Re: POLL - Computer Screen Size Resolution
1) What size screen do you use 17' LCD (1280x1024) and 12' LCD (1024x786) 2) What resolution do you prefer? 1600x1200 (not on my screens though ;-)). We bought some NEC SpectraView 2090 LCDs for colour corrections and they're great. A-TW-IPS, HW calibration (in the LCD itself) etc. Definitely way better than anything CRT I've seen (including Barco Personal Calibrators) and better than most other LCDs as well (including Apple Cinemas). 3) What's the largest size image that you can see on your screen without undue scrolling? This would have to take into consideration real estate eaten up by the browser. 4) What minimum/maximum size images do you prefer to look at? 5) If you had to scroll to see an entire image, would you be less inclined to view additional images from that poster? I don't mind scrolling if the image looks interesting. Or save it and open it in Photoshop or so... Hi, Lovely pictures, I envy you having a good camera while your son is that young, my memories from 8 years ago are recorded on a 640x480 PS. Glad you enjoyed our little country. Cheers, Andy. Digital Image Studio wrote: Hi Team, I'm back from three weeks in the UK and Ireland, unfortunately I was unable to deviate from the schedule that I was set and consequently I sadly missed out catching up with a handful of PDMLers but there's always next time I guess :-( I shot almost more images in three weeks than I had over the previous year however most were family oriented, not really subjects that I was able to explore purely as photographic studies. We only had a couple of days where we were sight seeing of sorts and then we were with others and rushed so seeing the photo ops just pass by was a little frustrating. In any case it's the first time that I've used the K10D on any trip longer than a weekend so I've come to appreciate it's strengths and weaknesses. Firstly no arguments it served me well, I love the speed of the thing and going back to the rear display size of the *ist D is a real shock however it wasn't all roses. The extra bulk wasn't too bad but then I was working out of a big pack, I have to find a new case for my three lens kit as it just doesn't fit the cases my *ist D does. I found that the battery became exhausted in the order of 350-400 shots with a little chimping (can't avoid it in low light work) and yes I did get caught once with flat battery (out on Lough Ree). I've mentioned it before but now know that I really don't like the operation of the WB system as flash as it is, I don't like not being able to just glance down at the top LCD to see what WB I have selected. I still wish that there was a dedicated WB button and more WB memories, I tended to use AWB as setting WB is such a hassle. I've been using Av with the auto exposure program set to normal and Aperture on the front wheel and ISO on the rear wheel with ISO in Auto (100-800) on start-up. This would be an ideal combination for me but for the fact that regardless of the exposure program mode and known lens FL/SR enabled the exposure system when set to auto ISO prefers to set a high ISO than lower the shutter speed. In many instances ie when using a 16mm lens I would find the system setting the shutter at 1/100th and the ISO at 800 when I could have been shooting at 1/8th without a problem. I wish there was some way to properly control this important aspect of auto exposure system operation. The other irritating peculiarity that I noticed was that all my shots are rotated by 1.5-2 degree CCW, I haven't investigated the issue fully but with SR off the camera has less rotational error than my *ist D had and I never experienced this phenomenon when shooting it. However the K10D screen (focus brackets) seems to be out by 0.65 degrees and the outside frame by 0.9 degrees so that's a start (refitting the screen didn't alter this). I am suspect of the SR system but I will test my theory properly when I have time. I'd love to hear from anyone else with similar observations, I've seen a few similar posts at dpreview since the K10Ds release but no mention here. I've pretty much moved over to Picasa to display my late images on the web, it's a great tool for organizing images, producing galleries and quick edits plus I can push the images to the web and produce a polished CD in very limited time. I've been shooting RAW+ 2MP jpg so using Picasa whilst I was traveling I could very quickly DL/process and update web pages for everyone concerned to view (I shot a two day wedding and had the images on the web the day after). It can even manage *ist D RAW files (for the benefit of Frank the new Digi-Boy). So what have I missed of the couple of months, anything interesting that I should know about? PS I have galleries from the trip but due to their nature I don't wish to bring them into the public domain however if any of you are interested drop me a private email and I'll send you some links. As my primary job is currently stay at home dad and house keeper I tend to have limited subjects to shoot so my little guy bears the brunt of this frustration in the way of being a captive subject, so if you are interested in see my kid pics check the following link: http://picasaweb.google.com/distudio/Thomas?authkey=pzmnlsD2ZJI Cheers, -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

