Re: Pentax Photo Gallery trivia

2007-11-20 Thread AlunFoto
John,

The requirements seem a bit peculiar at first, but not really very complicated.

Size:
Max heigth is 600 pixels. It is a good idea to use 600 pixels to get
the most out of the presentation interface.
Due to limitations in the same interface (which is Flash-based), they
don't want panoramic images. anything between 3:2 and 3:2 aspect ratio
looks best... :-)

EXIF:
When uploading, the server checks the EXIF for presence of the value
PENTAX CORPORATION in the camera mfg. tag. If there is EXIF
information and this tag is unpopulated or contains a different value,
the photo is declined. The server is very picky. It will not accept
eg. Pentax. This can be an issue with some raw file converters. I
have experienced it with older versions of PhaseOne's C1 (v3.4 and
older, I think), and all versions of LightZone. Adobe Camera Raw
plug-in for Photoshop seem to work in all versions.
If you experience rejects based on EXIF, your only option is to resave
the file without any EXIF tags at all (PS: save for web) and upload
that. Just ticking the this is a scanned image will not work if
there are any camera make specific EXIF tags in the file.

Watermarks, borders, visible signatures etc.
Don't use them.

You may also consult the guidelines for the finer points, but I think
that about covers it. Oh, and you CAN upload pictures taken with
other-brand lenses as long as the SLR is Pentax. Cottyesque variants,
however, are not allowed.

Jostein

2007/11/20, John Celio [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
Only slightly related to the topic:

When submitting photos, do the images have to have EXIF data or anything
else like that included? Also, do they have size requirements (pixels, not
 megabytes)?

RE: OT: And you though eBay was bad...

2007-11-20 Thread Rod Connan
I do believe it is out of line.

I had one of this style body back in the early 50's and the lens was
designed to be pulled out to this position from being hard against the mount
- you kept pulling and then rotated it to engage a breech type lock on the
end of the barrel which engaged in a socket on the back of the lens mounting
flange.

This kept the lens barrel locked in place and prevented sag like this.

Good timing, Cotty.
It's just about exactly 4 years since the *istD hit the marketplace.

1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?
Two.
2/ How many have you owned in the past?
None other.
3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?
Four.
4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera?
Four years.
5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?
Yes. (This says nothing about whether expectations were realistic)
6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest) ?
12 months exactly.
7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?
Yes.
8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you buy it?
Not necessarily. Most improvements are evolutionary and can be skipped.
9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you consider your current or latest model
 'obsolete' ?
Not necessarily. Same reason as 8/.
10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not) 'obsolete'?
No.

Must be about time for one.

Actually I was reading something on a different list about
expectations
and fulfilments with regard to DSLR cameras. No need to be precise
about
brands here, it can be any DSLR, but please limit to this sort of
digital camera (with interchangable lens facility) - so no PS or
anything esle.

Purpose? To help inform my suspicions...

1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

2

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

2 (*ist D and the Olympus E-10. Not sure if you want to count .)

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

5

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR
camera?

Sitll have them all, so 5

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

A bit slow but yes

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the
latest) ?

4 months

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

yes

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you buy it?

not right away

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you consider your current or latest
model
'obsolete' ?

No obsolete is too strong a word

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not)
'obsolete'?

yes

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to answer
this. In fact, better if you don't).

Only when my wife is on it . . .

Personal summary of results in a week.

RE: DIGITAL SURVEY

2007-11-20 Thread Malcolm Smith
Hi Cotty list,

1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

2

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

Just these two.

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

Waited for Pentax to launch *ist D and bought one then - 4 years ago?

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single
 DSLR camera?

4 Years.

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

Exceeded them.

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than
 one, the latest) ?

3 years. Still boxed, unused (story there).

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

I'll never know.

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon
 - your current or latest model, will you buy it?

I'd love a good reason to buy a K10D.

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon
 - your current or latest model, will you consider your
current or latest model 'obsolete' ?

My wife will consider it for me and say no on my behalf.

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or
 not) 'obsolete'?

I don't consider my LX obsolete and that uses film. A DSLR is obsolete if it
is broken beyond economic repair.

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to
answer this. In fact, better if you don't).

No, but I remember an event from 1979 that made the local papers. One of my
friends left school and got a temporary job stacking shelves in the local
Sainsbury's supermarket. A male was arrested for causing 'distress' to
female shoppers who arrived by bicycle. What they saw him do apparently, was
sniff their saddles whilst they were shopping. This little act gained him a
ride in a police car, a story in the local rag and a few months in the local
mental unit, as they were termed at the time. I remember it causing us great
schoolboy hilarity at the time, but thinking back on it, the poor sod
probably needed some (OK, rather a lot of) help.

