Enablement (was the occasional 300mm...)

2007-11-24 Thread Bong Manayon
Hi,

Just came out of a personal economic crisis and I celebrated by
finally picking up my 70-300 zoom. My first choice was the Tamron Di
which was not available in the Philippines. Trying to order online,
there were 3 sites that had it for around US$150--plus owing the fact
that I had a friend travelling through the US--I tried ordering it
online and shipping it to where he was (save on shipping...). Anyway
site #1 says they don't ship to different billing  shipping address;
site #2 is okay to ship to differing addresses but not to hotels; site
#3 is okay to ship to differing addresses including hotels but will
not entertain overseas buyer (s...expletive deleted).

Anyway, walking into a local camera shop, I mentioned my quest for a
70-300 and the dealer said if I'd opt for a Sigma. He's got this
Sigma 70-300 APO open box special for about US$137.00. Will just wait
for this typhoon to blow over I'll get out and shoot something...

Cotty, if you do get to go to Bath, you've gotta have tea in the Pump

My brother actually lives in Bath, so it was a no-brainer to stay there

Thanks John. My wife goes occasionally but I prefer a cuppa in the bath.

One of my favorite spots in Bath is a restaurant called The Walrus and

A friend of mine has recommended a computer person his business uses

the best way to go with this.

Other than PS, i have Lumipix and Breeeze Browser Pro on the C drive.
These are the most used programs. I have the downloaded set up files
backed up, just may have to contact the owners for any S/N's i cannot
dig up as a just in case.

Its an older computer, 2002, and it as i understand, some of the
newer, bigger dirves might not function with an older MB.

I;'ll see ehat he has to say, i just hope it works until my Xmas
orders are complete, they are starting toi come in now.

All important photos, downloaded setup for PS, Lumipix etc and

In your opinion Bill, should i look at getting the HD replaced(its
only a 80 gig at the moment). I know when this one was replaced 18
months or so, he mapped all of my files and programs from the old one,
and istalled the new HD the put the programes and files on the new
  one..

Sounds like this is done all the time and not a big deal, ??eh.

I hate replacing main drives, it takes me weeks to get the machine back to
 the way I like it.
If you can get things mapped, then it's not such a big deal, I guess. I've
always done clean installs though, which is a royal pain.
I just discovered the settings migration tool that Win XP comes packaged
with, which made my new machine a lot easier to deal with.
If you don't have irreplacable data on the thing, I'd just use it until it
 craps out.
A couple of things that I've done on my machines is to seperate the My
Documents and email storage directories from the C drive, and I also export
my address book and bookmarks files to a backup drive from time to time.

Thanks, timber?
I may work on the background at some point, but only in a minor way.
The blowout is inevitable and there to stay. I sometimes make prints
of the pics I shoot at the coffee shop and bring them along next
time. I can sometimes find the subjects, and they're always happy and

Sigma HSM lenses for Pentax KAF mount

2007-11-24 Thread Inner Focus
Hello, I'm new on this list. Since I've seen some people curious about Sigma
plans for the future, I decided to share the following with you.

I was interested in buying a few Sigma lenses for my Samsung GX-1S, so I mailed
the USA, UK and France Sigma representatives asking them if they plan to
introduce HSM on Pentax lenses in the near future. The answers were the
following:

1) USA:
We are not working on that at this point in time. If any changes we will
make an announcement on our website.

2) UK:
At present we have no plans to produce our Pentax lenses with HSM. The
majority of Pentax cameras cannot take the HSM system. Sigma may decide
to produce Pentax HSM in the future.

3) FR:
A ce jour, cela
n'est pas prévu.
(Translation: Sofar, this is not planned.)

Comments are useless... :(

OK, I also have a question: what's the advantage of ultrasonic motors? I'm
interested in AF speed, since I've had a lot of trouble with my camera and it's
kit lens (annoying AF hunting or even impossible AF in not-so-low :( light).

The advantage? Silence. Focus speed, (and hunting), is unchanged.
However all the Pentax SSM, (same as USM AFAK), have wider apertures,
which does make quite a big difference in focus speed and accuracy

Proccessing observation, Pentax - Nikon, to quick prints

2007-11-24 Thread David J Brooks
Probably nothing earth shattering, or not alreeady known, but i;ll share this.

Thursday, the SO asked me to pick some files from our last two Vegas
trips, and print them as 4x6's for an album. She's tired of looking at
the monitor.:-)

I picked roughly 60 from each and put them in folders.

Since i have to adjust just about every shot taken from the Nikon D1,
D1H and or D2H, i thought it would be best to open them all in PS and
look.

Of the first 60, only 3 needed some levels tweaks, and i had to
convert 7 that were in Raw mode. I have not done the second 60 yet,
but anticipate the same.

