Love light - Jordan Cronenweth

2008-01-14 Thread Derby Chang

I've always had this thought in my mind. No matter how good or bad a
film is, in a professional film at least, the consistent factor is the
editing and the DOP. It can be a really crappily acted, directed,
costumed, recorded, written film. But the editing and the cinematography
is at least interesting to watch.

And then, when everything else comes together, the editing and the
cinematography is glorious.

If you have a chance to watch the the Ultimate Collector's 5-disc
edition of Blade Runner, there is a little short on Jordan Cronenweth,
the DoP, in the Enhancement Archive disc. Normally I fast forward
through these self-congratulatory features, but his work on this film
still amazes me. I recommend, if you love still or moving phototography,
to get this set, watch all 5 versions of the film, and then be moved by
the Jordan feature.

Photo.net talks back

2008-01-14 Thread Paul Stenquist
David Savage and Carl G sent me screen shots of my photo.net page and
alerted me to the fact that non-subscribers don't see the same nice,
clean page that subscribers see. I wrote to Josh, the photo.net site
director, and told him I wasn't pleased. I included the URLs and
screen shots. Here is Josh's reply.

Rick and Paul,

I'm replying to the two of you together because you wrote me at
virtually the same time regarding the same issue. You can pass this
along to the pentax mailing list if you like. [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the
address that any replies should be directed to.

A few things to know:

1. Yes, non-subscribers see more ads on the site than subscribers.

2. International viewers see different ads than N. American viewers,
this has to do with the different ad providers we use. A N. American
company doesn't want to advertise in Germany and vice versa.

3. From the screenshots that were included with Paul's email, someone
is seeing ads that they shouldn't be seeing. Flashing/jumping you are
a winner ads should not be on photo.net.

Now, there are a couple reasons that could be the cause of #3:

A. If only one or two people are actually seeing flashing/jumping ads,
then their computers may be infected with spyware.

B. There may have been a bait and switch pulled on the site.
Sometimes an advertiser will present one ad for approval that will get
through our filters, then switch it with another ad when they think we
aren't paying attention. This is a particular problem with
international ads. Probably because the crap companies know we are
based in the USA and won't catch on as quickly.

C. Full screenshots (including the URL bar of your browser) are needed
to get rid of these ads. We need to know where on the site they are
showing up. Copying the link that they are trying to send you to is
also useful (if you know how to do that without actually visiting
their site).

Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Having struggled with the limited caps, particularly 77-th, I finally

The most generous PDMLer who helped me to procure the 43 ltd gets my

Well, I am a complete man again, in fact complete++, 'cause I have now

Going price for photo licensinng

2008-01-14 Thread Rick Denney
Folks,

A charitable organization in Texas is using some of my photos in their
materials. I support their cause and am happy to provide them the
photos for free. But I want it shown as a charitable donation so I can
get a deduction on my taxes.

Question is: How to price the licensing of photos for use in print
materials. I want to claim a credible price--something an organization
like that would legitimately pay if everyone was so inclined.

They are using half a dozen of my photos in their fund-raising
brochures, which they will be putting the San Antonio Missions NHP
gift shops and visitor's center. I expect the print run to be in the
tens of thousands.

Craving advice.

I could name a couple dozen examples, but let's look at, say, Bill

it. He also understands that he can be a bit of an asshole at times.
For the most part, Bill is a generous, helpful and knowledgeable
contributor to the list, and the PDML is better for having him
aboard. There are stretches of time in which he should be beaten
about the head and shoulders with a blunt instrument.

It is because of his positive record that Good Bill is afforded PDML
indulgence when he turns into Evil Bill. Same with most everyone who
posts at least semi-regularly to the list, myself included.

Only a bit of an asshole?
Obviously I need to work harder at this.

Re: Going price for photo licensinng

Subject: Going price for photo licensinng

Often in this sort of situation, the client themselves can be your best
resource. Ask them what they have paid for (or issued reciepts for) this
type of thing in the past, or what they would expect to pay, were you a less
than generous person.

I could name a couple dozen examples, but let's look at, say, Bill
Robb. I know I can point to him because he's a big boy and can take

Re: Hilarious K20D photo

2008-01-14 Thread P. J. Alling
It's still speculation that the K20D will actually officially replace
and not supplement the K10D in the Pentax Line. Pentax was aiming at
having three DSLRs in their line at the same time. Right now
Pentaximaging.com, (Pentax USA), has only two. Heck I never did see a
K110d in the actual plastic during it's entire existence, and it
hasn't been on the Pentaximaging web site for at least 6 months, maybe
longer. I suspect either the K10D or the K100D super will remain as
part of the official product line for some time to come.

