RE: OT Albums to CD's

My wife bought me the ITUT400 model shown on that page - it worked a treat
and the included software made losing the hiss, crackle and pop childishly
simple.
I can now cheerfully listen to the last of my '78's to have survived moves
between four countries! Oh, and the software even tidied up one which had a
crack right across one side - a bit of sellotape to keep it reasonably
together was all that was needed.

You can guess the end of this story

Part of the problem is that I'm too much of a perfectionist, I think.
I took to chasing down every single pop and crackle and edit it out. I gave

You're taking the five bits off the top, not the five bits off the bottom.
But you've got a point there.

I think what you're trying to do, specifically, is reduce quantization
noise--the noise caused by rounding to the nearest bit--by allocating
your whole 12-bit dynamic range only to whatever the scene dynamic
range is, without loss. My thinking is that that, especially if you
expose to the right, quantization noise should be smaller than other
sources of noise, such as photon shot noise and amplifier read noise.
I don't, however, have figures for consumer sensors to back up this

That's pretty much my idea.

You're taking the five bits off the top, not the five bits off the bottom.
But you've got a point there.

OK, thinking about it a bit more, you're asking about additive light,
such as a veil of light scattered by fog. The original scene had some
modest dynamic range (e.g. 5 stops) but once you add the veil of
light, the light intensity seen by the camera has a much smaller
dynamic range when expressed in stops (e.g. log2(2080/2048) in your
example).

The issue with additive light is basically the same as Why can't I
see the stars in the daytime? There's a bright star in the sky that
you can see easily at night. In the daytime, you're still getting all
the photons from that star, but you can't see it because of the sky.
But why? The answer is not trivial, and it has to do with the physics
of light, rather than the way sensors or eyeballs work.

If you wanted to model additive light naively in Photoshop or Matlab,
you could add, say, 2000 counts to every pixel. Then, assuming you
didn't saturate any pixels, you could go back through, and subtract
2000 counts from every pixel, and recover the original scene. I think
this is what you propose the camera do for you, more or less.

The problem is that the add 2000 counts to every pixel model isn't
how the real world works. Light consists of discrete photons, which
obey photon statistics. If you have a source that emits, on average,
100 photons/sec, that doesn't mean that photons come evenly spaced in
time, 0.01 seconds apart, like cars on a train. Instead, during a
small interval of time, like a microsecond, you have a certain
probability of observing a photon. In the example of 100 photon/sec,
in one microsecond you have a p=100*1e-6 = 1e-4 probability of
observing a photon, and this is independent of what happened in the
previous microsecond, or how long it's been since the last photon. In
these short windows of time, photon arrival is a binomial process
(coin flip with a biased coin), which leads to
exponentially-distributed intervals between photon arrivals, and
Poisson-distributed counts over longer periods of time. For larger
photon counts, the Poisson distribution is well approximated by a
normal (Gaussian) distribution, with a standard deviation equal to the
square root of the mean. For example, in 1 second, you collect an
average of 100 photons, with a standard deviation of 10 photons. So
in a sequence of five 1-second exposures, or in five adjacent pixels
of an array, your recorded counts might be 107, 89, 101, 106, 91. (I
used an online RNG to create those example counts.) This variation is
usually called photon shot noise.

Now let's work an example with additive light. Since this is a
thought experiment and we want the math to be easy, we'll use a
Gedankendetektor 16, which has a 16-bit ADU, perfect quantum
efficiency, and unity electron gain. That is, every photon hitting a
pixel excites one electron, and every electron reads out as 1 ADU (A/D
unit, also called DN digital number or just count). All the way
from 1 photon = 1 e- = 1 ADU up to 65535 photons = 65535 e- = 65535
ADU. The Gedankendetektor 16 has a read noise of 5 e-/pixel = 5
ADU/pixel.

Now we observe a star. The light from the star falls on a single
pixel. The sky is perfectly dark--there is no additive (scattered)
light. During our exposure, say 1 minute, we record 100 photons = 100
ADU from the star. Our read noise is 5 ADU, so our signal-to-noise is
100/5 = 20. The star is well-detected and clearly visible.

