Re: lens advice?
Subash, IMHO you might want to take 10-20 for landscapes (probably breathtaking shots will come out of this), 50/1.4 for the evening hours and the shots of your friends, and optionally 50-200... But I think that wide lens and a fast lens are preferable to the long lens. FA 35/2 seems to me like the least possible candidate as it does not offer neither wide angle nor speed compared to 10-20 and 50/1.4... Unless of course weight and size are restrictions. Then you might ought to run and buy yourself one of these wide limited DA lenses, such as DA 15 or DA 21. Have a great trip and be safe! RE: lens advice?
in the old days, 28-85mm could do an extremely wide range of shoots, this is roughly 18-54mm on Pentax digital, hence the 18-55 kit lenses. Don't know if the DA18-55 they sell is any good, but I would not recommend the huge gap in commonly needed normal range beteen 20mm to 50mm. Either use a zoom from 18-50 range or fill in/add a 28/30mm lens if you have one. those are generally small and light and good performance too. -- J.C. And the idiocy of creating a fixed lens hood that permanently blocks or makes clumsy the use of other lens accessories put it over the top. The only time I've ever had flare issues with mine, sticking a polarizer on it handled them nicely, and the cutaway hood does make it easy to turn polarizers. That's it, it's my opinion and I voted with my wallet: I sold the lens to someone who appreciated it more than I, took the money and bought other lenses that I found more suitable. Re: lens advice?
Subash, If it was me I'd be thinking like this: I wouldn't dare to leave the tripod at home. The 50mm focal length is duplicated by the long zoom, so the 50mm would be off my packing list. The 35mm is conveniently between the two zooms, and will also serve well in low-light. With particularly spectacular landscapes, it will also be a good choice for making mosaics (or panos, if you like) to up the resolution. Whether by leaving other stuff at home or by carrying the extra weight, I think suffering for the art is worthwhile within your limits. FWIW, Ballheads may not be necessary. I have used monopods for years without them, even after I tried them. You can usually just tilt the whole rig for minor adjustments in pitch or roll. But I think that wide lens and a fast lens are preferable to the long lens. FA 35/2 seems to me like the least possible candidate as it does not offer neither wide angle nor speed compared to 10-20 and 50/1.4... Unless of course weight and size are restrictions. Re: I've got a hole in me arsenal
I think the DA* 60-250 is a bit better at f4 and 135mm than is the DA* 50-135, but they're too different animals, and both are excellent. The 50-135 is superb and has the advantage of being a stop faster. It's more suited for low-light work like weddings or concerts. HP supported Win 98 until just a couple of years ago, they dropped Win2k within just a few months after that. All the software I'm going to need wants XP or better. I'm actually thinking of building/configuring two new machines, an XP machine with twice the speed and twice current memory of the one I'm currently using and a headless Linux box to act as a file server, (that can be a bit slower than what I'm using now and still have superior throughput). K20D Blues
Well not really blues, exactly. The K20 is, relatively, big, and heavy, and takes very nice photos; very, very, nice photos. However it's just sinking in how much I'm going to have to upgrade. Pentax Photo Lab does a reasonably good job of converting the raw output, but it's really clunky to use. RSE which is what I have been using is, of course, a dead product, since Adobe bought it, (just as I had decided to buy RSP, also a dead product), but it did everything I needed and it's work flow was actually good enough for me to use when shooting a wedding or other event. Well that's gone and now I need to look at different raw converters. Some of the photoshop plugins I've been using simply refuse to work with files produced by the K20D, I'll have to find replacements, even if I didn't have to update to a newer picture editing program, (I'm using Photoshop 7.0). That too produced very nice output with the *ist-D and Ds). The built in card reader in my Win2K box chokes on SDHC cards, not surprising really, but I keep forgetting, annoying, so I need a new one of those. I was already running out of Hard drive space, looks like another Terabyte is in order, probably two, (damn I remember when a Terabyte was *a* *boatload* of storage). Then there's my flash units, I've been using a pair of AF280Ts as my primary on camera lighting, and an AF200T as a just in case unit, since my primary cameras were a pair of LXen. Well of course TTL is dead, so I need to upgrade those. Yes I know, they still work as dumb flash units, (and as long as I have an LX or a *ist camera in my inventory I will probably keep them, after all what are they worth used), but the 280s have always been a little under powered, and what made them reasonably viable was the their TTL capability. RhetoricalThe question about the flash is do I go with something simple but powerful and robust such as Vivitar 285HV or a sophisticated unit like the Pentax AF-540./rhetorical Oh well, I don't /need/ to make that decision today. Thank Gaud that at least the lenses don't have to be changed, though I've been lusting over a 77 limited for some time now, and the 17-70 would be very convenient, and then there's that 15mm limited that everyone hates and either an A 20mm or Da 21mm, (ARRGGG). -- The free man owns himself. Dario I'm on my fourth Vista machine since launch (2 Laptops, 1 desktop, 1 subnotebook), 3 of which are still being used (although the Desktop is now my main Linux server). It's been FAR less hassle than XP ever was, especially with regards to drivers since it requires the new WDM drivers which are more stable. The issues with Vista's rep mostly come down to poor driver support at launch, the (mistaken) idea that you can actually successfully upgrade a consumer OS, a few badly chosen default settings on MS's part (UAC and ReadyBoost in particular) and people trying it on marginal hardware. In reality Vista has caused far less problems than XP did at launch. The main reason it's been unsuccessful was that it was a painful launch replacing a mature OS that most were content with whereas XP's launch was a painful launch replacing a disastrously bad OS (Windows Me, the hands-down worst version of Windows by a very large margin). -- M. It supports batch commands and saving specific settings to a file so you can hand-tweak settings for one representative raw file and then do that