Hi Scott

Quoting Scott Loveless [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Hey, gang. I have stacks upon stacks of handwritten and typed
 pages
that I'd like to digitize. My scanner came with some OCR software,

Omnipage SE, I think, but I've lost the CD. Do any of you use OCR

software and can you recommend something? Thanks!

 --

I use ABBYY Finereader Pro - I need to scan quite a few articles for a web site
I maintain. It works so well I've never even looked at anything else.

Mine is an old version - came as a magazine cover disk 4 or 5 years ago.

You can download a trial version but I don't think it's especially cheap if you
want to buy it.

http://download.abbyy.com/content/default.aspx

There's a free product called 'Simple OCR'. Might be worth a look but I've
never played with it.

Brilliant. Seriously, I like it a lot. The motion blur of the

GESO - DownTown San Jose

A group of local photographers got together last Sunday for
a couple of hours spent in downtown San Jose. Rather to my
surprise I seem to have ended up with a few people shots:

This one:

had several of the other shooters (Canon and Nikon users)
quite envious; it was fairly tricky light, so I just put the
K10D into TAv mode, set the shutter speed and aperture that
I wanted, and let the camera adjust the ISO (within reason).

Trying something different. Have a look at this:

 http://www.cottysnaps.com/snaps/spare4.html

R-D1 + 28mm lens (same angle of view as 42mm lens on full frame 35mm)

 Then take this simple test:

 1. What is noticeable about the picture?

A: The spot focus effect with the sot focus periphery

 2. How do you think it was achieved?

A: You placed an eyeglass lens over the camera lens, perhaps a graduated
multifocal lens. This might explain the severe aberrations. I'm also
guessing that chromatic aberration was so severe that BW rendition was the
only option.

These item photos were all taken with the

the f11 to f22 range at 1/180 top flash speed.

Did you have the A version or the F version? I have had both and my A
version is better than the F which I sold. Dont forget, I am talking about
near range usage and at small fstops like 11-22 because the flash is
powerful enough to allow those stops even at iso 200. I have no idea if its
any good at infinity or anywhere near wide open, but if used like I am using
it, its damn nice, not too expensive, and good build quality too.( I
ususally dont like most A lenses in terms of build, but this one aint bad.)

Tried one out at one point. It was alright, but not any better than the
18-55 DA in its range, larger, heavier, harder to manual focus due to lack
of contrast wide open at 24mm. Wasn't much impressed with it on digital. Of
course, I may have had a bad sample.

I have been using for about a month now the SMC PENTAX-A 24-50/4.0
Zoom almost exclusively ( mostly product photos for ebay on
tabletop ) on my *istDS DSLR. Its a two ring zoom so you never get
any annoying zoom creep and it holds focus perfectly when
zooming. The F4 speed is a little slow but the lens is so contrasty
that its easy to focus at 50mm ( I use a split image screen - third
party model - in my *istDS ). Anyway, after you figure in the 1.5X
lens factor you are left with a 35mm SLR equiv of 36mm to 75mm
which is a very versatile super normal lens. This model is
extremely contrasty, great color saturation, and freedom from
flaring. It works beautifully for tabletop product photography. I
have never needed wider or longer, as it has a pretty decent
magnification at 50mm and min focus. The constant aperture (F4 thru
the zoom range) is great when using manual full power flash like I
 like to do.
Anyway, if you do a lot of ebay or similar product photography for web,
I recommend this lens very highly. Much more versitile than a
prime or macro 50mm with the 24m capability.

I must add I have never used the stock 18-55mm that was sold
with the camera, but I doubt it can match this lens, let alone
beat it. Maybe it can? Anyone ever compared the two in the 24-50mm
   range?

Re: Seeking lens advice

Thanks, Tim.

I really like the DA 40, too. Today I picked up a DA* 50-135 and will
see how far that and the DA 40 will get me. By the time I know if I
really need a wide angle I'll hopefully also know how the K200D
performs at higher ISO settings, so then I can decide wether the extra
speed of the DA* 16-50 is worth the extra cash, or if the DA 21 will
be all right for me. My guess is that it will.

