Bob - I had my Fastpack 200 with me when we met last Sunday - don't know
whether you noticed it. It's the smaller one that Larry mentions - not
really big enough as a daypack, but the principle is good. I can get camera
and a couple of lenses in the base and a thin waterproof and some sandwiches

don't know about the 350.

[...]

last august, when i went trekking in the himalayas, i had a
lowepro slingshot 200 which i thought was very convenient.
since i had a heavy backpack, i could swing the lowpro to the
front. that was the first time i was doing serious trekking,
had taken the k10d and about four lenses. but it was much too
heavy and in future i would definitely look at making the
gear much lighter and the bag much smaller (for my cycle ride
in the himalays this july i am just taking the tamron
18-250). perhaps you can look at the slingshot 100?

Subash, thanks. I don't like the idea of the slingshots for that sort of
hike - it seems to me that there must be too much weight on one side of the
body, rather than having it distributed evenly, with the hips taking some of
the load. I can see the benefits of the sling design for some applications,
but I can't imagine it would work for long hikes with a realistic weight.

The PDML Annual has Landed

2010-04-24 Thread P N Stenquist
The PDML annual was left on my doorstop this morning. I've just made
my way through it once.

It's truly superb. Far better than last year's excellent volume. Kudos
to all the photographers, and all who helped put the book together.
Doug has written another excellent intro. And Mark. Wow! What can I
say? The design is outstanding, and the reproduction quality is
exceptional. The collector of quotes has obviously mastered the Blurb
format. Excellent work.

Re: The PDML Annual has Landed

2010-04-24 Thread Cory Waters
Mine is here as well. There are truly a number of whoa... and
Dude... images in this book.
It's a good mix of images I've seen on the list and ones I haven't. I
see some image and glance at the name to confirm what I already knew
(Frank, Rick Wormer, Ann). Others are fantastic images from folks I
don't know. Still others are works from list friends who've surprised
me with their submissions.

Last year I got the dust jacket version. This year it's the image wrap.
I like this better though the cover does have a curious chalky sort of
feel.

I'll try to pick out some favorites during the day and report back.

On a bummer note, there is a problem with something bleeding into the
images on a couple of the pages. I've sent Blurb a request for a
replacement and will report how they do.

For Facebook users, it would be good if you could post some comments
about the book, including favorite photos, on the book's Facebook
page. We're getting more non-PDML people all the time, many of them
finding us through the CureSearch page, so they will have much less
(to put it mildly!) familiarity with our oeuvre than PDML members or
even other photographers in general.

Offline gathering

Just a quick hello from Stig Vidar, Tim Ø. and myself. We're on a
Pentax gathering out on an island off the West coast, and have a very
fragile connection to the mainland cellphone network to surf by.

We're having a great time, and through a Fovi representative we have
the entire lens lineup available for playing around with. Expect a
couple of PESOs in the days to come when we get back to more connected
parts.

Cheers,

Thanks Jack. I do use my 400 and my 85/1.8 from time to time, so I'm not
totally out of touch with manual focus. While the K7 is the easiest to focus

Mine is here as well.  There are
truly a number of whoa... and Dude... images in this
 book.
It's a good mix of images I've seen on the list and ones I
haven't.  I see some image and glance at the name to
confirm what I already knew (Frank, Rick Wormer, Ann).
Others are fantastic images from folks I don't know.
Still others are works from list friends who've surprised me
 with their submissions.

Last year I got the dust jacket version.  This year
it's the image wrap.  I like this better though the
cover does have a curious chalky sort of feel.

I'll try to pick out some favorites during the day and
 report back.

On a bummer note, there is a problem with something
bleeding into the images on a couple of the pages.
I've sent Blurb a request for a replacement and will report
 how they do.