Had them done at Shoppers for $0.19 each and they look fine for
insertion into an album.

These are K10D shots BTW.

Wonder why i have to do a lot of post process with the older Nikons ,
not so much with the D200, and i rarley have to do anything with the
K10D shots.

Paul,
I like this image. There's a nice dynamic going on in the frame
between father son's gaze and the chess pieces. And you've done a
great job also with the exposure. With the window as bright as it's

The Pentax definitely does a better job at file processing. I was doing a
mini seminar at the studio a while back to show the crew the entire
photography experince from capture to print.
I was using my K10, whey were using mostly D70s and a D200. The first thing
we noticed was that the Pentax produced jpegs were nicer to print than the
Nikon produced files, and I thought the pictures looked nicer too.
The Nikons will produce a lot more of them in any given time frame though.
We just sold a huge portrait of a young couple and their 2 dogs which I shot
with the K10, and was gorgeous, and had a nicer look than the display prints
shot with the Nikons under similar lighting.
I suppose that I am often using the A*85/1.4, and the Nikons always seem to
have zooms mounted might have something to do with this also.

OK, I also have a question: what's the advantage of ultrasonic motors? I'm
interested in AF speed, since I've had a lot of trouble with my camera and
it's kit lens (annoying AF hunting or even impossible AF in not-so-low :(
light).

USM has the potential to be faster, but is not necessarily going to fix your
problem. Kit zooms are pretty dim, and often rather low contrast lenses, so
the AF doesn't get as much light to work with, and what it does get isn't as
good quality, as AF is contrast sensitive.
AF performance with an f5.6 lens is enormously compromised in surprisingly
bright light.
Try a better quality lens. Even an AF50/1.7, which isn't overly costly, will
give an indication of what the kit zoom is costing you in performance.

I think you'll find that if you are really interested in fast AF, you should
be looking at the top end Canon or Nikons and their fast glass. Expensive,
but really high performance, and they don't take Pentax lenses, which is a
fatal flaw.

Interesting discussion here:

I want Pentax to bring out a firmware option that will allow us to
switch between shaft-drive and SDM AF. Reasons are:

1. Before getting the two DA* lenses, I had not realized how much I rely
on audible feedback to know when an AF lens has locked focus. Now I
know. In bright light I often can't see the focus indicator in the
viewfinder. I would like to have the option of getting that audible
feedback. And, no, I won't turn the focus confirmation beep back on.

2. In 10 or 15 years, when Pentax can't repair the SDM mechanism, I
would like to be able to switch back to shaft drive.

Overall I am not impressed with SDM. Perhaps it is useful for people who
really need the quiet focusing. For me it is a big yawn, with some
negatives.

Pentax engineers hinted that SDM wouldn't focus faster. But even many
people who read that interview were in denial about it.

Other than this, I like the DA* lenses very much.

Probably nothing earth shattering, or not alreeady known, but i;ll share
  this.

Wonder why i have to do a lot of post process with the older Nikons ,
not so much with the D200, and i rarley have to do anything with the
  K10D shots.

Maybe, ut all of the files i proccesed/printed we're with the 16-45.

I use the Nikon 70-210 F2.8 VR. I hope thats not the case. Thats not a
$400 zoom.:-)

Thanks Walter. The new dog is Bella's half sister, and is a bit of a resue
from a broken home.
We got her last Tuesday.
Jester is getting used to things now, but it's been a bit ugly from time to
time.
He is capable of some of the most assholey behaviour I have seen in a dog,
but even for him, he has been over the top.
Typical young male Rottie.
He is growing a brain, we just had a bit of a setback this week while he
sorted out the fact that there is a real live and intact bitch in the house.
This hasn't affected his people friendliness, which is tremendous. He has
yet to meet a person he hasn't liked.

At nearly 18 months of age now, he has pretty much reached his full adult
height, but not his full growth or weight. He is 26.5 inches at the shoulder
and just a shade over 100 pounds. I've downgraded my estimate for weight on
him, I doubt very much he will top 125 pounds when fully mature (if he lives
that long.).
Anyway, here's a shot of him, taken earlier this afternoon.

Subject: Question Re: Photoshop CS3 Installation

I am about to upgrade from CS2 to CS3. Before I do, I wonder if anyone
can tell me what to expect in regard to my installed plug-ins. Will CS3
give me an option to install over CS2, preserving my plug-ins, or will I
  have to re-install them?

You can export them from CS2 and then import them into CS3 from the looks of
 it.

Many Photoshop users who have lots of plug-ins keep them in a folder
separate from the standard location.

If you have a look under PreferencesPlug-Ins Scratch disks you can
actually define an Additional Plug-Ins Folder location. Install all
your plug-ins there, and just point PS to it's location whenever you
upgrade.

Cheers,

Dave
