Thats because of the voltage curve of a LithiuhmIon/Lithium Polymer Cell. I
cell will typically produce a peak voltage of 3.6 volts, but not be considered
discharged till around 1.6 volts. Most devices will NEVER drain a lithiumXXX
rechargable cell unless they are designed specifically for them, OR, there is a
DC-DC converter inside the battery pack. LithiumX rechargables just are not a
suitable drop in replacment.

FYI.. u mm, 2 cr-v3 Lithium batteries are not rechargable. I'm not sure where
you are getting that lithium batteries are rechargable. :/ I suspect you mean
lithium ion, and yea, a drop in system would not work out very well.

Sound delicious.

Normally my sister comes up up here for Christmas, she does not drive,
so its extra trips for me. This year we talked her into doing the
cooking, and saving me some time and gas.
She does not cook much, but did a great job. Turkey and spuds we're
great. I do like turnip, but she felt that was beyond her.:-)

Next year back here i suppose. Its not all that bad, as we don't see
each other enough anyway.:-)

Re: Rechargeable batteries and chargers

2007-12-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
I never had much luck with Nimh batteries in my D or my flashes until
Rob mentioned the La Crosse charger. It charges each cell
individually, so each reaches peak voltage. It also can be used to
discharge and to cycle/refresh the batteries. I use it with 1200 Sony
batteries for my flashes, and they perform beautifully. In my D,
which is rarely in service, I use the long shelf life lithiums. No
hassle. Here''s the charger. It's on sale at Amazon: http://

I have the two sets of the Power2000 2400mAh AA NiMH batteries with
rapid charger that I bought with the *ist DS body at the beginning of
2005. I use them in my flash unit and in my wireless keyboard and
mouse now. They have always worked flawlessly. In the DS bodies, they
regularly turned 600-700 exposures per charge. I have yet to exhaust
a set from a fresh charge in the flash unit, but I only rarely use
the flash unit for more than a couple dozen exposures at a session.

I noticed a shift away from nature and landscape in recently accepted
images after our conversation here. I wouldn't be surprised if
someone from Pentax Gallery reads the list. Immediately following our
conversation I submitted a pic of Grace blowing bubbles that had
previously been rejected. It was accepted. We may very well have
alerted someone to what was obviously a bias.

handed the clerk her credit card and said she wanted their

OT: Spirit Snobs

2007-12-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
Well, Tom has a point in that our discussions of booze sometimes
border on the pretentious. But it is fun to discuss spirits we've
tried and enjoyed. There have been times when I've been able to
afford them and times when I haven't. But even in tough times, I
enjoy hearing what others enjoy.

These times are tough times in Michigan. While I still make
exceptions for the holidays, my scotch whiskey of preference for
ordinary occasions is usually Lauders. It's the best scotch that
comes in a plastic bottle. Twenty dollars and twenty-one cents for a
half gallon at most outlets in Michigan. A bit less pricey than
Lagavulin, which rings in at about seventy bucks a fifth, and it has
the same mellowing effect. It also tastes a lot like some of the best
blends. I'd say it's a cross between Johnny Walker Red and Dewars.
Not as peaty as Dewars, which is my favorite blend, but quite
palatable. Not a bad whiskey by any measure. No big sacrifice on my
part. And should I drop it, the plastic bottle doesn't break.:-)

Sipping an eggnog spiced with a bit of Lauders as I write this...
I actually prefer Lauders to Chivas Regal.
I have bought a few bottles of single malt in my day, usually in
airport Duty Free shops. But I have never bought any of the really
high dollar Scotch. My experience there comes courtesy of a friend
who has a magnificent collection of Single Malts. When I visit, he
turns me loose on that corner of the house. (He has eight drinking
stations around the house, two for rums which is his drink of
choice). McCallan 25 year is to die for. But it would be a lottery-
winning day or a retirement celebration before I would buy a bottle...

 I like Highland Park.

I think that's a pretty good choice, too, if you prefer the lighter
varieties (which I do). We're not buying any more Scotch, though,
until we've finished off a few of the bottles on the shelves; over
the years we seem to have built up quite a respectable collection.
That includes Laphroig, Highland Park, Tallisker, Lagavulin, Islay,
Bowmore, seven different variants on the Glenmorangie theme, etc. -
over two dozen examples to choose from.

You can just about make out the different Glenmorangies here:

which is a shot from around a year ago.

I'm playing with a plug in that is supposed to make skin tones nicer.
This image has been pretty heavily stepped on.

 Technical:
 K10, A85/1.4 stopped well down, around F11.

Re: OT: Spirit Snobs

2007-12-26 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Last spring I bought a set of eight tasting sized samples of single
malt scotch, very small bottles sufficient for a 5-8 person tasting,
some of which were of 18 and 25 year olds that I knew were quite good
but a fifth bottle of which ran $100-260, the others ran in the
$30-70 range. I invited friends to a tasting and we went through them.

To my delight, Glen Rothes Select Reserve, about $45 or so per fifth,
was one of my favorites. I roll in the gutter with the rest of the
plebs, I guess. ]'-)

Since a fifth bottle lasts me typically 3 months, the way I pay
myself back for the luxury is go out for two fewer espresso coffee
drinks per week.