But there is more light and among everything else that springtime brings along, you start thinking about how to photographically make the best use of the increased sunlight. It's nice to see that the list is running very much like it has always run, that many of you oldies are still around as well as some new blood having joined. I have stayed subscribed all the time, although I'm now shooting Canon (20D) and haven't been posting for a really long time - a year, two years? However there is still a Pentax torch glowing inside, if this expression doesn't sound too silly in English. Due to lack of funds for a number of years, I haven't been able to make some needed upgrades of equipment - on all levels - which has somewhat stalled some of my plans. After what must be considered a full and maybe fulfilled life, my father recently passed away, at the age of 85. I am still, along with my sister, sorting out the legal aspects that follow his passing. (My mother passed away many years ago.) As often is the case when parents pass away, there will now be some funds coming my way, which will allow me to invest in some new equipment. I have looked into and felt tempted to buy into Pentax again. However previous experiences of shooting with different brands may lead me to staying with only Canon. We'll see. Anyway, since I'm doing some spring-cleaning, I'm about to get rid of some old stuff that has been laying around or fallen into my lap. Following this message I will post another and list some items just in case someone might be interested in some creative trades or want to bid on something. (Just not cause any expectations I might emphasize that there probably won't be any real goodies from a Pentax shooter's point of view.) Re: Spring greetings from Scandinavia
Lasse, it is nice to have you back. After what must be considered a full and maybe fulfilled life, my father recently passed away, at the age of 85. I am still, along with my sister, sorting out the legal aspects that follow his passing. (My mother passed away many years ago.) This is sad news indeed. My condolences. As often is the case when parents pass away, there will now be some funds coming my way, which will allow me to invest in some new equipment. I have looked into and felt tempted to buy into Pentax again. However previous experiences of shooting with different brands may lead me to staying with only Canon. We'll see. What seems to be true is that no matter what gear one uses - the photograph is made by the photographer. The gear is secondary. Thus whatever gear you choose will matter less than what you would see through your viewfinder tripping the shutter. Anyway, since I'm doing some spring-cleaning, I'm about to get rid of some old stuff that has been laying around or fallen into my lap. Following this message I will post another and list some items just in case someone might be interested in some creative trades or want to bid on something. (Just not cause any expectations I might emphasize that there probably won't be any real goodies from a Pentax shooter's point of view.) Oh!!! Enablement ;-). This is something that never stops, doesn't it? (Hmmm, I am confused here with the grammar - doesn't it/does it - which one is true?!) See you around. FS or for trade. Old stuff maybe for spares. Some Pentax.
Hi again, As I mentioned in a previous message I've got some old stuff that just take space and that I intend to get rid of one way or another. (If anyone's got any Canon EOS lenses or any other useful Canon stuff in working order, they might be considered in a trade.) For now I've got only two Pentax items to list: The 28-200 zoom. Haven't set a price yet, but I think it will be competitive for a buyer. The 500 FTZ flash. This is a very good flash, unless you need later models. A bit hesitant in letting this go. Sorry, for the moment no price set, but I think it will be a good pricefor a buyer. I also have quite a number of filters of various types and sizes, included one or two Pentax filters. Ask if interested. Also a number of odd flashes, included a big early 60-s Pentax one. Also some Pentax lens caps and hoods. Ask if interested. Non-Pentax Many of the following non-Pentax items might be considered only for spare parts. - Minolta x-300 body w MD 50/1,7. Both body and lens very clean and nice looking, except that the foam inside back plate seems partly have disappeared. However I'm not sure if the body works and do not have a battery to test it right now. If anyone shows interest I'll look into it. There might be another Minolta lens around. - Fujica AX-5 body w x-Fujinon-Z DM zoom 43-75/3,5-4,5. Body and lens clean and good looking. However I don't believe the body is working. There is a cover missing for the battery on front. - Mamiya ZM body w Mamiya-Sekor zoom 35-105/3,5-4,3. Body and lens clean and good looking. However shutter blades are damaged and would need replacement and repair. - Praktica LTL body. This was and worked liked new ten years ago when winding just jammed or was blocked. Used to be a favourite M42 body of mine and I always thought I'd get it fixed. I haven't but do believe it will be an easy fix get it going if anyone think it's worth anything. Or for spares. - Canon Prima 105 Point and shoot. (35-105/3,5-8. lens). This I believe works as it should. Looks good. - Olympus APS NEWPIC zoom 600. 