, Flash at hi manual on
K10D , raw, acr converted, adjusted and cropped to about 60%:

http://www.mypage.bluewin.ch/solicom/stare2.jpg

I will go again for some starling photos for a comparison and use the Tokina
400mm M42 next time, my Pentax tele/zooms are too short at 200/210mm.

As I told you before I like Juans work overall a lot.

Hello Markus,

I would not call it a masterpiece because of the cut off feet and the
distortions in the background and the ugly car on the right side but the
expression on the faces and the moment itself are indeed very well seen
and
captured. Somehow the critics on some of Juans photos look as bit
overrated
to me if I have the right to say so. This is just my honest opinion.

just some notes:
- street photography requires different skills than for example
landscape photography. One moment the composition may be winning,
shortly after boring. Honestly I haven't even noticed the car until
you've pointed it out.
- if I wrote masterpiece that might be overrated, however I wrote
little masterpiece ;-)
- I'd be very happy if I managed to capture such a photo so from my
standpoint it's not overrated at all...

GFM Question: Charlotte to The Mountain

G'day Trendsetters,

A quick question for those in the know.

It's looking like I'll be arriving in Charlotte on May 31st,
(overnight stay, then head up Friday morning). So I'm wondering,
roughly how long it takes to drive from Charlotte to GFM (I-85 West to
Gastonia, US 321 North)? 2 - 2.5 hours?

I need to know how much time to budget for the journey to, and more
importantly from, GFM to make sure I can make my flight on the 4th.

TIA,

Are you sure that tripod can be set in different angels?

I just had a look at the Velbon site at the Sherpa series. Judging from the
small pictures, there is a locking device on 550R and 750R, but not on the
250R.
I have a Sherpa Pro CF-630, they are adjustable. The lock is a thingy that I
must lift up. It ain't easy, and it ain't obvious. When the pod is standing
it can't be done. I have to do it from start, before setting it up. A silly
mechanism if you ask me. But it is there. Judging from the pictures there is
a different locking mechanism at 550 and 750. I'm sorry that I can't be of
more help.

Hi guys,

Just bought a Velbon Sherpa 250R tripod. It's got all the features I've
been looking for, at a price that suits both my budget and financial
controller... :-)

One of its features is the legs can be splayed at 3 different settings,
allowing the tripod to be set quite low. Trouble is, I can't for the
life of me figure out how to move the legs past the first locking

can tell me what I'm doing wrong?

However, we have to get busy. WE CAN DO MORE!

I just uploaded two more today. I'm starting to get a feel for what
they like (I think). They seem to be looking for images that stand out
as thumbnails. At least, they seem to favor those. Makes sense if they
need to attract attention to small web-sized images, I suppose.

Regardless, this gallery is giving me a real kick-in-the-ass incentive

BTW: Going through my archives I'm astonished to notice what a large

Re: GFM headcount thus far

2007-03-15 Thread John Francis

It's never necessary to load Zoom Browser et al. onto your machine.
The only part of the installation that you might have needed on an
old machine (one running Windows 98, say) would have been drivers
for whatver you were using to connect the camera to the computer.
It would have been possible to just install that piece, but it's a
whole lot easier to install everything.
With Windows XP the drivers are already built in, so just plugging
the cable in is enough. But that just makes the camera look like
an additional disk drive - you won't get any file renaming unless
you use a file upload utility. Zoom Browser is one possibility
(although I wouldn't let you load it onto my machine, personally;
in my experience it doesn't play well with others), but there is
a pretty good upload-and-rename interface in Photoshop Elements.

Why would you need to load Canon software on someone's machine? I have
been using Both Canon and Pentax DSLRs for several years and have never
loaded any Canon or Pentax software on my Macs. I simply insert a card
into the reader and then drag and drop the files onto the hard drive.
From there, I rename files (ReNamer For Mac) and view/adjust in CS. It
would be easy enough to do this to anyone's pics on a memory card, I can
do this for you if you like. Of course, you can adjust your own pics,
it's plenty easy on a Mac.

2007-03-15 Thread P. J. Alling
Pricing can be interesting, I got my smc F 70-210 for less than $70, a
few years ago. Even then it was known as a desirable lens optically,
(and built like a tank, really hard on the outside, inside there are
some weak points but...). I've found that in actual practice it
deserves it's reputation. You do have to search for bargains like that
one. Good new lenses you pay a premium either way.

The SMC-A 70-210 f4 typically sells used for nearly the price of a new

match in performance (apart from the variable aperture).

I'll buy all the 50-200s you have at the going rate for 70-210s here. Even

RE: The DA 50~200

2007-03-15 Thread J. C. O'Connell
Don't forget about the K45-125/4 thread, it's excellent
from end to end on APS digital.

Regarding the focal range, this post evolved from someone
who SPECIFICALLY stated they wanted 70-210 and CONSTANT
aperture to which the DA 50-200 does not meet the requirement.

I think you are mistaken to say that a new DA5-200 is far
more value than any used 70-210 lens because there were
many many different 70-210 lenses over the years, some of
them are excellent and very inexpensive, and if and when
Pentax goes FF, you could use them FF, you cant with the
DA lens which is slower and variable aperture too, both
negatives compared to the many fixed F4.0 or faster 70/80-200/210
lenses that were made over the years

If on digital, a new DA 50-200 is far more value for your money, I
think, than any used 70-210 lens. Also my AF 80-320 appears to be very
soft on digital (and I never liked it for film either). I use the DA
50-200 now a lot at the wide range not covered by a 70-210 or 80-320
lens. The only other AF zoom I have in the 50-70 range is a FA 28-70/4
but, how much I liked this lens for film, is for me now a bit
disappointing on digital.

