GESO, Hellyer Park
A couple of days ago I noticed a tree set off againsf flowers on a hillside near my office. Today, a little before sunset, I took some time to go back and shoot it. While I was there I noticed a tree and a puddle in Hellyer park and took some pictures of them. As it turns out, none of the shots of the first tree turned out very well. These were all shot with my K100Ds and my 18-250. It's real: I'm reporting my observations. There's nothing wrong with the lens, but it does show both CA and fringing in the normal amounts I see from premium mid- range zoom lenses. At least my example did. It's not the most-CA-less lens I've seen from Pentax by any means. This does not mean it is a bad lens. Paranoia or anti-paranoia ... I guess it makes just as much silliness whichever side of the fence you decide to be defensive about. ;-) Its well documented that the 16-50 is all over the map for performance. I suspect with a lens as poorly put together as this one that decentering isn't going to be the only optical problem that manifests on one lens but not another. A good 16-50, while rare, is a good lens, I suspect that most of them are pretty average performers, with some are just plain bad. On Sat, Mar 21, 2009 at 7:26 PM, John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com wrote: The real problem with it is the CORPORATION's POLICY and copyright law. Somewhere, the CORPORATION has a POLICY that says the photolab will not reproduce copyright works or photos by professional photographers. The CORPORATION I work for has one. Ninety-nine and forty-four one hundredths percent of the time it ain't gonna' be no problem. But it only takes ONE TIME to fuck up the rest of your life. According to the DMCA copyright law, those photos are NOT the property of the bride and groom, they're the property of the photographer who took the photos. The DMCA copyright law is written so that the OWNER of the photolab equipment and the *OPERATOR* of the photolab are liable for the violation instead of the customer who uses the equipment. The DMCA copyright law allows the photographer to SUE THE PHOTOLAB and collect $500,000 per instance of copyright infringement; where each photograph printed is defined as one instance. The CORPORATION POLICY is there just in case a photographer does sue the photolab to enforce their copyright, the CORPORATION can use that POLICY to push all of the liability off onto the poor schlub running the equipment. Of course, if you're that poor schlub, you're between a rock and a hard place. If you follow the CORPORATION's POLICY and the customer complains, MANAGEMENT will shit all over you. You'll get at least a reprimand for pissing off the customer, and you might get fired for poor customer relations just for following the CORPORATION's POLICY. And if you don't follow the CORPORATON's POLICY, they can use that any time they want an excuse to fire you and leave you all alone to face the legal liabilities for violating the DMCA copyright law. Because the DMCA copyright law says the equipment OWNER and/or OPERATOR are the liable parties. The CORPORATION POLICY shields the company and leaves all the liability on the operator who didn't follow the CORPORATION POLICY. I have to walk a fine line all the time. As long as I don't KNOW the customer is violating the DMCA copyright law, I can ignore what they're doing. They can use that instant printing kiosk all day long and I won't interfere - as long as I can get away with denying I knew they were violating the DMCA copyright law, and plausibly claim I would have enforced the CORPORATION POLICY if only I had known. If the customer does something that forces me to acknowledge they're printing copyrighted images, like asking me to help them do so, I'll call the store manager, point out the relevant CORPORATION POLICY to the manager and leave the manager to explain to the customer why the photolab can't print their photos. And if the customer sends it through the one hour printer and it's got Olan Mills or Life Touch Studios or J.C. Penney's Studio or ANY OTHER copyright notice on the face of the image, I'll stop the job, and again I'm calling the manager over and dumping it off on him. He can deal with the customer when they come looking for their photos. He can explain the CORPORATION POLICY regarding copyrighted images. I'm fairly flexible. I don't balk at someone trying to copy their grand-parents portrait from the 20s, 30s or 40s. And I won't get bent out of shape over old school photos and such, even from the 50s, 60s or 70s. In fact, I'll use all the magic I can to get them something special. But I ain't touchin' anything printed on modern professional paper that has the copyright notice pre-printed or stamped on the back. And if a CD or DVD has the photographer's name on it or if the images have the photographer's name embedded in the image, they gotta have a release. It can be the first JPEG on the disc, that's the easiest way to do it from the lab's point of view, because I can see the release right there on the selection screen ... but they gotta have a release of some kind. I'm covering MY ass! Refusing to allow myself to be left holding the bag if a legal shit-storm descends on that photolab don't make me an idiot, sniveling or otherwise. I was thinking of a square crop, which would have ended right where you suggest, at the bus stop sign (all we can see is the handicap portion at the bottom of that sign), but I thought that the extra waiting riders put things more in a place. However, maybe I'll do that square crop and see what you and others think. GESO - My Daughter's Work
Some of you may remember my older daughters work over the years. I have posted a few of their images from time to time. My second daughter is in her first year of college. For this past Christmas she received my old *istD along with a couple of lenses (her favorite being an A 35-105/3.5). While out at college she has started to really do some shooting. Re: New gear, but now I have a decision to make...
