Re: How to deodorize old Pentax?

2007-12-15 Thread Toine
Put it in a box with activated charcoal (maybe the inserts for shoes
could work, some have activated charcoal inside). Oxygen from
hydrogenperoxide should also work but it would also generate a fine
mist of hydrogen peroxide which get's inside the camera.
Or simply heat (100W lightbulb in a box), UV light maybe?

On Dec 14, 2007 12:38 AM, Peter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hi there!

I have a Pentax S1A that I want to get overhauled and working again.

Here's the thing though, I am trying to deodorize it first. The camera
has spent the last 30+ years inside it's case and the back of the
camera (curiously not the front) seems to have this strong sweetish
aroma coming from the black textured area that makes me dizzy. I have
let it sit in the open air for the last 2 months and nothing changed.

I have tried dish soap, potassium hand soap, castile hand soap. No
luck. I've tried leaving it in a casserole container with baking soda
for several days, no luck either.

I still have on my list to try: vinegar in a bowl in the container
overnight, paste of hydrogen perioxide mixed w/ sodium bicarbonate in
order to generate massive oxygen and scrub at it, zeolite overnight,
newspapers overnight, charcoal overnight, spray it with febreze
 (cyclodextrins).

I suppose a last resort would be to strip the grip material off and
replace it, but I'd like to avoid doing that because it's in perfect
 condition.

 Advice appreciated.

 Thanks!

Re: Reposting a question re PS and browser image differences

2007-12-15 Thread David J Brooks
I agree with Paul here. I use to just use the Adobe Gamma settings and
my prints we're only about 90% of what they looked like on the
monitor. After buying Marks old Spyder unit and disk's and turning off
AG my prints are 98-99% of the monitor.

Even when using the Proof set to Working CMYK, i was getting matching
outputs, however, i was frustrated at why my equine photos using the
D1h and sometimes the D2H, looked fine in the preview browsers, but
dark and muddy in PSCS2, using a PC and XP Home.

I can see a difference now, moving from CMYK working to the Monitor
RGB, and comparing after conversions, to the MS browser window, they
now look the same.

I just need to find a store with some paper in stock, so i can do some
test prints. The Staples near by is out. I'll try again Monday.

Oh crap. I just noticed i still have some Epson 4x6 paper, i can play on those.
Phe.:-)

Thanks for all the tips here. Even after being in to digital for close
to seven years now, its still abit confusing at times.

Thats were the collective comes in.:-)

Well, you'd probably chuckle at mine, then. :-) Honestly, though, mine
has been close enough just using Adobe Gamma to get the monitor
somewhere in the right continent and the Epson-provided Stylus Photo 820

Before Gamma and the profiles, getting a decent print that was even

most likely accepted on a we may not get a lot of response feelings,

Re: Pentax Gallery

2007-12-15 Thread Jack Davis
I agree. No matter the subject, there is no question that it's much
more difficult to get an image accepted now than was the case in the
beginning.
Not disagreeing with Paul that there may be a genre sensitive policy in
place, but it's clear that landscapes bounce back as declined freely
and with very little hesitation.

Re: Interesting DSLR comparison at dpreview.com

2007-12-15 Thread Thibouille
Boris, I really think some reviews (rare ones) are truely useful,
complete and objective as one can be.
However DpReview (notthe onl site of course but it is very good
example) typically proves the guys running it are either incompetent
(which I beleive) are a lot more interested in the revenues the site
generates (also the case for DpR).

As for DpR, the only real value is the detailed controls and detailed
pictures of (not from) the camera. Nothing more, really.

Pentax dev. roadmap and 645D system

2007-12-15 Thread Roman Melihhov
With all the rumors around next Pentax DSLR I returned to study lense
roadmap. While all of them already available or yet to come in 2008,
there was one DFA 645 55mm f2.8 with note: tentative name - available
with 645D system launch. We'd already seen the birth of a kool 10D one.
Perhaps next be 645D after all. Although this means I'm out of lenses
for 645 but I'm still hoping to see this large format camera in digital.
I hope this shall happen around 2008, not any mysterious K20D. Oops, not
again...