30-60 lens. Looks good, everything works well. - Konica Super Zoom Zup 80 RC (Point and Shoot). 40-80 zoom lens. I believe it works well and is an able camera w IR remote control. - Canonet 28 w 40/2.8. A crack in the front finder glass. Works, but I'm not positive on shutter speeds. If interested in anything, mail me and we'll work something out. Just ask, and I will try to be as specific and correct about condition etc. Thanks, Lasse -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Well I've been called many things in the past Boris but hey thanks (though I'm not sure that my Irish/English ancestors would approve) ;-) As for your obs about K10D... I never managed to produce leveled images handheld consistently - neither with *istD nor with K10D. Having bought a monopod improved things some. However when I do align the lines in the viewfinder with focus bracket marks and when I manage to keep it this way throughout the exposure ;-) - it comes out all right. I have a mono-pod however its uses are pretty limited for me, I've just never experienced such consistent errors in my work and it's much more satisfying to blame the equipment. My preferred mode of operation is very similar to yours: P-mode (I just love hyper program two wheeled operation) with Auto ISO set to 100-400... It seems to work properly for me. In fact, my observation is that it would raise the ISO only at the last resort. I just tested my K10D again and it seems that regardless of the metering program the camera will not start pumping up the ISO at 1/30th with my DA16-45 at 16mm and from 1/100th with my A16/2.8 FE (even though I've set the FL for SR to 15mm). So it's not really working for me. You see, generally as a ballpark auto WB works for me. Then (having finally shelled out cash for Adobe LightRoom) I can adjust it in post processing. Although auto WB of my K10D is much more to the point than that of *istD. Setting WB visually using a little rear screen is simply not an option for me and the whole process is far too complicated, I want to know how come Oly got it right so many years ago on their first E body and Pentax still haven't caught on. :-( Finally, thanks to certain folks here, I did buy the Adobe LightRoom and I love it immensely. Just yesterday I sat down and processed two dozen images in less than an hour. It does amaze me how fluent and user oriented is its whole concept. LR sounds like a fabulous tool but while I was traveling I found Picasa extremely practical. I didn't take a PC on my travels, instead I had Picasa and some other utils on a dedicated 2GB USB/SD card in my wallet. I loaded Picasa on the systems of the people who I was staying with, all legal and a benefit to them ultimately. I brought back all the working Picasa db files on the card and uploaded them to my system when I got home. K10d Review on Imaging Resource
An interesting review of the K10d on the Imaging Resource web site. In addition to the traditional list of features and descriptions of knobs, there is a longer term user report that actually provides a little perspective on the design and use of the camera. Whatever you think of the author's comments, I'd like to see more in depth reviews of this type. Here's the link: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/K10D/K10DA.HTM and a short quote from the beginning of the user report. A series of interruptions, not the least of which was PMA 2007, kept me from quickly reviewing the Pentax K10D. It turns out that was good, because reviewing the K10D quickly would be a mistake. It is not like other digital SLRs on the market, and it's taken me a little longer to realize that. There are foibles, to be sure, but I've found things that I thought were foibles that are actually features only a photographer could love. I just had to approach the K10D a little differently. Imagesensor Cleaning Kit O-ICK1 - report
Hey gang... Well, I had some issues with dust, as we all do, and took a look around at sensor cleaners. As most have seen, the dust removable function on the K10D may work for some dust but it's definitely not a cure all by any means. So, after searching around and deciding that I didn't want to spen a lot of money on something that I can easily cure in Photoshop (Spot Healing Brush anyone?), I tried to locate Pentax's own recommended kit, the O-ICK1. Luckily enough there's a gentleman on eBay who sells them directly from Tokyo. I paid a total of $47.99USD through PayPal ($34.99 + $13.00 shipping) and I had the kit in like three or four days. It consists of a cleaning stick with a jelly like rubber stamp at one end (there's a protective cover for the stamp), a set of cleaning sheets, and a manual (mine is in Japanese and English). Cleaning is fairly straightforward. You navigate in the camera menu to sensor cleaning and