for an example, look at my completed auction item photos: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemrd=1item=230231132247 This isnt spam, the auction is already over. These item photos were all taken with the SMC-A 24-50, istDS @ISO200, built in flash, and at 4MP jpeg setting. Thanks, Tim. I really like the DA 40, too. Today I picked up a DA* 50-135 and will see how far that and the DA 40 will get me. By the time I know if I really need a wide angle I'll hopefully also know how the K200D performs at higher ISO settings, so then I can decide wether the extra speed of the DA* 16-50 is worth the extra cash, or if the DA 21 will be all right for me. RE: GREAT general purpose Zoom for the Pentax DSLRS?
REGARDING THE DIFFRACTION PROBLEMS AT SMALL FSTOPS : From what I have read and found via experience to be pretty true, is that diffraction limit of a good designed lens is roughtly 1600/f-stop. this means that at F-16 with a really good lens, you can still resolve up to approx 100 lines/mm which is definately very sharp, even is small formats like 35mm film or Pentax DSLRs. Even F22 could go about 70 lpmm and F32 50 lpmm which is not great but not completely horrible either. jco -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of DagT Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 6:59 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: GREAT general purpose Zoom for the Pentax DSLRS? I am actually very satisfied with the camera. But the bundled 18-55mm/3.5-5.8 lens is kind of dissapointing, especially when compared to the 40mm/f2.8 limited that I also bought with the camera (mainly beacuse it was so cute), which produces beautifully sharp and crisp images. So I am now stuck with the 40mm prime and need to buy some more glass. My old analog setup contained a 50mm/1.4 Minolta prime (which I still own), a 28-85mm/2.8-something Minolta and a 100-400mm Minolta that I loved (but which I sold). I've been digging around a little and come up with the following lenses that seem like what I want, and I'd like to ask those of you that own one of these for their opinions. Alternatives are also welcome. smc DA* 50-135mm/2,8 ED [IF] SDM and smc DA* 16-50mm/2,8 ED [IF] SDM or smc DA 21mm/3,2 ED [IF] SDM I might also get something like the smc DA* 200mm/2,8 ED [IF] SDM later, depending on how much I'll actually use the camera. So I was wondering if the image quality of the 16-50mm/2,8 is comparable to that of the 40mm/2,8 limited, or if I should rather go with the 21mm and 40mm limiteds instead of the 16-50mm zoom. Is the 50-135mm worth the money, and are there alternatives? I like the fact that it is weather sealed a lot. Can I use the old 50mm/1.4 Minolta (from the late 80's) on the K200D with an adaptor? Is that recommendable? I might add that I will be taking the thing into the mountains a lot, and I like to sit in a cafe on a sunday and shoot passers by in the street. Thanks for any advice. AF problems of my K10D
Hi! It seems that AF of my K10D is slowly deteriorating. It started with my new FA 43/1.9 Ltd that would not focus sometimes. That is, the lens would be in focus, but electronics would not confirm - lost shot. Today I went to the Jerusalem zoo with Galia's class. I took Tamron 28-75/2.8 - fine lens that focuses very fast and precise. Few times I would point the lens at a sitting or standing buy or girl under bright sun and the lens would go back and forth around focus point and never converge. It wouldn't give up, it would just back and forth - very annoying. I switched to forced central point AF and went on shooting, but I am really starting to fear that my K10D is going to the service. Any ideas as to how to reset the darn thing or how to verify it so that I can present a solid case to the local service people. The story such as above may not impress them... Thanks. To do a *full* system reset on the camera, pull the battery and let it sit for two-three days. You'll know it has fully reset if when you fit a battery and turn it on it comes up asking for you to set the date. Other possibles: dirty AF sensors or a poor electrical connection between lens and body. I occasionally find I get this behavior with almost any lens. I remove and replace the lens and it goes away. Re: AF problems of my K10D
Before taking the camera in for repair, I would first test under controlled conditions. If you're using the multipoint autofocus a lot of different things can throw it off, particularly monochromatic scenes. Center point is good so long as you have somthing contrasty to point at. Test with some medium and high contrast targets. And with Pentax lenses. You have to confirm that it's the camera and not the lens. Godfrey Godfrey, do you mean that you unmount the lens and then mount it back? yes. I think part of what's going on is that you're just getting over the honeymoon period with a new camera body and some of its idiosyncracies are becoming apparent to you. I know that for the first six months I used the K10D, it seemed to be about as flawless as I could hope for. Now that I'm used to its performance and capabilities, every little niggle it might have is immediately apparent when I go to use it. And particularly since I have two other cameras now, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, that I've used a lot too. Picking any one of them up now reminds me of how it differs from the last one I used, each with its own special joy and particular annoyance. Things that I don't remember the K10D doing I find by looking at photos I took with it 11 months ago ... yes, it did that all along. I was simply not seeing it. And so forth. Imperfect tools, imperfect perceptions... but by and large all the kit I have works well enough that I'm the weak link in the system. ;-) Godfrey -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Godfrey, in a nutshell you're telling me, that my K10D is perfectly normal and that except, may be cleaning (last cleaned by local service almost a year ago), it requires no special attention at all. That's what I've been thinking but this is the very first time since 2002 (when I bought my first AF film body by Pentax) the AF of any camera I ever held in my hands behaved that strangely. In fact, my simple ZX-L (MZ-6) still works perfectly well in all regards, including AF. Which liquid I could use to clean the mount contacts on the body? Perhaps it is time I cleaned the mount properly?! Generally I don't hmmm treat my gear any specially. I try not to abuse it but that's about as far as it gets. Cheers. Nice exposure. While the wing is blurred as is more or less expected the bird itself looks a little over sharpened, like you were trying to over come subject movement with too much USM. I think it would look better if thats the case if you had let the bird be a little soft from it's movement. Gaëtan Beauchamp wrote: Hello everyone. This is my second post. Re: Price for the DA 300/4 and 200/2.8
If I had the A*300/4, I would probably be content as well. But I haven't had a 300 since I sold my SMC Tak 300/4 a few years back. And since I shoot both cars and nature, I'd like a lens in that focal length. Sometimes my A 400/5.6 is just too long. That extra stop is great to have as well. If I were a wealthy man, I'd want an even faster long telephoto, but $1299 is pretty much my ceiling on lens expenditures. However, I'm thankful that it's going to be that affordable. Paul -- Original message -- From: P. J. Alling [EMAIL PROTECTED] Compared to what the equivalent FA lenses sell for on ebay they're a just a bargain. I did photograph a lot until about 15 years ago, but have only used p+s cameras since then. So I figured the K200D would be more than sufficient to get back into photography. RE: Seeking lens advice
I ordered one today. I have a wedding coming up, and I struggle with the DA 50-200 indoors. Just too slow. It's fine for outdoor ceremonies, but low light work is asking too much of it. Even with the expanded low-light capabilit of the K20D I feel it's too much of a compromise. I got away with it once before but lost too many shots due to camera shake. I realize the path the girl is on is slightly uphill, but the horizon isn't quite aligned. I'd also burn in the sky, first with the midrange tool, then with the highlight tool. Finally, I'd clone that water tank out of there. But some would say I'm extreme. So take it with a grain of salt. Is that all? ;) Anyway, I like the water tank ( which I actually think is a thing for cleaning golf clubs or some other such golf related thing ). Plus cloning stuff out never feels right to me.
