About the only worries I have on my commute are broken glass on
the roads (only on a couple of streets) and drivers using cell
phones. I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the amount of people I see
using one of those things while driving. Put the damn thing
away and LEARN TO IGNORE IT if it rings!

Over here it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving if you are
not using a handsfree system.

An interesting film from the early 70s about a bespoke bicycle builder
 - Witcomb. They are still working, in fact they're booming at the
moment, with Barry Witcomb still running the place and making frames
by hand. It's in Deptford, about 2 miles from my house. Until November
last year the shop was just the same as you see on the video, but
they're in the middle of a refurbishment at the moment.

That's a weird rim at 3:52 - it has very few spoke holes.

You know what, I'd crop the bottom heavily, even lose the lower
firework, just have the stem and the flower ;-)

I had thought of that, but it loses the nice graduation of colours in
the sky that I think makes it.

It's doable to clone out the lower foreground details, but frankly
it's more effort than the shot is worth.

And I already spent too much time cloning out the powerlines that cut
through the scene 1/4 of the way from the bottom. :-)

It's an almost, but not quite shot. However I thought I'd share it anyway :-D

 Thanks Peter.

I'm not really sure, what they are for.

Every year the local Portuguese club has these fireworks. Someone once
suggested that it was a Catholic holiday/event/celebration (20th Jan).

 ?

These bike posts are called lollipops. I actually don't like them,
as it's too easy to scratch a frame on them.

I guess there are so many of them around the University of Toronto
that they get personalized ones - most say City of Toronto on
 them.

PESO - More Lassen Rocks

2008-01-21 Thread Eactivist
Just an ordinary shot. But posted as a follow up to the last.

A friend told me that driving up and down Lassen was not scary. But when I
got to the top and was about to drive down it (luckily there was a lookout at
the peak), I discovered the trees (pines) had totally disappeared. I would
have been driving down the OUTSIDE of the mountain, all bare rock, windy road,
narrow, very steep drop off. It was supremely scary TO ME, so I turned around
and went back down the way I had come.

I decided to go UP the other side. But instead of going back to the freeway,
about a 40 minute trip, I drove a back road to the other side.Lots of back
roads, tiny towns (2-3 stores), and no obvious way to connect to the road that
went to the mountain (there was one on the map). I got lost for an hour and
a half. Got further and further away from the mountain. Finally I gave up,
and luckily I was able to retrace my steps and find the road to the freeway.
So
I never saw the lava beds or the other side of the mountain. :-(

Made me wish for GPS.

On this side of the mountain were fields and fields strewn with rocks.
Obviously lava-type rocks that had been spewed through the air when Lassen
erupted
in the 1900's.

You can barely see Mt. Lassen in the background. I just thought the geology
was mildly interesting.

My most embarrassing travel story to date though.

OT: Computer Q

2008-01-21 Thread cbwaters
Hello,
This might be an easy question and I think I already have the answer but
it's beyond my usual and minute area of total understanding, so:

My printer can hook to my computer via USB, wired, or wireless networking.
I recently acquired a wireless network router/hub thingie so I have retired
my DSL modem and now have a few extra network ports now at my desk. I've
had my last couple of printers on USB and before that, well... that's been a
while anyway.
Should I configure the printer as a network device?
I don't have any other computers who might take advantage of the wireless
capabilities (yet).

I don't remember who suggested it but, there should be a tricameral
legislature, two houses dedicated to passing new laws, one dedicated to
repealing them. If the governor had no veto power of the third house it

Over here it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving if you are

Tht will soon (July 1st) be the situation in California, too.
This despite the fact that even the person who proposed the law
concedes studies have shown there is no significant difference
between using a hands-free and any other kind of mobile phone.
He'd like to ban all use of phones while driving, but knows he
doesn't have a hope of getting that passed. But this way he is
at least seen to be doing something, which is what matters if

That depends on the particular printer and the quality of the driver

I connect the printers via a USB hub to my desktop system. I have the

is of course password protected with encryption turned on) so that I

Using the printer as a network device doesn't really gain you anything,
(might even slow down printing depending on how well the networking is

My printer can hook to my computer via USB, wired, or wireless networking.
I recently acquired a wireless network router/hub thingie so I have retired
my DSL modem and now have a few extra network ports now at my desk. I've
had my last couple of printers on USB and before that, well... that's been a

Should I configure the printer as a network device?
I don't have any other computers who might take advantage of the wireless
capabilities (yet).

No, not if you don't have a network yet -- it's pointless and might slow
things down. You can reconfigure it later as a network printer when/if you set
up a network.

Thank you! I have been experimenting with shooting RAW a

There is a bike path which goes up along the East

I have the bottom feeder version of Ulead, and it does not seem to let
me do anything. The Cap Wizaed that also came with the device is
buggy, but would lwt me adjust on download, but its not working at all
now.

I guess i have to reshoot

Over the years I have been using Ulead's Video Studio product and the
more recent versions have been shipping with video filters that can be
applied for things such as color correction and brightness and

you want. That is providing there is some image captured. You might
want to look at some of the video editors out there.

The BL on my old, 1999, Panasonic anolog recorder worked great, but it
seems on this new Sony HDD, i turned on night light, not back light.

The arena has plastic windows all around it about 6 feet up from the
ground, and creates havoc.

I'll try some with and with out

to be for printing on fabric but I'm glad to hear it looks OK.

Final Cut Pro can do exposure adjustments on video but it's kind of
expensive and of limited use if exposure is too far off.

I haven't actually decided for myself if I like this one yet:
http://www.robertstech.com/temp/7d800430_StorytellersRock.jpg

Partially desaturated -- because I didn't like the look of any true
monochrome conversions I did and I didn't care for the full-color
version either.
