RE: My current prime lens A-Team

2009-07-26 Thread J.C. O'Connell
Ive never tried the smcA 135/f1.8 lens, but I have used
the smcK/f2.5 and the smcK/f2.5 is a fantastic
lens, fairly fast, and only costs around $250 near mint,
which is a small fraction of the cost of the F1.8
lens.

That's not quite true, they do occasionally become available but for big
money, far more than the photographic value IMO. It's a lovely looking
piece of glass but has attained its legendary status more due to its
obscurity than its performance in my opinion. I sold mine quite a few
years back and never regretted the sale, it's not so hot until stopped
down a bit, lots of CA and low contrast, it does look impressive though.

well, a quick stopgap would be a 24mm lens

then the 20 and 28 should do the trick.

DA14
DA40
FA10 1.4
A50 2.8 macro
FA 100 2.8 macro
FA125 2.8
K 300 4

I desperately need some prime lenses between 14 an 40. The 40 is bit
too long in many cases and need a shorter normal. I often use the
FA20-35 but I would like to get the DA21 and something in the low to mid
30's. one good results was that the FA 135 suddenly became a most
useful lens with the DX format.

well, there are exceptions to every rule I guess,
but in general the further you get away from
50mm ( 33mm on digital ), the less often you are
going to need it. That's why they call normal normal.

of a 135,200, or 300, than the 400. 400mm is just very very long on

Unless you do birds, in which case 400mm is awfully short.

PDML came back on line for me at about the same time as Ann has
said it came on for her, and we went out at approximately the same
time as well. Coincidence? We don't use the same ISP. Very
strange. Of course I badgered comcast relentlessly, and they
admitted that PDML was blocked. For a while they couldn't seem to
fix it. More strangeness. But I'm pleased to be back.

My excellent 135/2.5 went for $201 on ebay a couple weeks ago. Great

piece of glass but has attained its legendary status more due to its
obscurity than its performance in my opinion. I sold mine quite a few
years back and never regretted the sale, it's not so hot until stopped
down a bit, lots of CA and low contrast, it does look impressive

Re: My current prime lens A-Team

2009-07-26 Thread paul stenquist
I've sold quite a few of my primes, but have kept these -- and still
use them quite a bit:

A 400/5.6
Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5 macro
SMC Pentax 85/1.8
FA 50/1.4
FA 35/2

On the wide end where the zooms are almost as fast and just as capable
as the primes, I don't really need primes. I'd love to have the DA*
200/2.5 and 300/4, but they're not in the budget right now. Oh... I
could use an FA 600/4 too:-).

I have a number of M42 primes as well, but they're relegated to the
display case.

Maybe not much. PDML seems to have taken a break from sometime Friday

I subscribe through the digests, and there were none in my inbox
during that period.

John--- I note that you, too are on ROADRUNNER...
I tested the list by sending something to it, so when what I mailed

while one doesn't expect to see much mail on a summer weekend
on this list there are a lot more posts anyway - but having communicated
extensively with Paul and Doug on facebook, we did know that others were
getting the list

and it appeared not to me anything with the list's server.

Timestamps look like it came back on after 9:00 pm EDT Saturday.

20:49 was the first one I saw...

GESO - Smudge

2009-07-26 Thread Derby Chang

Smudge were at the centre of a fine circle of indie bands in the 90s.
Funny, unpretentious and a guarantee good night each time they played.
They've reformed again, and its like I'm yanked back in time 15 years.
Tom, Adam, and Alison, especially Alison, seem to be ageless.

Used the DA*55 for the first time at a gig. I think I like this SDM
contraption. It certainly hunted less than the 77mm (which I use mostly
in MF anyway).

Just curious, Sasha: do you mean make a closer crop, or reduce the

focussed as close as the DA*55 would allow. This is a Hosta plant with
bright yellow-green leaves. I had already increased the contrast so as
to lighten and add depth to the fg and drastically reduce the bg
luminosity. I agree that the bg is still pretty saturated, partly from
the contrast boost (two Ps layers using Overlay) but also partly from
being underexposed down there (not much flash hit it).

Bruce,
I like the shot as it is.
I do not think that tweaking it PP will make it significantly better.
To me - the flower begs for high key.
I Imagined it - colors less dark, white background, petals' edges fading...

Or background could be light green - if you can re-shoot it you can
try using a semi-transparent cloth or paper as a screen, so it would
be white with light green cast.
That's more or less what I meant.

Thanks for a nice photo,

High key's a great idea. Assuming the Hostas keep flowering 'round the
yard I may just try that. (It's been raining every day for the last

OT: my K7 seems to be dead :(
after shooting this set it just did not turn on.
Actually when I turn it on it thinks for few seconds then shows a
battery indicator on led display.
LCD is dead black, nothing battery indicator on lcd.
Pressing keys does nothing.
Amazingly AF sort of works: when I press shutter button it hunts.
I tried with freshly charged battery, with or without grip.
It seems i well have to revert to K20 for some time now.

Good set, Sasha. Loved the guy in the Lexus, and in-the-restaurant

I assume you've pulled the battery from the K-7. You might try letting
it sit for a day with the battery out. That might reset the electronics.

