RE: OOPS!!

2009-12-03 Thread John Coyle
I can't relate a story about falling, but how about sitting in a loo in
Xi'an, China, camera bag neatly slung from the hook on the back of the door
to prevent it's being dragged out under the door and walked away with: watch
in horror as hook breaks in half, sending bag with MZ-S, FA28-105, Sigma
18-35, AF330FTZ flash, etc, down on to concrete floor? Lens hood and filter
ring on the Sigma bent, FA 28-105 internal zoom collar bent out of shape,
nice scuff mark on corner of MZ-S. Fortunately my travel insurance paid for
the repairs, but I'll never trust cheap Chinese hardware again!

But I'm glad you're OK...

Sad moment.. I was unloading gear after returning home from a short photo
trip. Was carrying the mother bag, a satellite bag containing the K20, DA

easier to spell.
As I approached the door into the house, I caught my toe on the edge of a
throw rug. Thought I was going down so, per survival instinct, I emptied my
hands to help catch myself when I contacted the cement floor.
All but the mother bag on my shoulder went to the floor in sort of a
forward throw. Later, when I turned the camera on, all I had on the display
was a flashing F.. Lens was difficult to remove and was obviously not mating
with contacts. Upon removing the lens, with some effort, I could see a
slight bend in the lens mount on the body.
I put the lens on a K10 and found it mounted OK, but would not focus on
the S setting and shutter would not release. In C mode. while the focus
indicator light indicated in focus at the narrow end, the images were soft
beyond help. Element scramble maybe.(?)
Both K20 body and lens are on their way to the new Pentax repair facility
at 250 North 54th st, Chandler, AZ 85226.

I'm not sure about this one. I like the cobblestones and the stone

 Or maybe that's good.

I see what you mean Rick, but I think the way the cobbles and the stone
walls come together works well. I did wonder whether a bit of cropping of
the foreground cobbles might help tidy it up a bit, but they're interesting
in their own right so that might remove something.

The perspective of the series of round arches through the pointed one is
particularly strong. Overall an excellent shot.

Why antibiotics? Bursitis is normally caused by something other than
infection. You could try Voltarol cream - it's a non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory. AKA magic cream. The tablets are even better but have

Re: PESO - Sunrise, St. Andrew's Bay

2009-12-03 Thread AlunFoto
Glad you like the series, folks. I plan to post, on average, one pic
per day of landings. Some days had several memorable landings, so
there's stuff that won't be covered. Some landings did not produce any
outstanding, either.

Jack, regarding this image, I _muted_ the colours rather than
inflating them. The K-7 expose to put the weight of the histogram as
far to the right as it can. In situations where the contrast is lower
than the CMOS sensor's latitude, it means the colours look a bit
washed-out even though they're actually quite saturated. When reducing
exposure and/or increasing contrast, it also becomes necessary to
tweak saturation. Usually down. :-)

Quite unfamiliar situation for me, a sucker as I am for strong
colours. But the K-7 is one very cleverly thought-out camera, I think.
To me it's Pentax best camera since 645ii.

Y'know, if someone were to scoop up *all* these old Zip drives and

A scene that must play over and over in your memory. Sorry to say, but sounds
like your equipment may have sustained more damage than mine.
I checked the tracking number yesterday and saw that both the lens and body had
been received. Should be contacted with repair estimates soon. That's when I'll
find out just how bad ($$$) the damage.
According to web info, repair service takes 'prox 15-20 days.
Thanks for empathy, John. :)

 I can't relate a story about falling,
but how about sitting in a loo in
Xi'an, China, camera bag neatly slung from the hook on the
 back of the door
to prevent it's being dragged out under the door and walked
 away with: watch
in horror as hook breaks in half, sending bag with MZ-S,
 FA28-105, Sigma
18-35, AF330FTZ flash, etc, down on to concrete
 floor?  Lens hood and filter
ring on the Sigma bent, FA 28-105 internal zoom collar bent
 out of shape,
nice scuff mark on corner of MZ-S.  Fortunately my
 travel insurance paid for
the repairs, but I'll never trust cheap Chinese hardware
 again!

 But I'm glad you're OK...