The only part of the installation that you might have needed on an

It would have been possible to just install that piece, but it's a
whole lot easier to install everything.

ahah!

With Windows XP the drivers are already built in, so just plugging
the cable in is enough. But that just makes the camera look like
an additional disk drive - you won't get any file renaming unless
you use a file upload utility.

So for my purposes I DO need it...

 Zoom Browser is one possibility
(although I wouldn't let you load it onto my machine, personally;
in my experience it doesn't play well with others), but there is
a pretty good upload-and-rename interface in Photoshop Elements.

I'm hoping someone else uses elements and has a pc :) :) and that their

Why would you need to load Canon software on someone's machine? I have
been using Both Canon and Pentax DSLRs for several years and have never
loaded any Canon or Pentax software on my Macs. I simply insert a card
into the reader and then drag and drop the files onto the hard drive.
From there, I rename files (ReNamer For Mac) and view/adjust in CS. It
would be easy enough to do this to anyone's pics on a memory card, I can
do this for you if you like. Of course, you can adjust your own pics,
it's plenty easy on a Mac.

I'll bring a burner, although it will be a standalone unit (my PowerBook
doesn't have a burner).

IPTC is the standard developed in the 1970's by the International

standard for exchanging information between news organizations and
has evolved over time. Around 1994, Adobe Photoshop's File Info
form enabled users to insert and edit IPTC metadata in digital image
files and so it was adopted by stock photo agencies, and other
publishing businesses outside of the news media.

IPTC data is appended to the files in a manner similar to EXIF

data, and more (like RAW conversion parameters and editing history...).

Re: Macro Lenses

2007-03-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The format is irrelevant to magnification. I was giving an example.
If you understood what I said, you'd understand that it was the same
thing ... said another way:

- The size of the DSLR format is 16x24. If the magnification is 1:1,
the size of the subject and the size of the format will be the same.
So at 1:1 magnification, a Pentax DSLR will image a 16x24mm subject
area.

- The size of the 35mm format is 24x36. If the magnification is 1:1,
the size of the subject and the size of the format will be the same.
So at 1:1 magnification, a Pentax 35mm SLR will image a 24x36mm
subject area.

etc

The key thing is that the number of pixels or the density of the film
is irrelevant to magnification, which is what the example was
attempting to show.

Magnification in macro work means the ratio of the size of the
subject to the size of the format. 1:1 on a Pentax DSLR images a

Good question. I'm assuming a lot of on-line promotion (press releases

magazines. Their problem at the moment - and it's a *major* one - is
that the site is entirely Flash based. Which means it looks fabulous
but can't be indexed by search engines. The number one rule for making

321 is not a problem, except that they close it for blasting from noon
to 2pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You might have a ten minute hold up,
but that is not usual. The contractor is real good keeping the road open
(so far). In fact I ran it down to Charlotte Tuesday morning and back
late Tuesday evening with no hold ups at all. However if you run it when
it is closed it will add a full hour to the trip, the detour is about 50
extra miles, so if you are running it Thursday afternoon take Bill's
advice to heart. It is 20 miles farther that way, but the speed limits
are higher. 421 is now divided highway from 77 to Boone.

 TIA,

 Dave

no, you specifically gave the magnifacation calcualtion
as the size of the subject to the size of the format which
is WRONG, its the size of the subject to the size of
the subject's lens image, changing formats does not change this,
and changing from APS to 35mm to Medium format or whatever,
has no effect on the magnifcation calculation, format is not
a factor, $ should not be considered...If you meant to say
something else, you didnt.

The format is irrelevant to magnification. I was giving an example. If
you understood what I said, you'd understand that it was the same
thing ... said another way:

- The size of the DSLR format is 16x24. If the magnification is 1:1,
the size of the subject and the size of the format will be the same. So
at 1:1 magnification, a Pentax DSLR will image a 16x24mm subject
area.

- The size of the 35mm format is 24x36. If the magnification is 1:1,
the size of the subject and the size of the format will be the same. So
at 1:1 magnification, a Pentax 35mm SLR will image a 24x36mm
subject area.

etc

The key thing is that the number of pixels or the density of the film
is irrelevant to magnification, which is what the example was
attempting to show.

 Mishka,

Magnification in macro work means the ratio of the size of the

I was late for an appointment today. Seems that Office set all my
appointments back an hour. Now I thought I had installed the DST patch
for Office. But when I tried reinstalling it, it said it did not
complete. So I went to MS and read the FAQ a bit. It said you needed a
new install package. So I went to download the install package and it
said you had to run a validate program on your install of XP. Ok! So I
run the validate program and suddenly my copy of Windows that has pasted
for the past 4-5 years is no good. Now I remember I had that problem in
the past, and I recently reloaded Windows, so I probably forgot to do
whatever it was I had to do to show it as a valid copy, but with my old
head, I can not recall what that was. So because my memory is bad, they
want me to pay them $149. Fuck Microsoft!

Actually the CD I have is an OEM version, and I think I have to change
the serial number to the valid one that came on the computer, but I am
tired of having to fuck with it. The sick thing about it is that the
only reason I run MS at all is so I can use PS. Well, I ain't doing all
that much photography lately, maybe it is time to go back to linux.

 Angry an bitter in Boone,

I had a similar situation when I had to reinstall my OS and software after a
drive failure.
A quick phone call to the Microsoft help desk got it all straightened out.
It's a shame that they feel they have the right to protect their

It might be prudent for someone familiar with the Charlotte airport to
publish instructions about how to get from the airport car rental escape to
I77. I had good intructions (thanks Bill) when I drove from Charlotte to GFM
a couple of years ago, but I found the first part of the drive to be rather
confusing, and didn't really feel comfortable that I was going the right
direction until I saw a milage sign with Statesville listed.