Scene modes are primarily specialized AE modes on non-Canon bodies.
Some also specify rendering options, but that's less common.

RE: GREAT general purpose Zoom for the Pentax DSLRS?

2008-03-12 Thread J. C. O'Connell
REGARDING THE DIFFRACTION PROBLEMS AT SMALL FSTOPS : From what I have
read and found via experience to be pretty true, is that diffraction
limit of a good designed lens is roughtly 1600/f-stop. this means
that at F-16 with a really good lens, you can still resolve up to
approx 100 lines/mm which is definately very sharp, even is small
formats like 35mm film or Pentax DSLRs. Even F22 could go about 70
lpmm and F32 50 lpmm which is not great but not completely horrible either.

Well, nothing is very sharp with f:22 and K10D as diffraction is
dominant, but most things are sharp at f:11. My problems wtih the lens
were at f:4-f:8. Apart from that I agree that the mechanics of the

Tried one out at one point. It was alright, but not any better than
 the
18-55 DA in its range, larger, heavier, harder to manual focus due
 to lack

extremely contrasty, great color saturation, and freedom from

Anyway, if you do a lot of ebay or similar product photography for

I must add I have never used the stock 18-55mm that was sold

 Subject: Seeking lens advice

 Hello.

I have recently bought a new K200D. I did photograph a lot until
 about
15 years ago, but have only used p+s cameras since then. So I
 figured
the K200D would be more than sufficient to get back into
 photography.
I am actually very satisfied with the camera.

But the bundled 18-55mm/3.5-5.8 lens is kind of dissapointing,
especially when compared to the 40mm/f2.8 limited that I also bought
with the camera (mainly beacuse it was so cute), which produces
beautifully sharp and crisp images. So I am now stuck with the 40mm
prime and need to buy some more glass.

My old analog setup contained a 50mm/1.4 Minolta prime (which I
 still
 own), a 28-85mm/2.8-something Minolta and a 100-400mm Minolta that I
loved (but which I sold). I've been digging around a little and come
up with the following lenses that seem like what I want, and I'd
 like
to ask those of you that own one of these for their opinions.
 Alternatives are also welcome.

smc DA* 50-135mm/2,8 ED [IF] SDM

 and

smc DA* 16-50mm/2,8 ED [IF] SDM or smc DA 21mm/3,2 ED [IF] SDM

I might also get something like the smc DA* 200mm/2,8 ED [IF] SDM
later, depending on how much I'll actually use the camera.

So I was wondering if the image quality of the 16-50mm/2,8 is
comparable to that of the 40mm/2,8 limited, or if I should rather go
with the 21mm and 40mm limiteds instead of the 16-50mm zoom. Is the
50-135mm worth the money, and are there alternatives? I like the
 fact
that it is weather sealed a lot. Can I use the old 50mm/1.4 Minolta
(from the late 80's) on the K200D with an adaptor? Is that
 recommendable?

I might add that I will be taking the thing into the mountains a
 lot,
and I like to sit in a cafe on a sunday and shoot passers by in the
 street.

 Thanks for any advice.

AF problems of my K10D

2008-03-12 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi!

It seems that AF of my K10D is slowly deteriorating. It started with my
new FA 43/1.9 Ltd that would not focus sometimes. That is, the lens
would be in focus, but electronics would not confirm - lost shot.

Today I went to the Jerusalem zoo with Galia's class. I took Tamron
28-75/2.8 - fine lens that focuses very fast and precise. Few times I
would point the lens at a sitting or standing buy or girl under bright
sun and the lens would go back and forth around focus point and
never converge. It wouldn't give up, it would just back and
forth - very annoying.

I switched to forced central point AF and went on shooting, but I am
really starting to fear that my K10D is going to the service.