The last three weeks have been maybe the most miserable of my 67
years, I had a suspected heart attack the 13th and after two days in
the hospital it was discovered that I had severe blockage in three
arteries at the heart. By-Pass was performed and the mending process
begun. I was sent home on the 23rd only to have to return two days
later with a bladder infection. Another two days stay and return home
only to return to the hospital with severe fluid retention. Finally
home and feeling much better two days ago. Still have to sort out the
bladder/prostrate problem with the urologist but I am feeling much
better.
Growing old is not for the faint of heart!!! So far the good thing is
that I have lost 20 pounds and hope to lose another 30 before it is
over!

Cheers to all.

If it is infected, it is septic arthritis, not bursitis. It would be hot, red,
and tender. The usual approach on this side of the pond is to draw some of the
fluid out of the joint to see if it is full of white blood cells, and culture
it to see what bacteria grow; then prescribe antibiotics accordingly.

Bursitis is tennis elbow--not as painful, not hot and red, sometimes a bit
tender, and not responsive to antibiotics.

receipt for this and can include it. Ultimately, I improved the
focusing performance (a back focusing issue) by adjusting the focus

correctly on my K200D body (no adjustments to the camera body needed).

That depends. As with dogs, purebreeds have shorter lifespans.
A typical lifespan for an otherwise healthy mixed breed would be
12-15 years, but there is considerable variation even there.
I've had a couple of cats that didn't make it to eight (although

It's not that out of line for an indoor-only moggy. Pure bred animals
tend not to live as long, and being and outdoor kitty definitely reduces
average life span, for city kitties, anyway. I've had one live to
nearly 20, another to 17 and a bit, and I've got two 12-year-olds in the

Yeah, I kinda wish the menu weren't there, too.

But as you know better than anyone, Frank, you gotta shoot 'em as you find 'em!

Nice shot, but I wish that darned brown thing (is it a menu

Still, the photo gets the point across.  Well done.

For some reason, I have it in my head that the average lifespan for pet
cats is a couple of years longer than for pet dogs.

That's because they are smaller. Seriously (albeit slightly tongue-in-
cheek; different species are not directly comparable). But large dog
breeds have, generally speaking, shorter lifespans than smaller breeds.

Doesn't look a lot like California's central valley. ;) Perhaps a few million
years ago. I do like the seal's perch.
Raw, wet, scratchy, ugly day.(?)

More a documentary type of shot today. Weather was drab,
 with wet
snow, not much suited for documenting the landscape. It's
 odd to think
of this as once being an outpost of what passed for
 civilisation...

 When my fathers purebreed English
Cocker was 12 years old one of the
Vets would remark at his annual checkup, He probably won't
 be around
much longer.  He said this for three years, then left
 the partnership
for a job in research.  The Dog lived another four
 years.  At 19 he was
 a very old dog...

That depends.  As with dogs, purebreeds have
 shorter lifespans.
A typical lifespan for an otherwise healthy mixed
 breed would be
12-15 years, but there is considerable variation even
 there.
I've had a couple of cats that didn't make it to eight
 (although
each of those had other medical problems), and three
 that made
it past twenty (one managing to attain the age of
 twenty-five!).
  Currently my oldest is 15, but she's failing - I don't
 know that
she'll make it another year.  There again, I said
 the same thing
twelve months ago; time will tell.

When I was married we had a Devon Rex who passed on due to congestive
heart failure at about 12. Vet said that was quite normal for a
purebred.

I currently (she's still at my ex', but I hope to have her back in a
month or two - long story) have a mixed breed cat who's 20 (or
possibly even 21 - when I got her in '96 her previous owner said she
was 6 or 7, I can't remember which. She's in remarkably good shape
for her years. Alert, still jumps relatively well, runs about every
so often, even plays once in a while (when she feels like it every few
days or so). Might have a bit of arthritis in her rear hips and her
kidney and liver counts are high (but not shockingly so according to
the vet), but for her age she's doing great.

Longest relationship I've had with a female (who isn't a blood relative)...

cheers,
frank

A fascinating landscape despite the weather. The seal doesn't show a lot of
detail, but as part of the view, it works just fine.
