Re: Advice for Applying Grain
This is the way I do in in PS. 1. Add a new layer and fill it with 50% gray (RGB 128,128,128) Set the layer blend mode to overlay 2. Use Filter/Noise/Add Noise Tick Gaussian + Monochromatic. 3. Adjust noise amount to taste I usually end up with anything between 0.5% to 15%. This naturally depends on the image. 4. Adjust the layer opacity to fine tune the effect. I Sometimes I apply a bit of unsharp mask to the noise layer but it does not always give a pleasing result. Re: Advice for Applying Grain
I actually have a grain sample, can't remember where I got it, I usually create a second layer paste it into that and adjust the blending, opacity and fill, sometimes curves on just that layer to get the grain effect I'm looking for. It's not always effective but works well other times. Done that way you can always revert to the original image and not lose any other adjustments made afterward by simply deleting the grain layer. Then again I'm not sure if PSE5 supports layers. Christine Aguila wrote: Hi Everyone: I've been fooling around with applying grain, but I really don't know what I'm doing. Re: Firebird
Thanks Frank. Glad it brought back some good memories. I was a Pontiac fan as a teenager as well. You mightremember that in the early sixties, they dominated NASCAR for a while. And Mickey Thompson went 415 mph at Bonneville with his Pontiac-powered Challenger streamliner. I wanted a 67 GTO with the same color scheme as this Firebird. A guy I knew had one. I hated him. I did have a Pontiac powered 34 Ford and later a little dragster with a Pontiac engine. Couldn't keep head gaskets in the dragster motor on stiff doses of nitromethane because Pontiac engines had only ten head bolts. That caused me to fall out of love:-). (Although on one of the rare occassions that the head gaskets stayed where they belong, Iit went 187 mph in 8.65 seconds. Not bad for a normally aspirated car at the time.) Interesting, as far as it goes. And relevant in regard to journalism and crime photography. I think your title misleads a bit. The article speaks of restoring the credibility of a photograph -- that is, developing a method of determining that a photo hasn't been altered when that is important. It says nothing about restoring photography's credibility. But I suspect that distinction was inadvertent on your part. Re: fwd: Effort Made To Restore Photography's Credibility
Photographs have never had integrity. Photographers have integrity. You can pick the angle and location for your shot to tell a story as you see it, then your editor can crop it to change it their bias and still not ever have manipulated the shot. The fact that we can now clone realistic faeries or flying saucers into our pictures or turn bystanders into thriller style zombies to tell absolute lies hasn't changed the basic premise. The problem with the technological solutions is that they can always go wrong. If there's no accounting for transmission error, (say a bit or two or three gets flipped), then suddenly the image has been altered, even if no actual change is made to the viewed image or actual intent to change it has been made. If there's some tolerance for this type of thing then a bright guy will figure out a metric to modify photos and keep within the envelope. A more complex system might or might not take a little longer. What it will always come down to is can you trust your source or not. Once a source has proven itself to be untrustworthy gaining back that trust is very difficult. Hum, maybe that's why AP is carrying this story... From what I saw, the 40D had better overall noise control, but colour noise was far better controlled on the K20D, similar to the Nikon D300's tradeoff (Although the D300 is better in both respects to the 40D). Colour noise is far more objectionable than luminance noise. -Adam On 2/26/08, Thibouille [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/184452-post1.html Really not that bad. Re: Effort Made To Restore Photography's Credibility
Interesting article. Thanks for posting. I attended several Evidence Photographers International Council meeting years ago this was the subject of much discussion then. Some of the ideas mentioned in the article were discussed @ these meetings it was felt by some that any of these measures could be overcome. It seemed to be the concensus then, that digital photography had the same issues as wet photography, in so far as evidence presentation goes, but it was much easier for someone to digitally alter an image. It all boils down to the credeability of the one who took the image. When I've testified in product litigation trials, a main point in the presentation of my inspection images was that I took the images they are a true accurate dipiction of what I saw on the day of my inspection. The images are only as credeable as the testifier. Remote assistant 3 included along with PictureBridge Photolab 3 Nearly identical to the K10D - will be difficult to tell them apart by feel. More options on the set-up screens and haven't touched custom settings yet. Picture display goes to 32X zoom vs 20x? for the K10D...seems like lots more detail. It's a mighty big sensor folks! The images are only as credeable as the testifier. Absolutely. People forget this too easily. - Original Message - From: Ken Waller Subject: Re: Effort Made To Restore Photography's Credibility It all boils down to the credeability of the one who took the image. When I've testified in product litigation trials, a main point in the presentation of my inspection images was that I took the images they are a true accurate dipiction of what I saw on the day of my inspection. The images are only as credeable as the testifier. Therein lies the real problem though. With digital images so very easy to alter compared to a film image, all it takes is a less than honest expert testifier who has an agenda of his own to ruin someone's life. If you are a testifier for the prosecution, the pressure to come up with evidence that supports the case must be extraordinary, and I would be willing to bet that expert witnesses who don't support a prosecutors predisposed view of the case won't be asked to testify all that often, which has a negative impact on the bottom line of the witness. It is made worse by prosecutors who feel they need to get convictions rather than conduct fair trials. The legal system is now more political process than due process, with the bludgeoning hand of the state often more criminal than the criminals themselves, and expert testifiers often just part of a charade designed to get people convicted of crimes they didn't commit, and generally not rich enough to take on the bottomless well of resources that the prosecution has at his disposal. As an example, Canada is having kittens at the moment over a forensic pathologist who's innacurate, misleading incompetant or dishonest, depending on your point of view, testimonies over several decades has ruined the lives of a number of innocent people, and whose credibility remained unquestioned for decades as well. The last person who should be trusted as a credible witness is a person who is being paid by the prosecution. I tend to consider my photographs a document of what was visible within the frame when I pressed the little button. As such I rarely remove anything other than dust. I don't recall ever adding anything to a photo. But Bill's right. Altering photographs is not a sin so long as you don't claim they weren't altered. I do think the nature of the photograph and it's intended audience should help you decide. A while back Shel presented us with a photo taken in a diner back in the 60s or 70s. The menu, with prices, was visible, as were a few people (clothing, hair, etc. all fit the time frame). There was also a napkin holder on a counter which quite a few of the folks around here thought detracted from the photograph. Shel was encouraged to remove it and he eventually did. I still think of this photo as an historical document that should not have been tampered with in that manner. Re: Advice for Applying Grain
Peter: I can do a bit of layering in PSE5, and I'm just starting to teach myself this, so your advice here helps. Thanks. Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: P. J. Alling [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2008 7:21 AM Subject: Re: Advice for Applying Grain I actually have a grain sample, can't remember where I got it, I usually create a second layer paste it into that and adjust the blending, opacity and fill, sometimes curves on just that layer to get the grain effect I'm looking for.
