RE: The perfect bag?
[...] last august, when i went trekking in the himalayas, i had a lowepro slingshot 200 which i thought was very convenient. since i had a heavy backpack, i could swing the lowpro to the front. that was the first time i was doing serious trekking, had taken the k10d and about four lenses. but it was much too heavy and in future i would definitely look at making the gear much lighter and the bag much smaller (for my cycle ride in the himalays this july i am just taking the tamron 18-250). perhaps you can look at the slingshot 100? Subash, thanks. I don't like the idea of the slingshots for that sort of hike - it seems to me that there must be too much weight on one side of the body, rather than having it distributed evenly, with the hips taking some of the load. I can see the benefits of the sling design for some applications, but I can't imagine it would work for long hikes with a realistic weight. Re: The PDML Annual has Landed
Mine is here as well. There are truly a number of whoa... and Dude... images in this book. It's a good mix of images I've seen on the list and ones I haven't. I see some image and glance at the name to confirm what I already knew (Frank, Rick Wormer, Ann). Others are fantastic images from folks I don't know. Still others are works from list friends who've surprised me with their submissions. Last year I got the dust jacket version. This year it's the image wrap. I like this better though the cover does have a curious chalky sort of feel. I'll try to pick out some favorites during the day and report back. On a bummer note, there is a problem with something bleeding into the images on a couple of the pages. I've sent Blurb a request for a replacement and will report how they do. The design is outstanding, and the reproduction quality is exceptional. The collector of quotes has obviously mastered the Blurb format. Excellent work. Thanks Paul! I can't think of a good non-technical reason why the aperture should remain the same size during exposure. It should be possible in this computerised day and age to set the camera so that the aperture starts at say f/2.8 and stops at say f/11 during the exposure, not necessarily changing at a linear rate. Of course, the computer would have to calculate the exposure time accordingly, but it could have an interesting effect on the areas outside the critical plane of focus. Very cool ideal. Whether the investment required to develop it is worth it is a different matter, of course. You could try it on a night shot with a manual lens, but that might jiggle things around too much. Far better than last year's excellent volume. Kudos to all the photographers, and all who helped put the book together. Doug has written another excellent intro. And Mark. Wow! What can I say? The design is outstanding, and the reproduction quality is exceptional. The collector of quotes has obviously mastered the Blurb format. Excellent work. No virus found in this incoming message. I think I should very much like a capsule theology of the offshoot of Christianity that viewed the Holy Spirit as an egret.