Not knowing what I might see if I were to get somewhat higher, I'd have

immediate foreground (murky and soft) and limit it to a portion of the
far water surface, even if I had to make it a pano.
DOF looks fine to me, but I do wonder if the clouds are being softened

Re: SMC Takumar vs Takumar

2007-11-20 Thread pnstenquist
Yes, the SMC Takumars are better than the Super Taks in that they are more
flare resistant. One would have to take the same flare-prone shot with both
lenses to illustrate the difference. But my experience with both says it's
substantial. Some lens lines were upgraded optically in the switch from Super
Tak to SMC Tak. One that comes to mind is the changeover from the Super Tak
85/1.9 to the much better SMC Tak 85/1.8. Others are identical in terms of
element configuration. The 35/3.5 and 50/1.4 come to mind. That's not to say
that the Super Taks are bad glass. Some are superb. But they require more
caution when shooting in situations where flare could be a problem, such as
when bright light strikes the front element at an oblique anglee.

SMC-Takumars and the normal (older) Takumar? Could anyone show the
difference between non coated, single coated and multicoated lens?

Actually, there's a little bit more of a distinction to be made.
Here's my experience:

1. Takumar or Auto-Takumar lenses. These are single coated. All the
ones I've seen have a purplish tinge to the coating.
2. Super Takumar lenses. These are multicoated, but not with the SMC
coatings. Usually have both a purplish and an orange-yellow tinge to
the coatings.
3. SMC Takumar. Usually three distinct colors to the coatings (purple,
orange/yellow, and green). Obviously the best coatings of the bunch.

Pentax also made some cheaper non-SMC lenses that were labeled as
Takumar Bayonet. These seem to have the same type of coatings as the
older Super Takumar screw-mount lenses. I have a 28/2.8 like this, and
it is absolutely identical to my A28/2.8, with the exception of the
A contacts on the mounting flange, the A position on the aperture
ring, and the lens coatings.

In terms of real-world use, the Super Takumars are pretty darned good
lenses. They'll flare if you shoot in high-contrast situations, or
directly into the sun, and the SMC versions are better for that. But
they're certainly not terrible in that respect.

I have yet to do any real-world shooting with a Takumar or Auto
Takumar, but I imagine that they'd flare as much as any similar
single-coated lens of a similar vintage. I've got a couple of those
for my large-format camera, and you do have to be careful about lens
shading with them.

Re: DIGITAL SURVEY

2007-11-20 Thread Cotty
On 20/11/07, Godfrey DiGiorgi, discombobulated, unleashed:

That's not an expectation ... that's a desire. You knew the size and
viewfinder before you bought it.

Expectations should be things that you expected the camera to do, in
features or performance, based on what you knew of it from reading
the specs and talking to other people, not things that you want but
weren't known not to be available.

EG: I want a Nikon F3/Thp quality viewfinder in every camera, but I
don't hold that as an expectation for every camera I buy. I'd spend
my life awfully disappointed if I did.

I have to disagree bro. In my book, an expectation can be a desire. It's
all very well to read up on specs and things before a purchase, but (in
my case) I have to feel it with my heart. It's not something that I can
easily put words to. I'm not a scientist, I'm a dreamer. My expectations
are what they are, and are relative. I would not expect my expectations
to be regarded in the same way as someone else's expectations.

It's a bit like cars - or indeed bikes (motorcycles)! You know that
these machines will get you from A to B, and some are faster than
others, or more comfortable, but perhaps most of us have felt at some
time or other a big buzz with one particular car or bike over another.
You know that bike B is more sensible and stops better than bike A, but
bike A gives you a thrill and a ride that you know in your heart is the
one you want. (Exactly how this works with a Prius is another matter ;-)

You can test drive a car as long as you like - but once it's at home and
you're living with it every day, you might find that it has not exactly
lived up to your expectations - or your desires. Yet you knew the facts
and figures before you bought it. What you didn't realise was that in
winter when you've got your big boots on, your foot won't fit to the
left of the clutch pedal, and you get a charley-horse every time you
drive it! Funny, that wasn't in the specs

I'm talking about heart here. Feeling. C'mon man!

BTW, just because something doesn't meet my expectations, doesn't mean I
don't like it. If i didn't like it, I'd get rid of it. In fact, I
haven't picked up the 1DmarkII in ages. I love the L1/A20 combo - it's
real nice. Doesn't get my heart racing, but it's real nice.

my case) I have to feel it with my heart. It's not something that I
 can
easily put words to. I'm not a scientist, I'm a dreamer. My
 expectations
are what they are, and are relative. I would not expect my
 expectations
to be regarded in the same way as someone else's expectations.

It's a bit like cars - or indeed bikes (motorcycles)! You know that
these machines will get you from A to B, and some are faster than
others, or more comfortable, but perhaps most of us have felt at some
time or other a big buzz with one particular car or bike over another.
You know that bike B is more sensible and stops better than bike A,
 but
bike A gives you a thrill and a ride that you know in your heart is
 the
one you want. (Exactly how this works with a Prius is another
 matter ;-)

You can test drive a car as long as you like - but once it's at
 home and
you're living with it every day, you might find that it has not
 exactly
lived up to your expectations - or your desires. Yet you knew the
 facts
and figures before you bought it. What you didn't realise was that in
winter when you've got your big boots on, your foot won't fit to the
left of the clutch pedal, and you get a charley-horse every time you
drive it! Funny, that wasn't in the specs

I'm talking about heart here. Feeling. C'mon man!