I would claim $300 per photo, which is the average price of royalty-free
stock. If an organization like that were to license commercial photos that
would undoubtedly purchase royalty-free stock and would probably look for a
better price than what I've quoted. But you can legitimately claim $300
per.

There is no doubt the guy deserves it. But that is the
problem with censorship, it starts with those who deserve it
and expands to those who the censors dislike, and soon
becomes censorship of ideas rather than behavior.

As a host, I reserve the right to put controls on people who come into my
house. If you cross into what I consider unacceptable behaviour, I
 reserve
the right to ask you to either mind your manners or leave. I reserve the
right to put limits on what you can say or do when on my property.
This is not censorship, it is me saying that your rights end at the tip
 of
my nose, and do not supercede my rights to the enjoyment of what I have
 bought and paid for.

Doug owns the house we are conversing in, and I think it inappropriate
 for
anyone to criticize him, even obliquely, for the rules he chooses to

I'd recommend: that's a great way to increase flare and reduce image

My recommendation is to get a deeper than stock hood for both the 43

than the slide off and get lost stock caps, I agree.

The forum's been hammered into the ground all afternoon. Just warning
you. And the photo's are unimpressive (not the camera's fault, they're
poor snapshots). The only ones of any real use in predicting camera
performance are the 'ISO 6400 crops'. If they're legit it looks like
the K20D will rival the A700 in high ISO performance, but not the
D300.

My recommendation is to get a deeper than stock hood for both the 43

I don't use filters on any of my lenses anymore (besides a cir. polarizer

Have I mentioned how much I love my DA21? I've been shooting with it about 85%

on the subject of beautiful cinematography, and Ridley Scott, be sure
to watch The Duellists (again, if necessary). It was Scott's first
feature, made on a miniscule budget mostly in natural light, and
heavily influenced cinematographically by Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. It's
probably one of my top 5 all-time favourites.

Another great cinematographer is Vittorio Storaro, responsible for
(among other things) The Sheltering Sky, The Last Emperor, Last Tango
in Paris, Apocalypse Now!, 1900, etc...

I've always had this thought in my mind. No matter how good or bad a

film is, in a professional film at least, the consistent
 factor is the
editing and the DOP. It can be a really crappily acted, directed,
costumed, recorded, written film. But the editing and the
 cinematography
is at least interesting to watch.

And then, when everything else comes together, the editing and the
 cinematography is glorious.

If you have a chance to watch the the Ultimate Collector's 5-disc
edition of Blade Runner, there is a little short on Jordan
 Cronenweth,
the DoP, in the Enhancement Archive disc. Normally I fast forward
through these self-congratulatory features, but his work on this
film
still amazes me. I recommend, if you love still or moving
 phototography,
to get this set, watch all 5 versions of the film, and then
 be moved by
 the Jordan feature.

 Folks,

A charitable organization in Texas is using some of my photos in their

photos for free.

 Craving advice.

Ah, but the images were posted by a fellow from Slovenia. As I recall, that is
where the MZ-S was first shown. Therefore they must be authentic.

The best early information about new cameras consistently comes from Slovenia,
Malta, and Russia.

PESO - Forest

2008-01-14 Thread Bruce Dayton
I'd like your feedback on which version of this you like better.
First one has a very minor crop and the second was me taking a fresh
look at the scene later and make a fairly large crop. Or you may not
like it altogether - even that information is useful.

Pentax K10D, DA* 16-50/2.8 @ 19mm
ISO 800, 1/15 sec @ f/6.7, handheld, Anti-shake on

Very minor crop:

Big crop:

A Mustang owners club wants to do a calendar using photos of members' cars.
Ford's lawyers object.

So does your next photo need a model release from every company
whose products happen to be in it? This is insanity!

Why am I not surprised.

The question being, though *My glasses are clean but my mind isn't. is
currently the leading quote, wouldn't **You can never have too many
lenses. be more appropriate, (and more a likely candidate for a t-shirt
that most members would wear. (I'm being totally non biased here, I'm
not responsible for either of these quotes).*

I would not buy a T shirt saying 'My glasses are clean but my mind isn't'.

I would buy a T shirt saying 'You can never have to many lenses'.

In relatively small, understated lettering, no graphics.

XXlarge. Light blue with dark font.

Please.

Thanks, y'all! It looked pretty darn neat. There's a place in SF that

I'll be in the city again later in the week.

Do they do a test fold as well??

 Um, John ... !!

Oh Godfrey, you know it's not true. I live in a condo; I don't have a back

Me, I like the first crop better. I think it would also work well as a
monochrome conversion (though I haven't tried it so I could be wrong).
But I also think that this looks like a large-format kind of image :)
I love this kind of image!

I prefer the first, it has more balance. It's a nice quiet picture.
The composition of the other feels incomplete.