Bruce, I switched brands - and formats often when I was working with photography. Sold most of my cameras to buy different ones I needed or offered some feature that would make my work easier. One camera - a Sinar 4x5 was absolutely needed to make some photos I had interest. Used Canon Fd, Nikon, Pentax 67, Mamyia 645, Hasselblad, Kowa... Old Rollei and Yashica TLRs, and before I bought some waterresistant point and shoot I took some bikini shots with a Fuji waterrresistant disposable. Need to work, will use. Not switching a work tool to a better one because it's pretty or has sentimental value is foolish, IMHO. Pentax gear is with me all the way since 1976 - so I guess it's not exactly a tool for the job. LF Bruce Dayton escreveu: Well, you raise an interesting point. Many talk of jumping ship, but not too many actually do. What happens is you have to differentiate between a justifiable need and a want. When you look at your current investment in a system, then you really start to figure out the real needs. There can be needs that are not satisfied by a particular manufacturer. For most 'normal' hobby level shooting, every manufacturer provides more than enough features. But for specialized situations where a Pro would be paid, a particular manufacturer may not have just the right features or gear. I think many times, it is the envy issue. It would be nice to have the brand/gear that everyone else looks up to rather than having the brand/gear that most people either don't know or have a mediocre opinion of. I think many are saying that Pentax needs to provide everything every other manufacturer does so they can be more respected. -- Luiz Felipe luiz.felipe at techmit.com.br http://techmit.com.br/luizfelipe/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: New gear, but now I have a decision to make...
Bob, here in BR a working Mx runs $100 to $150 with lens - that could be usable. Repairing my 2nd Mx should almost reach that value, but I get a camera good for some 5 years more - I don't take as many photos as I'd like. Still can't put money in a second Mx unless it's the cheaper way to get a second working camera in my bag - and I'd rather have the Lx or the Pz1p repaired, to benefit of their functions. Too bad their repair is more expensive. LF Bob Sullivan escreveu: Luiz, In sympathy... I still have rolls of film in the PZ-1 and MZ-S from when I purchased my first digital. I can't bring myself to sell mine. Keep it for nostalgia. The MX cameras are nice, but have suffered heavy useage. Repair will be more expensive than finding a low milage used copy. Regards, Bob S. I'm facing a tough choice - wich cameras to keep, wich cameras to let go - and where. I have, currently on sick bay: Mx body, exterior good, broken diaphragm lever, a single risk on the lensmount and shutter erratic. Pentax techs in Sao Paulo believe they can repair it. It's my second Mx body, bought as is for $30. Keep it for parts? Lx body, auto off, mirror working ok but needing alignment, exterior fair. Techs say it's possible, but not probable to make it work. Repair it later or just spend the cash on other things Pentax? Gift from a friend currently using Canon. I'm watching BR ebay-like sites, and right now is the wrong time to sell anything 35mm around here - Pentax in particular. Problem aggravated by the fact those cameras are not working and Pentax tech in BR is not so near. I really don't know what to do. Any ideas? Please??? PS: since I can't rely on just one camera, I accepted as payment for some old debts a Canon EOS 500n + 50mm 1.8 and 28~80 whatever, the camera in fair condition but lenses very good. I'd like to sell it and pay the repair of one or two of those cameras, but that means only one 35mm camera until the repairs are successful (if). As you know, I no longer had an MX, but I did have a winder, a motor drive, and a 250 exposure back, as well as a Pentax cartridge loader for same. (and both kinds of dial backs and a polaroid back and all the screens) But the other day I saw a 17mm ƒ4 K-mount lens on eBay I wanted (LBA) and it came with an MX body. When it arrived, it turned out the MX had hardly ever been used. No scratches, no dents, still had the plastic cover on the baseplate, and it wasn't scratched or marked in any way. There was some oxidation in the threads for the battery compartment, but the compartment itself was clean. I cleaned up the threads and have a new camera. Which I figure I need to be able to sell the other MX components either as a huge kit, or one by one, using the body as a demo. I won't tell you the price, but it was (in retrospect) so damn reasonable. So keep your eyes open. Working MXs sell all the time on eBay US for less than $100. Just over $100 for black bodies. Re: New gear, but now I have a decision to make...
Trust me Doug, Canon is not that quick anyway. Not hearing the lens makes some difference, and since so many have vouched for the speed I accept the Canon top bodies are fast. Not the 500n, at least mine, nor the Xti a friend is using and I borrow now and then, the moment they're using the non-usm lens. And those Canon have very small and darkish viewfinders when compared to my old Pentax stuff and to an *ist D I happened to try years ago. $ for $, feature for feature, Pentax is a hell of deal. Just don't go comparing the mid-range Pentax to the top-of-the-line Nikon, Canon or whatever. And don't forget every time we switch brands we sell something to buy something else. Going for a mid-price Canon is not that expensive - too bad mid-priced Pentaxes usually perform like cameras more expensive - and offer features you usually don't find in mid-priced cameras. I fancy MLU and DOF preview, and would like weather sealing. What would I pay for such camera in Pentax, Canon and Nikon systems?? Not that I can buy it now... OTOH, you must have access to some very interest racing cars... at least in the price. LF Doug Franklin escreveu: Bruce Dayton wrote: Many talk of jumping ship, but not too many actually do. What happens is you have to differentiate between a justifiable need and a want. I'd love, in some ways, to jump ship to Canon for their (reputedly) better high-speed-action performance. [Frankly I haven't done the research, I'm just using Canon as an example.] But I'd have to replace a 400/5.6 APO Macro, an F* 300/4.5, and an FA* 200/2.8, plus whatever the other brand has for analogues to the 16-45 or 16-50 and the 50-200. Plus bodies (two). That's more than I paid for the last race car we bought. It's more than any daily driver I've ever bought. It's more than all but one vehicle I've ever bought, and that's the truck to tow the race rig.