to all the others in that batch from the command line. (From the first image you wind up with up with _igp0020.dng, _igp0020.raw, and _igp0020.png from the first file; then use the batch commands to apply _igp0020.raw to _igp0021.dng through _igp0050.dng) Worked with the K20D even before it knew to crop off the unused sensor area. Doug, My browser window was not in full-screen mode which made my mail program truncate the subject of your post to I've got a hole in me arse, to which I thought hey, so do I, maybe we can have a nice thread chatting about it. But then I thought you might have just found out you had a hole back there, which worried me because I am not a psychologist, and you would surely be in need of specialised help if it had taken you this long to figure out where your 4th orifice was located. I must say I was relieved when I clicked on the message and found out the aforementioned hole was not in your arse, but in your arsenal, and that you where looking for suggestions on how to plug it. The hole in your arsenal, that is. I would not recommend you plug the other one. Unless you had a severe case of the runnies and a date with Carmen Electra in 10 minutes. I guess there's an exception to every rule. So anyway, back to your holy arsenal. I think Jostein gave you your answer: Are you a small ape photographing people, or a person photographing small apes? Re: K20D Blues
The biggest problem I have is using PTLens, (though there are a couple of other plugins that don't much like the K20D files, too big maybe), I have one of the ancient Freeware copies as a Photoshop plug in, It's no longer supported but if you've got even a small clue as to what you're doing you can create your own profiles. I've created a lens profile for converting my 17mm fisheye shots to rectilinear which works very well and is relatively automatic, and a couple of others to correct for distortion that isn't quite that radical. (I also had to create a profile for the Ds which worked just fine, it's only looking for two parameters in the EXIF data). Unfortunately my version of PTLens chokes on the K20 Files. The profile I created for that camera looks right, but...) I've used irfanview to convert *ist raw files but I was never really happy with the results, and I couldn't figure out how to create as nearly a seamless workflow as I had with RSE which is quite flexible, and can produce very consistent results in batch mode. Photoshop 7.0 itself doesn't have problems reading the converted files from Pentax Photo Lab, Raw Therapee, or Irfanview but none of them are conducive to any kind of professional work flow.. None of the convertersm that I know offer reasonable work flow will even install on Win2k, at this point in time, (thought they might run). I suppose that I wouldn't have to replace Photoshop 7.0 if I could find a new Raw Converter that worked the way I want, but that seems to be Lightroom. so why not just go all the way and get a updated Photoshop, it doesn't have to be the full version Elements would be fine. I've resisted most of these upgrades because they would have required that I ditch Win2K, which I've been happier with than any other OS I've ever used. I've been able to get all of the software I needed to do photography to work relatively painlessly, together. I don't write software that needs the latest driver models and my software runs quite well on WinXp and even Vista even if developed on Win2K. It's not really a complaint, but it is a pain, (and damn it if I don't despise Vista). Doug Brewer wrote: I ran PS 7.0 on my work box and had no trouble with K20 files that I recall. Re: The k20D is here!
Like I said, bleeding edge, I run closed machines usually behind a firewall that keeps everything out with up to date virus software. Most non Trojan attacks are through RPC type services, I turn those off and block all the ports but those that I actually need using firewall. I won't say I'm particularly safe, but Microsoft's support update model actually makes me more vulnerable. The only way my machines are particularly subject to attack would be if someone got physical access to them, (I think I'll be even more paranoid running XP and shut down even more services), anyone who can physically get to a machine can do pretty much anything they want however, I believe in firearms to deter that. Re: I've got a hole in me arsenal
Have to know what you plan to shoot, don't we? Any lenses you can get rid of if you get the 60-250? Do you need the 250mm end? The 60-250 seems (to me) to be a better, sharper lens than the 50-135. But it's heavier, bigger, costs a lot. BUT, are the prices going to rise as they have in Europe? I bought mine now because of that, instead of ordering the K-7 last weekend. I already have 2 K20s, and a K10 (and a K100), and I'm selling all of those except one K20 to pay for my 60-250, and get a start on the K-7 body. Your situation will vary. Just some thoughts to help you along. Is the 60-250 really that much better, and keep in mind that linear thought and I rarely collide. For the difference, I could also get the 21Ltd and a grip for the K-7. What to do, what to do? Well, it might be a bit specialized for some people, but not for me. I think I've mentioned before that it seems to me that most of the vocal folks on this list spend most of their photographic lives on the wide angle end of the focal length spectrum, while I spend most of mine on the telephoto end. For me, the 60-250 would be perfect probably 80% of the time. With the 50-135 I'd often be looking for more reach. Hell, even the 60-250 doesn't have as much reach as I'd like, so the 300 and 400 fixed lenses wouldn't be going anywhere if I added the 60-250. Colors on the K20
When I got home from my roadtrip this weekend, I wrestled my pictures onto my iMac and had a few minutes before I passed out from exhaustion to look at a few of them. On several of them, I noticed that the colors seemed unnaturally vivid. A few almost look like the faux HDR shots that I've seen. I haven't shot a lot with this camera, almost half the shots that I've taken with it have been in the past week, so I'm not very used to what it produces. It is also very possible that I inadvertantly tweaked some default setting in Lightroom. I think that I've downloaded, but have not yet upgraded to 2.4, so lightroom should still be at 2.3. -- The first step is learning to take great photos, the second step is learning to throw away ones that are merely good. with a monopod you still using your feet, the camera is in front of your feet, either the ground is level, higher or lower, in front of your feet, but that is just a simple height adjustment of the monopod leg.