Now we add scattered light--sky brightness. During the day, we have a
lot of scattered light from the sun, giving us a blue sky. During a
moonlit night, we have less scattered light than in the daytime.
During a moonless night, we have less than that, but still a some from
atomic and molecular transitions in the atmosphere and light
pollution.

During the same 1 minute exposure, we still get 100 ADU from the star,
but our sky brightness, which is added to that, averages 1,000
ADU/pixel. We can measure and subtract off the mean level of 1,000
ADU, but the photon shot noise, sqrt(1000) ADU/pixel = 32 ADU/pixel,
remains. Our signal to noise is now 100/32 = 3. The star is 3-sigma
above the background noise. This is not very good, and would not
usually be considered a detection. (Remember, our star is actually on
top of noise; if it happens to be on a high point of the noise, we
might measure that pixel 4- or 5-sigma above background; but it's just
as likely to fall on a low point and measure 1- or 2-sigma above
background, which is well deep in the noise.) (Note: We still have
the 5 ADU read noise, but it's small compared to the photon shot
noise, and when you add them in quadrature, they still round to 32
ADU.)

I want to stress that this dramatic reduction in signal-to-noise from
scattered light is a physical reality of the light incident on our
sensor. I've made up a sensor to

Re: OT PESO - 0.95 and be there

2010-12-15 Thread Boris Liberman
Yeah, right. Well, I've read the review of this lens on LensTip. Right
here:

http://www.lenstip.com/1876-news-Voigtlander_Nokton_25_mm_f_0.95_-_lens_review.html

It's a cool lens, but from my experience with A 50/1.2, it still seems
to me that something in the frame has to be sharper than the rest. May
be not f/8 sharp, but sufficiently sharp to indicate that this is the
point of interest across the third axis, that of depth.

So, without disrespect, Derby, I am thinking that you've just started on
a fascinating path of hair thin DOF photography.

Re: OT - Another bad break for a cyclist

2010-12-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
Sorry to hear. The guy apparently has serious problems. Hope you feel better
soon.

I learned not to confront truck drivers when I worked in New York. It must have
been more than 25 years ago. I had been injured in a fall a few days prior and
I could barely move my right arm. I was waiting to cross 7th Avenue in midtown,
when a delivery van almost ran me down. As it sped by, I smacked the side of
the van with my umbrella, which was in my left hand. The driver, a very large
fellow who looked like a heavy from the Sopranos, stopped, got out and ran
toward me. I flailed away with my bumbershoot to no avail. He punched me in the
jaw and floored me, cracking a tooth and leaving me with a blue and swollen
face.

Truck drivers tend to be a breed apart.

Checked myself and available lenses are:
* FA Limited

* DA* lenses

Which is nice, not good enough but very nice anyway.

If you hadn't mentioned this I wouldn't have noticed that little
sub-menu. Tried it on some shots last night and wonder of wonders: it
works! It de-vignetted a dozen (commissioned doggy (Great Dane puppy))
shots that I took using the DA* 16-50. I didn't realize that that subtle
vignetting was even there before. It also corrected slight trapezoidal
distortion, though that would have been unnoticeable given the subject

I've used a ball head (the earlier version of the spring-loaded one)
with a 300/2.8, and even with the 250-600.

It isn't sturdy enough to hold the lens absolutely rigid, but for
use on a monopod when you need a little flexibility its's ok -
there are other sources of lens movement besides the mount itself.

That said, though, I prefer to use the monopod directly screwed
into the lens whenever possible; there's no point in introducing
any vibration that you don't need, and a direct connection is
far more rigid.