BTW, just because something doesn't meet my expectations, doesn't
 mean I
don't like it. If i didn't like it, I'd get rid of it. In fact, I
 haven't picked up the 1DmarkII in ages. I love the L1/A20 combo - it's
real nice. Doesn't get my heart racing, but it's real nice.

 HTH

What I'm disagreeing with you about is that I feel a desire is not
the same thing as an expectation.

EG: In 1975, I wanted a Lamborghini 350GT and I had many expectations
of it regards performance, etc. Once I bought one, I found that my
desire for it cooled quickly and that my expectations of its
qualities were not met. I still found it an interesting, fascinating
car to drive, but I turned it around for sale within a couple of
months despite liking the idea of it a lot.

EG 2: When I bought the Pentax *ist DS, I bought it because I desired
the DA14's FoV, and I expected that the lens' quality and the body's
performance would be satisfactory to my needs. What I found within a
week or two of owning it was that it exceeded my expectations in
terms of image quality and ergonomics. I liked using it more than I
liked using my Canon gear and ended up selling off the Canon in
preference to an increased desire to use the Pentax gear.

Two different things in my book, that's all.

Is there any real, visible differenc between the multi coated
SMC-Takumars and the normal (older) Takumar? Could anyone show the
difference between non coated, single coated and multicoated lens?

My only point of direct comparison between Takumar and SMC Takumar
has been with the smc-Pentax 17mm f/4 Fish Eye (K-mount) that Cotty
bought (and I relayed) and the Fish-Eye-Takumar 17mm f/4 (M42 mount)
that I purchased when I discovered how much I liked the FL and
fishiness on the L1. The two lenses have identical optical formulae,
the primary difference other than mount is the SMC coatings.

Cotty's lens definitely shows significantly less flare than mine does.

Panasonic L1. It's a neat camera, and I do like it. But my
 expectations
were of something smaller with a better viewfinder. This is a moot
 point
 - I knew it was going to be bulkier than I would ideally want, with a
poor finder. But unreasonably, I expect the best!

Cotty,

That's not an expectation ... that's a desire. You knew the size and
viewfinder before you bought it.

Expectations should be things that you expected the camera to do, in
features or performance, based on what you knew of it from reading
the specs and talking to other people, not things that you want but
weren't known not to be available.

EG: I want a Nikon F3/Thp quality viewfinder in every camera, but I
don't hold that as an expectation for every camera I buy. I'd spend
my life awfully disappointed if I did.

Two different things in my book, that's all.

The technical facts (according to Dictionary.com) :
-
Expectation:

-noun
1. the act or the state of expecting: to wait in expectation.
2. the act or state of looking forward or anticipating.
3. an expectant mental attitude: a high pitch of expectation.
4. something expected; a thing looked forward to.
5. Often, expectations. a prospect of future good or profit: to have
great expectations.
6. the degree of probability that something will occur: There is little
expectation that he will come.
7. Statistics. mathematical expectation.
8. the state of being expected: a large sum of money in expectation.

Desire;

-verb
1. to wish or long for; crave; want.
2. to express a wish to obtain; ask for; request: The mayor desires your
presence at the next meeting.

-noun
3. a longing or craving, as for something that brings satisfaction or
enjoyment: a desire for fame.
4. an expressed wish; request.
5. something desired.
6. sexual appetite or a sexual urge.

I understand the two words have different definitions. What I also
understand is that the two words are markedly linked by their definitions.

If I have a desire for something, and I try and fulfil that desire, then
I also have an expectation.

trip to Norway for his use. Permission was naturally granted. Here is
 what came out of this:

 Kinda cool, mesa thinking...

Emne: DIGITAL SURVEY

Must be about time for one.

Actually I was reading something on a different list about expectations
and fulfilments with regard to DSLR cameras. No need to be precise about
brands here, it can be any DSLR, but please limit to this sort of
digital camera (with interchangable lens facility) - so no PS or
anything esle.

Purpose? To help inform my suspicions...

1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera?

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest) ?

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you buy it?

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you consider your current or latest model
'obsolete' ?

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not)
'obsolete'?

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to answer
this. In fact, better if you don't).

Personal summary of results in a week.

Here's a hint: At the time of purchase, expectations and desires are
very close if not exactly equivalent: I seldom buy a piece of gear

Re: PESO: Ferry

2007-11-20 Thread Rick Womer
Well, using the larger display option on photo.net,
the top of the light-colored band of water is 2.8 cm
from the bottom of the pic on the left and 2.8 cm from
the bottom on the right. Said light band of water is
thinner and brighter on the right, and I think gives
an illusion of non-horizontality. The original wasn't
straight, and I gave that problem considerable
attention.

I'll play with the curves as you suggest if I have
time this evening.

Thanks!
