Re: Portland Fountains
From: Polyhead [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't need to do any of that. :) You can be patient. I also refuse to use jpeg, png or nothing. I may consider getting a co located machine, but then again, do i really care? not really. I don't use photoshop, I use gimp. Static HTML wouldn't be any faster than coppermine. All the images are pre-rendered. The back end is powered via mysql, no cpu usage at all to display anything, so going to static html isn't going to help a damn thing. You can't do batch uploads via SCP that way, screw that. Also, read the EULA, no thanks! It also probably doesn't allow PNG file types. Lossy compression is for losers. Brad? Re: Cost speculation on a few DA lenses
- Original Message - From: David J Brooks Subject: Cost speculation on a few DA lenses I just had a peek at the Lens Roadmap pdf. It could be an older version whow knows. I see the 50-135 which is now out and in stores. I also see the DA60-250 F4. I have searched Henrys web site, and its not there, so i guess it has not been released. I also do not see a DA70-200 F2.8 lens, but i'm hearing talk of such a thing in the future. The 70-200 would be nice for my equine work, but the 60-250 F4 sounds interesting as well. Any speculation on release or MSRP. I had a nice chat with the local Pentax rep last week. The 60-250 is slated for a spring release, and he (and I presume PCI as an entity) isn't able to give a guess on the price. My own guess is that it will be around $800.00. I'm looking forward to this lens as well. The 65mm would be close to the same angle of view as the 15mm is on the istD, so after that it depends on if you can stop it down far enough and perhaps use a little lens tilt to get what you want. Face Recognition?
I've seen this feature heavily advertised on Canon and other cams. Today I see a Pentax Optio advertised in the paper, and I see that it, too, has genuine face recognition. I no longer have the eyesight of a 20 year old, but I have no problem knowing when I'm looking at a face - either in real life or through a viewfinder. A lot of cameras are offering it now. What it supposedly does, depending upon the camera, is identify the faces in a scene and attempt to set the focus and aperture to bring them into reasonable focus. It's more or less effective depending upon the complexity of the scene and the physical limitations of getting a good exposure vs DoF and focus point. It's useful for snap shooting, casual pictures of family and friends, with minimal thought: an automation convenience. Whether that's of interest to you I cannot say. Actually, a large percentage of the people here on the list are computer professionals. They have forgotten more than you have had enough time yet to learn. Re: Way, way, way off topic - got another bicycle
Hey, that bike has been made exactly like that since 1903, kids! Oops! Sorry, they did upgrade it in the 70's when they started putting bright stickers on it. There are about 20 companies in India building those bikes, most of them get shipped to Africa. However you can get basically the same bike build in Holland with high-tech parts for $1500 or so. A little less tongue in cheek, the old roadster bicycle has its place when you need a bicycle for transportation instead of for a toy. They ain't fast, but they don't break, even when you hang a few hundred pounds of cargo on them. Graywolf Website: http://www.graywolfphoto.com Blog:http://www.graywolfphoto.com/journal/ --- P. J. Re: Way, way, way off topic - got another bicycle
Most people think chain guards and fenders are old fashioned, but really they are just expensive, if you leave them off the bicycle you can sell it a lot cheaper. If you use you bicycle as a toy (we will ignore the serious racering cycles where the issue is weight) you do not need them, but if you want to wear your good clothes when riding you have to go out and by them extra. In other words, bicycles intended as transportation have both fenders and chain guards, and the ladies version also have skirts so their skirts will not get caught in the spokes of the rear wheel. Re: Face Recognition?
I believe it affects the auto focusing, Frank. If the algorithm finds what it thinks is a face it focuses on that. Just making cameras, for idiots, a little smarter. Re: Portland Fountains
Marnie, the thumbnails are huge too. Just hogging bandwidth for something which should just make you think it might be worthwhile to download the actual image. It's like embedding a PSD or uncompressed Tiff file, in a web page, or even using a full size jpeg for the thumbnail, sure the full size image loads instantly when you click on it, but it defeats most of the purpose to using a thumbnail, without that advantage. Re: PESO - YAGFMS (Yet Another Grandfather Mountain Shot)
I think the answer to the DOF issue is f64 with tilts and swings to modify the plane of focus. Hey, to duplicate the AOV of a 15mm lens on a 1.5x crop (aps-c), camera would only require an 86mm lens. (I knew my damned Angle of view calculator would come in handy for something.). I'm sure there's such a beast out there somewhere... Since I've been tempted by thoughts of a 4 x 5 recently... Would I have been able to get the necessary DOF with a view camera for that shot? With lots of close objects around the perimeter of the composition and distant stuff in/near the center, tilt wouldn't help. And duplicating the angle of view of that 15mm lens might be interesting. And then there is that whole JPEG thing bringing it down Well, I only have my own pitiful ignorance to blame for that.