lock the mirror and open the shutter curtain. The manual notes to make darn sure you've got battery power since an exhausted battery will close the curtain on the stick while you're in the middle of cleaning...not a fun scenario. Then you simply use the stick to apply the stamp to the sensor and then to the cleaning sheet. The sheets are supposed to grab all of the dust and oil and whatnot from the stamp. I have found that you can probably use one sheet for about three-four cleanings. When the sheets are exhausted you need to buy a new kit. It doesn't say how many sheets come with the kit but I would say at least 20. So the kit is good for about 60~80 cleanings. Not bad for $35, IMHO. Does it work? It does. I had to redo my first attempt but all of my noticeable dust was gone after the second attempt. The stick has a raised marking on it that shows you how far into the camera body you have to go before touching the sensor which is good since slight pressure is, of course, the way to go. The end of the stick mimics the horseshoe shape of the stamp which helps you orient the stamp to get into the corners of the sensor (very clever!). Anyway, here's a couple of pictures of the kit and a close up of the stamp. Just move the file using Windows. Then in Lightroom right click on the folder name where the photo is registered, and choose Check for Missing Photos and Folders. PEF vs DNG
Last Sunday I took some shots of a choral recital. I wanted to shoot RAW because the lighting was tricky (in a church, no flash allowed, half the group in full stain-glass filtered sun, half in the gloomy chancel). I decided to use PEF vs DNG, just so I could squeeze enough photos on the card to avoid changing cards while shooting. Of course I forgot about the PEF setting and yesterday went out shooting wildflowers using PEF as opposed to DNG for about 350 shots. I may be crazy, but the ISO 400 shots I took yesterday - under pretty gloomy overcast skies and flat light - seem to have more noise in the backgrounds than the DNG shots I've been taking up till now. I haven't done a scientific comparison, but I've looked at a lot of shots taken as DNG's at ISO 400, and these certainly seem different. Not to the point of being unacceptable - but just some cyan-magenta sprinkles. Last Sunday's choir shots were taken at ISO 800, plus I had to do a lot of shadow, highlight, and color temp adjustment while processing the RAW files to compensate for the lighting situation. Those were more noisy than I'm used to, but I figured that was the inevitable result of higher ISO (I almost never go above 400) and the adjustments. Has anyone else switched back and forth between the two formats and seen a difference? - MCC -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mark Cassino Photography Kalamazoo, Michigan www.markcassino.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Nice capture, but I'd definitely eliminate the remnants in the LRH corner. Taken recently? Where abouts? Re: PEF vs DNG

With the K10D, I use RAW/DNG and RAW/PEF interchangeably and process with Lightroom. Zero difference in rendering qualities, noise, etc. It's the same data. I usually use PEF now since it nets me more exposures per G of card storage, and convert to DNG when I import to Lightroom. This has the advantage of Lightroom generating compressed DNGs where if I hand it DNGs out of the camera they remain uncompressed unless I export them. Hi Andy Welcome here and enjoy your Pentax :-) Greetings Markus -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of drew Sent: Friday, April 06, 2007 12:01 PM To: pdml@pdml.net Subject: Intro Hi all, Just a quick intro... Just bought my first DSLR, one of the vast number of NOS istDL with 18-55 lens on Ebay right now. Been taking photos for years, but mainly with Russian 35mm gear and a precession of point and shoot digital. I have always wanted the flexibility of my 35mm gear with the convenience of digital, now it appears I have it!. Until recently DSLRs have been beyond my reach, but with the recent price reductions I can finally afford it. I was very happy to find my old K mount lenses and Russian M42 lenses work well with the Pentax. Anyway, I live in East Sussex, UK have two kids and one wife. Some of my pictures are on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ Only a few from the Pentax so far, but will take more this W/E. Comments always welcome (don't expect to much, I enjoy photography, I am just very good at it ;-) ). Re: Red sails wide to leeward swing on the heavy spar
The gaff is good for down-wind sailing, but it's main appeal is to traditionalists. There is a practical advantage to the two foresails - they are smaller than one big one, and thus easier to handle by a small or elderly crew. GESO First of many
Hi all, Been busy shooting anything that moves (and lots that doesn't) http://www.rileyelf.free-online.co.uk/GESO_7-4-07/ Some taken with kit 18-55, others with 80-200 Carl Zeiss Jena F4.5-5.6 The pics with the kit lens I shot as JPG, the others in raw and processed with Ufraw GIMP. What is general consensus, raw for important pics and jpg for snaps? or just use raw all the time...