Any ideas as to how to reset the darn thing or how to verify it so that
I can present a solid case to the local service people. The story such
as above may not impress them...

Thanks.

To do a *full* system reset on the camera, pull the battery and let it
sit for two-three days. You'll know it has fully reset if when you fit
a battery and turn it on it comes up asking for you to set the date.

Other possibles: dirty AF sensors or a poor electrical connection

I occasionally find I get this behavior with almost any lens. I remove

Before taking the camera in for repair, I would first test under controlled
conditions. If you're using the multipoint autofocus a lot of different things
can throw it off, particularly monochromatic scenes. Center point is good so
long as you have somthing contrasty to point at. Test with some medium and high
contrast targets. And with Pentax lenses. You have to confirm that it's the
camera and not the lens.

yes.

I think part of what's going on is that you're just getting over the
honeymoon period with a new camera body and some of its idiosyncracies
are becoming apparent to you.

I know that for the first six months I used the K10D, it seemed to be
about as flawless as I could hope for. Now that I'm used to its
performance and capabilities, every little niggle it might have is
immediately apparent when I go to use it. And particularly since I
have two other cameras now, each with their own strengths and
weaknesses, that I've used a lot too. Picking any one of them up now
reminds me of how it differs from the last one I used, each with its
own special joy and particular annoyance.

Things that I don't remember the K10D doing I find by looking at
photos I took with it 11 months ago ... yes, it did that all along. I
was simply not seeing it. And so forth.

Imperfect tools, imperfect perceptions... but by and large all the kit
I have works well enough that I'm the weak link in the system. ;-)

almost a year ago), it requires no special attention at all.

That's what I've been thinking but this is the very first time since
2002 (when I bought my first AF film body by Pentax) the AF of any
camera I ever held in my hands behaved that strangely. In fact, my
simple ZX-L (MZ-6) still works perfectly well in all regards, including AF.

Which liquid I could use to clean the mount contacts on the body?
Perhaps it is time I cleaned the mount properly?!

Generally I don't hmmm treat my gear any specially. I try not to abuse
it but that's about as far as it gets.

Cheers.

Nice exposure. While the wing is blurred as is more or less expected
the bird itself looks a little over sharpened, like you were trying to
over come subject movement with too much USM. I think it would look

it's movement.

They should not imply capture or in-camera processing modes and

If they're doing something other than that, well, it's no wonder I've

Ironically, the DA 40mm is actually a 35mm full-frame design, being an
update of the SMC-M 40mm f2.8 Pancake (albeit a very thorouhg update,
the original did not use Aspherical elements).

 Marcus

I ordered one today. I have a wedding coming up, and I struggle with the DA
50-200 indoors. Just too slow. It's fine for outdoor ceremonies, but low light
work is asking too much of it. Even with the expanded low-light capabilit of
the K20D I feel it's too much of a compromise. I got away with it once before
but lost too many shots due to camera shake.

find it adds a bit of modernity, so this isn't actually an attempt to
record a bygone era, but an attempt to record the present.

Welcome to the list. A nice pic and a good start.

Thanks

You could straighten the horizon a little more with a bit of
clockwise rotation. I realize the path the girl is on is slightly
uphill, but the horizon isn't quite aligned. I'd also burn in the
sky, first with the midrange tool, then with the highlight tool.
Finally, I'd clone that water tank out of there. But some would say
I'm extreme. So take it with a grain of salt.

Is that all? ;)

Anyway, I like the water tank ( which I actually think is a thing for
cleaning golf clubs or some other such golf related thing ). Plus
cloning stuff out never feels right to me.

Actually, *extremely* nice bollards. They have the authentic 'used', rusty
look. Just a pity about the green hose - it sort of spoils the mood.

I still think it's a green braided nylon rope.

And I still likes things nautical.

Agh...

There was some discussion of this nautical term a while back. I knew I
had taken a photo of an interesting looking bollard, nothing special,
more a record shot than anything else, but pretty much a classic
 bollard. So here it is.