Good luck with it!

Ted,

Those are really nice photos from your photo walk.

I have a criticism of the page, though: The posted photos (bigger than
thumbnails) are rather small; but clicking on them produces photos that are too
big to fit on my 1900 x 1200 pixel 24 in monitor--i.e. way too big. How about
larger photos on the page and smaller photos upon clicking?

Still is, despite the general lack of 9600 bps modem links anywhere at

That's not quite true, they do occasionally become available but for
big money, far more than the photographic value IMO. It's a lovely
looking piece of glass but has attained its legendary status more due
to its obscurity than its performance in my opinion. I sold mine quite
a few years back and never regretted the sale, it's not so hot until
stopped down a bit, lots of CA and low contrast, it does look
 impressive though.

That's a pity.

Pentax seems to have decided that there's no reason to go faster than
ƒ2.8 on digital. The only exception I can think of is the DA* 55/ƒ1.4,
and it's got a sort of vast penumbra of expectation attached if it's to
serve as the APS-C 85/1.4. (Oh, wait, DA 70/2.4 Ltd.)

I'd like to see some much faster medium -- 100 to 150 mm -- teles; at
the 77mm filter size, they ought to be able to do a 100/1.4, a 135/1.8
(just squeaking, but that's the size listed for the A* 138/1.8), or a
150/2; a DA* 150/2 Macro would be especially welcome.

And, yes, perhaps I should stop trying to take pictures of wretchedly
crepuscular songbirds. Or inside zoo buildings on cloudy days. Or
under forest canopies. Or at the other end of long rooms inside. Or
of specific members of the orchestra after the house lights have dimmed.

But, well, I've been known to try all of those, and a sharp-wide-open
fast medium tele -- what I suspect Pentax thinks of as a long tele --
would be really useful.

PESO: Podium Posers

2009-07-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
The Birmingham, Michigan street fair is populated largely by upscale
women's clothing and accessory stores. This year one of the spa-type
hair and beauty joints got in on the act with mannequins on podiums
up and down the streets. I like the look of the young lady in the
first shot, but the composition is nothing special. The second shot
was a bit of an exercise in what could be if I could have staged this.
Think a line of three podiums and models on an empty street. Then
shoot it off a tripod at about f16 or so. Anyway, it was fun, and the
ladies were very nice. (The second shot also came after about six or
seven hours on the odium, and the young lady had long since taken her
shoes off.) All size 4 six footers BTW. That's the spec for even entry
level work. Sadly, these girls would be considered too fluffy in New
York.

All with the K7 and the DA* 60-250 at f5.6. The first is at 200mm, the
second is at 118mm. Flash fill on both. The shorter focal length on
the second was an attempt to get a bit more flash fill.

And, yes, perhaps I should stop trying to take pictures of wretchedly
crepuscular songbirds.  Or inside zoo buildings on cloudy days.  Or
under forest canopies.  Or at the other end of long rooms inside.  Or
of specific members of the orchestra after the house lights have dimmed.

But, well, I've been known to try all of those, and a sharp-wide-open
fast medium tele -- what I suspect Pentax thinks of as a long tele --
 would be really useful.

 -- Graydon

Is AF a requirement? If not I can think of 7 different
current-production lenses that fit your requirements. of course none
are Pentax's. All are KA mount.

They are:

Cosina/Voigtlander:
Ultron 40mm f2 Aspherical Pancake
Nokton 58mm f1.4

Zeiss ZK:

Distagon 28mm f2
Distagon 35mm f2
Makro-Planar 50mm f2
Planar 50mm f1.4
Planar 85mm f1.4
Makro-Planar 100mm f2

Samyang:
85mm f1.4 Aspherical (also sold under a variety of other names such as
Vivitar and Phoenix)

The Zeiss 35mm f2 and 100mm f2 are arguably the finest lenses ever
sold at those focal length/aperture combinations.

I think Pentax has just decided that *most* people would prefer glass

This does fit with the shake-reduction-is-a-tripod-replacement marketing

If you want a fast 180-200, the Summicron-R 180/2 is one of the best
out there and can be converted to K mount via a Leitax adapter (as can
the Contax 180/2, but it isn't nearly as good). There are only a few
180-200 f2 or faster lenses out there and none were natively K mount.
The best option for a fast K mount lens in the 180-200 range is the
Tamron SP 180/2.5 or Angeniuex 180/2.3.

worldwide photo walk ...

2009-07-26 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Two weekends ago, I participated in Scott Kelby's Second-Annual
Worldwide Photo Walk, joining a group exploring the historic town of
Niles in nearby Fremont, California. Niles is famous for being the
home of Essanay Studios, a movie production company in the silent film
era where such movies as Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp was filmed.

There is a great town there, a Silent Movie Museum, and a Southern
Pacific Railroad yard. It was a fine day and well worth the effort. I
need to go back and do a project on the Museum .. it's a fascinating
place.

I posted a few of my photos from the walk last evening. Thought you
might like to see some other folks' photos too ... they're towards the
bottom of this page:

enjoy!

