Speyside malts are better. I was also partial to any type of Glenmorangie.

I always drink blends with ice. The scots drink their whiskey with a
bit of water added. It's basically the same effect. I do generally
drink single malts straight up, but not always. The notion that
scotch has to be drunk neat is a pretension that the scots don't
share.

In years past, the same brother-in-law who provided the Islay would give

Where are you going what's your laptop got hardware wise.

On my overseas trips earlier in the year all I brought was the laptop
power supply/cord. (Make sure you have the correct plug adapter for
whichever country you visit)

The hotels I stayed at (1 in China, 2 in Canada 1 in the U.S.) all
had internet connections in the room. All I had to do was plug in the
rooms supplied ethernet cable. I didn't worry about email applications
did everything via webmail. Some of the newer hotels are all
wireless too.

In recent years, I have traveled to the UK and Mexico with nothing

Call ahead to the hotel and ensure that they have wireless access in

A lot of hotels have wireless connections these days. Hopefully, your
laptop is equipped with the same. Some have ethernet connections, so
it's good to carry an ethernet cable. And of course you'll want to
take a standard telephone cable in case that's all that's available.
I haven't travelled in Europe in four or five years but last time
through I believe most of the hotels had progressed at least to
ethernet connections. In addition good hotels usually have a business
office with available computers and connections.

Try Laphroig ten year old. The Lagavulin will taste like honey after
the Laphroig. Every Islay I've sampled has a strong peaty flavor.
I've always thought they tasted like they were in a fire. I enjoy
that. Many don't. The Lagavulin is actually among the least medicinal
of the lot. By the way, the Scots drink them with a bit of water
added. Try the Lagavulin on the rocks, but don't tell anyone:-). As I
mentioned in another thread, the pretense among many non-Scot single
malt drinkers is that they have to be taken neat. That, of course,
  is wrong.

I use a couple of ice cubes per ounce of whisky. I've done this ever since I
heard the distillers themselves saying that one should be adding water to
 the spirit.
I suspect that by the time I get to the end of this bottle, I'll have a
 taste for it.

I just cracked the seal on a can of Pepsi Max.

I'm drinking it straight from the can which is in a stubbie holder.

Cheers,

A modem is for talking over the phone lines, and is nearly useless these
days. It is slow, and it is only usable if you have someone to call, a
service provider prepared to take the call and hook you to the net. Also,
hotels commonly charge a lot for phone usage.

Do I need a DSL modem or any other stuff?

No. In the unlikely case of a hotel providing that sort of hookup in
the rooms, they'd provide a modem.

I truly don't know what kind of line/interface/plug to expect at
the hotel... Are there many possible options?

Only two that matter, ethernet and wireless.

Some hotels will provide an ethernet jack; carry a cable if
your laptop has an ethernet interface. If not, consider
buying one; they are cheap.

Most recent laptops have 802.something wireless network
interfaces built in and many hotels and cafes provide a
link for that, usually free. If your laptop has that, it is
likely all you need. If not, buy a USB-to-wireless
adapter.

Modem works fine. Many hotels have modem hook-up. Look at the phone in the
room, usually they have a modem input next to the phone input on the back of
the phone. That does mean you will need an ISP that can be connected to using
a modem.

But all you really need is a wifi. Most laptops are wifi enabled and most
hotels have a hot spot to connect to. Or motel clusters share one hot spot.
Sometimes you have to pay for it (as part of your bill, that is most likely
using a modem), but most times you don't. Have both modem and wifi and you
should be covered.

I suggest, if you haven't, trying out wifi before you go. Find out where
there are free hot spots are in your town, most places have free hot spots
these
days somewhere, often near the city civic center, and try it out.

I don't know what it's like in Europe but that's been my experience in the
US. There are so many business travelers that need to use their laptops and
connect to their home offices that most motels have some sort of set-up,
usually a hot spot. DSL is unlikely. I never encountered it, but maybe things
have
changed in the last year or so. I, personally, on a trip to the South West
last year, usually only stopped at motels that included some type of Internet
connection. It was usually announced on the signs they have outside the office.

Re: OT: Connecting worldwide

2007-12-28 Thread Bob Sullivan
Dario,
As most have noted, in the USA a wireless connection or an ethernet
cable is usually provided.
The cable connection is most offered in big hotels, followed by wireless.
You can bring your own cable or borrow one if necessary.
It is ironic, but our Motels (Motor hotels for auto travelers) often
have free internet connections.
The fancy hotels want to charge you $10+ per day for connections.
Places like Starbucks Coffee shops (5,000+) and Panera Bread Sandwich
shops (1,500) have free wireless connections.
Most McDonald's (11,000+) have a pay wireless service.
I wouldn't put bank or credit card info on any wireless, but gmail is fine.
(And gmail was the fastest connection when in China a couple of years ago.)
Regards, Bob S.

Re: OT: Connecting worldwide

2007-12-28 Thread Eactivist
P.S. Okay, after reading the thread, yes, there was two places I stopped,
Holiday Inns, that provided DSL. But I didn't need to bring an Ethernet cable,
they had their own going into the wall. My laptop has an Ethernet port, so I
could use it. So make sure your laptop is both wifi enabled and has an
Ethernet port and you are covered.

When I traveled last year I was still using AOL with dial up and found it a
good back-up. If a motel didn't have wifi or an Ethernet cable, then they
usually had a modem port on their phones (which maybe most people don't
realize). I did take my own extra phone cord with me, no one provided it (and
I would
find out what was a local number, AOL can be called through local numbers,
so I would incur no extra phone charge). However, one usually has to pay, like
with AOL, for an ISP that will use modem connections. Now I connect with
with broadband to Comcast, so one has to pay for DSL connections too. Motels'
DSL, however, they use their own systems, so you don't need your own broadband
ISP for that.