Dramatic landscapes or major wildlife (600/4 territory) seem to dominate
these
 days.

Last time I looked there were around 20 images posted taken with a 600. I
had a majority of them.
I've recently submitted a few more taken with the 600, all were rejected.

I'm beginning to think that somehow posters with a lot of accepted images
are being rejected outright.

You may be right. You have submitted some great stuff and I would
expect your level of submissions to be fairly consistent. If they are
rejecting as you surmise, it would be good of them to let us know so
that we don't waste time and bandwidth. I have always felt that the
final judges should be the ones to really finalize. In essence, the
peer voting would be to narrow it down to 'potential' candidates. So
if there were some quite good images, they should probably make it to
the final judges rather than the peer vote removing them.

The minute you put a 'peer voting' process in place before the final
judges get to see an image you're going to end up with images being
rejected at the peer voting stage (if not, then the peer voting stage
serves absolutely no purpose). Peer voting narrowing the list down
to potential candidates is, in effect, what is happening today.

A bit of silliness from Tom. But that's okay. In fact, many of us have
Spotmatics. I have three and quite a few lenses as well. I just don't need
another. And no, most of us don't shoot much film. And yes, many of the pics we
take could have been taken with a cell phone. But so too many of the pics folks
take with Spotmatics. They're all just photographs, nothing more, nothing less.

Yes most of us here are shooting digital, and yes i made what should

Everyone here has or still has old film cameras somewhere in the

My uncle had a DBS-V8 (model prior to being renamed Vantage) which
was a kick to drive: fast, reasonably precise, but heavy. Very nicely
finished, by comparison to the Lamborghini Espada he had prior to it.

I always liked the advertisement for the DBS-V8: just a picture of
the car with 0-100-0 ... 17 seconds at the bottom, then the logo.

The Seattle Public Library building is a remarkable

Peter,

I'm not sure about this one. I like the foreground,

there is the upper part of the sky, which looks sunny

Rick,
I like the first shot especially with the fisheye, it accentuates the
architecture and the way you've framed the entry over to the right
that creates a dynamic with the folks coming from the background. The
only distraction is the heavy diagonal line of the sidewalk expansion

#2 has some interesting patterns, but something about the image is
just not doing it for me. Perhaps if it were sharper or taken under

I like # 3 also with the strong geometric patterns and the way it

different angle from the opposite direction with a single person

sorts of interesting cars, and let me drive most of them. The only
car of his I never got to drive was an Adams Probe (best known as
the car Malcolm McDowell drives in A Clockwork Orange, when it's
called a Durango 95). Just about everything else of his I drove,
including the E-type jag and a Bentley R (on many occasions). I
only got to drive the Aston twice - once when we were going up to
the London office of Pergamon Press, where he worked, and he was
late for a meeting with Robert Maxwell. He leaped out of the car,
threw me the keys, and said park it. The other occasion was when
another friend, one who got to drive the Aston fairly often, was
teasing me about it. This was overheard, and suddenly I was asked
to take the Aston out in treacherous driving conditions. not only
that - I was going to pick up the thing Ken valued above all else;
his lady love (who he never, *never* allowed to be driven by others).

That's not exactly true, when the bottom fell out of the film camera
market I picked up most of the screw mount gear I wanted. I have a
classic 35mm kit in screw mount, an SMCT 35mm f3.5, an SMCT 50 f1.4,
and a SMCT 135 f2.5 with a Komura Telemor II 2x converter for extra
reach.with two primary bodies a Spot F and a ESII (and a H1 as a
meterless body just because). I don't have enough time to shoot my K
mount equipment, let alone my m42 stuff. I feel guilty about that
sometimes. So far I think Chuck has gotten some pretty good advice.
Unless he has something really special,. he's better off selling the
stuff on e-bay.
