RE: PESO: Danglin' Bee

2007-10-27 Thread Bob W
I don't understand why this is. If someone more web-savvy
 than me could
take a look, I (and Ann's eyes) would appreciate it.

You could use browser sniffing to find out which browser the client is
using, and use that to determine your palette. Google will help you
with browser sniffing.

However, it doesn't really matter about the difference, and it's not
Ann's eyes that are at fault. The important thing is that you're using
one of the combinations that every design guide recommends against
because of its inherent illegibility. In general it's a better idea to
have dark text against a lighter background. Think about the number of
books and magazines you see with black pages and light print, and ask
yourself if you'd want to read something printed like that.

John, I don't think I mentioned this before but there is a slight
  problem with your page --
the blue lettering (sort of electric blue) is so dark as
 to be almost
  invisible against the black
background... of course, your young eyes may have no
 trouble with it,
  but you could lighten it
a bit and it still would be a nice color combination and
 easier to see.

I've noticed this is a problem with Firefox, but not
 InternetExplorer. In
IE, the links show up as a light blue/gray, but in Firefox
 they appear
classic link blue and purple. I've only been using Firefox a
 short time, and
keep forgetting to see about fixing this.

Looking at my html, my colors should appear as they do in IE,
 like this:

Here's how they look in Firefox:

I don't understand why this is. If someone more web-savvy

PESO: Florence Street Scene

2007-10-27 Thread Alastair Robertson
It's awhile since I posted a PESO, so thought I would add two. My
wife and I had a fantastic trip to Italy last month and brought back a
swag of photo's. Finally got them edited and keyworded in Lightroom,
and so will put some up as PESO's in the next few weeks.

http://www.pbase.com/kiwibiologist/image/87924141
http://www.pbase.com/kiwibiologist/image/87924147

These two scenes capture one aspect of our Florence experience -
narrow streets packed with tourists dodging cars, and late summer sun
flooding in where the stree geometry allows it. The green cross is of
course a pharmacy - there seems to be one one every corner.

These were 1600 ASA - realised that I had the CF on the istD set to
automatically change the ISO in low light levels, so quite a few shots
were taken with higher ISO's than i would have liked.

Comments welcome

Marnie,
This is a good shot. I liked the DOF as shot. The composition puts
the main pedal and 'catepillar' in focus and the distant pedal out. I

wonder how it was done until I googled it and got some background
info. Photography was done using a variety of flying apparatuses. It
portrays the migration of numerous birds, all over the world.

Saw it in a theater back in 2003. Incredibly awesome up on the big screen.

Surprise, surprise, I bought the DVD as soon as it was available (I

With all due respects to Paul S., my favorite was getting a Powerpoint

You could use browser sniffing to find out which browser the client is
using, and use that to determine your palette. Google will help you
 with browser sniffing.

However, it doesn't really matter about the difference, and it's not
Ann's eyes that are at fault. The important thing is that you're using
one of the combinations that every design guide recommends against
because of its inherent illegibility. In general it's a better idea to
have dark text against a lighter background. Think about the number of
books and magazines you see with black pages and light print, and ask
yourself if you'd want to read something printed like that.

I've found I much prefer dark backgrounds to light ones, but perhaps I have
somewhat sensitive eyes. I have read that white on black can be hard on the
eyes, but I did make my text a gray tone to make it less contrasty, and I
think that helps a lot. ff on 00 is really hard to look at, I
agree.

There are two main reasons I chose black as my background color:

1. Photos tend to look better on a dark background when shown on the
internet (IMHO). There's less glare around the image to screw with the
apparent presentation of the photo. I also picked gray tones for my text
and links to reduce glare. Photos often look very different (to my eyes)
between my dark website and my bright livejournal, which has a white
background.

2. Darker websites use less monitor power to display than bright ones, so
it's a tiny contribution towards reducing power consumption and, thus,
climate change. May sound silly, but it means something to me.

Anyone have any ideas about why my lovely gray colors aren't showing up
properly in Firefox?

legible - meaning basically that they are more likely to read to the
end of the text, and to remember and understand more of what they have

A good source of information about legibility in print is a short book
available on the web called 'Are you communicating or just making
pretty shapes?'. It's worth reading and the results are based on
statistical analysis of readers' reactions to different typography and
layout. By and large the results seem to transfer across to the web.

There are two main reasons I chose black as my background color:

I did a bit of research around this a few years ago when I put
together my first web site. The best choice is a medium grey, which is
also used as a non-web standard for picture viewing conditions. I
can't find the references to back this up, unfortunately. It tends to
make photo sites look a bit samey, but there is a good Darwinian

 DJB Whats a PZ-1P.??

It's an improvement on the PZ-1 that has a switch to give a Panorama

AFAIK, the panorama mode is just a mask across the top bottom of the

The PZ-1P is the new and improved version of the original PZ-1 camera
which appeals to serious amateur and professional 35mm photographers
alike with it's unique hyper exposure modes and professional features
including a more versatile built-in TTL auto flash, a personally
programmable user position, mid-roll panorama, three frame auto

I like the picture, an inspection mirror would be handy for you next
time you are in this situation, cheaper than a Live View and easier to
carry than a ladder :)

  but that's nitpicking.

Stark and spooky, though. Nice tones!

 Thanks Charles.

I hear you on the elevation and angle. This photo was made with the
tripod as high as I could set it. It was actually well over my head,
I could NOT see through the viewfinder at all. I'd have liked to get
a teeny bit closer with just a little bit more down-angle, but I
couldn't get any closer to tip the camera down for separation as the
tripod legs would show up in the frame.

To adjust framing, I used the digital preview function to make snaps
and had to evaluate what was on the LCD looking at it rather
obliquely. Awkward but it worked ... took about four-five preview
captures to get the framing and focus where I wanted.

A Live View with an articulated LCD would have been a big asset for
much of the day's shooting. I used this technique with digital
preview on the K10D a lot of the time in very dim circumstances. I
have Live View on the L1 (albeit without the articulated mount on the
LCD) and find it to be a very very useful feature for a lot of tripod
based work; it also cuts down on your time to do tests for exposure
adjustment as you can see the histogram, live, on the display.

It's an improvement on the PZ-1 that has a switch to give a Panorama

AFAIK, the panorama mode is just a mask across the top bottom of the

The PZ-1P is the new and improved version of the original PZ-1 camera
which appeals to serious amateur and professional 35mm photographers
alike with it's unique hyper exposure modes and professional features
including a more versatile built-in TTL auto flash, a personally
programmable user position, mid-roll panorama, three frame auto
bracketing, and new and brighter interchangeable focusing screens.