As for Chuck's lawyers (and lawyers in general), they don't care if

last longer too I'd noticed Li batteries tend to die fast when camera
indicate half the charge or less. Just my 2¢...

  Roman,

I am pretty sure I remember Pentax recommending lithium rechargeables
*not* be used in the *ist DS, and presumably that applies for all of
the other AA-type cameras as well. They work, but the higher current
output isn't healthy for the AF motor IIRC.

Another vote for me for the Eneloops in my *ist DS, since I don't use
it much. It is nice to know the charge will be there when I want to
  use it occasionally.

  D

Checking my facts again, the Pentax manuals state which types of
batteries can be used (of which lithium rechargeables are not included).
Here is a pretty detailed explanation why, not from Pentax, but a very
 clear nonetheless.

Now consider a 4.8-6V circuit divided into 1.2-1.5V, typical 4x AA, or
even 2x CR-V3 (Li-Mn). You'll probably be fine with slight variances in
your AA like 1.6V that even push it up to 6.4V total. Now consider using
2x RCR-V3 (Li-Ion), which is chemically impossible of delivering
anything less than 6V, and has a nominal operation of 7.2V! That's 1.8V.
And if you take it off the charger, and it's not clamped, it could be as
over 8V high as 8.4V total, a whopping 2.1V divided!

Dario,

Most hotels have wireless internet access these days - although some
will charge you extra for it. Most new laptops and all new Mac portables
have wireless built in, or wireless add-on cards (that go in a slot in
the side) can be purchased.

I don't travel that frequently abroad, but last time I went to GFM, I
connected up via wireless at airports and so on, and on the mountainside
with a 3G card that I use in England regularly. Speed is pretty good and
for 25 GBP a month I have 'unlimited' upload/download (well - as
unlimited as corporate telecoms providers deem unlimited these days).

On the mountain at GFM I was able to get my email no problem at all.
There was an extra charge for going through Cingular or whatever it was.
Can't remember how much.

If you really want worldwide connections anywhere anytime, think sat-
phones ;-)

And having this would also allow for the lenses with FA-style AF

Quick test on the K10D and Vivitar 285HV proves they at least work.
Not bad for $60.00, including postage of $10.00 from Hong Kong.

Thats pretty good.

Aspirin was once a trade name. The company that owned it failed to protect
it though flagerant infringement abounded. After some time they attempted to
assert their trademark rights in court only to find they had lost them
through negelect. The term was deemed to have become common usage with the
company's tacit approval! Folks with trademarks *need* to protect them if
they want to keep them.

A wee bit if water brings out and enhances the aroma and that's a lot of

Pouring room temp scotch over ice does the same thing, by dissolving a

I like Islay more than any other whisky by a long way. It is an
acquired taste. It took me about half a second to acquire it after my
first sip. There are shops here where they sell cask strength whisky -
you must add water to it for it to be drinkable. If you've had it cask
strength it's disgusting.

However, my favourite drink is beer, and I'd like to say a big warm
thankyou to God for giving us Belgian monks.

Re: K10D, AF button question

2007-12-28 Thread P. J. Alling
The AF button is an electronic connection. The screwdriver mechanism is
probably released by a purely mechanical linkage in the lens release
button or the auto focus selector switch on Pentax cameras. At least
that seems to be the way it works since battery power is not necessary.

Adam Maas wrote:
Yes, this would be great functionality, I miss that capability from my
Maxxum 7 (Whose AF/MF button is explicitly for this functionality).
And having this would also allow for the lenses with FA-style AF
clutches to switch the camera in and out of AF mode (Like is possible
with some Nikons), making those diengagable focus rings a whole lot
more useful. As it is, they just mean you have to do two things to
switch the lens to MF (or AF).

 -Adam

On 12/28/07, Boris Liberman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Well, I understand that now, though I think you would agree that it
could have been really neat if by pressing the AF button you could
 retract the AF screwdriver...

 Rod Connan wrote:

I understand this setting simply as a means to disable AF on half press.
Thus, repeated 1/2 presses of the shutter release do NOT cause the AF to
activate, so long as you have the AF button pressed.

Too hard for my simple mind in the opportunistic type of shooting I enjoy so
I do not use that option.

The focus switch is your tool to do what you describe :))

I am currently enjoying my ivth glass of 12yo Glenfiddich or I wouldn't
respond to this obvious flame bait ;-)
You want Lighter fluid??? try Lidl own brand 'Hunters Glen' blended
Scotch, or worse still French 'punch' white rum (shudder).

Drew.

That sounds like Army tea you can have it any way you like it, as
long as you like it hot, milky and sweet.

GESO: Grace on Christmas Morn'

2007-12-28 Thread Paul Stenquist
A small gallery of my small granddaughter. All shot with DA 16-45/4.
Most at f4.5 and 1.25th, with the 560 flash bounced off the ceiling.
Color temperature wanders a bit due to Grandpa's negligence in
processing these. But they're just snapshots. No art here. But may be
of interest to Gracie fans:-).

You forgot stewed and bitter.

If you enjoy tea, you owe it to yourself to try a Bodum tea press.
After the tea has reached the strength you desire you just push down
the plunger, and the tea leaves get sealed away, so there's no way
the bitter extracts get to spoil the flavour of the tea.
You get the same effect with tea bags or tea balls, of course, so I
didn't expect the Bodum to make much of a difference. I was wrong.