RE: My current prime lens A-Team

2009-07-26 Thread Bob W

Oddly enough, it doesn't look like anyone makes a really
 sharp 200/2 in
   KA mount.

If you want a fast 180-200, the Summicron-R 180/2 is one of the best
  out there

At ~ 4 kCAD, one would hope! :)

and can be converted to K mount via a Leitax adapter (as can
the Contax 180/2, but it isn't nearly as good). There are only a few
180-200 f2 or faster lenses out there and none were
 natively K mount.
The best option for a fast K mount lens in the 180-200 range is the
Tamron SP 180/2.5 or Angeniuex 180/2.3.

 Thank you!

One of the truly good things about the PDML is finding out
 about useful
things one had no idea existed.

 -- Graydon

Zeiss makes (or made until recently) a 200/2 in Contax MM mount. It could
probably have been fitted to a Pentax body with appropriate adapters.
Although if you were paying that much money for a lens it would probably
make more sense just to buy a Contax body to put it on.

*ist DS arrived home

2009-07-26 Thread Luiz Felipe
Well, after a long battle my DS arrived home. Alive and kicking, quickly
demolished a set of ancient NiMH from Rayovac or something like that...
currently working on a set of Philips NiMH 2300 mAH, and accepting
gladly kingston 2GB SD cards. But that's after the firmware upgrade to 2.02.

Works fine indeed. Still trying it out, but so far I'm very happy with
it, low res by today stds and all. Next step? Depending on money issues,
a second camera - maybe a Demo K7 at the right moment... assuming I
manage to go in person or find a proper courier, the a$$%*le that
brought me the DS managed to cost me not only the dreaded import tax,
but also a fine because said carrier decided to lie about the goods on
her bag. At least she didn't try to bribe the officers...

After some experience with a Xti and its kit lens, the DA 18~55 looks
like a dream. Not only because of its nonrotating front element (Cokin
set in the bag again!!), but because it's going wider than 24mm before
any vignetting is noticeable in the viewfinder of a borrowed ZX5, wide
open. Trying to preview DOF and realistic vignetting with my current
crop of 35mm is futile, since the lens closes all the way down.

There is hope, since I seldom close my wide lenses past 11 - more often
they're not closing past 8.0... Did some crude tests today, and will
return to this matter shortly, as soon as the film is developed and
scanned. Bottom line, I may get to use it with film at least past 28mm,
probably close to 24mm, possibly wider if I kick the panorama mask in.
Useful. Too bad I can't control the aperture in the Mx/ Lx. That would
be super... Possibly there is a cheap ZX body in my future.

Mixed results with flash, so far. I should stop being cheap and getting
a proper unit, but I'm very fond of my 280t's and vivitar 285... and
those taxes and fines almost doubled the price of the camera. High price
we pay here in Brasil.

Still getting to know the camera better, despite the constantly read
eletronic manual - the 2.02 firmware makes some subtil changes. All
things considered, I'd call it a good move. Next, some pics... soon.

From: ann sanfedele
I subscribe through the digests, and there were none in my inbox
 during that period.

John--- I note that you, too are on ROADRUNNER...
I tested the list by sending something to it, so when what I mailed
didnt show up...welll..

while one doesn't expect to see much mail on a summer weekend
on this list there are a lot more posts anyway - but having communicated
extensively with Paul and Doug on facebook, we did know that others were
getting the list

and it appeared not to me anything with the list's server.

I think it was something to do with the feed into roadrunner.

I'm not sure I completely understand how it all works, but I gather
there are a few super-servers or gateways or such like that serve as
clearinghouses between ISPs and such.

I think one of these super-servers feeding roadrunner must have been
messed up, but not all of them because I was getting other mail from
other sources on my roadrunner account during the outage.

Everybody needs a day off now and then.

I sure don't read everything but when I had just specifically asked for
feedback , I didn't want anyone to think I was ignoring their responses

I read all my mail with special settings - can't cope with the archives.

Are the archives the same as the digests. I tried the straight PDML and
just couldn't keep up with all the emails. The digests appear to gather
all the posts together into digestable clumps and don't seem to lag too
far behind.

At least they don't lag as far behind as I do some times.

As to your new website, I pretty much like the design but there was one
thing that bothered me a little ... when I was browsing through some
galleries, I'd click the next arrow to go the next image; instead of
going to the next image, there'd be a delay while it popped open a
thumbnail of the image in a new window.

After a few seconds it would close the thumbnail window and go on to the
next image.

It seemed like it was opening the thumbnail window when the mouse
pointer lingered over the arrow for a fraction of a second before I
clicked. With a little practice I could dart in and click the arrow
without triggering the thumbnail window.

I sort of followed some of the other comments and that might be what
others were commenting on.

the tamron adaptall2 spif 200mm f2.5 is a steal sleeper.
You can get one for around $400 in nice shape
and it's a phenomenally good performer. Definitely
better than the Pentax SMCK 200/2.5 which had
more CA. You can get a KA mount for it, so the
only thing lacking is AF for some people.
