It's something that I've been thinking of myself. I've experimented with IR and
using IR filters over my flash so I can use a flash in a dark room and not
blind the dancers. At SFLX I met someone who was shooting with a Fuji IS-1. I
just got an email back from him last night

http://www.fujifilmusa.com/products/digital_cameras/is/finepix_is1/index.html
Here are a few of the shots he did with it outside.

There are some in this years mix as well.
Nothing too exciting from this event, but a few amusing shots.
http://rabscuttle.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=20100919sflx

I've got a lumix FZ20 that has been converted, but I think he just added a
filter, rather than taking the old IR blocking filter off, because using the
sunny 16 rule it seems to be about ISO 8.

Shots that I got with it are posted here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157606110993706/

Using IR flash and overpowering the weak IR filter on my K100 gave me these
shots:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157603983302091/

The Fuji isn't much more expensive than having a conversion done, and doing it
with a point and shoot has the advantage that it will focus with the light that
is hitting the sensor. If you focus optically with visible light, you then have
to correct for the proper IR focus point.

One interesting feature of IR, is that portraits taken in IR tend not to show a
lot of the skin blemishes that people have, so some women really like the
effect.

 thanks,
 Paul

 Hi Bruce.

I have shipped back all the domestic (US) photographs-the last bunch of them
yesterday afternoon. I will be doing the internationals this weekend.

I am trying to keep the cost of the ship back down to all the photographers,
so this means that they are going by USPS and I have to do them in drips and
drabs. The packaged size allows me only to be able to take over 11 at a

Sorry, that this is taking awhile.

There are two ways to do it. 1. Buy a converted camera from them
that they have already done. 2. Send in your camera to have
converted.

I know that there is at least one place that converts Pentaxes. There
is a guy on PF that had one converted and there used to be a guy that
would do it for a couple hundred (haven't seen him around lately).

This is an old thread, but the links still work:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/3344-pentax-ir-conversion.html#post439667

And the place linked: http://spencerscamera.com/default.aspx

I looked it to converting mine a while back, and the places i

I just used a tripod and bought a Hoya R72 filter. It did a really
good job. A photo i took at GFM in 2006 earned me a 2nd place in one
 of the catagories.

our usual office sustained a lot of water damage after the earthquake
activated the sprinkler system. The boss has been trying to get out of
the lease (for this and other reasons) but it looks like they'll have it
ready for use soon, possibly this coming week.

The temporary office space is working fairly well, except for the
distractions of having everyone together in the same room. The only major
annoyance is the IT situation; our main office server is still in its
temporary location and it's very slow to access files over the VPN
connection.

We are still getting aftershocks. The biggest ones are about magnitude
4.5 and we'd be getting maybe one or two of those a day with a handful of
smaller ones, mostly around 3.5. The scientists say that the aftershocks
are mostly generated at each end of the main fault, and one end is
uncomfortably close to the city. I don't know how accurate the location
data is, but when I put the coordinates into Google Maps it sometimes
shows the location directly under people's houses in the outer suburbs!
The shakes don't worry me so much now but the noise that precedes them
still gets the adrenalin running. The sound is hard to describe, it's a
bit like thunder.

We haven't heard anything from the insurers yet. They have tens of
thousands of claims to process and a broken chimney isn't going to be high
on the priority list so we're expecting to have to wait a while. There is
a silver lining though, due to the cost of repairing or replacing chimneys
we are likely to qualify for an energy efficient heat pump as a
replacement.

You may find the insurance situation for natural disasters to be
interesting. The first $100,000 (+tax) of damage to houses is covered by
the government-run Earthquake Commission (EQC), plus another $20,000 for
personal effects. That wouldn't even cover half the value of most houses,
so private insurance will cover any shortfall if the damage is bad enough.
I don't remember the current estimate of total damage across the city,
it's a few billion dollars which really isn't too bad when you consider
what it could have been.

I've taken tomorrow (Monday) off as it's my birthday. I also thought a
four day weekend would be nice :) We've had stunning weather over the
past few days, and I got to meet adventurer extraordinaire Steve Gurney at
an outdoors expo. I bought a copy of his autobiography because he said
he'd sign it. He's turned to coaching and motivational speaking now and
the bastard has got me thinking about goals again. I mean that in the
nicest possible way, I have tremendous respect for him and I do need a
kick in the pants from time to time.

Cheers,

Dave

G'day all

Igor Roshchin and his wife Jane have been in Sydney for the past week.
The weather has been pretty good so we were able to show them a bit of
the city and the nearby Blue Mountains.

Here's a small GESO. Anthony has already posted a few shots and I'm
sure Rob will post some as well:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1370864/PDML_Sydney_Sep2010/index.html

By the way, the Rolls Royce (Image 2) that we came across after a stop
for coffee has an interesting history. It's a Silver Wraith dating from
1958 and it was apparently owned by the Australian Government for
Vice-Regal and 'Royal' duties (according to this page:
http://www.darkforce.com/royce/sale.htm).

Cheers

Brian

Nestled between the town in which I work and the township in which we
live is the little Borough of Raritan, NJ, where the North Branch, the
South Branch and the Raritan Power Canal merge to form the Old Raritan
River.

It is distinguished today mostly as the home of Ortho Pharmaceuticals,
one of the divisions of Johnson and Johnson. It's main claim to fame,
however, still is as the home town of John Basilone, Marine hero of
World War II. This weekend was the annual Basilone weekend in
Raritan, with races on Saturday,aI concert by the Quantico Marine
Corps Band at the community college and fireworks on Saturday night,
and a big parade on Sunday. To give you an idea of the parade, there
were eight bagpipe and drum bands, not to mention the three high
school bands, two middle school band, the Qantico Band, several fife
and drum corps, and numerous military and veteran units (as well as a
large Rolling Thunder contingent). John Seda, who played Sgt Basilone
in The Pacific, was one of many honored guests riding in convertibles.
The parade lasted two hours before the long line of fire and rescue
truck streamed down Somerset Street.

Subject: PESO - The Quiet City

My partner was out of the house last night/this morning, so I took
advantage by getting up before the crack of dawn (now that dawn's
cracking at a more reasonable time), feeding the cats, then schlepping
(~before~ my first coffee, mind you!) the *istD, Tokina 80-200mm f2.8
and monopod down to the lake to try to get some photos of daybreak.

It was a mixed success. Clouds on the horizon obscured the actual
sunrise over the lake. Got lots of photos anyway, but none grabbed
me.

To the east of the actual sunrise was the skyline of Toronto, and
again, took loads of photos. I think this is the best of them:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/quiet-city.html

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

BTW, the title was blatantly ripped off from one of my favourite Aaron
Copland pieces which he wrote for an Irwin Shaw play (Quiet City)
which ended up never being published.  It's playing on the stereo now;
if you listen real close you may be able to hear it.

;-)

cheers,
frank