Re: Manfrotto Ball Head

2010-12-15 Thread Darren Addy
I have an opinion which is somewhat contrary. It is that if you are on
a tight budget, then you can't afford to waste money - which is
exactly what people do when they buy on price. You buy something,
hoping it will be adequate and when its not you spend money moving up
the chain until finally you buy what you should have bought in the
first place... only you have spent something approaching DOUBLE the
cost of your final equipment by wasting all that money on the
lower-chain items. It think people tend to do this with both tripods
and the heads they put on them. Sadly, this is not an original
thought: http://www.bythom.com/support.htm

So I'm not getting one until I can get the one I really want (which is

2010-12-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
Very moving, sir. As always, very well shot and edited. The shadow of the plane
moving across the Polish countryside at the beginning and the flaring orbs at
the end bookend it dramatically.

I'm left to wonder if the teenagers understand what they saw at Auschwitz. They
appear to be rather unemotional. Perhaps they are too far removed from the
horrors of the holocaust to feel it deeply. Perhaps it's as impersonal to them
as the Spanish Inquisition was to our generation. Too soon we forget.

PESO - Elegance (daylight!)

2010-12-15 Thread Rick Womer
I looked out the window of the Paris cafe where we were having lunch, and
noticed the scruffy building and the elegant clothes in the windows. Then, it
was just a matter of waiting for something colorful to enter the frame.

OT: Surgery follow-up

2010-12-15 Thread Stan Halpin
After some processing delays and a bit of phone tag, I finally got the
pathology results today from my prostate surgery 2+ weeks ago. All very
positive - the cancer was contained within the body part they removed,
absolutely no sign of any spread beyond that location. I had been quite
optimistic from the beginning based on comments from several urologists and the
fact that my cancer was identified quite early. But 'tis a relief to have
confirmation!

I have now become an advocate for periodic physical exams. I was lucky - I had
been many years without a physical, but for no particular reason decided to
have a full work-up this summer. Listen to the voice of experience guys! Go get
a PSA test.

And now back to the celebratory bottle of wine . . .

I think there's an issue somewhere between logarithmic and linear scales... :-)

In principle, you ask the cirquitry to discern more finely between
intensities of light in low contrast scenes. I imagine you'd get
sampling errors for starters... :-)

that was the gist of a reply that i was drafting yesterday when the
battery died -- as i understand it, the amplification (if any) is often
right on the sensor chip and there's a strong need to keep the number of
transistors per pixel to a minimum; adding non-linear amplification (and
some way to switch/adjust it) seems like it could significantly
complicate the sensor chip in a place where complexity is trouble; some
engineer might find a clever solution, but i don't see that there's much
incentive to develop such a system when continuing to improve overall
dynamic range/bit-depth per pixel are of far broader value, and will
effectively increase the (already substantial, imo) latitude to enhance
dynamic range in post

btw, i do often encounter situations where the dynamic range is
artificially narrow, so i understand the desire to handle it

Re: OT - Another bad break for a cyclist

2010-12-15 Thread John Mustarde
When I lived in Arizona there were nice bike lanes and
even nicer canal trails so I could bike recreationally
about 10-60 miles in relative safety. But I discovered
nothing angers a motorist more than having to yield to
a bicyclist, even for one second of braking.

My last incident I was struck from behind by a
negligent driver while traveling in the bike lane, and
dragged along the street. The driver stopped and tried
to assault me laying helpless in the street, but
bystanders intervened. Cops investigated. They tried to
say it was my fault because of lighting, until I
pointed out my bike's two powerful headlights,
taillights, reflectors, and that the street lighting
for a hundred yards in any direction was bright enough
to read by. The damage to my bike and his car was
consistent with my story.

I got a free attorney consult and discovered auto
insurance normally would pay approximately 3 times my
medical expenses.

My suggestion is to record all expenses, maybe some
future compensation will help. It is in many ways a
PTSD type of injury with lasting effects. I got $3500
and a new bike - paid from his policy. It wasn't
enough, but better than nothing. After a couple of
years the nightmares of being helplessly dragged
finally went away.

And to all of us, please remember no cyclist can
possibly cause a substantial delay, so keep a cool head
and a sharp eye.

Now I still use horns, lights, reflectors, bright
apparel, cell phone, etc. I've added pepper spray (dog
and human strength), a small steel object designed to
destroy auto windows (in case I have to rescue a
motorist)... and much more. All legal and backed by
proper training, of course.
